The long Austin heat wave rolls on accompanied by the constant drone of my air conditioner. It is…read morenot a pleasant sound. It is the sound of money hemorrhaging from my household into Reliant Energy's bottomless maw. My house had issues. Let's just say that energy efficiency and green concerns were not at the top of the list when my cookie-cutter suburban pad was thrown together. My doors: permeable. My windows: radiant. My upstairs: a sweltering hotbox fit to slow roast a brisket to perfection. And onward droned the air conditioner. Now, before we go much further, I want you to know that I am not gullible. There are no magic solutions that would turn my house into a perfectly efficient icebox. It's bloody hot out there, and the relentless sun will have its due. I'm also not a wealthy man. I would not be swayed by some silver-tongued charlatan into undertaking a massive home renovation just to save some money on my electricity bill. I was looking for quick fixes for a fair price with tangible benefits (less hot air drafting into my house and less heating of my upper story from my attic). This is where the Energy Guys came in. I chatted with the owner (Jeff) as he was working on an insulation job for one my neighbors. I hate being sold to, so I was on guard for pressure sales tactics. Jeff was reasonable, factual, and laid-back. We did a walk-through of my house and came up with list of basic fixes. Thermal imaging confirmed what I suspected. My doors were leaking due to terrible weather-stripping, my upper story was baking due to poor insulation in my attic, and my duct work was poorly sealed with precious cold air leaking into my attic. Though I have windows that are just turrible, Jeff advised me that taking a second mortgage to replace them just didn't make sense for my house and situation. I've got two kids in daycare and a prodigious appetite for fine espresso, wine, and other edibles. There's not a lot of money sitting around to plow back into my house, but the bill was reasonable. The work should qualify for rebates offsetting a big portion of the cost, but that part hasn't been done yet. Jeff and his crew were professional, skilled, easy to work with, and punctual! My upstairs feels cooler, and I can't feel hot air seeping in from my front and back doors. Even better, there are now more frequent reprieves from the droning of the air conditioner. For anyone looking for an energy audit or other home energy services, these guys were great to work with. Highly recommended.

This was my best Yelp find to date! I searched for "radiant barrier" assuming that was what we…read moreneeded and Energy Guys came up, along with a few other companies as well. I had a few energy audits, quotes and opinions provided to me by the few highest Yelp reviewed companies. Ultimately we happily went with Energy Guys to do the work. We knew that our house was too hot, our A/C was working too hard and weren't sure which of the various products and services out there were going to really do much for us. Our electric company would send us fliers about how we should get radiant barrier so that was why our search started there. Jeff came out and did a very thorough and professional energy audit. I was expecting all kinds of leaks and a long list of recommendations. Instead, Jeff was honest that our builder's atrocious zoning system (aka a cheap way to have 1 A/C unit on a 2-story home) was to blame for our discomfort, A/C working overtime and high energy bills. Huh? You mean you aren't going to say I need radiant barrier, new windows/doors, an attic full of fans and you can do it all if I sell my soul to you? Nope. Not Jeff. He did say we were losing about 10-15% of our cool air from the A/C to the attic and that everything needed to be sealed and resealed in some cases. He said our insulation was about R-30 and really wasn't too bad but if we wanted it couldn't hurt to "top off" our insulation. He said given our exact situation radiant barrier wasn't actually going to do what we thought it might. Two days later on a Sunday, Jeff and another guy came out and sealed everything in the attic and got our insulation up to at least R-44. They found places that weren't even really insulated and a few cavities that weren't insulated at all. In those spots of the home I notice a dramatic difference. We can tell the house just feels cooler and the A/C doesn't turn on as often. Even given this record breaking summer we are able to keep the house more comfortable than ever before. I am looking forward to see what happens with our electric bills over time. You will get an honest audit and budget friendly recommendations from Energy Guys! Extra bonus: they have impeccable communication, confirmations and followups.

My friends thought the price was too high so I had to shop around and found Elite Mechanical. From start to finish, the experience was the utmost professional. I have an advantage in dealing with HVAC systems because my father worked in the industry and my other brother-in-law also works in the industry. I kinda know where the pitfalls are. At not time did I feel I was being taken advantage of or misled. I was quoted a fair price for the features we desired and once agreed had an installed scheduled. The installers were on time, VERY BUSY, and the crew worked well together. It was a joy to see this team; like clock work. They let me know what was going to happen and how long they expected it to take and what I could expect. I worked from home that day and they were true to their word and not distracting in the least. An amazing feat as they replaced two complete units. Here, to me is the best part. In the business world, whenever I have something installed, invariably, that installer leaves a MESS. They will install what they need to and leave their trash behind. It's annoying. Elite Mechanical did NOT. Truly, if you didn't see them work (and all the old equipment on the lawn) you wouldn't know they were here. I couldn't find even a shred of of discarded equipment boxes, ties, plastic, NOTHING. They even had lunch on site and I would have been perfectly happy with them using my trash can to discard things, but they took that also! In my opinion, you could easily do worse. Elite is the most professional company I've dealt with.

Nothing was ever noted that installation was done poorly or incorrectly, as you can't see into the wall to know until after what happened as that could not be seen. Fast forward about 5 years, and the unit on the back of the house fell off the wall, causing damage to the electrical wiring and copper tubing. We contacted QLS for service to look at the unit, determine why it had fallen and to see if it could be repaired. QLS did come out this time and re-hung the unit, stating it wasn't bolted into any studs and only the siding and the OSB. The technicians couldn't get the unit working on the first visit. They dropped off the disconnect breaker at the door to my kids and said they didn't have one. I was able to test the breaker and determine it was functional and opened the cover for the electrical wiring and found the supply wiring was not visible as it pulled into the flex conduit coming from the disconnect to the unit. I re-terminated the wiring and the unit powers up but won't blow cold air. I let QLS know what I found and they said they would come back out. The tech on the second visit ended up fixing the unit letting us know the copper tubing was crushed and all the refrigerant had leaked out, was able to un-kink the tubing and recharge the system. They later sent an invoice for $811, without ever confirming the estimate with us prior to fixing the unit or even giving us a clue as to what it might cost. We would NOT have approved of that cost. We would have said we do not need the unit anymore, we already have a window unit in there from the other times it did not work. We feel this should have been communicated better and honestly feel taken care of by the company, not because they had to or it was under warranty. Obviously, it wasn't by this time. But more to do with the fact that properly installed units do not just fall off walls for no reason. It wasn't neglect or even an accident on our part. Even QLS admits that units do not just fall off the wall, and they provided some pretty wild hypotheses as to how a motorcycle driving through our yard knocked it off the wall, while not physically damaging the units frame or coil fins, not even a scratch on the paint. (We do not own a motorcycle, the marks the tech saw were clearly from mowing the area so that the tech could access the unit). If the owner would have really analyzed the images we sent, he would see that it's technically impossible for the unit to have been hit due to placement and tracks. Well played QLS, doing some questionable work in hopes that by the time anyone notices, you can technically and legally claim it's not your problem anymore.

Something happened to the thermostat and it wasn't working. I called QLS on a Friday and they told me to call Honeywell as their techs don't reprogram the thermostats. I found out then that Honeywell outsources troubleshooting to Resideo. Resideo call center keeps regular office hours so I did not have AC for a weekend. Since the Resideo Tech and I could not get the thermostat to work, I called QLS again who sent a tech out, and he replaced the old one. I called Resideo back and they helped me reprogram the thermostat. I've had no more problems with it. QLS didn't charge for that visit. In October, I was having trouble with the heater. I called QLS and a technician came out. He looked over the system and had to replace the circuitboard. I asked him if I could pay the bill and he said there would be no charge as the part was under warranty. Later in October, I received a text message that I owed for the service. I called and Vanessa said she would check into it, I assumed everything was taken care of. Today I get another text message that I owe for the visit back in October. When I called in, I was told that while the tech was here, he did a semi-annual checkup on the unit and that's what I'm being charged for. I was very upset because I'd been told by the tech I didn't owe for of the visit- had he told me I owed for a check up, I would have paid it during the original visit. When I called in back in October to the office, I assumed everything was fine because I heard nothing back for a month. QLS is extremely responsive to calls, and their texts are professional and friendly. But beware of communication issues and charges.
