Update to my original review. My first review was in January 2013 after the deck was finished. As you can see from the pictures, Sunburst did not use pressure treated wood, so now our deck is rotted underneath, the deck's rods won't stay in the hand rails and the white fascia is popping off. Its just a matter of time before the Trex fasteners start coming out. We started noticing the sinking a few years ago (so a couple years after Sunburst completed the job) and every company said it would be a ton of work. Basically like paying for a whole new deck again. At the beginning of 2020, we noticed another fascia had popped off, and underneath the wood was rotting! I have no idea how long this had been happening since it was covered. Two years into our deck, it was sinking. And then, 7 years in, we noticed part of the deck was rotted. We can't find a deck company who will take this "small job" to replace the rotted part so here we sit 8 years after the deck was completed with a rotted, sinking deck that is getting worse by the day. read more

On time and beautiful! Only complaint we had was that the PM was sometimes slow to respond and didn't communicate status/ipdates.

Regrettably, I am posting this review to express my family's disappointment with Sunburst Deck construction. Below are some of the issues we encountered after selecting Sunburst as a contractor to repair and install concrete footer on our deck, which in our understanding is a relatively minor work for deck construction companies: Communication: Sunburst agreed to contact us to confirm the time the crew will be at our house to perform the work. This did not happen. As a result, while I was at work, we were alerted by our home surveillance that an individual had rung our door and was walking around our property. The individual was not wearing a Sunburst shirt and the vehicle parked in front of our home did not have a Sunburst logo. Therefore, out of concern for the safety of our family and our home, I left work in the middle of the day to find out what the individual was up to. Once I arrived, I was able to find the individual who told me that he was with Sunburst and he was there to work on the property. Sunburst's failure to confirm the time as agreed resulted in me having to leave work unexpectedly. Quality of Work: The crew did not complete the work that we requested, after we had paid a deposit. When I arrived, I noticed that the concrete footers were not in place as requested during the quote. An individual assured me that the work was not complete, and another crew would come out the following day to put the concrete footers in place and to remove the debris from the front yard. I thought this did not sound right at the time, but I decided to place my trust in the individual because he was the onsite representative for Sunburst. The following day on Friday, my wife called and was told that the job was complete, and footer would not be installed. After a couple of phone calls a Sunburst project manager admitted to the error and said they would come out to correct the issue. After discovering additional issues throughout the weekend as detailed in the photos below, we declined Sunburst's offer to send a different crew to fix their error. Customer Service: We explained to Sunburst that due to the haphazard treatment of our property, our family was not comfortable with them returning to our property to fix their mistakes. At one point we were told that we were being unfair to them and they felt entitled to keep the $1,125 deposit for mistakes they made replacing the posts on our deck. As a result of their negligence, we are now left to redo the work they had done in addition to the work we set out to do in the first place, while being $1,125 out. read more

They built a deck for our swim spa. They came highly recommended by our friends, who had done the same project. They were good communicators, and they were responsive to our questions and concerns. The quality of the work is very good, and we are pleased with the outcome. As contractors go, they are one of the better choices. read more

We had a front porch project planned and talked to 10+ other companies before getting to Sunburst. Jon was amazing to consult with -- he did his research for us free of cost on the planning, permits, etc and through his research gave us critical information that nobody else bothered to tell us or look into. We wasted money and time with other companies who didn't do any of their due diligence with this and could have been out thousands of dollars in sunk costs on a porch that wouldn't have worked. Avoid this company. We hired Sunburst for a fairly large project: a new covered Trex deck and new Trex porch, and a wood fence. They began the work in March 2016, but did not complete until September 2016. The entire experience was a nightmare, which is still ongoing today (Sept 2017). We have posted the photos on Yelp. The biggest issue is that our Trex deck is falling apart, which the Trex representative attributed to improper installation and advised that our warranty could be void. Sunburst is a Trex certified installer, yet they failed to install our deck and porch properly. Other workmanship issues include cracked fence posts, warped fence panels, and deck lights popping out of the Trex. From an administrative standpoint, Sunburst also failed. After the work was done and the final payment was made, we received notice from our county of residence that there was not enough distance between our deck roof and the neighbor. We thought Sunburst had taken care of this with the county; they told us they were working on it and we would be getting a waiver. In addition, it took repeated requests to get a final bill showing that we made the final payment and our balance was zero. From a logistics perspective, Sunburst definitely failed. Their workers would disappear for days or more at a time to work on other projects, with no communication at all. We were often left wondering when or if they'd be back. During the seven-month project, materials were strewn all over our front and back yard. There was miscommunication between the workers and the people delivering/retrieving materials. Overall, there was little to no communication from the office on most issues; we spent an inordinate amount of time repeatedly reaching out to them and trying to sort out issues. We even wrote to their president, who responded with a letter that was no more than lip service. The other reviewers who gave four and five stars seem to have had better experiences, but we certainly did not and are still living the nightmare almost a year after we paid the final bill. read more

We contacted them several times to ask about some work we wanted done. They never even answered our calls.

So after all is said and done, I would not recommend Sunburst. We are still mostly happy with the addition we did, but all the below still applies - especially the part about how they did work that we specifically said we did not want - the posts in the center of the view. The kicker is that when we tried to address the issues we were met with a bunch of lip service and more bad craftsmanship. The crew was sent back to our house on several occasions - at least two, maybe three - to re-do the crappy work they did. It took WAY too long to get Chad out to see the shoddy work himself - which he also admitted was shoddy. When he did come out he promised that everything would get fixed, and even offered up some extra pieces and crayon-things (which never showed up) to make the posts look better..."we'll take care of you" he said. Then we get an email saying he'll get an estimate to us on how much it'll be to do those extra pieces he had just promised us. Ummm, NO! The crew tidied up most of the shoddy work (not all of it, and not all "fixes" were fixes, like putting rough cut pine on the ceiling where it should have been finished pine) and we decided to cut our losses. At this point, after over 7 months of this crap, we just don't want to deal with them anymore. I recommend you look elsewhere if you want your work done well and timely. read more

My family and i were looking to ad a deck to our home. With the help of Yelp we contacting a few companies for estimates. Sunburst construction was by far the least expensive for the type of deck we wanted and they had some nice pictures on yelp and decent reviews so we chose them and glad we did. They did a very nice job on our new deck! It looks beautiful! The guys worked non-stop from dawn to dusk until it was completed including during a few of the coldest days in December that we had. They charge 40% of the job when u sign the contract, the other 40% when u get the materials and the remaining 20% after its completed to ur satisfaction. There were a few minor things we didn't like at first but it was taken care of promptly to our liking. I would recommend them to friends and family. Happy with our deck and cant wait to enjoy it in the summer! read more

This spring I had Sunburst resurface the floor and railing of my deck from original wood to dark brown Trex/composite material. They did and excellent job and it was completed in a timely matter. After having some customer service issues and not being at all satisfied in our dealings with them I can say that I do not feel this is the norm for this company or how they try and conduct business. While I do still feel Mr. Janjic could definitely use some work on his customer service skills the owners and managers made every effort to resolve our issues and see that we changed our opinion of their company and how they operated. We had to re-do our wood rotting front entrance/porch and I had heard about this company through my valpak. I called them up and set up an appointment. B was the rep that came and talked me about the project, the warranty and the cost of the entire thing. He was very honest and upfront about the time that it would take for everything to get done since it was the middle of summer and their peak time for business. I was a little apprehensive when he said it would take 4-5 weeks just to begin scheduling us but it was well worth the wait! They finally scheduled us at the end of August (which was necessary as the HOA would have charged us a fee for the condition the porch was in by Sept. 1) and it took them three days. They handled all the county permitting, the miss utility calls, etc. It was a good price for what I got out of it and the way the porch looks now even though what we said was for an exact replica of the last one-- it's even better than the old one. The overhang is bigger which is nice on rainy days to have more cover! Anyway, I LOVE LOVE the porch! Also the workers were very nice and courteous and they left the steps and lvery clean when they were done! read more

REVISED REVIEW: SEE UPDATE AT BOTTOM We hired Sunburst construction in the summer of 2016 for two major tasks: 1) rebuild our 2-story, 2-tier deck which was falling apart and 2) replace the two back doors (one a 3 glass pane and one a slider). First, the deck job was fantastic. How they approached it was amazing, and we couldn't be happier with the outcome. They weren't the cheapest, but they certainly weren't the most expensive. The price point for outcome is very acceptable. If a deck is what you want, go with these folks. I highly recommend Sunburst for decks. BUT. Here is the reason for our ONE STAR review: the door job was a complete failure on so many counts. The doors were installed improperly and have caused damage as a result. 1. They did not wrap the exterior door frames as we agreed. Instead, they left exposed wood with a poor coat of paint that came off with power washing. This is, unfortunately, minor compared to the rest. 2. Basement French door install failure. When they went to install the sliding glass door replacement with the new double French door, they discovered that they ordered the wrong door (after the PM had come out and remeasured to verify the sales guy's measurements). So they measured twice and still failed. By the time they made this discovery, they had already taken out the old door, and it was so rotted that it fell apart. In other words, they didn't measure the newly delivered door before taking out the old door, so now we had a hole in our house and no door to fit. What was their solution? They took a saw to our concrete basement wall and CUT our basement wall to make the wrong door fit. But it still wouldn't fit properly (couldn't open the door over the carpet) because they ... measured wrong again. AFTER they cut our basement wall. So they had to go get a new door and then REBUILD a larger frame out of wood to make the second new door fit because it was too small for the hole. They still couldn't measure! 3. Family room French door w/ side lights install failure. After the fiasco with the basement door, I asked if they had checked the measurement of the family room door to make sure the same issue did not occur. They said they did, and it was okay. And yet. They pulled out the old door and amazingly, the new door DID NOT FIT. So they wanted to do the same thing: cut my house. I said absolutely not. No more saws. So they had to go get a different door. And it seemed okay at first, but when it got cold in the fall, we noticed that the room was super cold. We had difficulty even with our gas logs heating the room to a level of comfort in the winter. Upon close examination, I discovered a not so insignificant crack at the bottom where the doors do not seal entirely. Unfortunately, that's not the end of it. This year as the temperatures warmed, we noticed that the house was very humid. It was 70% at one point! I wasn't fully sure the new doors were to blame for the humidity problem. We examined other options (HVAC inspection and duct sealing), but none fixed the problem. Today, we power washed the basement wall. The brand new door leaked from the TOP of the door with water pouring in and soaking the brand new carpet we installed after they replaced the doors. One would have thought that replacing 33 year old doors with new fiberglass doors would have improved home climate control efficiency, but alas, not when installed improperly. This is a total fiasco. I've filed a warranty claim. We shall see what happens. UPDATE: After inspection of the installed doors, Sunburst accepted our warranty claim and, at their own cost, sent out an independent contractor to fix the doors. While this shouldn't have happened in the first place, problems do happen, and the mark of a good company is how they address the problems as they arise. I also want to reiterate that their work on the deck was first rate. We are still very happy with it. Given that they addressed our install problems, I am elevating the overall rating to 3 stars. read more

This is the second deck I've built here in Loudoun County. I went with Sunburst because over the years, it became apparent that the decks of my friends who used Sunburst still look good after 10 years, whereas my first deck and some others... not so much so. From the time I was first contacted until completion, it was about as easy as it can be. My Rep, who goes by "B", was not only easy to work with, but he was an absolute pleasure and even made the process fun. He was extremely responsive even off business hours, which was important for me since I work long hours. He was very clear and transparent about the entire process as well (not to mention that his design suggestions were terrific). My deck is absolutely beautiful, and the workmanship is top-notch. I have actually had several neighbors and friends ask me specifically who did my deck because it looks that good (and I'm not bragging). So thank you, Sunburst and especially, B! read more

Chad can be nice to work with but also has moments of not communicating well. Taking over a week to write/call back, not taking notes about what you want and have agreed upon and then forgetting about conversations later for instance. For me he was much nicer prior to me signing the contract and kinda changed afterwards and at times got short with me. He did not push me into anything, made great recommendations, was very responsive both by phone, text and email, and had good ideas. From a price perspective, their quote was competitive. However, their reputation made me select Sunburst; and was pleased that I did. The actual project work was performed by very competent and friendly staff. I worked with a very good project manager (Corey) who went above and beyond to make sure that the job was done to my satisfaction. The quality and workmanship was excellent.
