I Was thinking of getting a hot chocolate but decided to splurge and get a milkshake instead. It was divine and I'm looking forward to coming back here to dine. I would like to start off by saying this place is super cute and the service is great. They are very caring in terms of customer service. With that being said though, the main meals my friend and I had here were lack luster. He got the burger and I got a truffle chicken pizza but both of us thought our meals needed more salt. A weird thing to request for pizza right? That's how much more flavour I think it could have used. It wasn't terrible but salt would have definitely helped to bring out the flavours in the food. The pizza was also very greasy on the bottom which wasn't great. I was disapointed given that there menu looked fantastic originally. We did have good duck wings for a starter and fondue for dessert though. I might go back to give it another shot, just keeping in mind I might need a salt shaker handy. read more

One of the better meals I've had in a long time. Had the steak special which was a NY strip with cheddar and truffle bacon smashed potatoes and green beans. Everything was cooked to perfection. Steak was great and the veggies tasted crisp and fresh. My wife had the macaroni and cheese which was also very good. Very cheesy, fresh noodles and a nice crumb topping. For dessert we had the table side s'mores. What an awesome finish! Fresh marshmallows with chocolate bark, fruit and graham crackers. Roasting your own and making it yourself added to the fun. This was a cute little restaurant we found on our way to Guelph. Reviews on Google seemed alright so we decided to give it a shot. Unfortunately this place didn't show up on our Yelp search for some reason. The building itself is unique and cool. The staff were friendly and promptly sat us down. The restaurant wasn't too busy deposit showing up at 12:30pm on a Saturday. Menu is simple to navigate and a very good concept. This particularly stuck out as a positive and appreciated the simplicity. We were a party of 4. I ordered the hamburger and friends. My friends ordered the seafood sandwich and the other two ordered the salad and soup combo. Prices seemed to be reasonable as well. Firstly, I do like how they deliver food to the table. Food arrives on a cart all at once so no one has to wait. Nice touch. Secondly, the presentation is good. The soup and salad was served on nice slabs of wood. The burger arrived with a tower of potatoes which I found to be nice visually but unnecessary for the burger. My friend who ordered the soup and salad did seem to enjoy them though. My burger was almost indefinitely previously frozen. It didn't have the fresh ground beef vibe that I like and that is found at some of the good burger joints located in and around Ontario. The fires were great in texture but overly salted in my opinion. I tried the cream of mushroom and Stilton soup and it was ok. Definitely not worth writing home about. For a 'cream of' type soup, it wasn't creamy enough, although the deliciousness of Stilton did add flavour to the soup. The salad was sad. The fistful of lettuce was almost positively taken out of a bag and just plopped on the wooden board. Nothing but lettuce covered (overly) in a balsamic vinaigrette. While the price was right, the quality of the food, that we had anyway, was mediocre at best. Went here for dinner with my boyfriend! The place was very spacious, especially booths. I was told to make a reservation if I were to dine here on Friday or Saturday night. The place was packed, and in fact, people who did not make a reservation had to wait. Quick and friendly service and great food overall! I ordered lamb shank and my boyfriend ordered chocolate pasta (we were very curious to taste it). Meat was tender and liked the sauce (tomato-y but not that chocolate-y as I had hoped for). Chocolate flavor did not really stand out in the pasta dish either, well I guess they don't want to overpower the entire dish with chocolate flavor. We shared a chocolate molten lava cake for dessert, and it was on point! I strongly recommend trying it. What a disaster of an evening started with hot water with lemon, that tasted nothing like lemon. three of our four dinners came cold, the chicken was still partly frozen when I cut into it. The two meatloaf dinners were just not hot, maybe warm at best. asked for no onions, yup got onions. waitress tried to help, but the evening was to far gone.....they did adjust the bill, which was nice. waitress asked us about dessert, nope just wanted out as soon as possible. This review is based solely on the delivery and food rather then an in-dining experience. I used York Rd for a business lunch and was thankfully able to order from their dinner takeout menu. Staff that took my order was helpful; however I'm assuming since I called during a busy time (and they may have been short-staffed), I had to call back to complete my order (which I wasn't entirely fond of but I'm not going to complain on that). Food was delivered on time and although slightly smaller in quantity for the price, was pretty good. The goat's cheese torta and their chocolate desserts in particular were amazing. Being a restaurant with a heavy focus on chocolate, I am definitely planing to try their other chocolate-based menu items and desserts next time and dine in to catch a full experience. read more

This place is a nice little hidden gem in Guelph! Tucked away in the east end, pretty much in the middle of nowhere, this place would be easy to miss. The ambience inside is casual but romantic. The beer selection is amazing and usually features some local brews. The menu options are probably the most unique you'll find in the city, as they have several different features that are chocolate-inspired. I've been here for a fondu special that ended up being pricey for what it was, but was definitely enjoyable enough for me not to regret it. I've also had the spaghetti bolognese and LET ME TELL YOU it rocked my socks. Homemade pasta with a delicious bolognese sauce totally snuck up on me and wowed me. Maybe I have low pasta standards, but as far as I'm concerned it was wonderful. Make sure to call in for reservations on busy nights though, it gets packed quick. read more

Today, we took my daughter, her partner and two,grandsons here for dinner. We had a reservation and were seated right away at a spacious table. Our drinks were delivered quickly and the "Turtle" and Chocolate Shake were especially tasty for the two chocolate lovers in our group. The children's meals were both devoured and the adults enjoyed a pasta dish, salmon, and pork chops. All of the meals were good portions and very satisfying. The desserts (chocolate layer cake, chocolate lava cake) were a must if you like chocolate. I was tempted to rate this as 4 stars but there wasn't anything outstanding -everything was good and the pennies for flooring in the washroom was reminiscent of Scott McGillvray's home office. Made a reservation online and got several reminders to please be on time or we lose the reservation but we get there and had to wait 10 minutes while they got a table ready. The fries were supposed to have truffle oil but didn't. It was just plain fries. The tuna poke bowl had one flavour- lemon. Definitely expected more for the price. If you have ever eaten at the Other Brother, the sister property to the YRK, don't get your hopes up. The restaurant opened in June but looked like a bad renovation of the previous restaurant. First Impression: There is limited parking so we parked near the back of the restaurant. There were three toilet bowls sitting out back for all to see. Walking around the front different coloured rope lights outlined the front windows. Walking inside the YRK looked inviting until we got to our seat. The far back left booth was positioned so the table has to be moved in order to slip into the booth. Because of the 11x17 size of the menu some were burnt from the candle on the table. The Drinks: Drinks took a good 7-9 minutes to arrive after ordering. We were a party of four and there was nothing special ordered. The Food: I ordered the soup of the day which was a parsnip blend of something. When my soup arrived it had an oil slick on the side of the bowl. It tasted like bacon and while tasty, my server informed me it was not the right soup if it tasted like bacon. I ordered a gluten free pasta but when my pasta arrived it had bread beside the entree. Again my server realized she had entered it incorrectly. The Service: Our server clearly needed more training. She didn't seem to know what was in the soup, made ordering mistakes and was not very accommodating. When I made a comment about the flies and fruit flies buzzing through the facility, she made the excuse that it was because the door was opened often at the front. Been here many times. It's our favorite spot in Guelph. We go out of our way to come here. The food, the ambiance, the service is excellent. Chef has taken extra care in selecting the dishes for the York Rd Kitchen. The dishes are traditional infused with fun. With a passion for chocolate, Chef adds some interesting chocolate spice to some of the dishes. I've had the chocolate rubbed Sirloin Steak on a previous visit. Very good! Our last visit was at lunch time and the food was wonderful. I had the pulled beef brisket, in a light sauce, on a toasted bun with an onion ring in the sandwich. Slow Cooked Brisket, Garlic Mayo Asiago Cheese, House Slaw & Onion Rings. Fantastic! To accompany my sandwich I had the soup of "du-jour", a carrot puree infused with ginger root and a dollop of coconut milk. The soup had a bit of a kick to it, but it was soothing and warm. My wife enjoyed the traditional Ruben Melt Sandwich, Pastrami, Sauerkraut, Cheese, Aioli on Rye with a side Caesar and my lovely daughter had the Chicken & Mushrooms (without the mushrooms) The pasta dish has Spinach, Basil Pesto Cream Sauce, Shaved Cheese, Fettuccine Noodles. Delish! Everything was perfect! The service was excellent. The kitchen prides itself on made to order. Want something special, just ask. Well done Karim and Sara! Came here for dinner last night with my family. We had to wait a very long time for our drinks and our food even though we were there before the place packed up. I ordered the yrk bacon Caesar to drink, which was very flavorful. My steak, however was barely seasoned. It was cooked quite nicely but the lack of seasoning really ruined it for me. The accompanying fries were quite nice, however the potato spiral had no salt at all and was cold and dry. The savory chocolate sauce tasted quite nice but it had clearly been sitting out for a while as it was cool and had a skin on top. I finished my meal with a spiced hot chocolate which was absolutely delicious. I don't think I would ever go here again for dinner, but my dessert and cocktail were both quite delectable. In an area chalk full of pubs and well-established restaurants, it's no wonder that Guelph is starting to see a few "theme" eateries enter the scene. The York Rd Kitchen and Chocolate Bar's claim to fame isn't a signature dish or prime location, but rather a clear focus on chocolate themed desserts and drinks. To fill out the menu, the York Rd Kitchen offers unusually traditional options such as hamburgers and fajitas. Their dinner menu lacks the imagination that you'd expect from a theme restaurant. My guess is that they're trying to remain "family friendly" to cater to the audience that previously occupied the space at Cagney's. To me however, it feels like the York Rd Kitchen isn't really sure if it should be a lounge, a bar, or a place where you'd take your kids on Tuesday's for the free appetizer. The prices are reasonable ($15-$20 per plate) while the decor is interesting and modern. During my visit, the wait staff was attentive, but clearly inexperienced and rushed. If the dessert and drink menus expand, along with the hours of operation (they close at 10), this could become a really great place to visit after enjoying dinner somewhere else. read more

I went here for Valentine's Day for a friend's birthday and everyone enjoyed the food. We did wait a long time for our food to come out. We only ordered one appetizer so the waitress suggested having it all come out together so it would be faster. Still, I think we got there at 5:20 for a 5:30 reservation and our meal didn't arrive until after 6:30. We did have the Mexican spiced sipping chocolate while we waited, which is just about the best couple of tablespoons of anything you'll ever drink. It is actually spicy though so don't order it if you can't handle those cinnamon heart candies or really gingery ginger cookies. We had the skillet garlic bread (overly greasy and lacking in garlic flavour), braised pork ribs (they were only okay; I was glad we were sharing because I wouldn't have wanted more than two ribs of that, the slaw with it wasn't good but the fries with it were awesome), the mac and cheese with truffled bacon (off the hook - so great; but pretty rich so I was glad I had someone to share it with), and my friends had the braised beef pasta (they said it was good). For dessert we had S'mores Tableside (good for the gimmick), chocolate mousse (good but a bit sweet), chocolate lava cake (good), and the layered dark chocolate fudge cake (loved it). I plan on going back for the spiced sipping chocolate, mac and cheese, and fudge cake. read more

Went here last night with my cousin and her two children. We were seated quite quickly which was good, the restaurant is very interesting, has some unique decor which I liked. The server came to get our drink order in a timely manner, I ordered a cesear, which is amazing - one of the best cesear's I've had in the longest time. The kid ordered juice and it came in a cute little mason jar with lid, A+ on the drinks. Me and my cousin both ordered the crab and shrimp mac and cheese, the kids got a quarter chicken with fries and pizza and fries. The dishes came out looking very nice with a small side salad. However, the Mac and cheese was less then appetizing. The cheese tasted processed and bland. There was literally not a single nugget of crab in the noodles, if I'm paying $18 for Mac and cheese please give me what is being advertised. The side salad was cute with a nice mix of spinach, cabbage, arugula etc. The kids meals were very nice, the fries were addictive and the chicken was a nice healthy portion. We decided to do the table side s'mores dessert, which I didnt regret. I came with a good mix of marshmallows, graham crackers, chocolate, cookies and fruit. A lot of fun and super tasty. Overall, my main was sorely lacking but my drink and dessert were in point. The service initially was quite good but petered out and slowed as we were there longer. This restaurant is on York Rd on the east side of Guelph. This is a growing residential area with nowhere to eat other than fast food places . While the restaurant is in an unattractive stretch of road, it is accessible, has free parking and was busy on the night we stopped in. The decor is attractive with a mix of wood, and stone. Music was audible but did not over power conversation which is a plus. There is a bar/lounge area with a small menu of snacks and several other seating areas in the restaurant. We were seated in a hexagonal room with large windows that had sun shades that filtered the light but let you see out. The menu is not large but had some interesting selections. We had a house salad of arugula, raspberries, toasted sunflower seeds, asiago cheese and a fruit flavoured dressing. There was one entree for vegetarians, a baked eggplant masala with peanuts, basmati rice, naan, and chopped vegetable side. They offer three or four cheese fondues and we ordered one of these. It arrived served attractively on a wooden board with a small fondue pot for one, with heating candle underneath; some cold roasted potato, chunks of french bread and cherry tomato. We were surprised to find that the fondue was almost cold, and had not been preheated before serving. We asked about the temperature and the wait staff said it would heat up in awhile with the candle. A disappointing entree as the diner either had to eat it while the cheese was thick and lukewarm, or sit and wait while their companions ate until the fondue was warm enough to eat properly. The Chocolate bar is their dessert menu with 8 or so chocolate desserts and a number of chocolate cocktails and beverages. We tried the Michel Cluizel chocolate fondue and the chocolate mousse. The mousse arrived in a jelly jar, three layers filled to the brim with milk ,white and dark chocolate. The milk chocolate layer was light and creamy, the white chocolate layer grainy , and the dark was so dense that it was like fudge. The The fondue was nicely presented on a wood platter with a small piece of banana bread, pound cake, 2 raspberries, a strawberry, gooseberry, blackberry and 3 homemade potato chips. It did not seem to be much to dip in the fondue but was exactly the right amount to use up the entire small pot. Again we found the fondue was not very warm, remained quite thick never became smooth and silky. With 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 desserts, and 4 non alcoholic beverages, our bill, with 15% tip, was about $80 We were prepared to like this restaurant more than we did, but also recognize that it has just opened and is likely working out kinks in the menu and staffing. We will visit again. Given how busy it was reservations might be in order on weekend nights. read more

We were really hoping that this restaurant would be good. It is close to home and has a solid pedigree with its relationship with the Other Brother. Unfortunately, York Road Kitchen is a complete disappointment at this time. Our group of 5 had issues with service, kitchen and the bar. Like the other reviewer mentioned, it was easily 10+ minutes before we were served our drinks. These were not especially diffiucult ones to concoct; beers and their nightly special. One of our parties food came way ahead of everyone else's. The server/computer/kitchen? Had thought her item was an appetizer. Our food came 30 minutes after ordering. The 3 steaks were all rare, not the medium rare we ordered. The steaks came with fries and potato chips, no vegetables at all. Thankfully, the kitchen recooked our steaks to medium rare and they were edible, not amazing, but satisfactory. We were going to order dessert, but the service was so slow that we figured we'd better off making dessert at home. All in all, nothing stood out about the restaurant. The service was extremely slow, the kitchen made critical mistakes, and we never felt confident that we were going to be wow'ed. In 6 months it would be worth a try again, but right now it's not worth your money. read more
