We came here for a murder mystery. Apparently it's been running for 39 years! When you come in you are invited to join the upstairs where the murder mystery takes place. It was a wonderful time with dedicated actors. We were seated at a shared table and I personally would recommend that as the preference. The food we were served was well cooked and delivered in a timely manner. The menu for murder mystery is preset. Overall the facility had a very old school vibe. Definitely worth a visit! read more

May 17/2024: Dinner with Keith & Nancy. This place has been here in one iteration or another for many years. It's real old school for a restaurant. I started with a Caesar Salad ($15.00). Very tasty with locally sourced pork as bacon bits. It was tasty & garlicy just the way I like it. My main was the Rotini Gorgonzola with beef tips ($27.00). Again, very tasty, a little light on the beef tips but overly heavy on the salt content. Our server "Sarah" had a great sense of humour & provided a decent level of service. Had lunch there recently. Superb service, friendly staff. I had the best steak I ever tasted in my life: cooked exactly as specified: medium rare. More than that, the steak itself was incredibly tender: truly "melt in your mouth" The mussels as an appetizer were plentiful and delicious. Well worth the significant price. read more

Aberfoyle Mill is one of those small town fine dine, back in time experience in grandmas dining room. The location has does a great job to set the table, to give that table cloth experience that you expect with fine dine and the multi course meal. Definitely want to know how to use your multi forks and knives before going in :D. Periodically this location runs eventful dine in events for patrons like the mystery theatre show. It is located just off the first exit into Guelph from Toronto, you literally pass it on the way in. Salads are great, anything steak is a great job. They also run a prime rib special Friday, Saturday, Sunday. The interior is not for everyone, for a fine dine, most insta sorts expect to have well lit environment and taking for up photos living it big, but here, you will find yourself in a tavern dark interior so bring your back flash :D. If you do stop in, visit during the day and get some photos outside it's absolutely rustic. Held a group work meeting there and had a great time in a private room. The food choices were wide selection and the wine list was adequate with some good value selections. The appearance from outside makes you question but once inside I liked the historic feel. Not until I needed a restroom break did I feel like I needed to explore and once I did wow. First off, the food was excellent! The prime rib, the tenderloin steak and the salmon were all amazing! The desserts were also excellent with two gluten-free options. It was my mom's 85th birthday. We asked the waiter what they can do for the "birthday girl" and he said that he can stick a candle in any dessert she chooses. No free dessert was offered!! Very strange when there were six of us and the total bill was over $400. It really annoyed my mom. Also the menus were on pieces of paper (not very classy) with only one drink menu for the table. The waiter asked us what we wanted to drink but it took us time to share that one drink menu so we felt rushed by him. The ambiance was rustic. My parents remember the water wheel that used to be inside the restaurant but it is no longer there, which disappointed them. Summary: excellent food but we felt rushed, we received no free birthday dessert, the menus seemed cheap on paper and there should be a drink menu given to each person. They recognize regulars and welcome them like family. Unfortunately I can no longer dine there because it is not handicapped accessible. This place was so close to having a 5* review from me. Located in the heart of Aberfoyle in Puslinch, this mill is an affordable option for fine dining with cozy country charm just as they market it. Rather dim lighting throughout the restaurant as early as 5:30 p.m. First off, we chose sautéed shrimp with olive oil, parsley, garlic, and baguette. The shrimps were perfectly done and the toppings all complimented well it. I really like how it was simply not shrimps alone and almost like a light meal in itself. The prime rib is their usual weekend evening feature and it is apparently limited and by 6:30 p.m. today, they already ran out of it. It was overall well done and the parsley and asparagus further added to the taste. Instead of rice, they had a sizeable portion of mash potato that was not creamy or chunky, but rather smooth. My Atlantic char was rather moist and again the parsley and asparagus were both a lovely addition to my entree. The rice was lean and drier than what I am used to, so hopefully that only means less carbs. The yellow peppercorn sauce added more colours to the plating and presentation rather than actual taste though. Definitely a meal with good value. However, as it is in a smaller town, I do not think that the manager/owner is very friendly or hospitable to people outside of the town or non-Caucasians as every other diner besides us were white. The manager/owner regularly circulated around the restaurant making small talk to almost every guest, but us. Twice, he spent several minutes at every table that was in the same dining room as my beau and I, but he only came to our table once to ask us if everything else was ok at the very end of our dinner. Coincidence, I think not. If he bothered to catch up with the locals and everyone else then it would be nice (and obviously within his means) to be greeted with more than just "Hope you enjoyed your dinner." This subtle difference is enough for me to enjoy this dinner, because of the quality food, but not come back another time. Our server was an older gentleman and although he had adequate service for a fine dining place, he would rather attend to other tables before ours even though we were seated right next to the back kitchen and service area... once or twice is fine, but he did it again at the bill and this along with the manager's subtle difference in friendliness towards us makes us think that they see us as second rate, compared to regulars or local Caucasians. By no means were they rude, but that is what we felt. So overall great place for local Caucasians. You get an additional personal catching up and/or welcome from the manager/owner, too! ;) I rather go back to Bellefountaine Inn for their dinner though if I am ever back west in this area. They had great tasting food AND they made us feel welcomed and like VIPs, too! For a $100 meal for two, they should really have treated us like honoured guests even if we are obviously not locals or regulars. read more

We were 2 couples getting together for dinner. Place looked great. The waiter took our drink orders and gave us time to chat and decide what we wanted to order for dinner. Both couples ordered a Caesar salad to share, and 3 of the 4 ordered prime rib, one medium well and 2 medium rare. The salad came out split for one couple, and the delivery person said only one had been ordered. The other was brought out a few minutes later, no big deal. When the entrees came out, the 2 medium rare were rare, and the medium well was medium rare. I kept one rare and ate it, but the other 2 sent theirs back. The medium rare came out looking as rare as it was at first, but was consumed, and the medium well came back medium at best. it was sent back again and finally came back well done and was eaten.The 2 that were rare were very chewey. When the bill is approaching $200 for each couple, I expect much better food. Also, another restaurant that has their credit card machine set to "help" you with a 15,18 and 20% button for you to tip, but the total includes the tax. I want to tip based on the food and service I received, not on the tax the restaurant has no say in. If you get people to tip on the tax, I suggest you send that portion of the tip to the government, and give me a tax receipt so I can claim it as a political donation. read more

My husband and I along with family and friends recently visited this establishment for the advertised Easter brunch. I must admit we were very disappointed. Although the restaurant is very clean the mill is a rustic heritage location, the well used dusty equipment and dirt clouded windows don't present well during the day. The food was simply okay and the offerings were quite limited for an AYCE brunch. There were salads but no soup, the breakfast items were limited to overly peppered scrambled eggs, French toast and waffles. No regular bacon or sausage only pea meal bacon with roasted potatoes and chickpeas with curry ?? The roasted beef and lamb were well cooked however lacked flavour of any kind. Their menu noted there was fresh fish under the hot items however we did not see any presented. The deserts were all vegan and aside from the cheese and fruit were surprisingly very enjoyable. The service was excellent, with the servers quick to clear and offer refills which was largely the saving grace for this visit. It's doubtful we would return here for an AYCE buffet again as considering the price $67.00 including the tax add the tip and the cost is minimally $77.00 for one person. It's doubtful we would return for their AYCE buffet it's simply not worth your money at this location. We may try their regular a la cart menu sometime in the future, however if you're looking for an AYCE buffet worth your time and money The Old Mill Toronto in Etobicoke is your best bet. read more

I have been to this restaurant a few times in the past and haven't had the opportunity to write a review until now. This one is a catch up review. This restaurant is located in Guelph near Brock Road and love its décor accented heavily with wood coupled with exceptional service. All my visits have been during late afternoon lunches and all of them have been business related. My favorite dish is the Almond Crusted Salmon. The portions of the food here are huge and so was this dish. The crust was near crispy and the salmon soft and delicious. This restaurant has several other signature dishes that are raved by the locals and they are right. The service is courteous and prompt. The servers are very friendly and knowledgable about food and wines, can ask them for any recommendations and they clearly enjoy their jobs. Meat and Potatoes! Went here for a business meeting. The decorations are a bit dated. Not sure how the meal would be. It was outstanding. I had the Cornfed Ontario Strip Sirloin, with Green Peppercorn Sauce. This was as good as any steak I have eaten in Canada. It was well worth the visit. I had a couple of domestic brews. Went back to my hotel room fat and full. Next trip venture into the city. I was in contact with the Toronto CM. Seemed nice. Maybe try an event if there is one when I visit. read more

My wife and I are 37. We felt like teenagers while we dined at the Aberfoyle Mill. It was amazing. The menu was short and thoughtful. The service, attentive and accurate. The decor, dated but interesting. With a significant amount of seating, you likely don't need a reservation. The faire is reasonably priced for fresh, good quality food. This restaurant is full of positive notes. Except for this small detail: everyone else dining in the restaurant was over 50. This certainly isn't negative, but in a university town where you come to expect a diverse range of ages, this is defiantly something to be aware of. If you're a little older and looking for a quaint, comfortable, quiet place to enjoy some company without the whippersnappers, give this place a try. I bet you'll really enjoy it. read more

Great experience. Started with reserving my table online from their website. Very convenient and received a confirmation via email. I also received a text message 30 mins prior to my reservation indicating that our table was ready. The service was excellent from the moment we walked in to the conversation with host as we left, offering us an umbrella from the many that have been left behind for weeks. We collectively had the ceasar salad and shrimp for starters, along with the pork chops and salmon for dinner. All where very good and my girlfriend said she's never had a better pork chop ever! My salmon was very nice as well with crushed pecans and a great cream and mustard sauce. We went for a German Riesling which was also a very good choice. Although we had no room left we added desert to our experience. The Creme Brule and pecan pie were both very worthwhile eating on an already full stomach! We were not rushed but our server was very attentive to us. We also had a request for gluten free bread and they prepared a fresh serving which was also very good. All in all we would go back for another special occasion. At over $150 all in for two it wasn't bad for three very good courses and a bottle of wine. read more

On our recent trip to Guelph we went here for our 23rd wedding anniversary. We loved the place. I highly recommend making reservations. Upon arrival we were seated promptly. We were quickly approached by our server to check on beverage service, followed by the owner who welcomed us to his restaurant and made us feel welcome. We both had the prime rib entre served with mashed potatoes and green beans and a roasted carrot. Then on advice from our server I had the Caesar Salad and my husband the roasted tomato soup. Both were delicious but the Caesar salad with had bacon on it was superb. By far the best Caesar salad I've had. To finish off our meal my husband and I shared the creme brûlée. Divine. We were in Puslinch doing some night-time photography and got hungry. This was the only restaurant that really came up in search, so we weren't sure what to expect. In the end, I would say we were pleasantly surprised. We got to the restaurant at 8:15pm, but they seated us warmly anyway even though they close at 8 on Sundays. The lighting was dim and the decorations were dated, but all in all, the environment was friendly and welcoming. The bread came first, and one type was a toasty baguette-style bread that was really yummy. We then ordered the duck liver for an app and was pleased although not overly impressed. The liver had a nice rich taste, but it's not something really out of expectations. Our mains were Confit of Duck and Pork Tenderloin. Both were tender and juicy; neither was overcooked as I find pork tenderloins are sometimes even at more-pricey venues. They were also both seasoned expertly, just enough to bring out the natural tastes of the meats. The dishes did lacked some creativity as they were traditionally created and both came with the same mashed potatoes and steamed veggies, but I did enjoy them both. This is a good place to visit if you're in the area and need a good, solid meal. read more

The Restaurant left a bad taste in my mouth... For the last 6 years I've taken clients for Christmas lunch here every December. I can honestly say this year will be out last. One of my clients joining us is battling terminal cancer. Due to his illness there are very few items he's able to digest. When he ordered he asked If he could have scrambled eggs. We were told NO because they're too busy over lunch to deviate from the menu. Needless to say the mood at our table changed. My client says to the waiter - no worries and doesn't order anything (he didn't want to make a fuss and he was embarrassed). The waiter took the rest of our orders knowing my client couldn't order anything from the menu. Another person at our table called over another waiter and quietly explained our dilemma and told him about my clients illness. This waiter also told us no and even said the restaurant had no eggs. What? I then excused myself from the table to try and find a manager to see if anyone in this place had any compassion whatsoever.(this is now our 3rd attempt to get a high end restaurant to make a plate of scrambled eggs) I did find a manager and we were able to get my client his lunch after much discussion. But at this point those of us at the table were so upset by how our sick friend was treated the mood of our table certainly changed. But for the sake of our friend we continued our lunch together. The other person at our table who talked to the second waiter over was still upset so he called the same waiter over again and said "why would you tell me you have no eggs yet we were able to get them". He told him the eggs are not for customers (and no, I'm not making any of this up). This ended up with a verbal confrontation between my friend and the waiter. After this the waiter continued to walk by table mumbling nasty comments under his breath that we all could hear. I paid and left. It was obvious the manager knew this lunch had gone bad but did nothing to try and fix things. Had he tried to fix the problem as soon as we explained about our friends dietary issues I would not be writing this negative review. Let me also add that my friend who was at the table who had the confrontation with the waiter tried to call the owner - left messages for the owner to call - no one called him back. And in case your wondering why we didn't just leave (which I wanted to). It's because we didn't want our sick friend to be even more uncomfortable or embarrassed than he already was. We were trying to have these conversations with the staff without him hearing. The more we tried to find some compassion the worst the situation got. I dine out a lot because I'm a sales representative. This ranks as the worst experience I've ever encountered in my 25 years in sales. Needless to say the Aberfoyle Mill is off my list as I'll never step foot inside this establishment again. read more

Very nice and antique looking building. Staff were very friendly. We ordered the mushroom pasta. We were expecting a cheese sauce for the pasta, but instead it tasted like mushroom soup. Just visited this restaurant with my parents visiting over from Europe. The Mill has very nice environment, good customer services, but the food was slightly under my expectations in this price range. I had a delicious salmon, but my parents ordered mixed grill meal and they weren't happy about that at all. Meanwhile, better selection of quality wine should be commonplace for such restaurant. My boyfriend took me here for my birthday because I have wanted to go since moving here. My mom has been to their murder mystery nights and said they were fantastic and our friends and family from the area love this place, so I finally got to go for my birthday and wow! It is worth the hype. The staff was incredible and friendly, the whole restaurant both inside and out is so pretty and comfortable, and the food was delicious. We ordered a half liter of wine (reasonably priced selection), Caesar salad, I had the rotini pasta with Gorgonzola sauce, and my boyfriend had the stuffed chicken. The Caesar salad is beyond good! Everything is made in house and the bacon that comes with it is Mennonite bacon and it was sizzling when it got the the table. Amazing! My pasta was really good but his stuffed chicken stole the show. It was probably top 5 chicken dishes that I have ever had! If it is your first time here I would highly recommend this dish. For dessert, because it was my birthday, the staff brought me a slice of cheesecake on the house which was also homemade and it was delicious. Overall everything was great and the prices were fair considering everything is made in house, but certainly not for dining on a budget. The food was good, what I would expect for the price. The service was fine, not outstanding, but granted they had to work around the dinner theatre. The dinner theatre was very disappointing. Cheesy and forced plot -- only 2 actors tried to pull off the whole evening and it felt like a high school play. The theme of the murder was not on the website and I hadn't thought to ask. "Alice in Wonderland" was what we walked into, and had I known, I would not have brought my 2 teenage kids there, who were looking forward to a decent murder mystery -- not, as I mentioned -- a cheesy scenario in what did not feel like a professional theatre at all. read more
