This was honestly the best experience I've ever had with a mobile mechanic. Grant was prompt, realistic, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. I snapped a bolt off on my water pump when I was replacing it over the weekend. He was able to remove the broken bolt with zero damage to the housing. We were on our way from Lake Tahoe to the Bay Area on Sunday night and our Mercedes ML 320 developed problems that later was traced to a broken serpentine belt. This is the easiest and most stress free way I have ever dealt with car troubles! My car broke down as I was leaving camp and I was about 200 miles from my home, way too far for AAA to tow me. I went to yelp and Above Auburn was the first number that popped up, Grant answered immediately and I explained my situation. He told me he could drive to me (crazy!! has any automotive repair EVER done that??) but I was on the side of the freeway, and AAA was already there so I said I would be towed to him. Grant is quickly becoming my go-to for all things automotive. He's the guy who can look/listen and quickly identify potential issues with incredible accuracy before he even gets his tools out. This ability saves a lot of money on labor. His track record with me is outstanding. And I will say he truly saved my butt with my latest vehicle purchase. He's on time, friendly, respectful and all about getting it done. He is incredibly straight forward and blunt and doesn't pull any punches when telling you his opinion, what he's seeing and the issues that need addressing. It's refreshing because you know exactly where you stand without question or confusion. I am currently planning to ditch my current mechanic and use Grant exclusively. History: 1-A couple of years ago he brought an abused, barely running, old mail truck I had bought (jeep cj engine-frame) back to life in one afternoon after another shop told me it would take a few days and quite a bit of money. It's still humming along with no issues. The truck was going to be used as an event vehicle. (see photos) 2-Woke up one morning to find my '02 Silverado 2500HD 4x4 had a serious coolant puddle underneath it. My normal mechanic gave me a laundry list of what could have happened and quoted me a fee just to diagnose. This would also require figuring out how to get the truck to their shop and still get to work. As I was on my way to work in my other car I asked Grant via text to check it out at my home while I wasn't there. He refused to guess diagnose without seeing it first so he sent his "guy" Jason within a few hours. Jason, who by the way is equally as competent, immediately found the issue (loose hose), fixed it, tested it and was off within an hour. The following text from Grant, despite my wanting to pay him for his time was... "it was an easy fix... no charge". 3-Present day- Shopping for a new(used) vehicle for my commuter car. I travel from Auburn to Downtown Sac every day. I finally found a car (2010 Honda Accord Couple v6) that was immaculate inside and out but there was a slight ticking in the engine. I didn't think it was too big of a deal but just in case I took a video of the engine idling and sent it to Grant asking what he thought. He immediately responded with "Walk-Away!". Surprised at his response, I hopped on the phone with him and he proceeded to tell me all of the sneaky ways used car guys sell bad vehicles and how they hide issues. Since he couldn't be there to diagnose he proceeded to tell me the possibilities of what could be wrong and they were numerous and some very serious. I was planning on buying the car that day but based on my discussion with Grant I told the dealer that unless he had a Honda dealer diagnose and fix the ticking it was a deal breaker. To their credit the used car dealer did just that at a large expense that they swallowed... they fixed the issue through Honda. After it was "fixed" I asked Grant to come down to Rocklin to give the car a pre-purchase inspection and verify the issue was indeed fixed. He arrived on time and proceeded to search the car top to bottom like a forensic detective. His first comment to me within 5min of investigating was "it's been in a rear collision". Now, I knew that it had been in an accident and how it was repaired, but he didn't know I knew so I asked him what the severity was and how good the repair was. He was spot on with his analysis of what had happened and said it looked like it was repaired professionally and with quality. Nailed it. He then pointed out that it looked as though it had also had some work done to the driver's door... this was not known to me and he pointed out how he knew. Clever. He then went to the engine compartment. He started her up and and said "They fixed it" shaking his head in a positive but surprised motion. Then... "let's take her out"! During the test drive he put the vehicle through the paces in every possible way all the while explaining to me exactly what he was feeling/hearing/seeing and the potential issues I'd need to address for each one. He even caught a few details I didn't notice. After returning and walking around the car he then said... "oh, and it looks like the rear wheels are slightly out of alignment so you'll want to pay attention to tire wear and fix it if necessary. Now understand, I am a pretty decent car guy and notice a lot but that last one I had to really concentrate on to notice, but he was right. He gave the car his stamp of approval based on me being ok with the issues he found and was on his way. I was able to confidently purchase the vehicle with the peace of mind that it had been thoroughly looked over by a pro. He saved me approx $700 for that engine ticking that the dealer took care of.
