    84 Lumber

    84 Lumber

I work for a construction company as their office manager, so I don't know much about the other…read moreside of the field. I was tasked to pick up lumber and haul it to a site due to an employee calling out. I spoke with I think it was Graham and he provided the best customer service. From assisting with loading to explaining how I should drive with lumber sticking out the flatbed, he simply killed it. Made my day 20x less stressful. Five stars, would haul from here again.

We had the worst customer service experience we've ever had at this store. It's almost too long to…read morerecount here but I will give it a try. We ordered an Anderson patio door here in October and specified that we wanted an outswing door. From this point on, every single encounter with 84 Lumber was full of frustrations. Our name/contact info was never entered into the system so any time I called, it was like pulling teeth to even get started. The delivery of the door was scheduled but then the day of delivery, no one showed up so after multiple phone calls, we found out that the person who ordered our door and scheduled the delivery had been fired. We finally had it delivered and the contractor came a few days later to install the door. Turns out the fired employee ordered the wrong door. Not only did it not open out, it was also a lower-quality door. Which the contractors did not realize until they had already taken out the old door. Given that this was now November, they had to install the wrong door so that we weren't living with a hole in the wall. When we called 84 Lumber to make sure we wouldn't be charged for this, we were told the manager didn't even bother to show up that day but the visiting manager assured us that we should go ahead with the installing of the wrong door until the correct door could be ordered/installed. So we went into the store 2 days later to order the correct door. The salesperson printed out the invoice so that we could double-check it. At this point we found out that we had been overcharged for the lower-quality wrong door by $1400!! The manager did not seem at all concerned about this, which only makes me wonder how many times this kind of fraud is happening. We were told the door would arrive on 12/20. I called the store on 12/20 and was told the door was in. They never called to tell us. Based on the label on the box, we think it had arrived to the store at least a week prior. Why were we not called? Because of this delay, it could not be installed before January. Luckily, this was the correct door. But of course, the contractors had to come out again to take out the wrong door and put in the right door. So we paid the contractors $500 more than we would have if it had been the right door to begin with. As long as this summary is, it cannot adequately capture the hassle and stress that we had to go through thanks to this store's complete incompetence. The only good thing is that had we not gotten the wrong door, we would have never known we had been overcharged by $1400. But you cannot overcharge a customer by that amount of money and act like it's no big deal. You cannot screw something up so entirely that the customer has to pay $500 more for the contractor to fix the issue. I have never experienced such incompetence in my life. If I was this bad at my job, I would have been fired years ago.

AMAZING! If I could give Whitmer Decks six (or more) stars, I wouldn't hesitate…read more Cliff Whitmer and his entire crew--Sam, Mike, Pavlo, Wade, and Keen--truly knocked it out of the park from start to finish. From our very first meeting with Cliff (the company owner!) to the final walk-through with Sam, the project manager, the experience was exceptional every step of the way. The communication throughout the entire process was outstanding. Not once did we feel anything less than a top priority. Texts were answered within an hour, and emails were always returned within hours. That level of responsiveness gave us complete confidence and peace of mind. Mike, Pavlo, and Wade were the primary builders, and they were phenomenal. They treated us like rock stars during the entire three-and-a-half-week build. Mike, the lead carpenter, took the time to explain every phase of the project in detail, which my wife and I truly appreciated. Whitmer Decks removed our old deck and built a beautiful new 14x12 screened porch, along with a 10x10 deck and staircase. I'm no professional photographer, but the results speak for themselves--we are absolutely thrilled. We can't wait for warmer weather so we can fully enjoy our stunning new space. The craftsmanship is simply incredible. These guys are true artists. Every time we look at the work Whitmer Decks completed, we're blown away all over again. Thank you to Cliff, Sam, Mike, Pavlo, Wade, Keen--and Spark Roofing as well. You are all amazing, and we will not hesitate to give our highest recommendation to anyone who asks. I want to mention that their estimate/upgrade process was incredibly easy and actually fun to work with! Each upgrade came with about 5-10 photos that were VERY helpful in envisioning what the final product would actually look like! With gratitude, Shawn Purcell

Spent an hour at my house discussing and taking measurements. Waited nearly two weeks for the quote and get a call they don't "replace" and confirmed they said they only do new construction per the "manager". Missed HOA deadline for May due to waiting on this final quote to make my decision to submit the application. Frustrating. They clearly didn't want the job or update your website to remove "deck replacement".

Right from the beginning…read moreMike made us feel very comfortable and assured us he could replace our 20 year+ s me deck and patio within our budget. He was flexible with our schedules and answered all our questions. However, once he had our deposit that quickly changed. Mike's quote for a FLAGSTONE patio was originally $12-14k and advised if we switch to pavers it would be significantly less. However, after patiently waiting for him to finalize the numbers, he provided us a revised quote for the same size PAVER patio for $24k. Mike could not provide a clear or consistent answer for why the price doubled. At first he said it is because he omitted $8k of debris removal and haul away costs. (Which was our first red flag - how does a professional contractor with 17 years' experience exclude debris removal when doing a full deck and patio replacement?) Then Mike said the quote was based on a smaller patio. We were clear from the beginning the size of the patio can't decrease. So this answer is either false or he had a glaring error on his end. In fairness to us, we asked to see the drawing of the smaller patio that supported the original quote. We patiently waited; however, Mike was unable or unwilling to provide the requested drawing. Then Mike blamed another contractor saying that he doesn't set the prices. If that were true, how did he confidently quote us $12-14k before we gave the deposit? That question is still unanswered. Mike also was unable to complete the design in a timely manner - taking over 7 weeks to provide a plan and pricing to replace our same footprint. We were told construction could be completed by the first week in December - turns out that was also false. We put in over 2 months of time, effort, and planning into this project and are now waking away incredibly disappointed and frustrated. For a company with such great reviews, this is a true shame. Despite all these red flags, it's is important to note that, until recently, we wanted to find a way to make this work - after all mistakes happen. However, having an owner not be able to take ownership of his mistakes and work with the customer to find a solution is just bad business. I strongly advise anyone thinking of doing business with this company to be very careful. Sneaking in costs and not being able to back them up is simply wrong. We clearly dodged a bullet, so for that I am grateful.
