Yesterday, I had the single best Mediterranean meal I have ever had in my life, and it was a takeout order I got from Adana. I am still in shock. I ordered the chicken kabob plate. NOT the chicken breast kabob, but the "normal" (I presume dark meat) chicken kabob. It was the juiciest, most tender and FLAVORFUL kabob I have ever had. OMG! I have some health issues, so I also ordered this "small kidney bean and rice" combo that was AWESOME and perfect for my dietary restrictions. I have never had this in my life, and it was TREMENDOUS! They sent a copious amount of hummus, and it was FANTASTIC! The shirazi salad was also tremendous. Because of my diet, I didn't taste the pita (both hard and soft) that were sent, but I'll bet they are equally good. I'm not kidding when I say that this was one of the best meals I have ever had, and I can tell you I will be ordering this exact same meal over and over again. Seriously. I made the mistake of taking my husband aka the Persian food snob with me. I really do understand the dilemma all of you face when you know how to cook and you refrain from dining out because you know you can cook better than a lot of people. My husband is one of those people because he knows how to cook Persian food and his family had a restaurant in Iran. Needless to say I cannot remember finding a restaurant that he will go to more than once if they serve Mediterranean food. One of my best friends told me she loved Adana, so I couldn't wait to check it out. I just popped in there one day for lunch all by myself and I thought the restaurant was closed because they forgot to put the "Open Sign" up. I ended up pulling on the door handle anyway and lo and behold it was open. So I walk in and there was one customer sitting at a table and I just plopped myself down at a table. A few minutes later a waiter comes walking through the door from the kitchen. I've been hooked on chicken koobideh kabobs lately so I just ordered the chicken koobideh kabob. The lunch is served with rice and two sides. I ordered the hummus and yogurt with cucumber. There was no salad with some type of lettuce to speak of which I would have loved. The second time I went I dragged the Persian food snob with me. Big mistake and I should know by now. My husband did not care for the fact that the chicken koobideh was mixed with baking soda. That gives it a hard shell on the outside. He also didn't like that the dolmeh was served ice cold. This made us both think that it was made who knows when and refrigerated for who knows how long. We both like them warm. The hummus is alright, but they don't add lemon juice. The kashke bademjan was good for me, but just alright for the Persian food snob. Like many typical Armenians, our small gatherings at home typically include a minimum of 10-15 guests every weekend. With a baby, cooking for that many people is not enjoyable. Thanks to Adana, my life has become much easier when hosting for all my friends and family. I first ordered from them about 2 years ago, and ever since, they have been my go-to catering service. Their selection is extensive, the food is delicious, and most importantly, they provide enough food for our culture! If you are Armenian, you will understand - when we cook for 10, it's really for 50 people, and that's exactly how Adana caters, which we all appreciate. I never have to worry about not having enough portions. One of my favorite dishes they offer is their fish, which I have to say is the best fish I have ever had in my life, and I'm not even a big fan of fish to begin with. I also want to mention that their prices are very reasonable, which is hard to come by nowadays. We usually pick up the food, but if I'm not mistaken, they also offer delivery for an additional charge. read more

Spurred on by a Jonathan Gold review, as well as two positive reviews by Yelpers I trust implicitly (Gary I and Steph C), it was time to give my craving for good stuffed grape leaves the satisfaction it deserved. And boy was I satisfied! I had driven by Adana literally hundreds of times and never noticed its modest storefront. Make sure you've got the address or you'll zip right past it. Parking was easy (on the street). The interior is decorated in muted tones, with modern interpretations of classical music playing softly in the background. Service was impeccable. Starting with a cold yogurt drink which was perfectly seasoned, I immediately ordered the stuffed grape leaves as an appetizer. Served with a dill yogurt dip, they were fantastic. If there's one thing that ruins stuffed grapes leaves, it's stringy tough leaves; these grape leaves were soft, melt-in-your-mouth with a lovely filling. Throwing caution to the wind, I then ordered the lamb chop kabob lunch special. The SECOND I took a bite, I knew I had made the right choice. Perfectly tender, perfectly seasoned, these lamb chops were some of the best I've ever had. Served over rice pilaf, the lunch special included two sides (I picked the hummus and Persian Salad.) The hummus was light and flavorful and the Persian salad was really tasty, too. The honey cake with coffee made for a happy ending. Portions are gigantic! I took home enough for two small meals. Oh, this place may be misleading from the outside, but once you enter it is astounding. Stylish ceilings and walls down to the wood flooring and nicely designed tables. Waiters are up to par with a great welcome and prompt seating, excellent service. For a starter, I tried the lentil soup which I immensely enjoyed. I chose a dinner salad since I'm really not into tomatoes and cucumbers and they accommodated me with a tasty ranch salad dressing. Pita bread was split with one side regular pita and the other side had a similar pita but cooked crispier with a garlic taste to it. And dipping that in the creamy hummus, I just loved this . Shish kabob.... aaaah... the best for last..couldn't have asked for anything better. Medium cooked with a slight red inside just steaming hot on my plate with a nice aroma. Like many others, I discovered this place after the Mark Bittman article in the New York Times. It's now framed in the restaurant so you can point it out to newcomers. I've brought hordes of newcomers, and urged many of my friends to try this place because it's delicious, and we need to support the non-chains. I've sent a lot of repeat customers to Adana. So when my in-laws visited from NYC and mentioned they have never had Armenian food, I knew we had to scratch that off their bucket list. They are not foodies nor adventurous eaters -- can't use chopsticks, hold the sushi, just Uncle Ben's converted rice. These creatures of habit loved everything they sampled, from the hummus to the Persian salad. As we made our exit, my mother in law told Edward they'd like to come back on their next visit. Whew. Score one for the daughter-in-law. We've enjoyed many dishes since July 2013: lamb chops, pork ribs, cornish hen, beef koobideh, chicken koobideh, honeycake. The ikra is the best, and I often order it to go for holidays where it's always a hit and great advertisement for Adana. There's still no real signage, which is ironic since it's next door to the sign store. There is a new menu, Edward continues to innovate and remind of me some dishes I need to try. As one would expect, the prices have risen since that NYTimes review, about 30% since last July. The person who gave this place a 1 star review is on drugs. I went here based on a recommendation of a friend, who's sister swears by this place. My friend sent me the NYT article and one afternoon I decided to give it a try. I live in Glendale, so kabob places abound. I've been to all the usual places, Rafis, Zankou, Kabob Factory, Sevan meat market. They're all very good places, but Adana is different enough that I would highly recommend that anybody who loves kabobs give it a try. First off, they have pork. What kabob place do you know that serves pork. Not only do they have pork, they have these pork spare ribs that I would kill for. Holy crap were they good. Ihad ordered the baghali polo as mentioned in the NYT article, but overhear the owner talking to a customer about the pork. So I decided to try it. THIS IS A MUST! You must try to the pork spare ribs. They were juicy (the right amount of fat), crispy and had a fantastic flavor. The other meats were very good. The chicken and beef were very tender, well seasoned and better tasting than other places, but the pork absolutely stood out for me. Dear Chef Khechemyan: Thank you to you and your staff for a delicious and beautifully curated foodie playlist of various Armenian/Middle Eastern dishes. This was my very first time dining here, and I left happily stuffed with extra leftover for lunch the next day, yay! Amazing food, service and hospitality! Parking: Five parking spots right next to the restaurant and/or free street parking all around (watch for signs). Adana Restaurant is located on the busy street of San Fernando Road in Glendale (just one street over from Walgreens). Quiet and unassuming, it is pretty easy to miss this hidden gem / hole-in-the-wall Armenian/Middle Eastern restaurant. Upon entrance, my friends and I (Party of 3) were greeted by Chef Khechemyan himself. Since there's no hostess station, Chef Khechemyan let us sit wherever we wanted. After we were all seated and gotten our drinks, Chef Khechemyan came over and started recommending/curating our first 12 dishes (9 Appetizers + 3 Main Courses + 1 Dessert (we later added on), so 13 dishes total. Drinks: Iced water for all. I also tried their $3 Yogurt Drink, which tasted semi-sweet/sharp. The taste and texture also reminded me of drinking liquid-y, smooth cottage cheese. Served with fresh pita bread and crispy pita chips. You can also request for another basket, if you'd like. Our Nine (9) Appetizers consisted of: ***The first six are small dishes brought out together, so beautiful! 1. $8 Persian Salad: Refreshing, healthy and wholesome with finely chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and herbs, tossed in an olive oil & lemon dressing. 2. $10 Vinaigrette: Ridiculously delicious! The crisp, julienne beets mixed with sweet pomegranates and garnished with walnuts for that extra crunchy nutty taste, wow! I could eat this every day! 3. $10 Hummus: Oh, my goodness, super velvety! Spread onto the pita and enjoy pure happiness! 4. $10 Ajika: Blended bell pepper, carrot, garlic, and spice. Interesting to try, but a bit too smoky and spicy for me. 5. $10 Dolemh (4pcs): Stuffed grape leaves filled with rice, herbs and spices. Tasty, but the rice was a bit too soggy and mushy for me. 6. $3 Yogurt & Shallot Dip: Cool and refreshing to enjoy. 7. $10 Eggplant Dish (Kashk-e-Bademjan): Thinly sliced, fried eggplants topped with a cool and creamy condensed yogurt, fried onions and mint. Flavorful without tasting too rich or heavy. 8. $13 Adana Avocado Salad: Topped with sliced orange bell peppers, jalapenos, assorted herbs and onions. I ended up taking home all the avocadoes underneath. This became an afterthought when we all got distracted with the rest of the remaining, delicious dishes coming out. 9. Sumac Onions (Complimentary, I believed): This wasn't our favorite, we hardly touched it. Our Three (3) Proteins (Main Entrées - brought out in a giant plate): 10. $26 Salmon Kabab + Baghali Polo (fava beans and dill cooked with rice pilaf): Overall, table favorite! A MUST GET! Broiled cuts of fatty salmon filet cooked perfectly (flaky, buttery with crispy salmon skin on top)! Paired with Baghali Polo that was savory and didn't overpower the salmon flavor. 11. $27 Lamb Kabab + Shirin Polo (Orange peel, almond sweet & sour sauce cooked with basmati rice). Love me some lamb! Tender and juicy without tasting too gamey. The Shirin Polo was the sweetest of all the rice, which complimented the lamb wonderfully. This entrée was my personal favorite! 12. $28 Solanti Combo + Albaloo Polo (Sour cherry cooked with rice): Beef Koobideh (savory, soft and tender) + Filet Mignon (Good, but dried tasting for me). Paired with Albaloo Polo that was actually sweet tasting and complimented both cuts of beef nicely. Clever take-on red wine + beef sans the alcohol. 13. Dessert: Honey Cake (don't recall the price), split between the three of us. Mutli-layered cake that's naturally sweet with the honey and cinnamon flavors (strongest detections for me). Great way to end the meal. Service: Chef Khechemyan and Staff were friendly, professional and attentive. Periodically checking in on us to ensure everything we ate was delicious, hot and fresh. Wonderful service! Ambience and Décor: Charming, warm and inviting dining room. Chilled and relaxed vibes. We never felt rushed at all. Adana had been on the list for a couple of years, based on rave reviews from my friends. I finally made it to Glendale last night and tried Adana. I am pretty good at cooking Iranian/Armenian dishes, and I'm often disappointed with food at Iranian restaurants. Not at Adana! The food tasted truly homemade and very tasty. I wasn't sure about the food so I played it safe with rice and asked for zereshk polo. The berries were cooked properly and were plentiful, unlike most restaurants where you get a few fried and dried out berries on your rice. The trout was steamed with tarragon and spices in the belly along with tomatoes and peppers--very flavorful. My friend had the salmon and shirin polo. I tasted both and will be ordering it next time. I have never had shirin polo at a restaurant that I liked. The salmon was also very well-marinated and flavorful. What Adana lacks in ambience, makes up for it 10 times in flavor and quality of food. So for takeout for two... it was $34. The hummus is great. So is the sautéed sliced eggplant/fried onion appetizer. The falafel wasn't very good. Neither was the dolma. Salad was fresh but watery so the rice got watery, too. Overall, was not impressed this time for the cost. Still gets 4 stars because of the good customer service and good fresh food. I will have to explore for another local Mediterranean place for takeout because this one is breaking the bank! Ambiance-wise, it's not a place I'd go to sit for dinner. Jonathan Gold isn't wrong -This place is amazing. Adana has the best mediterranean kababs in Los Angeles! The owner has pride in his food, store and he is always so helpful with recommendations. (Although everything is great, so you can't really go wrong!) We always order the beef lule (koobideh) and chicken thigh kababs - wonderfully marinated, super moist and flavorful. The lamb chops and beef shish are also a solid choices. Our favorite appetizers are the eggplant dish (kashk e bademjan - fried eggplant w/ yogurt + mint), hummus and tabouli. I had a meeting not too far away in Atwater Village, and given the love this place gets from Jonathan Gold and lots of fellow Yelpers, I thought it was finally time to try it. I got there at perhaps 5:15 pm on a Monday (what else can you do when you have a 7 pm meeting?!), which meant I had the place all to myself. The restaurant is pleasant, almost stately without feeling too formal, and there was soothing music playing in the background. Of course, I'd heard about the kabobs, and so I felt duty-bound to order them. First, the server, who started out fairly formal and eventually warmed up to the point where we had a nice chat, brought me a little basket with some pita and some crisped, garlicky pita chip type snacks. Wow, those were good. The main dish took a while to arrive, but obviously, this food is cooked to order--and as became apparent once I started eating it--with a lot of love. My first bite into a kabob was a foodgasm, and it pretty much stayed that way the whole time. I'd ordered a combination of chicken, beef and koobideh (ground beef). All three were superbly flavorful, juicy and uniformly (with the exception of maybe one or two pieces of beef) tender. Some of the best kabobs I've had anywhere. My meal came with my choice of two sides--I opted for hummus and the Persian salad--and a very ample portion of rice. All of these were also excellent. The Persian salad was very refreshing, the rice was perfectly cooked, and the hummus was very good (though nobody's hummus is as good as Zahav's in Philadelphia). I should also add that a small plate of sumac onions came on the side. I promptly dumped it over top of the rice, and taken together with rice and kabob, it added even more depth of flavor to an already delicious meal. The meal set me back in the low 20s after tip and tax, which felt very fair for the superb food quality and generous portions. My foodie buddy wants to try it, and I'm more than willing to come back with him. Adana is definitely a winner. read more

This is my favorite Middle Eastern restaurant of all time. While I love Carousel and Marouch I still find Adana's food to be the lightest and most enjoyable Armenian/Persian food in Los Angeles (well, technically Glendale). Adana is super family friendly and a great spot to eat with a toddler at 5 or 6 pm; things were pretty quiet the last few times we've gone in early. They have high chairs for families which we really appreciated! The grape leaves are like nowhere else- they're just right, not too intense but still full of flavor. Love their hummus and eggplant dips with pita and the cucumber salad is also top notch. My daughter devoured the crispy chips with hummus (SO good). The star of the show for us is the cherry rice and chicken kebab- WOW. This dish just knocks it out of the park.. I am obsessed. Prices are more than fair for this excellent food- a big shout out to an old Jonathan Gold review that led us here years ago. You're the best, Adana! The food here is incredible. A friend told me that the chef is very highly regarded-I'm not sure if it's Michelin star, but he should be! All the rices are out of this world. I highly recommend this place. The only minor caveat is that the actual dining space is a little strange and has no ambience. I'm having the left over chicken kabob from last nights dinner at Adana. I arrived at 7:00 knowing they close at 8, and reminded by the waitress while I waited for a friend. We ordered by 7:15 and again reminded they close at 8. Food was good, but not anything that can't be had at any of the popular kabob places in Glendale. The sour cherry rice, was literally rice with canned sour cherries on it. Waitress refused to substitute Greek salad for Persian salad with twice "no" She then put down the check 10 minutes into our meal by 7:45. This really put me off. I was not going to linger all night, no reason to there, but given the past COVID affect, restaurants would be happy for customers instead of giving us the bums rush out. read more

Adana Restaurant is a warm and friendly restaurant that serves the BEST Armenian food that I have ever had. Were it not for Jonathan Gold's high praise and Adana's inclusion on nearly every "best kabob" list in Los Angeles as well as an event in the area, I never would have come here. But, I can say that it is worth the trip. The location on busy San Fernando Road, just south of Alameda, is easy to miss. This is particularly so if you are headed north bound, because the parking is on the south side of the building. Fortunately, we were prepared and slipped into the lot. We were coming here on our way to an event, but the traffic was miserable. No problem! We called and ordered our food 30 minutes in advance, so it was ready and waiting (and we could eat before sitting through a 90 minute recital). Tres bien! Chef Edward took our order over the phone and let us know that it would be 5 minutes when we got there (we were there 8 minutes before we told him we would be). I was so impressed and beyond grateful that they were so hospitable. The dining room is not large and is simple decorated with brown tablecloth clad tables and heavy high backed chairs. The food is easily shared or can be individually ordered, and everything is delicious. When you are seated, you will receive a basket of pita. I had none of the standard halves that the LOs were devouring, but the "chips" were paper thin crisps that were super fresh, light and crunchy. The best that I have ever had. For dinner, we had: Falafel Plate ($13): four huge hot and crisp falafel balls were topped with a bit of hummus and served with "Persian Salad" and hummus as well as saffron rice. The dense and crispy falafel balls were perfectly seasoned and very filling. The light and refreshing salad of chopped Persian cucumbers, tomatoes and onions with sumac and mint in a light vinaigrette was sweet and tangy. The uber fresh hummus was smooth and perfectly seasoned. It was delicious. Fattoush Salad ($11): this is a salad that I order often, and this slightly different rendition totally impressed me. It was like a Persian Salad beefed up with radishes, a ton of herbs, like purslane and mint, feta, and a little of the crispiest paper thin pita. I have never seen purslane in this salad before, and I loved it. Also, the dressing was very light and slightly tangy, so the veggies were the star. Ghormeh Sabzi ($14): this traditional stew was, like the falafel, as expected but still very good. The beef and kidney bean stew with a based of minced greens was warm and comforting. The stew was perfectly seasoned, and the meat was lean but still fall apart tender. It had a nice tangy note from the pickled lime that was fall apart tender. It was served with tah-dig, also known as crispy rice, as well as some more rice and your selection of two sides. We had Persian salad and pickles. The pickles were the only thing that I probably would not order again, because I prefer red Persian pickles to Armenian pickles. These were cucumbers, carrots, celery and cabbage that were tasty, but I would rather have the amazing hummus. The tah-dig could have been a smidge darker, but he was rushing to plate on our early arrival, which I appreciate. Koobideh Kabob ($15): a HUGE plate with two kebobs made from ground beef that is moist, tender and perfectly seasoned. Served with saffron rice and ordered with yogurt dip and barbequed tomato, DD loved every bite. Shirin Polo ($15): I never saw the orange peel, almond sweet and sour sauce, but this was not my plate and does not change the fact that it was served with the best chicken kabob that I have had in my life. I have lots of Persian friends and I love Mediterranean food, so I have had a lot of this in friends' homes and out. This was AMAZING. The tender and moist chicken had a crispy exterior from grilling but not over open fire. Chef Edward apparently has a specially designed grill. I don't know how he does it, but it is fantastic. The service here is fantastic - warm, inviting and accommodating. It's a great place to bring family. The dining room is simple and attractive. It's a great place to bring a group. The food is delicious - there is a little room for improvement to reach "perfection" but this is the best that I have had in any restaurant. 4.5 stars. read more

Most wonderful restaurant! We ware warmly welcome by three of the stuff members they show interest in where we were from (our root country ) Marian said that she was trying to learn Spanish and talked about her country Persia or Iran now. The service was excellent . Attentive knowledgeable and described ingredients and flavors with detail , The food was delicious . Done with perfection and care and I believe that this is only obtained when you care and love what you do. The restaurant is clean and comfortable easy to find plenty of parking. I'm looking forward to return. Thank you we had one of the best dinners that I can remember. read more

Amazing food and service. Some of the best Armenian food i've had and I'm Armenian. Definitely worth the drive over the hill.
