I absolutely love it here at the park. I walk the dog here just about everyday and it's really a great workout. Sometimes we walk the entire paved road and several times we even came across pigs. We bring guavas sometimes and leave them for the pigs to eat. There's such nice scenery here and it's so peaceful... The only setback would be the rain, but you have to expect that way up here!! So, after about 20 years, I've "re-discovered" the Aiea Loop Trail. I was torn on whether or not to give it 3 or 4 stars. The trail just wasn't what I remembered it used to be. First, "the good"... - It's an easy 5-mile hike. The elevation changes are moderate. - It's family and dog friendly. - It's a loop, so you don't have to back track. - It's pretty lush. You can see some great foliage/plant life on this hike. - It's a fairly clean trail. Let's keep it that way! - I don't think mountain biking or hunting are allowed; if it is, I didn't see any signs of it. - There's ample parking. - There are lots of picnic areas if you want to relax after your hike. - While I didn't use the bathroom facilities there, they do have them... Now, "the bad"... - It's not very challenging if you are a serious hiker. - It can be muddy and even buggy. - There are few lookouts along the trail. One of the lookouts now looks out onto H-3, which is rather sad.. but such is urbanization. Finally, "the ugly" - The B-24 bomber that crashed in 1944 is no longer to be seen. This used to be the iconic part of the trail. Over the years, scavengers have taken pieces of the bomber apart. When hiked this trail in the early 90's, I always looked forward to seeing the bomber along the trail. Now it's gone! Now, for some practical info. The Aiea Loop trail is actually located in the Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area. I recommend parking in the second parking lot you see after entering the State Recreation Area. You can then walk up to the trail head by following the road. When you finish the trail, your car will be nearby. The trail runs along the ridge on the west side of Halawa Valley. There are some peak-a-boo views of the southern coastline and Wai'anae Range. If you are a leisurely hiker, I would allot 2.5-3 hrs for the hike. We typically finish it in 1.5 hrs at a comfortable pace with some light jogging/running through part of it. read more

The hike is beautiful when dry. The people on the trail are nice. Hikers are not afraid to say "hello." Good for kids, too! read more

Attention Avid Hikers! Be prepare for mud, mud and mud! Mosquitoes, gnats and even maybe some fruit flies! The day I went was very hot and no tradewinds to keep our group cool. But the shade from the trees did help deflect the hot sun rays! This hike took us about 2.5 hours with resting and manuvering through mud puddles. It is also a dog friendly hike. Towards the middle of the loop there is this really cool view of the H3, mountains and parts of the ocean and town. It gets really hot, so please H2O and ready to sweat it out! read more

Meh, I experienced this trail when it was better. Hiked this trail in 1979 and I don't recall the muddy, slippery, scary mess it was yesterday. Totally unprepared for the ordeal it now is. Sure, I was younger and in better shape, but I was just as afraid of heights with no sense of balance back then. The only nervous part I remember in 1979 was one ridge with drop offs on both sides. Yesterday was cortisol-filled for me. Granted there were some folks running it! But there are sections where traction was dicey and the drop offs were steep. In one particular washed out area, you have to ease yourself over a large boulder with only a few inches of toe holds. Lots of huge fallen tree trunks blocking the trail. Some had been cut/cleared but most hadn't. It's obvious that over the years nature has taken her toll and trail maintenance is a casualty of reduced state budgets. I would not classify this trail as easy or beginner any more. read more

Great beginner hike. My 7 and 10 year old completed without fuss AND in the rain. It's pretty long, a little under 5 miles, so bring water and snacks. Took approximately 2 1/2 hours to finish. Highly recommend for the family looking for adventure. read more

Aiea Loop Trail - Stunning views of the H3 - Hiking Near Me - Aiea, Hawaii

Hiking after a long hiatus! Felt good to get some sweating done. When we first got to the park, we ran around the pavement loop, only to realize, that was probably not the trail. To get to the trail, drive up past the first initial parking lot and park in the first parking lot you see (or anywhere close to that lot). One of the entrances to the trail is off to the left of the picnic area near this parking lot. To access the other entrance, continue past this picnic area and park at the first parking lot you see with restrooms and a drinking fountain. This lot should be near the top of the pavement loop. There should be a trail that is marked with two posts with a chain between the two. The trail was relatively dry when we went. Lots of people taking their dogs on this hike! The trail is very shaded so we didn't worry much about the sun. I forgot to DEET myself and the bugs had a field day with my legs. There are a couple points in the hike where HUGE fallen trees blocked the trail. Just be careful when climbing around some of them. The trail gets thin sometimes around these points. That and the amounts of roots in the trail and I can see my clutzy self tripping and falling off the edge at certain points! Just pay attention. The loop trail took about 1 hr 40 mins for this 4.5 mi hike. You get GREAT views of the H-3 and beyond. Would definitely recommend bringing your camera. and DEET. Have a great hike! read more

Located at the top of Aiea Heights Drive.....just keep going up until the road ends....this is one of the best beginners trails to start on. Parking is at the top of the hill where you will find clean bathrooms and lunch areas. From what the signs read, its about 4.5 miles long on a relatively easier trail. i would honestly say that it is kid friendly but just keep in mind that the distance. If you think your kids might be grumbling.....expect to hear it for 2 hours =) The loop trail does provide for some views of the ocean and Halawa valley but majority I would say is just peaceful trees. Ive done this loop by myself sometimes to just get away to think. You can have 2 hours of just thought. read more

Normally I prefer ridge hikes but Aiea Loop is great for an array of reasons: 1) It's close. Most of my favorite hikes are near the Hawaii Kai area so going there is an ordeal sometimes; 2) It's easy and good for my dogs, especially since one of them isn't exactly a doggy athlete; 3) It's green and lush, providing a fair amount of shade throughout the hike. The biggest flaw is probably that it's a little boring at times...sometimes you just want to propel down a steep rock or walk a ridge barely wide enough to comfortably walk on. Aiea totally isn't one of those hikes, but it's a great place for dogs and for little kids. It also gets crowded very quickly, so be sure to get there early! read more

I agree with others who questioned whether this was a "beginner's" hike. It was a bit challenging. There were huge turned-over trees to climb over, and while I hiked on a relatively dry day, there was still plenty of mud. So I can only imagine what it would be like on a slippery day! I think if my kids were with me, I'd be terrified of them taking a false step off the often narrow path and falling down one of the cliffs! It was a nice hike, with lots of solitude. I came across only a few other hikers. And there are a few really nice views, including one of a nearby highway that circles a mountainside. The person who pointed out that the end of the hike is most challenging is absolutely correct. It becomes very steep and increasingly muddy. And yes, there is something about the topography that messes with GPS devices. My RunMeter app was telling me I had hiked 14 miles when clearly the hike is less than 5 miles. Two other important notes: 1. In the last 20-30 minute stretch, there is a fork with no clear directions of which way is the trail! Go right! But rest assured that if you go left, as I did, you will eventually encounter a sign that tells you that you are no longer on the trail. 2. At the trail exit, there are no clear directions back to the parking. This caused me a little panic, since my cell phone (with GPS) had gone dead and I needed to catch a plane soon. So at the exit, climb the hill, and then follow the road upwards and you should be able to find the lot. (It's a good 10 minute walk after a challenging hike!) read more

This is a great trail! It is mostly shaded, 4.8 miles and sometimes muddy. The terrain changes throughout the trail and the trees, ferns, and moss remind me of the Northwest. If felt as if we left Hawaii for a couple of hours. Next time I would remember to bring water and wear better shoes thoughs. read more

This hike...was harder than I expected. A couple of friends and I went on a rainy Wednesday morning, so there weren't many people on the trail except the hardcore runners and the old Korean ladies (both groups made us feel bad about our physique). Puddles the whole way! We expected it to take 2 and 1/2 hours, like everyone says, but it took us 4 hours! So slow x( , but we were walking at a pretty leisurely, no-sweating pace. It was kind of freaky to see the trees that had fallen over the path slowly sliding down the mountain. The little stream near the end/start was a nice surprise! We also liked hearing the roosters tell us that the trail would be almost over and seeing the boars along the side of the road. Lots of pretty bird calls throughout the hike. The view of the H3 was cool, too, because it was like sudden civilization! If you don't care as much as we did about getting muddy, and if it hasn't been rainy, then it really shouldn't take as long as 4 hours. I'd say that this trail is not safe for children when its muddy because people could just slide right off the mountain! Recommendation: Park your car where you will end the hike. Park in the first lot if you will start at the top. Park in the top lot if you will start by the picnic tables. read more

*Views of the H3, Pearl Harbor, and...Aiea. *Slippery when wet! *To start at the top or at the bottom? Easy hike, not very demanding in terms of changes in elevation. However, there are portions of the trail where you will have to climb over downed trees AND if, for whatever reason, you decide to hike the trail directly after a rainfall be prepared to get muddy and slip as the trail itself is a dirt trail. Running the trail isn't too bad, if you start at the top portion and run down you'll catch a couple of switchbacks that can be deceiving. The other drawback to starting at the top is that when you get to the end of the trail you'll have to walk up the incline to get back to the upper parking lot. Overall, nice trail, nice views and yes, "facilities" are available. read more

the hiking is awesome but there have been many car break ins. My rental car was broken into by a professional smash and grab and police was no help at all. wish there was more security or a uniform presence patrolling the car lots. so beware of leaving valuable stuff in the car. but Aiea loop trail is super gorgeous. read more

This hike is set to 4.8 miles and for such a short hike, it felt endless. When we hit midway, we were able to locate a small path to the right, where it took us to an ideal viewpoint of the H3 Freeway. Be prepared for partial muddy trails after midway point and dirty soaked shoes! Once you catch sight of 2 benches, that will mark the end of your journey. Exit will literally be one minute walk from the two benches. Didn't like the fact that our exit out did not take us where we entered. We had to walk half a mile more to our vehicle. read more

Aiea Loop Trail - Viewpoint of H3 Freeway. - Hiking Near Me - Aiea, Hawaii

OMG THERE WAS SO MUCH MUD WHEN I WENT!!! Now that I got that statement out of the way, this was a nice hike. It's nestled in the middle of a gorgeous forest that twists and turns and goes up and down and narrows. It's a pretty little hike away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy areas. The views are gorgeous, showing the H3 and forest scenery. There are a few parking stops for this hike, the loop starts at the third stop at the top and ends at the second stop. There's also restrooms at each of the parking stops, but none along the 4.8 miles of hiking trails. The trail also has many look out points with views, but few of them have benches to sit at. Be sure to bring bug spray and hydrate! It had rained a little the day before, so I'm guessing that's where all the terrible gross messy dirty mud came from. Try coming on a day that there wasn't even a little rain before and maybe you won't have the annoying task of finding the less muddy paths like I did. read more

I went on a Saturday and expected this place to be teeming with hikers, but lucky for me, it wasn't. I went around 3 pm and maybe passed 4 - 5 people on the trail. Parking is a little confusing because there are lots all the way up once you start going up the one-way hill. My advice is to park by the camp sites because that's where you'll come out of the trail. It's nearly impossible to see where the trail emerges, so just park by the camp sites and walk to the start of the trail, which isn't far. Holy fruit (at least in Sept.)! This should be renamed the strawberry guava trail because these [invasive] trees with juicy, delightful fruit are literally growing everywhere. The trail itself was super peaceful, jungle-y and easy with little uphill trekking to be found. If I had a bit more energy and the right shoes, I could fathom running it. It wasn't muddy when I went, but I could see how the roots could make it brutal after a rain, particularly as you head down into the valley about mid-way through...that happens to be the same spot where these heavy-scented white ginger are overflowing. This trail really has everything a hiker could check mark - flowers, birds, lookouts, lilikoi, eucalyptus permeating the air. The trail is wider than most and it's shady almost the entire way in the late afternoon, which made it perfect for my furry companion who joined me. The main lookouts are all of the downed trees along the way, which may be hard for some (kids, bad knees, etc.) to navigate over in some spots. Nothing to be scared of, though. Think it took me a around 2 hours, but you could do it faster or slower. read more

This was a beautiful trail! Our hike was about 4 hours long, but that was with A LOT of stops to ooo and ahh over the views. We took our time throughout the whole hike as my ankles tend to give out and the path is quite unsteady and very slippery in parts. When we went it was very muddy, although we haven't had a ton of rain lately. We got pretty muddy in some parts. In two parts in particular we had to climb down and back up because a tree (not a small tree, but an old tree with a full root system) had eroded and fallen down the hill causing a HUGE hole in the ground where the roots used to be. The trail is mostly shaded and rarely has you walking at an incline. The biggest incline we hiked was actually after the trail on the park road back up to our car. If you want to be alone, I would suggest hiking earlier in the morning. We got there around 7:30 and the parking lot only had two cars, but by the time we finished the upper lot was totally full. We were lucky enough to spot the old WW2 plane, although the slope down to it off of the trail had close to zero traction. Climbing down there was worth it however, as this is a wonderful piece of history. read more

Great trail. Path was well marked and easy to follow. One negative was the poor directions on yelp. We ended up parking in residential area and starting the trail on the opposite end. It would have been nice to start directly in the park/camping area. Otherwise, I highly recommend the hike. Very family/pet friendly course. read more

When the treadmill gets boring, and I need to feel the wind in my hair, hiking is my "go to" adventure for some outdoor time, and a good sweat session. After wanting to try Aiea Loop Trail for some time, I decided to take a stab at it, by myself. Following the directions of my fellow yelpers, I parked at the top lot and arrived early to avoid the crowds. Okay.....SUPER early! I was the first car in the lot! I started off at about 8:15 and walk/trotted down the clearly marked path. Other reviews mentioned being "BORED" after looking at the same scenery over and over, but I thought this trail was quite the opposite. The foliage was different with each turn, and some parts of the trail were very dry, others parts I could see could get really wet during rains. There were fallen stumps and logs which was interesting. It can be discouraging when other reviews give hiking trails 2-3 stars, so take each review with a grain of salt and try it yourself! You will form your own opinions based on the tips and advise of other yelpers. :) I used my Nike+ running app, which tracked my distance, and I hiked about 1.75 miles before turning back. At about 1.5 miles in, there is a marked trail that deviates from the main trail (denoted by orange tags). If you climb up this trail it will take you to a high overlook where you can see the H3 freeway. If you continue straight, the trail will also overlook the freeway. I turned around at the big bare tree (if you've done this hike you know which one I'm talking about), totaling 3.5 miles. I'm not sure if Aiea Loop Trail actually LOOPS because it was my first time and I turned around about 3/4 in! Next time I hike here I'm going to take someone who's done it before so I can find out if it actually does loop! LOL read more

Ok let me start out by saying my review of this trail is completely biased towards the circumstances of the day we hiked. Let me start out with this: My husband and I love to hike. We try our best to go every Sunday. This past Sunday was no exception even though I swear it looked cloudy even in Kapolei (He does not agree!) BUT we still planned on going. We get up to the parking area for this trail. Drizzling rain. I ask if he still wants to hike. Without hesitation he replies, "Yes!" I mumble under my breath and say "OK, lets wait until the rain stops" We wait in the car ten minutes. The rain stops (We both know it won't last though). We begin anyways. I was so dang grumpy that within five minutes of starting the trail it started raining. Lightly though, so not enough to make us turn back right away. About 1/4 of the way in though it picked up, and it was a nice rain the ENTIRE hike. Okay - let me also say I KNOW this is my fault. I should have just said NO I'm not hiking today. I don't feel like getting soaking wet just for the hike. But I didn't (who knows, maybe I secretly wanted to hike just as badly as my husband and knew we'd go no matter what - we may never know the real reason I said "Sure, why not?") ANYWAYS - that being said it is not smart to hike in the rain and we know that. Which is why TYPICALLY we don't hike in the rain. This hike was just all out of the norm for us. Despite all that though - this is a nice hike. I remember for the first half of the hike thinking "Wow! Its raining and I'm really not even getting that muddy!" Enter second half of the hike - found all the mud! We came out of this hike with our legs pretty much covered in mud. Lucky for us though this hike was do able in the rain - it was not too difficult and the terrain was still good even in the rain (Yes, even if it got a bit muddy). At moments it made it a bit more slippery but overall this was a hike I felt 100% comfortable doing in the rain. So I'd rate it a pretty easy hike. Beautiful views, good length. All in all - great hike and we will definitely do it again. Hopefully next time under different circumstances. Even in the rain it took us just over 2 hours to complete the loop. read more

Great workout trail. Not too long, not too short. No big elevation gains, nothing to really get all geared up for. It can get really muddy and that will make the trail much more difficult. If you get adventurous, take the Aiea Ridge spur trail and take in one of the best views on the island from the told of the Koolau. read more

TIP: Do the trail backwards - It's better this way. I have been on this trail several times now... and I just love it. It now takes me about 2 hours (I'm now in better shape than I was) to go thru the trail at a steady yet somewhat leisurely pace (taking time to stop and admire the surrounding beauty - and smell some flowers along the way). The last time I went I saw 4 wild pigs! I just want to share one more tip - that I have finally figured out. If you drive all the way to the top and start your hike at the official beginning - when you get to the end of the trail - you have to walk up a steep hill (which is no fun after you just hiked 4 miles and are feeling a bit tired). So the thing to do is start the trail where it ends and do the trail backwards - then at the end you walk down the steep hill to your car instead of up it. To start the trail at the end - drive almost all the way up to the top and park your car by all the picnic tables (all the picnic tables are down and off to the right - there are like 10 tables down there and a bathroom building - you can't miss it). Walk down to the picnic tables and go towards the bathroom... the trail head (or end - whatever) is right near there - there is a trail sign. Happy Hiking! read more

How to get there: FInd Aiea Heights Drive and drive all the way to the top! The trail is 4.8 miles of ROUGH terrain. A lot of sections are wet and muddy. My wife and I did it this morning. We were a little hesitant because it looked cloudy and it was drizzling but that was the idea. We wanted to get down and dirty! We started at the beginning of the trail and right off the bat, it was muddy. We were a trying to be careful and not get our shoes muddy or dirty but by the time we got to the middle, we didnt care as much. The views were actually decent. There are a few lookouts towards the beginning of the trail but then it goes a long way before you get to another lookout. The trail is NOT even at all. There are tree roots sticking up ALL OVER the place. By the end of the trail your ankles may be a little sore. i dont even see how people even mountain bike here, some pathways are SUPER NARROW. My wife and I felt alone because we did about 3/4 of the trail before we even saw anybody. It was kind of nice just being alone. It was like we were in our own little world. THe middle part was more about nature, looking at the trees, the plants, and what would happen if we fell! Mud was all over the place and it is really slippery. There were a couple of sections that were dry but they didnt last long. The ending was the worst! The last part of the trail is uphill and going uphill in the mud is not easy. We ended up finishing the trail in 2 1/2 hours because a lot of times we had to stop and figure out where we would plant our feet. At least none of us fell in the mud...so it was a good day! Will definitely be back to do the trail again. Hopefully it will be a little more dry. read more

We were barely 15 minutes into the 2 hour/4.8mile hike and were already planning our return. It did get muddy towards the end, but it wasn't too bad. Bring water, good shoes and maybe a snack. Watch your footing and be prepared to duck under and climb over fallen tree trunks and branches. People do bring their dogs but all we met were nice and even trekked us for a short while. Maybe not the best for children under maybe 7 just due to the mud, tree debris, climbing, etc, but if your little is an experienced hiker, just keep an extra eye out. read more

There are 3 main pieces of advised I'd give: 1) Make sure to bring enough water/Gatorade to stay hydrated. 2) Try avoid going if its raining or just has rained so its not slippery and muddy while you're on your trek. 3) Lastly if you're doing the whole loop, park at the bottom part and walk up to the start. Because after you're don't you are not gonna walk up that hill to get to your car. Or if you meet someone there, one park at the bottom and then you both drive to the top entrance. read more

This trail is our "go to" when we cannot decide where to hike for a few hours. It's not hard to hike it and the trails are nice and wide. There are two areas that usually get sloppy from rain, but that's not a reason to avoid hiking. We have found that parking near the campground and starting there puts the uphill parts on the front end... and when we finish, we aren't faced with hiking up that steep driveway to where most people park. I see a few comments about the muddy trails. Tip: don't plan on hiking this trail between December and February... the rest of the year will bring rain, but... not too bad. read more

This is a good hike if you just want to get outside or exercise. It is a pretty flat trail with no significant inclines/declines whatsoever. The trail does do quite a bit of winding which keeps things exciting and is extremely shaded which is nice on hot days. It is nice to get outside and walk through nature, but there is nothing spectacular about this hike. There is an abundance of parking unlike many other hikes. The trail is well maintained and easy to stay on. I would rate the difficulty of this hike as easy and definitely child/dog friendly. read more

Amazing! I loved this hike because of its steady incline that doesn't kill your joints. The 4.8 miles seemed like nothing after embracing the beautiful views. Unlike hikes where you walk until you get to the end and then you turn around and go back the way you came, the loop trail takes you all the way around the mountain so you're always seeing new things, and it makes seeing the biodiversity pretty incredible. It's a rainforest, so it's going to be rainy and wet. If you don't mind getting dirty this might not be the hike for you. I went just after a small shower and parts of the trail were covered in mud, if you don't mind it and are committed to going (like me) say goodbye to your shoes early on in the hike. You'll enjoy your time and have a lot more fun that way. Best hike I've been to on the island so far! read more

Hiked Aiea Loop Trail (ALT) this morning with my dog and had a great time. Trail is well maintained, parking abundant, and has all sorts of twists and turns to keep it interesting. Hiked this trail today and it was extremely muddy. I took my terrier with me and he was drenched in mud. This trail has nice greenery but thats it. I felt it got boring and I really didnt like that the trail did not have any markers. There are a few spots that you have to decide to turn right or left and I was getting worried I maybe going in circles. The trail starts off listed as the Aiea loop trail but then the one and only sign on the trail has the park name on it. I felt it was too long and I do not recommend taking ur dog with you because of how muddy it was. Overall it was ok. read more

It was very muddy! My once white dog was almost completely brown by the time we ended the trail! Great trail for dogs, and running. Ok I'm going to go with 4 stars because it was one hell of a challenge. Those muddy spots were my weaknesses (I'm a prissy... love to be clean and hate to get my shoes dirty). But overall, it was fairly easy. Nice, calming hike that clears your mind and energizes your soul. What I really found interesting was the fact that the trail takes you into the valley near enough to see the Tunnels on the H3 freeway. That's definitely something! So now every time I drive on H3 toward Kaneohe, I look to my left into the forest and wonder where exactly I stood when I saw this part of the freeway. Quick tip: at two points in the trail it seems like forks in the road. My advice is to stick to the right hand trails. We ran into a hiker going in the opposite direction, and we asked him how far more and he preceded to joke that we were not on the Aiea Loop Trail anymore and that we were on the Halawa one. Really wanted to sock him in the eye. Will take you about 2 hours or so. read more

Aiea Loop Trail is a lovely place to visit. The park is well kept. There are no overflowing trash containers, there is a minimal amount of tagging, the picnic tables and other amenities are in reasonable shape. The bathrooms are kept pretty well and are clean. The trail itself is nice because it is a loop. One can start on either the bottom entrance or the top entrance. I always find myself starting at the top but it only makes a minor difference which way you take. One thing that was added since the last long time ago visit is a couple of benches strategically located at two very nice viewing vistas. I thought it was great to be able to just sit on a bench in the woods and look from Aiea to Mt. Kaala or down on to H3, whichever stirs your soup. The trail is about 5 miles so if you are a Kenyan you'll finish it in 25 minutes but I took about 2 1/2 hours. Not terribly muddy even after some rain. Overall, well kept, easy trail that has a good length with a few nice vistas that is easy to access. read more

This is my update to Aiea Loop Trail. I FINISHED IT!!!! I tried this trail again, this time with the husband in tow. We parked on the middle level again and we started the trail on the lower side. Wow, talk about muddy! We ran into several trail runners. Awesome. We reached a portion where Aiea Loop continues and then another trail ventured off to the right. On GPS it looks like Camp Smith. Who knows? We press on. We make it to the H3 Look out. Very cool, but not as exciting as I thought it would be. I thought the Loop felt like the Never Ending Story! 4.8 miles? No way. MapMyRun had me at over 6 miles when we got to the end. Unfortunately we did not get to see the plane wreckage. It was definitely great exercise for a Friday night. Luckily, we finished right at sunset. I don't think I'll do Aiea Loop any time soon. The broken window glass in the parking lot was upsetting. We did see a gang of cats. We got in the car and on the way out of the park, we saw 2 ladies hanging out next to their car with wild boars just mingling around them with the feral cats. I had to stop and do a wtf. I took a pic (after I asked their permission) and just sat in my car in total shock. Mama boar and her baby boars were oblivious to anyone. Cats and boars hanging out together? Cool. The boars did get scared and take off after the boar hunting truck (complete with a pointer) drove up behind us. Anyway, good starter trail but park at your own risk. read more

I went on this hike two days ago with 3 of my friends and had a nice time. This hike was easy but decently long. There were no extremely steep parts and had a very clear path the whole way. It was a casual hike with a nice view. A few parts were muddy but it had rained earlier that day. I suggest keeping a pair of slippers in the car so you can throw your shoes in the back if you need to. All in all, fun hike with a nice view. I recommend it if you're not a huge hiker but wanted a nice afternoon activity to do. read more

The law requires that all dogs be on a leash but not all hikers follow that law and people know their dogs. Maybe some dogs do not need a leash. Well today as I approach and was jogging nearing a Caucasian man with 3 dogs not on a leash I ask him if it was safe to pass by his dogs. He put a muzzle on one of them and I tried to pass by them the dog was not on a leash and it attacked me making me fall backwards onto a big tree root right on my tailbone as I was on the ground the dog kept trying to bite me the guy just looked on doing nothing. Then he finally put the leash on and hold it back. I asked him his name and he refused to tell it to me. I kept pressing him for his name and he took off running. Please if you were at Aiea Loop Trail today in the afternoon 8/30/24 around 2-3 pm and saw the person I will describe below contact me! message me here. Specially If you saw what kind of car he left in so I can inform HPD. He was wearing blue shorts, he is Caucasian, brown hair, very white, in good physical shape, about 28-35 years old. He was not wearing a shirt. He had 3 dogs, one black, a small dog, and a light brown dog which is the one that attack me. How else can I describe him? he has *that* look. The 'Narcissistic look' it really stands out here in Hawaii. Its usually a Caucasian male (but it can come in other ethnic backgrounds too), "educated" (so to speak), wealthy. Its a look that screams; "I feel entitled to do whatever I want whenever I want, to break any rules because the world its MY oyster. It doesn't matter if my dog can be a danger to anyone because as long as I am doing what I want who cares about others? only I matter." I am the last person to blame a misbehaving dog for this. People know their dogs. If you know your dog could possibly attack a runner have it on the leash at all times for sure. I can not believe this P**ck that actually just stared at his dog attacking a woman even with a muzzle it was a terrifying experience. If that dog ha not had a muzzle I would have been mauled. He should be held accountable for being irresponsible and sadistic. ..........I am the last person to blame the dog and want NO harm to the dog. It was HIS responsibility to have him on a leash. And he should be held accountable. I am still hurting. Unfortunately I did not have my phone with me or I would have taken a pic and video of him... So last but not least if you are trail running in Hawaii have a phone with you! Sports Authority sells this little pouches that you wrap around your waist and can carry a phone. They are comfortable you can run with them on and not feel them. And REPORT, REPORT, REPORT whenever you see this kind of individual's behavior infesting the Aloha State. I used to trail run all over Oahu by myself. Sadly is not that safe anymore. Hawaii has changed a lot and not for the better. read more
