After the plastic connection broke and brussels broke off, I took it in and spoke to the staff there; who are always very professional and friendly. I explained that I rarely used the brush and that it broke prematurely after less than one season. She, the employee, explained that I should wash off the brush after each use because they don't normally do well with chlorine and sun and that could have caused the premature breakage. huh? Since I'm a regular customer and have spent A LOT of money there, I thought she might have had a better suggestion like that she'd contact the manufacturer or some other outcome rather than an explanation that the pool brush doesn't mix well with chlorine and sun. Nonetheless, I professionally thanked them and left. It's the little things that make a huge difference sometimes. Be aware not to purchase a brush with a plastic connection, plastic bristles or it will break and be sure to wash off your pool brush after each use. read more

I purchased an above ground pool for the family to enjoy,not realizing it was the beginning of a nightmare. After setting up about a week into my son would get out of the pool and he would be covered in a rash. Finding out he was having an allergic reaction to clorine. Getting bits to chance this pool to a salt water system I was at my wits end ready to drain the darn thing and then I walked into academy pools! After talking with the gentalman for 3 mins he already figured out what's going on and recommended me a new product that will soften the water and help. It did !!!!! My family and I were headed to LAX on vacation, and one of the things I forgotten to do was to get our pool water tested and any treatments needed while we were gone for 8 days. As with all vacation planning, there were lots of things to do on the last day. I dropped the dog off at the sitter's house and realized I had not done anything for the pool. I checked online and saw they closed at 5 o'clock and I was way up at the 91/60 interchange. It was about 4:45. I knew there was no way I could make it there in time, so I called them and told them the situation, and they said absolutely no problem they would stay open for me. I ended up getting there at about 5:02, and got done exactly what I needed to. Big thanks to Academy Pool! They've always done a stellar job for us with no BS. I can't recommend them enough! Steve is the Man! I've yet to bring a problem to him that he does not have a solution for. Replaced the pool pump last year -- Excellent price and superb after the sale service. He stands behind what he sells so no worries. Just replaced the filter on this 40 year old pool and wow! pools is so clean it sparkles. Again Steve and the installer (Pool Guru Mike) provided excellent service. NOW - I need heater and again Steve is coming through with the correct size and price I need. Thanks Academy Pools. PS - One reason his muratic acid costs more than HD is because the acid strength is is more than the weak stuff HD offers. I needed a specific light bulb and gasket to change out my pool light. I went to a different store, but they didn't have what I needed. I want to send out a positive post about a great experience I had with Academy Pool and Spa Supplies on Van Buren. They have always been great but this is beyond special. My pool was losing water daily about 100 gallons. I had no idea what the problem was. I called Mike Pazmino at Academy. He came out and after looking it over it was determined that my skimmer had separated from the pool wall and that was the problem. Water was literally draining out daily. He and his brother Angelo were incredible. They sawed off the deck covering the skimmer, replaced the unit, and replaced the deck surrounding it. It took 4 days of hard work. After that, they went through my system and made some upgrades to the plumbing at my equipment. I can't thank them enough for all they did. Way beyond my expectations. BTW their brother Darin is my weekly pool guy. My pool has never looked this good. read more

I am a newbie when it comes to pools. So, I knew that I needed a thru wall filter for my above ground pool but was unable to locate one. I posted yesterday on their other yelp page. Not sure why there is two but this one seems like the main page. This is the only pool store I will go to. Steve, the owner is extremely knowledgeable and the rest of the staff are very helpful and friendly. I was having an issue with my filter and needed a new one and I checked around a few places and on Amazon and It was much less expensive here. Furthermore, they ordered the part for me without me even having to pay for it until I picked it up. I love that I can just take a pool sample in anytime and they will let me know what I need. My family has been going to Academy for all our pool needs for over 10 years. Steve and the workers in the shop are very nice, friendly, and helpful. They really listen to your problems as far as pool needs. They provide you with exact steps that you need in order to get your pool back to crystal clear water. I would have given 5 stars just based on that. However I brought it down because of their pool guy Mike. He's unprofessional and will make appointments at his convenience and not the customers. When he does make appointments it's open ended and no spefic times. So be ready to wait around the pool all day. When he finally came he fixed the motor and added piping but did a poor job at it because it is leaking. So we had to reschedule again. Again waiting around to fix something that should have been done correctly the first time. read more
