My favorite bakery. Order a fruit cake for a special birthday treat or another favorite of mine spinach pie.

While the pastries are classic and exactly what you'd expect from a high-caliber Italian bakery, the real gem is the Italian ice located in the cafe. Good lord, the flavors and quality are on a different level--this isn't that Rita's or DQ garbage. The chocolate and strawberry combination is specifically incredible, honestly better than Godiva chocolate-covered strawberries. It provides that deep, rich profile and authentic taste that defines their Itallian vibe. One professional tip for anyone stopping by: bring cash. The cafe doesn't accept cards, and you don't want to be the one standing there empty-handed when you're that close to the best Italian ice on the planet

I think we were being greedy and ordered the pizza bread, stuffed croissant and carrot cake. The pizza bread, the cake and stuffed croissant was bomb! Good but basic coffee and matcha…read more Came here on the hunt for coffee spots. Generally don't like going into Hartford, but figured it was early enough to avoid the major crowds and traffic. When I first got here, the barista was not ready to take orders yet, so I sat down while they prepped for the day. After about 15 minutes they were ready, so I ordered a basic latte and sat back down. The coffee bar has no food and only coffee and matcha drinks, relying on other businesses to fill that gap when they don't offer food at the primary location. The hours on Saturday don't match up with the other local businesses, so it leads to the ability to get coffee but not food till at least an hours time from open. The latte was basic, coffee is of a decent quality and the milk was frothy. No real design work beyond a basic onion off-center. They had one special latte, a pb&j inspired iced latte. Opted against, since they were still prepping for those orders when I went to order. It's functional coffee for the area. Not bad but not special either. It's a place to get a cup of joe on Pratt street, and it's good coffee but nothing to call home about.

I heard about The Bop Coffee Shop this week. I learned from a Yelp Connecticut reel on Instagram…read morethat the Hartford Mayor referred to Hartford as the Coffee Capital of CT. I found this claim surprising, because although I have lived in the Hartford area for over 25 years, I know many more quality coffee shops in New Haven than in Hartford. A quick Yelp search later, and I became aware of the Bop. I visited this weekend. The Bop is located on Pratt Street, which is Hartford's cool red brick street that is blocked off downtown. There are outside tables where you can sit. As I walked the length of Pratt Street from Main to Trumbull, I didn't see The Bop at first. It's closer to Trumbull Street on the left. I was a bit confused, because I saw a small sign for The Bop up high, and a larger "Refugee Tattoo" across the top of the store front. I entered and saw a kiosk where they were making and selling coffee, a bit of seating, art, and some nice people hanging out who seemed like they were associated with the tattoo business. I wasn't sure if this was primarily a lobby for the tattoo shop with a small coffee area, or if it's all the coffee shop and you walk through to get to the tattoo shop. I think it's more the latter than the former, but it doesn't really matter. It was a cool space with welcoming people. I understand that The Bop is a small batch roaster and they have a roasting facility on New Park Ave in Hartford. They make coffee from the beans they roast. They had both a cold brew option and an iced coffee option, which is important to me. I ordered a black iced coffee. They were using medium roast Dominican beans. The person who helped me knew that information when I asked, which isn't always the case at coffee shops. The coffee was very good. Smooth. Had a nice mild acidity. Better than the iced coffee you get at most Hartford County coffee places. I would definitely return, although I found it difficult to find nearby cheap parking since Pratt Street is closed off. So for me, The Bop is more of an "I'm already downtown coffee shop" than a "destination coffee shop". 4.5 Stars

I have had a few of the same items at both locations and have found the ones from Gastropark to be slightly below Avon's standard. The banana bread is a favorite, as well as the chocolate chip cookies. I have liked certain flavors of muffins, but generally I find them dry, as well as smaller and more expensive than competitors'. Admittedly, I'm a muffin fanatic and have a very high standard. The almond croissant is good, but can run a bit greasy/heavy for my taste. Another star, though, would be their breakfast sandwich on their own focaccia. Their breads are consistently top tier, and the fluffy eggs and accoutrements are perfectly proportioned and well prepared. I like the blueberry scones as well. Tremendous flake and texture. Very blueberry forward. Their prices are on the high side, except for a few exceptions like the cookies. I know they use extremely high quality ingredients, so they are surely justified, but there are many places around where I can get pastries that I personally prefer for less. Everyone is always very nice there, usually pretty quiet and transactional, but no complaints in that department. They make it a point to be a safe space for all. I don't feel as comfortable hanging in an open food hall type space like that of Gastropark, so I generally take my baked goods to go (or just go to the Avon location, which again, I prefer), but that's a matter of personal preference. There is plenty of space to eat there, and many other people love it. Not a knock. So with all of that said, I think 4 stars is fair. Avon gets a 5, so I would recommend you visit that location whenever possible. But, I do like this one enough to stop on occasion. They are a great business you should definitely support.
