First time I tried Modern Pastry was in the Boston location. The Lobster Tail pastry are huge! It literally took three days to finish it, sharing it as well! I wish they could find a way to ship to California! We were staying in New Jersey and seen this location was close enough to take a nice 2+ hour drive to get some pastry! I called ahead to secure my lobster tails and they had 3 different flavors so of course I had to try them all to make my trip worthwhile. The Pistachio was my favorite! The lady happily took my order and I didn't even have to prepay for my order. I'm sure glad I called it in. When I arrived another lady bought up the rest in the case, mine were boxed up ready to go! Very friendly staff let us use the facilities as we had been on the road for a while. Everything was clean and smelled amazing!

Zepppole time! Some years I miss finding this treat but this year was super successful. We sat at the coffee bar and devoured one each with a cup of Cappuccino. Our coffee was made right in front of us as we waited for the zeppole to be filled with whipped ricotta. What a delicious was to enjoy a sunny day in Hartford in a true Italian setting. The Easter breads looked amazing.

Modern Pastry is great! the staff is kind, efficient & patient. they did my wedding cake & i could not have been more happy with it. Carla was amazing & worked so patiently with me when it came to brainstorming ideas around what i wanted for my cake, making suggestions & working around accommodating to my wishes as best as possible. i was able to choose from a sample of a few different flavors before making a final decision, which was nice. The pricing was explained to me thoroughly & was very fair in my opinion. All in all, not only was the cake BEAUTIFUL, but it tasted as good as it looked!

Cakes . . . In the window

I hadn't been to Modern in a while and decided to visit. They have beautiful cakes displayed in the windows and I suspect they have a very good cake order business. I'm not sure if this is because of the pandemic and perhaps fewer walk in customers, but they have fewer cookies, pastries, etc. in their glass case than I remember. While I was there, they were doing a moderately steady business on a Saturday morning. I ordered a box of assorted Italian cookies and a few cannolis. I had a bit of my wife's chocolate filled cannoli with chocolate chips. Delicious. It was maybe a touch better than my ricotta cannoli with chopped nuts and a cherry, but that was still very good. The cookies were fairly typical for a good Italian bakery, although there were fewer options than some bakeries. The service was very friendly and efficient. Although Modern is not a go to bakery for me, it will continue as a nice change of pace option.

Modern is one of the best places in Connecticut. My partner has a tradition of having zeppoles on Saint Joseph's Day! The best place to get them? At Modern, duh! We got 2 chocolate and 2 vanillas. Both flavors are delicious, but I prefer the chocolate more. They do NOT skimp on the filling. It was a bit busy, but the service was super quick, and the line went by fast! Highly recommend to everyone!

This review is on the service and the chocolate mousse cake at Modern Pastry. I called in very last minute for a small birthday cake to celebrate my birthday and the folks at Modern were very accommodating. I didn't get a super intricate custom order but they were able to have a cake within three hours with writing, same day. Also, having a slice of the cake today and it's absolutely delicious. The cake itself is moist and the chocolate mousse is light and decadent. Not all bakeries can make good cake but this was wonderful. Contrary to another review I read, this did not taste like a store bought supermarket cake at all. Highly recommend.

Small Cookie Platter! I wasn't able to take anymore as they were opened a second after I placed them on the table :)

I ordered a small cookie platter for the holidays and wish I ordered a larger one!! They were absolutely delicious and SO fresh! I placed my order less than a week before Christmas and the young girl who helped me place the order [over the phone] was very nice.

Goodness it has been so many years since I visited this bakery in the heart of Hartford's Little Italy. I had forgotten just how good these folks are. I ordered a slice of Porchetta, a Zeppole and a Pastacotti. In order of preference after having tasted all three: 1) Pastacotti 2) Zeppole 3) Porchetta. All three individually would ring anybodies bell but the nuanced flavors, complexity and sheer delight of the Pastacotti was almost other worldly. I had stopped at another Franklin Ave bakery just prior but found nothing of significant interest. After stepping foot in Modern it was altogether different, it was warm, inviting and exudes old world bakery charm. The counter employees all seem to have a connection with the bakery that you can't manufacture, make up or put on. Modern Pastry is just plain comfortable and the perfect place to visit for fine Italian pastries on a Sunday afternoon.

I am a fan of Modern Pastry Shop and have recommended to several friends of mine who wants to order a specialty cake for a birthday or a shower or even a casual gathering; they make great cakes. The good thing about Modern Pastry is that they accept your design for a custom cake order and they also give you suggestions towards your customization. Definitely a fan when it comes to they custom cakes, the variety of flavors and choices for filling they have are good. When it comes to picking up a few slices of pastries, their options are limited in the store. But nevertheless, you will not be disappointed.

Cannoli is one thing you need to try here. They dont keep it in the display. Once you order, they will make it fresh. It makes sense. Else the shell will get damp and soggy. I also tried many cookies from here. One especially caught my attention. There was a chocolate, kind of spherical shaped cookie, which taste like rum cake. That was my favorite cookie. Sfogliatella was very good as well.

Another beautiful cake by modern pastry! It wasn't too sweet just how we like it. We had white cake with chocolate cream and strawberry cream. It was incredibly moist and delicious. My children loved the sea shell candies on the side and the frosting was absolutely delectable. Highly recommend to anyone looking for tasty beautiful custom cakes!

I got married at the Bahamas. I then celebrated back home. I went to Modern Bakery for a specific cake and they made my wedding cake and it looked exactly how I wanted it. It was not only perfect but delicious! I found my permanent go-to bakery!!! Thank you. Mrs. Casablanca

Great desserts. Did my wedding cake. Simple and refined, not showy. Very classic south end Italian. Get a cappuccino and a pastry.

While the pastries are classic and exactly what you'd expect from a high-caliber Italian bakery, the real gem is the Italian ice located in the cafe. Good lord, the flavors and quality are on a different level--this isn't that Rita's or DQ garbage. The chocolate and strawberry combination is specifically incredible, honestly better than Godiva chocolate-covered strawberries. It provides that deep, rich profile and authentic taste that defines their Itallian vibe. One professional tip for anyone stopping by: bring cash. The cafe doesn't accept cards, and you don't want to be the one standing there empty-handed when you're that close to the best Italian ice on the planet

Good but basic coffee and matcha…read more Came here on the hunt for coffee spots. Generally don't like going into Hartford, but figured it was early enough to avoid the major crowds and traffic. When I first got here, the barista was not ready to take orders yet, so I sat down while they prepped for the day. After about 15 minutes they were ready, so I ordered a basic latte and sat back down. The coffee bar has no food and only coffee and matcha drinks, relying on other businesses to fill that gap when they don't offer food at the primary location. The hours on Saturday don't match up with the other local businesses, so it leads to the ability to get coffee but not food till at least an hours time from open. The latte was basic, coffee is of a decent quality and the milk was frothy. No real design work beyond a basic onion off-center. They had one special latte, a pb&j inspired iced latte. Opted against, since they were still prepping for those orders when I went to order. It's functional coffee for the area. Not bad but not special either. It's a place to get a cup of joe on Pratt street, and it's good coffee but nothing to call home about.

I heard about The Bop Coffee Shop this week. I learned from a Yelp Connecticut reel on Instagram…read morethat the Hartford Mayor referred to Hartford as the Coffee Capital of CT. I found this claim surprising, because although I have lived in the Hartford area for over 25 years, I know many more quality coffee shops in New Haven than in Hartford. A quick Yelp search later, and I became aware of the Bop. I visited this weekend. The Bop is located on Pratt Street, which is Hartford's cool red brick street that is blocked off downtown. There are outside tables where you can sit. As I walked the length of Pratt Street from Main to Trumbull, I didn't see The Bop at first. It's closer to Trumbull Street on the left. I was a bit confused, because I saw a small sign for The Bop up high, and a larger "Refugee Tattoo" across the top of the store front. I entered and saw a kiosk where they were making and selling coffee, a bit of seating, art, and some nice people hanging out who seemed like they were associated with the tattoo business. I wasn't sure if this was primarily a lobby for the tattoo shop with a small coffee area, or if it's all the coffee shop and you walk through to get to the tattoo shop. I think it's more the latter than the former, but it doesn't really matter. It was a cool space with welcoming people. I understand that The Bop is a small batch roaster and they have a roasting facility on New Park Ave in Hartford. They make coffee from the beans they roast. They had both a cold brew option and an iced coffee option, which is important to me. I ordered a black iced coffee. They were using medium roast Dominican beans. The person who helped me knew that information when I asked, which isn't always the case at coffee shops. The coffee was very good. Smooth. Had a nice mild acidity. Better than the iced coffee you get at most Hartford County coffee places. I would definitely return, although I found it difficult to find nearby cheap parking since Pratt Street is closed off. So for me, The Bop is more of an "I'm already downtown coffee shop" than a "destination coffee shop". 4.5 Stars

I have had a few of the same items at both locations and have found the ones from Gastropark to be slightly below Avon's standard. The banana bread is a favorite, as well as the chocolate chip cookies. I have liked certain flavors of muffins, but generally I find them dry, as well as smaller and more expensive than competitors'. Admittedly, I'm a muffin fanatic and have a very high standard. The almond croissant is good, but can run a bit greasy/heavy for my taste. Another star, though, would be their breakfast sandwich on their own focaccia. Their breads are consistently top tier, and the fluffy eggs and accoutrements are perfectly proportioned and well prepared. I like the blueberry scones as well. Tremendous flake and texture. Very blueberry forward. Their prices are on the high side, except for a few exceptions like the cookies. I know they use extremely high quality ingredients, so they are surely justified, but there are many places around where I can get pastries that I personally prefer for less. Everyone is always very nice there, usually pretty quiet and transactional, but no complaints in that department. They make it a point to be a safe space for all. I don't feel as comfortable hanging in an open food hall type space like that of Gastropark, so I generally take my baked goods to go (or just go to the Avon location, which again, I prefer), but that's a matter of personal preference. There is plenty of space to eat there, and many other people love it. Not a knock. So with all of that said, I think 4 stars is fair. Avon gets a 5, so I would recommend you visit that location whenever possible. But, I do like this one enough to stop on occasion. They are a great business you should definitely support.
