Joe deserves all the stars in the world! Ran into an unexpected, sudden car issue one late evening and had to leave town in a couple of days, so granted this was a bit stressful for us. Joe answered my call quickly and provided an estimate, and could be available as early as next day. I was initially a tiny bit worried about some of the reviews I read about scheduling/showing up, but Joe put my worries at ease and communicated with me within a reasonable amount of time and showed up when he said he would. He and his partner were communicative, kind, trustworthy, knowledgeable and skilled at what they do. They worked on our car repair in the pouring rain with no complaints! I had accidentally broken something while working on my Subaru Forester at home and didn't feel comfortable enough as a novice DIY mechanic to do electrical work. Joe was the first one I called and we quickly figured out a time and date for him to stop by my house. He had initially said he'd be here in the morning, but got a little delayed because a previous client's project was more time consuming than expected, which he communicated with me throughout the morning. When he came to the house and wired in a new ignition coil connector, he had it done very quickly and was very friendly. Because of the unexpected delay, he kindly lowered the price of service for the inconvenience which I really appreciated. I paid way less than I had expected, and for that I absolutely recommend him and would gladly use his services again. My car is running again thanks to him! read more

Joe Cobb is truly a gem of a human being, and an exceptionally fine mechanic. He is literally the auto mechanic I've been searching for my entire driving life. Integrity, honesty, speed and deft skill barely scratch the surface of ways I can describe how he approaches his craft. I am from Yuba City, but I live in San Francisco, where the high cost of auto repair (among other things) is daunting. Last fall I went to visit my dad in YC and realized that I could conveniently drop my car off at Les Schwab for new tires that were desperately needed at the time (love Les Schwab too, but that is for another review!). There, they quoted me a significantly lower price for the replacement of my failed tire pressure sensors than my mechanic in the bay area had. They also told me my rear rotors were rusting and that I needed new rear shocks. I didn't want to spend the money at the time, but thought I'd come back when my new tires were due to be rotated and chip away at the work needed as I could. This really got me thinking about things in terms of cost of service in various regions. Since September some other things came up that needed attention on my car, and I was feeling like I couldn't possibly afford to get them all done at once. I knew it would be less costly in Yuba City, and that's when I found Joe on Yelp, or rather Yelp found him for me. After putting in a quote request to another shop in the area, and adding that I would like to receive quotes from other, similarly highly rated businesses, Joe was the first to respond. I had a laundry list of things that needed attention on my 2016 Chevy Volt, and was hoping I could afford to get them all handled at once. At this point I needed the following: Coolant flush (quoted at Folsom Chevrolet for $760) Replacement of both axle washers (quoted at Folsom Chevrolet for $496) Rear rotors (quoted at Les Schwab for $682...this would have been more in SF) Rear shocks (quoted at Les Schwab for $346...this would have been more in SF) Windshield washer pump replacement (quoted at my Sausalito mechanic for $600!) Tire pressure sensors (quoted at my Sausalito mechanic for $150 each, and then at Les Schwab for $136 for TWO) I was looking at somewhere in the range of $3,000, or more, to have all of this work done! Even in Yuba City, I didn't think I could take care of it all in one go, but I decided to get a start on it and make a trip to see my mamma. Joe was amazing. I started talking to him on Tuesday, and we made an appointment for Friday. He'd acquired all the parts, except the sensors, within two days of organizing, and we scheduled an appointment at 9am that Friday. Joe had been great with communication all week, and up to about noon on the repair day. By then he'd told me a couple of times that he was running late, but then he went silent. By 4pm I was pretty sure that my car would not be having any work done on it at all. Though irritated, I knew in my gut that it didn't feel right, because in the few days of conversing via text and phone I could tell he was someone who took his work seriously. I hadn't worked with him before though, so I had my doubts in my ability to discern a person's vibe. Despite the impression that I was being ghosted, I decided to give the situation grace and let go of my irritation after a couple of unanswered texts and leaving a voicemail. Then, at 6pm, when I'd given up hope, he called me from right outside my mom's apartment, saying he wanted to make an apology in person and asked if I would come out. I was deeply moved by his demeanor, humility and integrity, and all doubts were lifted. Joe looked me square in the face and humbly explained to me about his unexpectedly chaotic day. Literally every single one of us has had "one of those days", when circumstances take control. He asked if I would still like him to do the work, and I very much did, thinking ok, he'll come back in the morning. He said he could do that, but he was here now, and ready to do the work, if I would allow it. He had to do the work on the street because my mom's apartment doesn't allow auto repair on the property. Joe, the badass that he is, worked on my car for six hours, in the dark, with nothing but a headlamp! He completed ALL of the work (minus the tire sensors...next time!), and it cost me just $1,200!!! Oh, and I forgot to mention that the windshield wiper pump that my bay area mechanic told me would be $600 turned out to be nothing but a fuse, which Joe easily replaced! My car is running better than ever, and I had the smoothest ride home to San Francisco today. I even got my new, Les Schwab tires rotated before leaving town and they reported that everything looked great with my suspension, and there was nothing that needed attending to. Unfortunately, I have to update my prior review. First, my ATVs he repaired stopped working the following day. And it wasn't cheap either. Joe was supposed to come back to repair them again and do some other repairs. After not hearing from him for a month, I followed up with no reply. Then about a month later I sent multiple texts and he finally replied and said he'd follow up. About a month after that I tried again and told him it had been months and he said he'd try to find some time that week. Now it's been almost another month with no response. I wanted to be fair and give him opportunities to follow up and give some grace because things happen, and I hate doing negative reviews that can affect a business. But after four months of no follow up I have to inform others that after the initial repairs, Joe is not communicative or reliable. I took my car to a mechanic and they were alluding to me needing a new transmission, and Joe came to my house and realized that my connections just needed to be cleaned and he charged me for less than two hours of work, saving me a ton of money. Very disappointed (again). First off I cannot find any license: In California, mobile mechanics, like any business performing automotive repairs, need to register as an Automotive Repair Dealer (ARD) with the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) to operate legally. Second, we were not given a receipt or invoice: mobile mechanics in California, like all auto repair shops, are required to provide customers with a written invoice or receipt detailing the work performed, parts used, and total cost, as mandated by the Automotive Repair Act. Third, in California, mobile mechanics, like all auto repair shops, are required by the California Automotive Repair Act (CAR Act) to provide a written estimate before beginning any repairs, including the estimated price for parts and labor, and obtain customer authorization. We never got any of the aforementioned items plus he charged travel time without telling us ahead of time, which would've been a deal killer. As last year when he did not let us know he wasn't going to show, this year, again, he set the date and time for 9 am but didn't show until 1 o'clock without any notice. He spent two hours inspecting the front end and did not find anything. Took the vehicle to a garage and under one hour, they found the problem but did not charge for the inspection. We are demanding a full refund of $280 or a complaint will be filed with the BAR and Nevada County Court for a filing. What we experienced borders on elder abuse as I am 84 years old and was taken advantage of. We have saved all communication by him if and when we go to court. read more

Quality service at an excellent value! Before I go to far into my story let me just say, if you are in need of a truly talented mechanic Joe is your person! I highly recommend him!! I have a Volkswagon Eurovan Camper. Many mechanics can't or wont even work on them. Eurovan's are wonderful but you need to be talented or very experienced to work on them. We were stranded in Oroville with steam billowing out and alarms sounding off. It was late on a Saturday and most shops were closed or closing then a friend of a friend gave us Joe's name and I am so grateful they did. He came to our location and found the problem right away. He was able to locate a replacement part and had it express delivered to a nearby location. In the process of repair, he found the origin of the problem and rebuilt the wiring harness for the cooling fan on the spot. I was delighted and amazed he did all of this work and got us safely on the road in just over 24 hours. Amazing!! I wish I lived closer to Joe because I would take all of our cars to him for work. I would like to add that he did come to check on us that Saturday night. He was working other jobs and the soonest he could get to us was 2am. By then we had managed to move the van to a large well lit parking lot and we were sound asleep in a safe place. I really appreciated that he checked to make sure we were okay and out of danger. I contacted Joe to diagnose and repair a van. He scheduled an appt. and as we waited patiently, he never showed up and did not call. Sent several messages with no response. A month later he called stating "something came up" so he wasn't able to keep the appt. We left town for over a month and after returning I contacted Joe, (by the way, the worst person replying to a message takes days or weeks) he finally responded saying the current week would work for him. I asked him to pick a day and time, I sent another message with no response so I suggested a day and time. A couple of days later he confirmed a day and time. Day came and just short of the time, sent a message "something came up" so running a couple of hours late. I cancelled an important appt. based on the time he set up. At this point I told him to forget it we would find another mechanic because if he is that flakey I did not trust he would do a good job. Would not recommend hime to anyone. read more

This review is long overdue. Over Memorial Day Weekend, my husband and I drove up to Truckee for a little R and R. As we pulled up to our cabin late on Friday night, smoke started billowing from our engine. This was the first lucky break we had. The second was we found Joe on Yelp the next day. We took pictures of the engine and he was able to diagnose a busted radiator. He picked up a new radiator and installed it the next day. His price was very reasonable and the work was impeccable. I was on the way to Collins Lake and my car started to heat up in the 103° heat. Luckily I made it to the campsite. I messaged Joe from Yelp and he responded right away. He asked a few questions and was able to diagnose my issue (old fan clutch) just from a phone call. I asked him to also change my thermostat and radiator since he was going to change my fan clutch. He ordered my parts and the next day drove to the campsite and repaired my car on the spot. Joe's rates and service are excellent.
