"Winding your way down on Baker Street Light in your head and dead on your feet" (Gerry Rafferty) We've walked down streets leading to lots of bakers - Jewish bakers, Polish bakers, Italian bakers. Well today we added one more ethnic baker to our list of life experiences. Aby's Bakery has some of the sweetest Argentinian cookies and pastries you will ever have. When you walk in, you'll see two showcases with baked goods. The one on the right contains fruit tarts, pies, and cookies. We saw a lot of super cute, iced cookies with animal designs like bumble bees and whales. No doubt your kids will shriek with joy when they see these! The left showcase has turnovers, croissants, and small chocolate cookies known as Alfajores. Think of them as the love child of a Malomar and a Chocolate Frosted Oreo. They have a dulce de leche layer of frosting between two cookies and the whole thing is smothered in chocolate! How good do you think that tasted? They also sell sandwiches and empanadas, so you can buy a delicious lunch with dessert here. And I haven't even mentioned their prices yet! We bought seven items and didn't even crack $12. Our four Alfajores were fantastic. We also bought a croissant and two empanadas - a chicken and a beef. The croissant was more like a roll than a layered "French style" croissant, but it was super fresh and delicious. It had a slight sweet glaze on it, so it can also fit the bill as a dessert or something to munch on with a coffee or tea. We had the Empanadas as an appetizer tonight. They were small in size but big in taste. The pastry was soft and flaky and the two meat fillings were tender and flavorful. Neither was spicy, so they will likely appeal to any palate in your household. Bottom line is that we loved everything about Aby's - from the charming lady that served us to their fantastic food to their excellent pricing. PRO TIP Don't fret if you can't find a place to park in the street or in their small lot. There are plenty of spots in a lot behind the store. read more

Friendly staff but not a big offering of fresh baked goods. Alot of the items bought such as cookies and custard cones were not fresh. Appears to be made in bulk and stored until sold. My husband is Argentine, so naturally we had to stop at Aby's Bakery! We got the beef empanada, chicken empanada, and two alfajores. Everything was freshly made and so authentic. I'd love to return to get their breads, sweets, and more empanadas, of course. Aby chatted with us for a bit and she is sweet and hard-working. Just don't expect to be in and out because it's slow, since it's all made from scratch if you're eating in rather than taking out. What a super fun experience! I had come in looking for alfajores after hearing about them for the first time last week. Of course, I needed to know! Aby's is the best little Argentinian bakery around. I got to meet the owner Celia while I was there and she was so great explaining everything to me and even writing the name of the pastry I bought so I wouldn't forget. Milhojas! Turns out they were out of the alfajores, but had something similar- the milhojas. Here's the breakdown- Alfajores are filled with dulce de leche (which is rather caramel-like) and rolled in coconut. The cookie itself is extremely soft and tender. Milhojas, translates to "thousand sheets", are made with stacked layers of puff pastry, filled with dulce de leche. The fillings are the same, but the outer layers are different. I tried the milhojas and it was so good! I can't wait to go back and try the alfajores. They also have really cute cookies, breads and churros. Just can't beat this gem in West Hartford. Calling ahead next time to check for the alfajores. I hope Celia is there. This place is THE BOMB of Farmington Avenue. If I could give this place 6 stars I would. If you drop by before the afternoon on weekends, you can get their famous Argentinian Churros fresh from the deep fry. Crispy in the outside and soft on the inside, I would recommend this to anyone! Even if you get it cold, it's still yummy! They also have these little animal and whatever's relevant at the time shaped cookies that are to die for, not to mention their Mil Hojas as well. This cute little bakery offers tasty treats. I used to walk by them daily and would stop by on the weekends with my kids to pick up some churros. So delicious if you can get them in the morning hours. The folks who run this bakery are also very nice and generous especially to the little ones. They make the best decorative holiday sugar cookies too for most all holidays. I also enjoy their Mil Hojas. I was skeptical at first because it's so small, but the woman running the shop was so sweet and the bakery itself had a decent assortment. I tried an apple-and-almond-cream mini pie (tart?), and a lemon mini pie. Delicious! They were baked perfectly for reheating at home, in an oven at 350 for about 10 minutes. 1.) Just to warm you up: This place had me at Argentina. Ah the memories I had. Top quality meat, sophisticated wines, and gorgeous women (which, apparently, this country pays one of the highest per capita in plastic surgery, or at least when I was there). The peso is nothing compared to the dollar, so you live like a king or queen, ordering an appetizer, entree, dessert and alcoholic drink for about $10 bucks of the most quality food. Home of the machismo - men super aggressively hitting on women, and transvestites. The times of just living wild and not giving a f&$%. Ah, welcome to Argentina. *record scratches* Oops. I veered off the track of this review. *straightens tie on suit, and resumes playing music on the record* I always use to eye this place. As a matter of fact, I have eyed this place for about 5 years, and I always wanted to come here. Why didn't I? Well today I did, and now I am a believer. 2.) What your eyes may see: Kind of a small area for sitting in and eating stuff there. The area behind the counter, where they make the food, seems pretty long, with a lot of heavy duty baking machinery. At the front counter displays all the wonderful pastries. They also sell a few things like Dulce De Leche, box of cookies and a few other things. After looking a the pictures I took, they also have a small fridge, which is on the floor, behind the counter that serves Coconut Water, soda and other soft drinks. 3.) Food: They make empanadillas, which since I am latino I know what they are, but to describe what an empanada or empanadILLA ("ILLA" means smaller version) it reminds me of a Jamaican Beef patty. Same difference. But obviously they add a little spin on seasoning and how they may cut the meat into it. But it's the same flakey, breaded idead. But this place displays more pastries than anything. I was introduced to the "Alfajor." If you look at the pictures I uploaded, the Alfajor is a butter cookie with Dulce de Leche in between, covered with Dutch Milk Chocolate. Crispy cookie, creamy dulce de leche, tasty Dutch Milk Chocolate. Yum, Yum, Yum, Yum, Yum, Yum, Yum, Yum, Yum. (sung in the "Men Men Men Men Men Men Men Men Men" jingle from the show 2 and a half men). 4.) Service: The young guy told me he was surprised no one on Yelp talked much about this place. I dunno. I recently went on a business trip to Uruguay and discovered the heaven known as alfajor cookies. I brought a box home with me "for the kids" but they disappeared very quickly. Since then I've daydreamed about having them again. I googled where I could find them in CT and Aby's was the only result I found, so I headed out specifically to get some. It's important to note that the ones I had in Uruguay had a MUCH different texture than the ones at Aby's. The ones I had previously were soft and cake-like, reminiscent of a moonpie. Aby's are crunchy, a little crumbly, more lie a shortbread cookie. I've read that is the typical alfajor so I'm not entirely sure what type I had. At first I was disappointed since I loved the other ones SO much. But once I got used to the difference in texture, I was sold. They are amazing. The chocolate coating is the perfect thickness, there is a great balance of cookie to dulce de leche. Truly enjoyable. They also had a wide assortment of fun-shaped cookies (elephants, bears, giraffes). I haven't tasted them yet but got a couple for my kids and they are adorable. Stopped in while shopping at Cosmo's. I didn't even know this bakery existed! The lady at the counter (was it Aby?) was very nice and patiently explained what some of the delicious looking items in the cases were. I decided to go traditional and got a palmier and a large vanilla cupcake. Both were tasty and well-prepared. Not the best ever but some solid tasty baked goods. Looking at the Yelp reviews now, it looks like I missed out on the alfajores, but I will definitely be back to try them. I love the old-school feel of this small unassuming bakery. This place is good. I didn't try everything by a long-shot, but what I had I liked. I will probably give it more stars when I go back to try additional stuff. It's a small place, easily passed by on Farmington Avenue, but do stop in. The lady behind the counter is nice and friendly and the stuff is made right there. I had a churro, which is like a fried dough stick or a cruller doughnut. It's denser than fried dough and drier than a cruller, but it's delish. It came dusted with a little granular sugar. I also tried a little, round chocolate covered pastry that I can't remember the name of, but it's bottom of the pastry case on the left. I can only describe it as a dulce de leche scooter pie. Talk about good! Aby's has fruit tarts and other familiar offerings too. They also have some sandwiches and coffee. A sign indicated you can buy cold-cuts by the pound, but I can't see a real need for that. I guess if they're making sandwiches, they might as well. So stay tuned. WOW. The churros here are just decadent. My boyfriend brought some home a few days ago (he went to Aby's bright & early because they normally sell out by 8:30) and, as much as I hate to admit, I ate three in one sitting. Tasty fried dough coated with cinnamon & sugar - moist and light on the inside with a crispy exterior...it doesn't get much better than that. While the bakery isn't much to look at (I've been in about 5 times), the baked goods are pretty stellar - still a solid 4 stars overall. Next stop - chocolate empanadas! read more

An absolute gem. I must have passed this a thousand times and never given it a second thought. Big mistake. The alfajors distinguish it from other bakeries in the area, hands down. They are the size and height of marshmallows and dynamic in flavor, fresh, and extremely satisfying. I ate three small ones on my ride home and went back for more. I visited the bakery today and ordered a vanilla cupcake with rainbow shots. I'd read other reviews of this place and they were outstanding, it's a short trip from my job so I decided to give them a go on my quest for Hartford/Greater Hartford's best bakery. I have to say this was just okay for me. Although the place is clean and the people are friendly, the cupcake was just ok, the cake part was pretty good, the frosting, not really all that tasty and had a store-bought flavor. However it was huge and reasonably priced. If I indulge in treats I like to go to do a gruesome workout afterwards to pay for it, but I really like when working out a little harder on any given day was worth it. This treat? Not worth it. I wanted to venture out from the standard cupcake but nothing else really seemed that appetizing, I guess this could be blamed on the basic presentation and standard office building-style lighting? I haven't written this place off because cupcakes are not what makes or breaks them as I hear their chocolate empenadas are really good. I'll report back once I give them a try. read more

Wish I knew about this place long ago. Pastries really remind me of BA. The best part for my significant other and me is the empanadas since the version from Argentina is baked in a beautiful dough, not fried. They make them Tuesday to Thursday without fail, and Friday and Saturday by request. Beef are the default, and chicken is by request (must order 12 or more). Aby was kind enough to take my telephone number so if another customer orders some chicken she will make some extra for me. Also she will sell the discs of dough if you want to put your own filling in them and bake them at home. Just to be complete, other aspects include convenient parking, clean and tidy space, and good service. Did not find out about toilets. You cannot go wrong here. My husband ordered my birthday cake from Aby's, and it was one of the best bakery cakes I've ever had. The chocolate cake was moist, not too dense, and not too sweet. The chocolate buttercream was light and airy. The two components really balanced and complemented each other (I hate cakes that are overly sweet and sugary with no flavor). I just had the last slice tonight (six days later!) and the cake was still good. So delicious, I highly recommend. Added bonus this is a small business! I just found Aby's two weeks ago. What a pleasant surprise. When you first walk in you go through a screen door. That's how I remember the bakeries fifty years ago. Unlike a big box store this bakery has real atmosphere from the old school ceilings to the Un commercialised tv free music free sitting area. This s a throw back to old school west Hartford before the big money came to town and it was a simpler time. The artistry in the display cases and each pastry I've tried is delicious. Have not bought more than pastry but if pastry is the business card of a culinary artist then this is a bakery whose selections I look forward to experience more of! read more

I went to Jimmies Pizza Restaurant on Farmington Avenue and after my meal, I wanted a coffee and something sweet to eat! I was thinking Dunkin Donuts but as I walked out of Jimmies I saw Aby's Bakery right next door! So I went in to try the place! I was sure glad I did! I got a fresh cup of coffee and a cream cheese turnover! Mmmmmmm Sooooo GOOD together! It was SO GOOD that I then went back up for another cup of coffee and two cupcakes! Ohhhhhhhh they were the BEST that I ever had! Before leaving Aby's I just had to get two more cupcakes to go! Everything is made FRESH and they have some Delicious sandwiches on their menu also!
