I had an electric water heater go out on me about a year after I bought it, and I was frustrated that I was no longer receiving hot water. I went on yelp and called around to a few places, no-one really got back to me but Brandon did within the hour and immediately told me he could come over same day and help me out. Brandon showed up that evening around 8pm and spent about an hour trying to diagnose the problem, and he was really nice and professional and he explained that it was definitely an electrical issue. I eventually told him that instead of fixing my current water heater, I should just buy a new one. He agreed and drove all the way down to Home Depot with me and picked one up for me. He quickly installed the new water heater and I had hot water! This showed to be evident as he left out parts that were a part of the assembly ( that he said wasn't necessary) and caused a leak . So, I then had to pay out more money to get a the job actually done correctly and to fix the leak that he caused. Suffice to say I wasn't happy about the service call with Brandon. I originally called because I was concerned that the wiring from the breaker box to my wall oven had gone bad and wanted a quote from him to rewire it. When he arrived, he told me (correctly) that I didn't need new wiring. But then he told me that he needed to install a larger junction box than the one that I had purchased, and have the wiring reconnected with specialty (all-aluminum) two-port multi-tap connectors ($20 each) instead of common wire nuts. He went off to Home Depot to buy the new junction box and specialty connectors and came back half an hour later. I later learned that he thought that all of the wires (red, black, and stranded) were aluminum (they weren't). Then he started to install three of the two-port connectors -- one each on the red, black, and neutral wires -- and left the bare ground wire from the oven unconnected to anything, even though I had already told him that the ground wire had to connect to the neutral according to the oven manufacturer. When I pointed that out, he then connected the stranded (tin-plated copper) neutral and the oven's solid copper neutral into one port, with the bare ground wire into a second port on one connector, even though the connectors were designed for one conductor per port (per the manufacturer). Since I was watching him do some things that I'd never seen before, and had some concerns about, I asked a lot of questions as he was working, and he told me that I was irritating him and that I could watch youtube videos and do it myself if I didn't like what he was doing. I should have ended the call then. Anyway, when all was done, and we turned the breaker back on, the oven's controller for the display and timer wouldn't operate. It was working before, but since it was disconnected when he arrived, I couldn't prove that, and I chose not to argue with him about it. Did it short out because of his work? No way to know. His parts and labor charges to me for installing the junction box and the specialty connectors? $160. The oven was old and there was no way I could buy a replacement controller for it, so I turned the breaker back off, bought another oven, and then hired a licensed electrician to test and connect the wiring properly on the new oven (for roughly $80). Next time, if I need any electrical done, I'll call a licensed electrician. read more
