I stood at the counter waiting to be acknowledged until he finally looked up at me. I said, "Hi, I have some packages to return," and he told me, "You can leave them on the counter." When I asked for a receipt, he looked at me and said, "For all of them?" I replied, "Yes," and he proceeded to scan the packages. After he finished, I thanked him and told him I appreciated it. He handed me the receipt, immediately continued his phone conversation, and never said anything else to me. The packages were processed correctly, but the entire interaction felt like I was inconveniencing him. There was no greeting, no acknowledgment, and no basic customer service beyond what was absolutely necessary to complete the transaction. I don't expect a lengthy conversation, but I do expect a level of professionalism that makes customers feel welcome rather than like an interruption.
