My husband and I had tickets to see the Magic Flute opera (a review within a review-but it was magnificent!) at 7:30pm, so we had to eat dinner beforehand. Naturally, we chose somewhere walking distance which is from Abernethy's standpoint a genius move location wise. We came during Andy Allo's (if I was ever in Prince's band in my lifetime you couldn't tell me sh*t) chef residency which is likely ending sometime this year. We are also fans of the show "Upload" and had hoped to catch a glimpse of her. Sadly, it was an opera night and she was understandably too busy. The menu was inspired from her Cameroonian heritage, and had a couple of fancy schmancy items like short rib and fish plates you'd find at a high end restaurant. I'm so glad we chose this place as our dinner was so tasty and flavorful. We had never eaten Cameroonian food before, and eating food from countries in the same continent wouldn't really give us an idea what we were in for either. We ordered some refreshing cocktails to start off. My husband ordered the "Diamonds and Pearls" (I'm sure it was inspired by Chef Allo's stint with Prince) cocktail which had passion fruit and pineapple, and I ordered the pure guava which really had a pure guava taste lol. For an appetizer, we ordered this savory puff with red bean and avocado sauce, and I couldn't describe what flavors I was eating aside from a tang and spiciness to go with our fluffy puffs which were dense enough to be sating. We both then ordered fish plates as our entrees. My husband ordered the crispy skin branzino with cassava fries and spinach, plated on leek and njansa sauce. And I had the black cod with pepper tomato sauce, sweet yam and bell pepper relish. I never thought fish can come with flavors that can dance on your tongue like that. And my husband now wants to eat cassava fries with every meal. We hope Chef Allo moves this menu to a brick and mortar one day because our dinner absolutely spectacular. read more

This restaurant features a new chef to showcase their talents and is located on the Music Center grounds so the crowd is dependent on the patrons of the entertainment facilities. The environment is light and beautiful which is a relief. The patio is larger than the inside of the restaurant so if you prefer the inside on a night where there are popular shows I would suggest a reservation. The service was incredible. All we had to do was look at our waiter and he was by our table side. What I did not enjoy was the limited menu. The choices were not my favorites except for the Branzino. But I like to try new foods so I ordered the chicken with peanut stew which is a popular dish in Cameroon where the chef was from. The title did not adequately describe. It was a small chicken breast with peanut sauce. Not a stew. The portions are small so eat before you come if you are a big eater like I am. And don't be surprised when your portion of dinner with tip is $90. My observation for the fine dining experiences at the music center is that the restaurants lien heavily on a built-in audience rather than fully concentrating on the food. The food experience is wonderful but every time I eat at one of the restaurants on the music center grounds I give the food a C grade at best. I shouldn't have to order a cheeseburger at the grill in order to get a decent meal for the prices you pay. And that includes a variety that is satisfying and made up a favorites. I would go back to Abernathy's again. But I would check out the menu before I did and make my decision from that. And not just count on the chefs name and reputation. Because I don't want to go how hungry and not satisfied after spending almost $100 for dinner. read more

Very little time to eat before the show, but our server made sure the kitchen knew we had a show to catch in less than an hour. Limited options for the time we had but am glad this was available right outside the Mark Taper theatre. Huge wine and spirits list, but they don't stay open for the after theatre crowd. I enjoyed the bruschetta and fried squash blossoms, the pasta was a good chew and delicious meat bolognese sauce - was quite filling! Lots of interesting cocktail concoctions. Good for a pre show date. read more

Came here for dinner before a show and got quick service and great food. The bread was fluffy and warm and the dessert was amazing. I ordered the black cod and the others the short rib. Both had great presentation. I liked the flavor of the sweet potato with tomato but the fish was overcooked and a bit dry! read more

We made a reservation online easily and showed up a little early and were seated quickly. We already looked at the menu before we arrived so we knew what we wanted. Placed our order and our food came out shockingly fast, we almost didn't think it was ours. The sangria was delicious. The crispy branzino was so tender and flavorful. The avocado and papaya salad was one of the best things I've ever tasted. I highly suggested making a reservation. We saw lots of people being turned away because they are only open a few hours before a show starts. The outside seating was nice since it wasnt too hot. Our dessert was the only thing that took forever to come out, but it was very good. The tamales were not a hit for us. I loved what I ordered and would definitely get the Branzino, salad and sangria again. read more

My parents, my husband, and I came here for dinner before seeing Mamma Mia. We are Asian American, and unfortunately, our experience with our server, Kyle, was extremely disappointing. Throughout the entire dinner, we felt ignored and unwelcome. We asked Kyle for iced water three separate times, but it never came. The fourth time, we finally asked another staff member, who brought it to us. When Kyle took our order, his manner was extremely rude and dismissive. We had questions about the menu, but he did not make an effort to answer them, and after taking our order, there was essentially no service or attention from him for the rest of the meal. What made the experience particularly uncomfortable was the way we felt we were being treated as Asian customers. I cannot know Kyle's intentions, but the difference in treatment left us feeling that our race may have played a role. For a restaurant celebrating African cuisine and culture, I would have expected an atmosphere that felt welcoming and inclusive to people of all backgrounds. Based on our experience, I would not recommend this restaurant, particularly to other Asian or non-white diners. read more

TL;DR: GET THE STICKY BACON! We got here on a Sunday right at 11am opening, and beat the crowd. Our server Chris was warm & attentive, & all our food was EXCELLENT. Latte - delicious Pane - worth the extra charge for this warm, crusty bread & salted whipped butter Salmon - so perfectly cooked, juicy with crispy skin, served with charred broccolini & a startlingly good romesco sauce Sticky bacon - o.m.g. - a side of the BEST bacon I've ever had. Sticky, mapley, chewy, & yessss all mine bc my pescatarian friend wanted nothing to do with it haha. This was a fantastic brunch in a really convenient location before we saw a play at the Mark Taper Forum next door. Everyone, come here for that sticky bacon. It IS crack. read more

What a fun evening! We had a great dining experience before theater. The service was great, food was excellent and beautifully presented and the atmosphere was relaxing! Appetizers were outstanding, and the main entree was mouth watering amazing! Our curtain time was at 7:00 PM so we were seated at 4:30 and leisurely dined before going to the show! Beautiful environment, we choose to eat on the covered patio however there is inside seating available as well. read more

Mehhhhh... Seeing a play in the area, and decided to pop in for brunch at this cute little set up. Brunch menu was extremely limited, but I managed to find the bananas foster french toast to my liking. It was exactly what it said it would be. No complaints, it was good and so was the side of regular bacon (not to be confused with their sticky bacon.) There did not seem to be any room for many substitutions, as I wanted another dish but not the poached egg that it came with. The egg switch was not allowed. Same for a dish that my friend wanted. Our server was around...but not too interested to be honest. The host (forgot his name, but he was a lovely guy from Idaho), he showed the table way more attention and was very helpful with menu selections. I probably would not try this place again. read more

I came here before seeing a play at the Ahmanson over the weekend. My family ordered the burrata and the steak Benedict and both of them were underwhelmed. I had the carbonara and was having a great time. The sauce was a little thicker than I would have normally eaten it (I would have added just a hint more pasta water but that's just me) and the noodles stuck together quite a bit but the flavor was perfect and the little bits of guanciale were crispy and tasty. My whole family said that they would like to have it the next time they go but the chef changes often. I'm glad I got it while I could. The staff was kind and quick to get us to our destination as we were there for a performance. There's outdoor and semi-indoor seating. We sat inside and enjoyed the walls opening up to expose the quad. Enjoy! read more

Abernethy's is a great spot for grabbing a bite before seeing anything at the Music Center in DTLA. The prices are good and the staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. I'm knocking a star off because I they brought us to two different outside tables that didn't have working heaters. Plus, I happened to be on a restricted diet and when I asked for things like plain pasta and/or ginger ale, they couldn't accommodate. BUT my friend ordered the steak and she loved it so much she cleaned her plate. Definitely check it out if you're heading to any of the productions at the Music Center. You can't beat the location so you will have plenty of time to leisurely dine before the curtain goes up! read more

We enjoyed Abernethy's during the first week of September while Guest Chef Adolfo Perez developed the menu. The outdoor seating is lovely and there's a nice high-top bar inside. This is great spot for summertime performances at the Music Center. We were a walk-in party of two on a Wednesday around 6PM, and we didn't have to wait for a table. We started the meal with a generous helping of guacamole with elote seasoned tortilla chips. The guac was so abundant that we requested additional chips, and the elote seasoning was spot-on. We knew we wanted dessert, so we decided to split an entree to save room. We enjoyed the Surf & Turf Burrito, served enchilada-style - shrimp, steak, rice and beans rolled into a large tortilla, then topped with salsa and melted cheese. This was delicious and filling! We ended the meal with the flan in a pastry crust (common in French and British versions). The custard had a firmer texture, which paired nicely with the buttery and flaky pastry crust. On the side was an orange-zested whipped cream, roasted pistachios, and toasted shaved coconut, all dusted in powdered sugar. I look forward to seeing what other menus their guest chefs create next. read more

We came here at 6:15PM on 09/03/2025 for a pre-theater dinner. (of course, most people come here for pre-theater dinner, as it is in the music plaza). So, they need to have it together! And they did just that. We arrived and were seated promptly, with options for indoor or outdoor seating. We chose indoor. Our server was very pleasant and attentive throughout our service. Our party of two shared the Guac & Chips, the surf & turf enchilada burrito and the flan. All three of our dishes were wonderful. The guac was seasoned to perfection, and as an added bonus the chips were also seasoned. The burrito almost resembled a "wet" burrito with some cheese and sauce on the top and it was filled with beans, rice, shrimp and steak. The flan was also good. The only thing I was not crazy over was the Orange Wine that I had; however, that is no fault of the establishment. I just picked the wrong wine. I would definitely return here again in the future. read more

I dined here before a show so this restaurant was largely chosen for convenience. The chef changes every few months so this is for Chef Lucio Bedon working on April 2,2026. I started with the burrata caprese which you really can't mess up so it was delicious. I love a caprese, especially with burrata! I ordered the mushroom truffle risotto and the steak. The risotto had great flavor but was slightly under done. A little too much bite for my taste. The steak was ordered medium and arrived (after the risotto which was weird) well done. The waiter noticed I was looking at all the pieces and asked if everything was ok so I said the steak was well done and not medium at all. Even the middle pieces were very well done. The waiter agreed and took it back. The second steak that arrived was still too well done to be considered medium. Very little pink. I didn't want to complain again plus we were on a time crunch so I just ate it. $44 for a steak that's not exactly what you want is very disappointing. I would suggest not cutting it before service as from the taste I don't think it received the 15 minutes resting time it needed to remain juicy and tender. The service was attentive as it wasn't too crowded and the location and vibes were nice (hence the 2 stars) but based on food alone I would not return. read more

I have loved going to Abernethy's for years and I love that they change the chef. My friends and I unfortunately did not enjoy the food from the new Chef as of June 23rd. We ordered tamales, donuts, boiled chicken, short rib and the fries, most of it was sent back and the other we didn't eat. I had booked reservations for all the events we have at the Music Center, needless to say I've changed all of my Reservations I'm sad that we will not be going to Abenethy's this season. Also, I had pulled off a piece of the German pancake to taste it, I sent it back, the man next to me ordered the Short rib with the German pancake, and I saw that he was eating the pancake I had...it was missing the piece I pulled off!!! read more

Good restaurant that is central to the Music Center on Grand. If you're attending a show at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Mark Taper Forum, or the Ahmanson, then you may as well make a reservation for Abernethy's! They rotate menus every 6 months (according to our server) and feature a chef each time. Right now the chef is Pyet Despain serving foods that are native to the Americas. So salmon, cod, quail, duck, etc. and no steak, chicken, or eggs. Very interesting way to cut expensive eggs out of the menu! Everything on the dinner menu was priced in order of size, top-to-bottom and small-to-large. This is a pricier restaurant, expect to pay $50-$70 per person. I'm going to list out what I sampled in order of enjoyment, from least to most. What I Enjoyed * blue corn cookies and coconut dulce de leche cookies - these cookies had good texture. It really has a more masa-like taste than a dessert or cookie, akin to a tamale. I craved milk after eating this. * Déjà vu mocktail was prickly pear shrub, ginger beer, lime, and bitters blend. It was heavier on the bitters end. I would not order it again. My friend enjoyed an actual cocktail on the menu, and said they'd come back for the drinks alone. The Dark Winds cocktail- which is rum, rum fire, allspice dram, creme be banana, horchata, and pineapple- was delicious and highly recommended. * The duck ham was smoked duck breast, duck skin chicharron, water cress and sorrel with radish and an orange and honey vinaigrette. Small but big on the taste and wow factor. I'd love to make an entire sandwich out of this duck ham. * Tuna salad was a corn tostada with pico de gallo, bell peppers, sesame seed and avocado. Everything was portioned out to share, which is nice. This tuna salad was served like a ceviche, so you load up your own tostada. * The corn husk steamed cod with pickled corn puree, nopales, cilantro and lemon was a satisfying entree. It packed a sweet punch over spiciness. I think cactus is criminally underused in a lot of Mexican food. * Lastly, my personal meal highlight was the roasted sweet potato. Served up like giant French fries. Which is much more satisfying than sad, thin sweet potato fries at other restaurants. The salsa macha the potatoes were served with was dark and delicious, with a spicy kick that wasn't overpowering. Our server was attentive and mindful of our time limit. Our reservation was for 6:15PM, and all courses were served, eaten, and paid for by around 7:35PM. Leaving us with plenty of time to walk across the courtyard to the Mark Taper Forum for a performance of Fake It Until You Make It. There's a small interior, and most of the seating is technically outdoors on the courtyard. It is a space enclosed within a tent. There's heaters on full blast above each table, so the space is very warm and inviting. The table was actually hot to the touch and I started sweating at some point. No need to wear your coat or scarf to this place. Parking is available below the restaurant. The Music Center parking garage fee is $10. read more

Came with friends after an Ahmanson performance and were seated immediately bc we had a reservation. Adolfo Perez was the chef of modern Mexican cuisine today. We had the beef tacos (3/$16), chicken tacos (3/$14), street corn salad ($16), Oaxacan chocolate cream with cherries, pistachio crème brûlée (delicious!) and apple crisp a la mode (not apple pie). It's a modern twist that's really scaled down. Of everything, my fav was the pistachio creme brûlée. While good and beautifully plated, I felt my chicken tacos could've been more substantial. My friend was unimpressed with her beef tacos. The apple crisp was composed of essentially a couple of slices of apples and scoop of ice cream. The place was expensive for what we had. The restaurant is convenient to go after a performance and is in front of the Mark Taper near the restrooms. Our server was sweet, friendly and helpful. read more

Good foodie spot in the Music Center if you are not too hungry or want a very light dinner before a show or concert, because the dishes here are super pretty but super skimpy -- wafer thin duck slices, one taco per order -- even the entree (stuffed pablano) is rather small for sharing. On June 30th, 2026, my wife made a reservation at Abernethy's for 2 at 5:00 P.M. on July 31. We were to have dinner there before walking to the Music Center for the ballet. She received a confirmation so we assumed we were good to go. Then today, July 10th, she received a text from Abernethy's saying that they had cancelled our reservation! When my wife called to ask what was going on, the woman who answered said that they were going to be closed on July 31st. When asked why, the woman said she had no idea. Nobody told her why. Great way to run a business, eh? NOT. They didn't know they would be closed a month before? No reason given? I thought, is the 31st a holiday of some sort that I wasn't aware of? I found that July 31st is celebrated as National Avocado Day and National Mutt Day, which honors mixed-breed dogs. Hardly reasons to close shop. So now we had to scramble to find a restaurant that still had open tables for the 31st, which nearly all did not. After searching all afternoon thankfully we finally got an accommodation that would work. Picture this: you buy your not-inexpensive tickets and then plan a nice evening, a leisurely dinner as a prelude to a wonderful evening at the ballet...and then you are told, sorry, you're not dining HERE. Well, guess who won't be dining THERE in the future? read more

What happened here? This place was a disaster. Was never this bad before tonight. Sat at 4::30 for a 6:00 show and barely made it, even though the venue was next to the restaurant. Took 20 minutes for bread. BREAD! A basket with 4 slice. 25 minutes for 2 glasses of wine and and screwed one up. Messed up both orders of food. NO VEGAN OPTIONS. Take that off of the YELP description. Waiter did not even understand "vegan." Ran out of IPAs, screwed up the coffee. Every table around us seemed miserable and audibly complained. This place was OK last time, but this time seemed deliberately terrible. To improve, get one thing right, then build off of that. read more

Whitley the branzino was good, it looked sparse and incomplete with only crispy potato "fingers" on the side.. And, I was surprised that at a venue like the Mus ic Center, there were only four main course choices. I was a guest, so perhaps this is typical of this particular restaurant.. The arugula salad was good but the leaves had so many stems still attached that it was impossible to eat it without cutting with a knave - Otherwise, the stems hung out of one's mouth! read more

Good location for a small meal before a performance at any of the venues at the Music Center. Entree portions could more accurately be called Tapas-sized. The marinated crust on the salmon was flavorful and the cod was delicious, but the mezcal chocolate cake was dry and inedible (fortunately they did remove it from our bill though). Service is in need of improvement. The wrong dessert was initially brought out and we were charged more for our bottle of wine than was reflected on the menu. When we pointed it out to the server she said we were charged for four glasses of wine, rather than the bottle which we poured from and remained on our table. She went and grabbed a menu to show us the price and then realized we were correct, so the bill was adjusted a second time. read more

We were delighted when we were able to be accommodated without a reservation for dinner a little over an hour before our show at the Ahmanson began. The hostess and one of the waiters was very friendly and agreeable to seating us in the dining room by the bar. The food was delicious. We each had the agnolotti with short rib filling. We split the arugula and berry salad and an order of Brussels sprouts . There were three pasta courses listed on the menu that were unavailable but we were happy with our choices. All of the food was excellent. Our waitress never put in our drink orders. Our brussels sprouts and salad came out together quickly. The pasta came out before we had finished our salad. While we were limited on time, the restaurant's clientele is almost exclusively theatergoers so we were surprised that the pacing was off. We asked the waitress and the busser for a box. It would love to say it was great, but, like everything else associated with this theater complex, it was overpriced and minimal quality. The service was fine. Friendly and accommodating with seats that any people watcher could enjoy. My martini was smaller and weaker than I expected at this price. I mean, you have a lovely bar, why not lean in ? The food was curated by chef/ musician Andy Allo, and had a Caribbean twist. It was light and sweet, more like appetizers than a substantial meal. These could be considered failings or virtues, depending on your preferences. As a light meal and little sip before a show , this may work for you. Had my stomach complaining for a few hours. You can't really get an accurate read of Abernethy's based on the overall Yelp rating due to the restaurant's concept of rotating their chefs. So the Yelp rating reflects a potpourri of chefs. It just so happens that the current up and coming chef-in-residence, Brad Willits, is super talented, and his portion of stars is a FIVE from me. I believe front of house remains the same, and Chantal was professional, thoughtful, awesome, and overall lovely. The vodka pasta was highly recommended by her, and I trusted her. She was right. It was perfectly executed. I did change the noodle with the other pasta option on the menu, as I'm not big on penne, and it was just so right. Perfectly al dente, perfectly sauced, perfect portion. I'm still thinking about it. I asked for whatever red she recommended with my pasta and I was brought a Justin cab. I thought I might be brought something a little more interesting, but also I could have been a bit more specific. The TOMATOES dish was well done. It came with some fresh mozzarella, capers, basil, and sherry vinegar. Now that I'm taking another look at the menu, I'm realizing that my dish was missing the promised pinenuts, which is a big bummer, as that would have added a perfect something. As someone who grows bored rather quickly, this concept of chefs with limited seasonal engagements really speaks to me! I'm looking forward to the next visit to Abernethy's to try out the next chef du jour, but I also know that I can visit Chef Brad's permanent restaurant at Market in Venice when my next craving for his food is sure to strike. Variety is the spice of life, and I am madly in love with this idea of limited seasonal engagements of chefs; it's especially brilliant that this concept restaurant is located at the Music Center, since each visit to the Music Center will come with it a BRAND NEW EXPERIENCE. I love that! read more
