We searched and searched for a deck builder and were so unhappy with the (un)responsiveness of the people who we contacted. That was until we found Whitmer Decks. I filled out the online form and within a few hours, Lisa contacted me. Cliff came out to look at the space within a few days. I was so impressed with his knowledge (permits, codes, expectations, etc.) and what we would need to do in order to make everything work. We loved the deck design he came up with and were excited they could fit us in before the end of the season. They only have one crew, so we did have to wait a few months until they started. Cliff kept us up-to-date on the start time and what to expect on weekly (or more than weekly) basis. We were so happy with the quality of craftsmanship and the friendliness of the crew, I can understand why they only have one crew. Cliff is on-site for (and assisting with) the build. He was honest, friendly and very accommodating. I cannot say enough about Whitmer Decks. You should use them! read more

AMAZING! If I could give Whitmer Decks six (or more) stars, I wouldn't hesitate. Cliff Whitmer and his entire crew--Sam, Mike, Pavlo, Wade, and Keen--truly knocked it out of the park from start to finish. From our very first meeting with Cliff (the company owner!) to the final walk-through with Sam, the project manager, the experience was exceptional every step of the way. The communication throughout the entire process was outstanding. Not once did we feel anything less than a top priority. Texts were answered within an hour, and emails were always returned within hours. That level of responsiveness gave us complete confidence and peace of mind. Mike, Pavlo, and Wade were the primary builders, and they were phenomenal. They treated us like rock stars during the entire three-and-a-half-week build. Mike, the lead carpenter, took the time to explain every phase of the project in detail, which my wife and I truly appreciated. Whitmer Decks removed our old deck and built a beautiful new 14x12 screened porch, along with a 10x10 deck and staircase. I'm no professional photographer, but the results speak for themselves--we are absolutely thrilled. We can't wait for warmer weather so we can fully enjoy our stunning new space. The craftsmanship is simply incredible. These guys are true artists. Every time we look at the work Whitmer Decks completed, we're blown away all over again. Thank you to Cliff, Sam, Mike, Pavlo, Wade, Keen--and Spark Roofing as well. You are all amazing, and we will not hesitate to give our highest recommendation to anyone who asks. I want to mention that their estimate/upgrade process was incredibly easy and actually fun to work with! Each upgrade came with about 5-10 photos that were VERY helpful in envisioning what the final product would actually look like! With gratitude, Shawn Purcell read more

Complete waste of my time. To set up the appointment for a quote, I shared I wanted to replace my wood decks with composite and screen in the lower deck. It was very clear. Spent an hour at my house discussing and taking measurements. Waited nearly two weeks for the quote and get a call they don't "replace" and confirmed they said they only do new construction per the "manager". Missed HOA deadline for May due to waiting on this final quote to make my decision to submit the application. Frustrating. They clearly didn't want the job or update your website to remove "deck replacement". read more

The Whitmer Deck folks were awesome, from start to finish. They were fast, cordial, and did a great job on our deck and screened-in porch. We highly recommend them! read more

Very nice and professional estimator, but still waiting for proposal six days after visit. Looking forward to seeing proposal.

We selected Whitmer Decks to replace our 36-year-old existing deck. We made the right choice. Whitmer was professional from the first meeting to the final inspection. The pre-construction process was thorough and complete. They answered all our questions, advised us on options, and were completely open and transparent with respect to pricing. They offered numerous options for our consideration with schematics and costs for each one. And we could not have been happier with the actual construction. The construction crew was skilled, attentive to details, and meticulous. We love our new deck and highly recommend Whitmer Deck if you are considering a new deck or replacing an old one. read more

Whitmer Decks, LLC just completed construction of our 1500 sq ft deck of wood and Trec material that exceeded our expectations. Cliff Whitmer, the owner, operator, designer, skilled engineer, and hands-on construction crew leader of his three skilled craftsmen. He and his team build our deck that exceeded our expectations in every way. Cliff Whitmer is a man of high integrity and honestly. He and his crew were a joy to work with from start to finish. Cliff keeps his word, builds on time, on budget, and to the highest level of quality I have ever seen. He and his team of full time, experienced carpenters pay great attention to detail that results in an outside living space of impeccably high quality and beauty. My wife and I have nothing but praise for Cliff Whitmer because he is a highly educated master deck builder and designer with enormous skill and experience. If you want it done right, we highly recommend Cliff Whitmer and his crew of fine carpenters. read more

There's an old adage in woodworking..."measure twice and cut once." This adage is ingrained in Whitmer's deck building crew but I think they actually measure THREE times and cut once. Their attention to detail is their hallmark. I was thoroughly pleased over the craftsmanship his crew demonstrated. Who else would use #1 grade pressure treated wood in their framing, round over sharp wood edges, take extra care not to overcut the steps in stringers, or precisely measure lengths and angles to give showroom quality joints. Yes, they're that good and I feel very fortunate to have Cliff (owner builder of Whitmer Decks) and his crew work on our deck. I vetted four deck building firms with costs differing by a factor of two. Cliff's quote, even with the premium materials used, was only slightly more than the low bidder. I'm very happy with their work, from the demolition, timely completion, quality of products used, design and final appearance. I would recommend them without reservation; they are easy to deal with, answer all questions and are fairly priced. The only problem encountered with the project was the needlessly convoluted and disjointed review process from Fairfax County before a building permit could be issued. The officials involved in the permitting process slowed things considerably and led to uncertainty whether our project could be completed at all. read more

If you are planning to add or replace an existing deck or screened porch there is no better company with which to work than Whitmer Decks. They are hands down the most professional and straightforward contractor with whom we've worked in the course of the 17 years we've been in our home. First the bad news -- call Whitmer now and get the ball rolling, as they are already booking for 2022. They are booked solid for 2021 and in such high demand that it is very likely 2022 will soon be completely scheduled as well. The good news far outweighs their scheduling. Whitmer Decks is a very small company comprised of a single crew of three wonderful gentlemen, Cliff Whitmer, and his wife Lisa Whitmer. Based upon the glowing recommendation from a neighbor we never bothered to seek estimates or call another company -- we were already sold on Whitmer Decks before our first phone call. Lisa Whitmer is your point person, personable, professional, helpful, and adept at fielding all of your questions. Upon making your initial call, Lisa will take your information and schedule an appointment for Cliff to come to your home so he can examine the site, listen to your needs, and get a solid understanding of what you wish to have done. Cliff will listen to your requirements, make suggestions, offer ideas, and takes measurements to design your deck or porch. In our case, we were replacing an existing deck and we requested an identical deck to maintain the current footprint. Cliff will develop detailed plans and provide you with an accurate estimate, as well as prices for additional features - do you wish to use Trex? Will the deck planks be nailed or screwed, etc? It helps to know what you wish to have constructed before Cliff begins the design effort as changes and additions to the work can prolong the planning process. It is not feasible to have the job scheduled until the plans are complete and the estimated work time can be determined. You will need to provide a property plat to Whitmer Decks and they will arrange for the construction permits. Upon making it onto the Whitmer schedule, Lisa does not forget you. Construction schedules are always at the mercy of rain, early/late snows, and other intrusions that frequently push work out by one or more days. Lisa professionally adjusts all work schedules as delays occur and she is fantastic at emailing clients of the shifting dates so that you can plan accordingly. You will never feel alone; Cliff and Lisa are with you for the entire process. Materials are delivered the day before work commences and two trailers are parked in front of your home. Over the next few days any existing deck will be demolished and the team quickly and methodically constructs your new structure. In our case, our small deck was completed in 2 1/2 days!! Whitmer Decks has been in business for 17 years and they deliberately maintain a small company to provide outstanding service and solidly built decks and porches that will be the envy of your neighborhood. Each deck is constructed with attention to the smallest details, craftsmanship, and a compulsion to satisfy each and every customer. Bravo to Whitmer Decks!! read more

We love our Whitmer deck! And we loved the professional way Cliff runs his business. On time, we'll designed, a high quality product, and a well-trained staff supervised each day by Cliff. Communication with Cliff and Lisa was easy. They quickly responded to our questions and gave us clear information about what to expect before and during construction. We also appreciated their clear price list so we could determine what we needed vs. what would just be nice. Our sturdy deck will last for many years. read more

Simply the best. They designed and built our deck two years ago. I'm sitting on the deck now enjoying the fire pit and, even two years later, I said to myself "wow, what a great deck". That prompted me to go to yelp and give them 5 stars. Great design, they take care of everything (permits etc). They show up when they promise too, the structure is rock solid, workmanship is simply outstanding. We could not be happier. Plus they're the nicest people to work with. Not the cheapest but far and away the best quality deck builder in the area. read more

Whitmer Decks are great. They completed a large project for us. Cliff (love the name) told us how we could save money by using a different product, then we first thought, and we really appreciated that honesty. You don't typically see that in the construction field. They finished the job on time and under budget. Thank you Whitmer Decks read more

From initial in-home quote, to structural design, and then the quick 5 day start-to-finish construction, Whitmer Decks' skilled crew were a pleasure to work when it came to building our new deck. Cliff is an extremely reliable contractor, which was ultimately why we selected Whitmer Decks to build a new second story deck off the back of our town home (including a newly installed sliding glass door). He was on site contributing to the build each day during construction as initially promised. His responsiveness to questions, and overall attention to detail is unprecedented, and truly characteristic of a family owned and operated business that takes genuine pride in their finished product. We would highly recommend Whitmer Decks to anyone that is considering an addition or upgrade to their outdoor living space. The showcase on his website speaks for itself. read more

We found Whitmer Decks after admiring a newly built deck in our adjacent neighborhood. After meeting with Cliff and seeing his enthusiasm for designing decks based on your wants and needs, it was a no-brainer. When it came down to building time, Cliff was always on-site (he and his crew of 3-4 people are IT - there is no revolving door of workers), and they were as pleasant as can be. The materials were great quality and the attention to detail was magnificent. We had an elevated deck built that was a bit tricky with the way our back yard was set up. Although I did not get other quotes before picking Whitmer Decks, I have seen what happens when people contract out for their deck building, and I knew that was NOT what I wanted - and I thought the price was very reasonable for the size, quality, and upgrades we received. Thanks Cliff! read more

Cliff and his team completed our deck on time and on budget with excellent craftsmanship. We obtained estimates from a few companies. Whitmer Deck's estimate and interaction with us during that phase made this company standout. When we choose Whitmer Decks, we were willing to wait a few months for the work to start just because we were impressed with the estimate and quote phase. Lisa and Cliff both kept us informed of each step in the process from permitting, start date and delivery of materials. Once the job started, Cliff and his team answered any questions we had. They went out of their way to make sure the deck was installed where there were no conflicts with downspouts and water valves. We love the Deck! read more

How lucky I was to have been referred to Whitmer Decks to consult on a plan for my deck needs. Cliff is beyond knowledgeable. His attention to detail and knowledge of how things should be are evident in his photo gallery. He uses quality materials and has an eye for design. What more could you ask for? read more

We found Cliff and Whitmer Decks earlier this year after searching through various review sites. We ended up going with them to replace two balconies/decks on our townhouse, and I could not be happier with the service or the results. Cliff kept us up-to-date on timing and schedules, and completed the work in less time than he'd expected. And the workmanship and craftsmanship is absolutely outstanding! I would go with them again in a flash, no question. read more
