When I first saw these fried dumplings, also known as fried manti, on a friend's story, I was so excited to try them! I've found manti in Los Angeles before, but I haven't come across a fried/crispy version, and that's one of my favorite ways to have manti, so I was especially excited to try these. It took us a while to make it there since it's a little far for us, but I'm so glad we finally did. We ordered the fried dumplings for two - beef Monta dumplings and some cheese börek. Of course, portions can vary from restaurant to restaurant, but we found the overall portion to be a little small for two people. It makes a great appetizer, but I don't think the portion is quite enough for two people as a full meal. That said, they were good! We have a similar dish that we call manti, so finding something that was so familiar in concept, even though the flavors weren't exactly the same, gave me such a comforting feeling. It's a little cafe/restaurant, and one thing I especially loved was the book they had on the counter. It gave the place such a community driven, homey feeling, almost like a grandma making food for her family. There's something about that kind of atmosphere that feels familiar and brings back good memories. If you like manti or want to try these fried dumplings, I definitely recommend giving this little restaurant a try! It's a nice spot for a family meal or even a quick bite. read more

Delicious!! I've been wanting to try monta/monte/monti since I saw it on Yelp! What a delicious treat. It's like a meatball wrapped in a crispy potsticker - served with a light tomato sauce and a yogurt. The staff were so friendly and helpful, and they included a bulgar salad (delicious) because we were first timers. We also enjoyed the cheese and pastry - concoction, I can't remember the name, but it was so delicious - perfectly crispy and soft with my favorite non-chocolate food: cheese! You ever heard of CONVERGENT EVOLUTION? It's when there is independent development of similar traits or features in different, distantly related species. What happens in the natural world also happens culturally with food. Dumplings are a prime example of this (food in pocket good, replicated across many countries and cultures with their own twists even if they're on different continents). My friends and I were heading towards the Glendale area and we wanted to grab lunch beforehand and wanted something unique and not in the fisted mall area. We decided on Monta Factory and there's plenty of parking and when we went there was only 2 other tables occupied. They gotta bake/prepare the food, but they brought it to our table and answered all of our questions. Great service! Reminds me of a classy diner inside, must be all the red, white and wood. We got the: 1) Hungry Monta (small): -These are handmade baked dumplings and they're made from scratch in house. -Don't let the "small" in the name fool you, it came out in a tin bake tray. I believe that large is meant more for parties or catering, but the small is enough for a group of people. -These are dumplings made from seasoned ground beef and steeped in a tomato broth with some garlic yogurt creme on top, shaped in the titular M for Monta. -I love tomato sauce and this is like the best of the dumpling world (the exterior and interior), but also like a pasta with the tomato sauce and the beef, but it's distinctly Armenian as well. Again, convergent evolution. 2) Boiled khinkali dumplings (comes with 2, but we got 2 orders so overall 4): -This is apparently a national dish of Georgia (country, not state), and it's a large twisted soup dumplings filled with meat and spices. -This is literally XLB. Again, convergent evolution. -Warm and delicious. If you love XLB and want a more solid huge one that isn't that goopy and explosive, this is perfect. 3) Cheese Beoreg Pieces: -I can see why this is also offered as a catering dish as well. Delicious. -It's thin layer of handcrafted dough with Monterey Jack and Greek feta cheese. -Flaky, golden crispiness with the gooey cheese in the middle. Can never go wrong with dough and cheese, no matter what form. Definitely would love to go again to get more of their monta and try more of their menu. read more

In the mood for Middle Eastern dumplings, I stopped by Monta Factory because a place can't be named after monta if they aren't delicious. I've seen the dumplings also called manti if they are Turkish. I ordered the medium sized tray to go, which was enough for 4-5 servings. The tray was warmed up and packaged nicely in a cardboard box with the tomato sauce and yogurt garlic sauce on the side. This was our first experience eating Armenian food, and we truly enjoyed every moment! We ordered the baked dumplings--a Hungry Monta (small, meant for 1-2 people)--and 2 soup dumplings called Boiled Khinkhali Dumplings. Did we slurp the extra broth that was on our plates? Absolutely (lol). Both dishes were absolutely delicious! If you're trying Armenian food for the first time, this is a great spot. Parking was easy, spots right in front of the restaurant. Indoor and outdoor seating. Kid- and wheelchair-friendly (as in, I observed that the tables have enough room for mobility devices or wheelchairs). Now more than ever, we must seek to understand and care for one another, especially by supporting local businesses as finances allow. Experiencing other communities' foods is one of the easiest ways to open up our eyes to the beautiful cultures around us. Lots of portion sizes for families, and classic tomato + yogurt sauce with a few other Armenian classics you can get: khinkali dumplings (love) and their cheese berag (different, not my favorite variation in terms of cheese content and lack of flakiness). I appreciate that for kids you can get sauces on the side (highly do NOT recommend as the monta is dry otherwise and this is of course not the way you're supposed to eat it). I loved the food so much, I ate here twice during a recent, quick LA area trip. The novelty of it helped (I'd never even heard of Monta, let alone eaten them). But I tried other things, some of which were "normal" food for me, and they were great, too. First, the Monta (aka Manti). One day my husband ordered the Veggie Monta (which I ate several of), and for the second visit, I did. While they were super delicious both times, it was interesting how they were quite different from day to day. The first time they were crisp, hot, and several were actually too well done (blackened, and a bit dried out). The second time they were warm, not hot, and not as crispy. But the good news is, I didn't care. I'd happily eat either batch again, any time! The other main entrée that we each had a chance to try (on different days) was the Salmon Salad. Wild Alaskan Salmon, on a bed of greens. As you can see by my photo, there are 2 kinds of dressings: One on top of the Salmon, the other on the salad. One of them is a Tahini dressing, but the menu doesn't say what the other one is. They were both good, but the one on top of the Salmon was extraordinarily tasty. The Salmon was exceptionally well-cooked both times. Moist, tender, and flakey. We shared an Eech salad both times, which is the Armenian take on Tabbouleh. We both agreed that for our tastes, this is way better than Tabbouleh we've had. More grainy, moister, with a very refreshing taste, and (ha) way less parsley! I also tried a Cheese Beoreg (Beoreg, Boreg, Boereg, etc.), an interesting pastry made of layered, thin dough and two kinds of cheese. It was delicious (repeating myself), though I did wish it had just a bit more cheese. Finally, I had 2 baked Blini, since that is the minimum order (I really just wanted to try one Blin, but I decided I'd rather have two than none at all). It reminded me of a blintze filled with meat (though not exactly). Interesting, tasty experience. Service both visits was very friendly. Order at the counter (I had a lot of questions the first time, and they were all patiently answered), then the food is delivered to your table, within 5 minutes for both of my visits. read more

I am giving a five-star rating to Monta Factory in Glendale as a gift for Sarge's wedding by driving several tense miles to get there. This was my second visit to a "factory"-named restaurant in the past three days, and I was eager to try their signature dish. I live in Pasadena, where the original Monta Factory is located on Washington Blvd. It only opens on Tuesdays, unlike the Glendale location, which opens every day. However, when I arrived at the Pasadena location this Tuesday, there was a note posted on the door stating that the restaurant was closed from February 7 to February 21 because the owner was getting married. Congratulations to them! Despite this setback, I was still craving Monta Factory's food, so I decided to make the drive to the Glendale location, which is owned by the same person. To be honest, I had never tried Monta before - I had only seen it on YouTube. I ordered a small box of Monta that contained 40 pieces arranged in 5 rows of 8 Monta, not in a foil box as I mistakenly mentioned earlier. Each Monta was much smaller than I had imagined - about the size of a chicken wing tip. Despite their size, the Monta were delicious - the shell was slightly crispy and stuffed with beef. The sour sauce was tangy and tasted great with the sour cream. Overall, the Monta were delicious and lived up to their reputation as authentic Armenian cuisine. Armenian cuisine holds a special place in my heart because of a beautiful Armenian girl I had as a classmate. She taught me about Armenian history, including the genocide, the relationship between Russia and Turkey, and the country's religion. She even taught me how to dye eggs in the Armenian way. However, even if Armenian food and culture is not your thing, Monta Factory is still worth a visit. I also tried a piece of Su-Beoreg, which was like a piece of lasagna without meat or sauce. The cheese inside was layered and tasted fantastic. The outer piece was crispy and had a great flavor. Overall, I would highly recommend Monta Factory for anyone looking to try authentic Armenian cuisine. Don't be fooled by the small size of the Monta - they are packed with flavor and definitely worth the drive. I give Monta Factory five stars and look forward to my next visit. read more

The Hungry Monta featured flavorful, seasoned beef dumplings baked to perfection, paired with a fresh house-made tomato broth. The Monta Tomato Herb soup was just as impressive, with a rich tomato base, fragrant sautéed mint and garlic, and plenty of tiny monta dumplings. Full marks across the board! We checked this place out because of a hearty recommendation from some coworkers. We went in not really knowing about the kind of food they served but with totally open minds. From our first moments, the young lady at the counter walked us through the full menu and explained what each item was and how it was served. We tried the montas (the baked dumplings), the borreg (the cheese pastry), and the pelmeni (the soft dumpling) All of the items were delicious. Both types of dumplings were fantastic and the sauces enhanced the flavors beautifully. All of the staff were super friendly and wanted to know what we thought of the food. When I found out that I could order through Door Dash, I was in! 3/5 - Artisan Cheese Beoreg: thin layers of handcrafted dough, infused with Monterey Jack and Feta cheeses and baked to a golden crisp. This is considered a savory pastry. The crisping on top is very nice. The layers of the pastry remind me of pasta. It is very interesting. 3/5 - Hangry Monta: Seasoned ground beef enclosed in handcrafted dumplings, oven-baked and served with house made tomato broth and garlic yogurt cream. Traditionally eaten with both sauces served on top of the monta, but served on the side for take out and delivery. The dumpling dough is crispy... it reminds me of pie dough. This would be great as an appetizer at a party. 3/5 - Beef Meat Crepes: handmade oven baked crepes with seasoned ground beef, rice and spices. I had no idea what to expect. So, it seems that Monta are like a cross between little dumplings & ravioli; meatballs inside pasta but open on the side with tomato & yogurt sauce. Sounds complicated. And maybe making them is? I had lunch with a friend and we split the small(hungry) order of Monta and a chicken salad. Both were FULL OF FLAVOR and so delicious! The salad had pickled onions. Yum! The ONLY reason I'm omitting a star is because what if you came alone? To get both of those items would be a ton of food and $28! I wish there was a combo. There's a parking lot.
