Cliff Whitmer and his entire crew--Sam, Mike, Pavlo, Wade, and Keen--truly knocked it out of the park from start to finish. From our very first meeting with Cliff (the company owner!) to the final walk-through with Sam, the project manager, the experience was exceptional every step of the way. The communication throughout the entire process was outstanding. Not once did we feel anything less than a top priority. Texts were answered within an hour, and emails were always returned within hours. That level of responsiveness gave us complete confidence and peace of mind. Mike, Pavlo, and Wade were the primary builders, and they were phenomenal. They treated us like rock stars during the entire three-and-a-half-week build. Mike, the lead carpenter, took the time to explain every phase of the project in detail, which my wife and I truly appreciated. Whitmer Decks removed our old deck and built a beautiful new 14x12 screened porch, along with a 10x10 deck and staircase. I'm no professional photographer, but the results speak for themselves--we are absolutely thrilled. We can't wait for warmer weather so we can fully enjoy our stunning new space. The craftsmanship is simply incredible. These guys are true artists. Every time we look at the work Whitmer Decks completed, we're blown away all over again. Complete waste of my time. To set up the appointment for a quote, I shared I wanted to replace my wood decks with composite and screen in the lower deck. It was very clear. Spent an hour at my house discussing and taking measurements. Waited nearly two weeks for the quote and get a call they don't "replace" and confirmed they said they only do new construction per the "manager". Missed HOA deadline for May due to waiting on this final quote to make my decision to submit the application. Frustrating. They clearly didn't want the job or update your website to remove "deck replacement". read more

There's an old adage in woodworking..."measure twice and cut once." This adage is ingrained in Whitmer's deck building crew but I think they actually measure THREE times and cut once. Their attention to detail is their hallmark. I was thoroughly pleased over the craftsmanship his crew demonstrated. Who else would use #1 grade pressure treated wood in their framing, round over sharp wood edges, take extra care not to overcut the steps in stringers, or precisely measure lengths and angles to give showroom quality joints. Yes, they're that good and I feel very fortunate to have Cliff (owner builder of Whitmer Decks) and his crew work on our deck. I vetted four deck building firms with costs differing by a factor of two. Cliff's quote, even with the premium materials used, was only slightly more than the low bidder. I'm very happy with their work, from the demolition, timely completion, quality of products used, design and final appearance. I would recommend them without reservation; they are easy to deal with, answer all questions and are fairly priced. The only problem encountered with the project was the needlessly convoluted and disjointed review process from Fairfax County before a building permit could be issued. The officials involved in the permitting process slowed things considerably and led to uncertainty whether our project could be completed at all. read more

We searched and searched for a deck builder and were so unhappy with the (un)responsiveness of the people who we contacted. That was until we found Whitmer Decks. I filled out the online form and within a few hours, Lisa contacted me. Cliff came out to look at the space within a few days. I was so impressed with his knowledge (permits, codes, expectations, etc.) and what we would need to do in order to make everything work. We loved the deck design he came up with and were excited they could fit us in before the end of the season. They only have one crew, so we did have to wait a few months until they started. Cliff kept us up-to-date on the start time and what to expect on weekly (or more than weekly) basis. We were so happy with the quality of craftsmanship and the friendliness of the crew, I can understand why they only have one crew. Cliff is on-site for (and assisting with) the build. If you are planning to add or replace an existing deck or screened porch there is no better company with which to work than Whitmer Decks. They are hands down the most professional and straightforward contractor with whom we've worked in the course of the 17 years we've been in our home. First the bad news -- call Whitmer now and get the ball rolling, as they are already booking for 2022. They are booked solid for 2021 and in such high demand that it is very likely 2022 will soon be completely scheduled as well. The good news far outweighs their scheduling. Whitmer Decks is a very small company comprised of a single crew of three wonderful gentlemen, Cliff Whitmer, and his wife Lisa Whitmer. Based upon the glowing recommendation from a neighbor we never bothered to seek estimates or call another company -- we were already sold on Whitmer Decks before our first phone call. Lisa Whitmer is your point person, personable, professional, helpful, and adept at fielding all of your questions. Upon making your initial call, Lisa will take your information and schedule an appointment for Cliff to come to your home so he can examine the site, listen to your needs, and get a solid understanding of what you wish to have done. Cliff will listen to your requirements, make suggestions, offer ideas, and takes measurements to design your deck or porch. In our case, we were replacing an existing deck and we requested an identical deck to maintain the current footprint. Cliff will develop detailed plans and provide you with an accurate estimate, as well as prices for additional features - do you wish to use Trex? Will the deck planks be nailed or screwed, etc? It helps to know what you wish to have constructed before Cliff begins the design effort as changes and additions to the work can prolong the planning process. It is not feasible to have the job scheduled until the plans are complete and the estimated work time can be determined. You will need to provide a property plat to Whitmer Decks and they will arrange for the construction permits. Upon making it onto the Whitmer schedule, Lisa does not forget you. Construction schedules are always at the mercy of rain, early/late snows, and other intrusions that frequently push work out by one or more days. Lisa professionally adjusts all work schedules as delays occur and she is fantastic at emailing clients of the shifting dates so that you can plan accordingly. You will never feel alone; Cliff and Lisa are with you for the entire process. Materials are delivered the day before work commences and two trailers are parked in front of your home. Over the next few days any existing deck will be demolished and the team quickly and methodically constructs your new structure. In our case, our small deck was completed in 2 1/2 days!! Whitmer Decks has been in business for 17 years and they deliberately maintain a small company to provide outstanding service and solidly built decks and porches that will be the envy of your neighborhood. We found Whitmer Decks after admiring a newly built deck in our adjacent neighborhood. After meeting with Cliff and seeing his enthusiasm for designing decks based on your wants and needs, it was a no-brainer. When it came down to building time, Cliff was always on-site (he and his crew of 3-4 people are IT - there is no revolving door of workers), and they were as pleasant as can be. The materials were great quality and the attention to detail was magnificent. We had an elevated deck built that was a bit tricky with the way our back yard was set up.
