I stopped by Ace to fulfill my Chinese skewer crave after having skewers at two really good places last month. Ace's intestine skewers were on point, no bad intestine taste at all and crunchy and well marinated. The lamb, tripe, chicken skin, squid were average. Do not order the 10 lamb skewers for $5.99. It's a rip off. The meat did not taste anything like the regular lamb skewers. There was no lamb taste at all. I suspect it's pork. The skewers are so tiny that it barely covers the width of the skewer. The 10 skewers ended up being less meat than one regular lamb skewer. Note that each order only comes with 1 skewer, not the two or three depicted on their menu. I was deceived by their menu. read more

I am shocked that there aren't more reviews about how absolutely TERRIBLE the service here is. The food is good, but I always have to prepare myself for the workers every time I go here. I have already been here four times and every single time it's the same horrible service. Every time I come here, they attack us for not tipping. Here's why I never tip this place: - Cleanliness is nonexistent. When they accidentally gave one of our rice cakes to another table on THEIR USED PLATE, the people told the server it wasn't theirs. So, the server took that skewer and put it on our plate. Didn't give us a new one. When we asked for a new one, he insisted it was clean enough to eat. He tried gaslighting us into thinking he didn't just take the same rice cake from other customers and give it to us. - They ALWAYS mess up your order and when they do, they charge you extra. One night, they accidentally gave us a bowl of noodles that was meant for another table. We thought they gave it to us because they messed up our order, so we ate some of it. When I checked the bill, I saw that they added it to our check without telling us. When we asked them to remove it from our bill because we didn't order it, they said, "but you ate it." They refused to let us leave without paying for the bowl of noodles, so we refused to pay for our meal unless they removed it. After a long argument, they started closing and finally caved. We didn't finish the noodles and sure we should've clarified that we didn't order it, but charging us for YOUR mistakes is unacceptable. Be a big girl and apologize. They have added food we did not order to our bill before. I kid you not, added random stuff to our bill without us knowing has happened every single time I've been here. Another time was when they forgot to give us our second beef skewer, our third rice cake skewer, our second chicken skewer, and three beef enoki skewers. We were charged for all, but never got any of them. When asked to remove these items from the bill, they got mad and threw the receipt at us. - Whenever we don't tip for their horrible service, they confront us about it and say, "We expect cash tip if you don't tip by card. You aren't leaving without tipping." We said we would tip in cash, but after paying we just stood up and left without tipping. Disrespectful. They were name calling us as we were eating and then demanded a tip. No. - If you aren't Chinese, they're super rude to you. I'm asian, but not Chinese. They called us names while we were eating, talked about us to their coworkers while pointing at us, avoided filling our cups with water, ignored us when we said, "excuse me," etc. - 2 out of the 4 times I have been here, they threw the receipt at me when they see that I didn't tip in card. Again, food is good, BUT there is an even better place I'd like to recommend! Discovery Fusion BBQ in SJ closes late everyday and their skewers are SO good. I honestly prefer this place over AceKing BBQ because the service is wonderful and everything tastes great. The ambience is also just so much better and more aesthetically pleasing. Pretty small inside and they were playing techno/K-pop music. We ordered the house special fried rice, cucumber & tofu strip salad, sliced pork (spicy), garlic oysters and a couple of skewers (beef, chicken skin, lamb). As other reviewers mentioned, for the meat skewers they all pretty much have the same seasoning.. like salt, cumin, chili powder. Flavors get kinda heavy and since service was pretty crappy our waters weren't refilled. I did enjoy the fried rice (eggs, hot dogs, shrimp, onions), sliced pork & fried chicken skin though. The garlic oysters were too salty. Most of the employees spoke Mandarin... which was a little inconvenient. They're open pretty late tho so guess that's a plus. $25.00 minimum if using credit card. Got take out for the family. Our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomach as we ordered a lot of skewers. Easy online ordering system, only thing was that we were not able to adjust the spices. Some Family members are not able to tolerate any spices. We heated the food up once we were home. It was ok not great but also not bad. We had beef, chicken and lamb skewers to squid and sausage skewers as well as veggies such as eggplant, sweet potato and bell peppers and we tried the grilled buns. The spices were all the same to me but it was spread out unevenly. I was able to tolerate the spices on almost everything except for the bell peppers. There was definitely a kick to that. Other things that we tried was the preserved century egg, the pig ears and the pig brain. Century egg is not my thing but the pig ears was nice little surprise, it was crispy and had nice seasoning to it. The pig brain dish was very rich and creamy but too spicy, I was only able to sample a little bit of it. Fried rice was definitely too greasy. The grilled buns were ok, felt like it was more of a French bread texture than the "mantou ". All in all, it was filling meal with lots of leftovers. If you decide to dine here and you don't speak Mandarin, get ready to be discriminated. We're party of 9, 4 people seated on the couch side and needed 5 chairs but there're only 4 chairs and a stool. We grabbed another chair from another table that's no one seating at to sit, since we want to be comfortable while eating, and a male staff came and demand the chair back and make us take the stool for our 9th person, took the chair and put it back to the empty table no one seating at. No one checked in with us while we order on the phone, we had to ask one of our Taiwanese friends to ask for water in Mandarin then we got water 2 minutes later. I came here on a Saturday night at opening as we just happened to walk by and was curious of what this place was (attached to Ume Tea). It smelled very good so I ordered a few items take out to try as a snack. I was told to pay when I picked up the food, about a 20-30 minute wait. They were to text me when items were ready. About 30 minutes later, I walked back in to check to see if it was ready since the shop was relatively empty with just one table sat and they waved that my order was already sitting up front. I may have missed a sign saying cash only... but was only told that when paying during pick up - thank goodness I had some cash on me. What rubbed me the wrong way was them speaking to each other in Mandarin right in front of me about me. I just ordered in English since it was minimal interaction and I didn't think much about it. The guy behind the counter said to another girl - along the lines of "她不注意" - 'she didn't pay attention' about me missing the fact that it was cash only (under $25 or certain amount - was unclear). Yes, it was probably my mistake for missing the sign or something... but they didn't need to be so snarky and laugh about it right in front of me. Once the guy took the cash and got my change, it was given back to me in such exasperation like I didn't want to pay. Just because it doesn't seem like I speak/understand Chinese doesn't give people the right to be rude right in front of others, especially customers. For context, I grew up in OAK Chinatown with shop/restaurant owners joking at/about me while I eat as typical Asian parents... there's a difference between jesting with customers and just being rude. As for the food, prices were very reasonable; service and quality...not so much. The dry rub spice over everything was pretty good, a little spicy and quite a lot of fennel seeds (should be that? I liked it). Chicken skewer (minimum order of 2): There was a burnt bitter aftertaste to the chicken for looking perfectly cooked, on the dry end. I'd have to assume the flavor came from the grill (2.5/5) Chicken heart (1): Nicely cooked, went well with the dry seasoning (4/5) Sausage (1): A bit of a char, but nice and salty (4/5) Fish Ball (1): Loose in the to-go box. Not the round skewer ones I expected, but the square/rectangle hot pot tofu fish cake ones. (?/5 - tasted fine, but curious) Final Thoughts: It was a bit of a bizarre interaction and everyone with me that evening heard about it as well, had a bit to say about their personal experience (those that have tried it as well). The food was good but this was the worst customer service I have ever experienced. They forgot to put in our order for 4 different dishes and on top of that they helped everyone else but us so we just sat there waiting. They would check up on the tables right next to us but would completely ignore us. Our food took forever to come out. So when it came down to paying I usually leave cash tip because when I was a server that is what I preferred. So when it came down to signing the receipt I didn't put tip on there and he really stopped me infront of everyone saying "you have to leave a tip. It's not included in the bill" out loud and I explained that we had already left the cash tip on the table. That part really annoyed me the most. Ace King is a very reasonable price, almost 1.50$/skewer, but the customer service and the taste of the food is not as great as other BBQ location. The only thing I recommend here are the fish ball, enoki noodles, and beef skewer, other than that, nothing is good here. Sadly once you eat one skewer, almost everything else tastes the same because they use the same seasoning for all the food also ALOT I mean ALOT of oil to the drop it drips and soaks up the whole plate. I wouldn't recommend going here and I wouldn't come back to here. Great spot to go to with a group of friends when you are having that mid night craving. Ace King BBQ only opens for dinner and they are lit on weekends (so there may be a wait on late weekend nights). They do not only serve skewers but also fried rice, noodles and other appetizers. How it works is that for the skewers- they give you a menu with a marker so you mark however many skewers you would like to order. They are really fast at their service and usually the wait is no longer than 10 minutes for food. I do noticed that not all their servers speaks English and mostly Mandarin speakers.. but that does not affect anything. My favorite skewer to order is probably their chicken skin because it is unique and not every place make it as crunchy/fatty. The pricing for Ace King is fair and not over priced. read more

Definitely one of the better skewer places in town! There are so many of these places popping up all over East bay and South Bay, but this place is definitely one of the favorite ones I've tried! Their seasoning is on point, and their meat is always perfectly grilled with a slight bit of crispy char. I also love that they have the yelp waitlist to use on those weekend nights when everyone wants some late night skewers. The service is what I would call passable and expected. The ladies who served me would always refill water and napkins when asked, but won't be offering any. They can come off as a bit abrasive but you know they don't really mean any harm. This place is straight fire. I love this place. I take everyone that visits me here and they love it as well. I use to go here almost every weekend before I moved north. They recently renovated and the decor has HK vibes. As an ace king veteran lol, below are tips on how to enjoy it to the max. When busy: 1. Expect a long wait to be seated. Queue in line ahead of time if possible, especially with a bigger group. Ace isn't big. 2. When seated, order everything at once. The sooner you place your order the sooner you'll receive it. 3. Grab a drink while you wait. They expanded their drink selection with drinks you normally won't be able to get elsewhere. Don't: 1. Don't order to go and expect the food to be great. Skewers are meant to be eaten right away. 2. Don't expect that your order is all cooked at the same time. One item may be ready in 5 mins while the rest of your order might take 15 or 30 mins. 3. Don't over order. A lot of folks over order and have to take the food to go. 4. Don't order the house fried rice non spicy. It's day and night in taste. Everything on the menus is seasoned the same so there's only one spice level. If you can't handle it, you probably think black pepper is spicy too. read more
