FYI: It's cash-only I don't know much about Guelph, but Eric The Baker is downtown, in this cute area, across the street from what looks like their City Hall. I can be wrong, but that's what the building looked like! The space itself is very, very small. Pre-Pandemic, they may only have space for 1 table of 2-4. Only 1 person is allowed inside to order. And when I visited, there was already 1 man ordering and a small line forming behind me. It seem like a very popular spot...and for good reason! The smell emanating from this bakery is about right...BUTTER. Really takes you back to any European city. Taste instantly transports you there too! Thank God this place is quite a distance from me. Eric is a takeout bakery (4 seats). I purchased the raspberry chocolate tarte and an espresso. They also had samples of brioche a la creme. All the food was excellent. The right level of sweetness. It is a great place to grab a coffee and croissant on your way to work, grab some pastries or bread. A gem! read more

Eric, Paula and their crew are amazing and the food is remarkable. The small space makes it a wonder that the variety of dishes and delights they serve are even possible. Most of the items on the menu I can't pronounce but they'll happily correct you in the friendliest way. It's nice to see a small business stay in such high demand and that's what happens when you have outstanding service and quality products. Truly a tiny gem and Guelph is lucky to have them. My brother and sister in law and kids recently put down roots here and am in town from Los Angles visiting and exploring and getting to know the town. Wandered in on a cold fall day and grabbed a delicious tea and mini savory pastry. Fantastic. Will definitely be back and can't wait to try the many other offerings. Everytime I visit Guelph, I try to go Eric the Baker. It's always amazingly busy no matter when you go. Sitting is limited so most people get takeout. We just love this cafe. The only thing I wasn't super fond of was the bourbon pecan tart, but I think it was just a strong bourbon taste for me, nothing to do with the quality of the pastry. I am so very happy that Eric the Baker opened here in Guelph! We first went within a few days of when he opened and it was already amazing. It has gotten even better since! I don't know where Eric trained, but he is clearly a master baker. You'll find the most delightful pastries, breads, pies, croissants (especially the almond stuff croissant), cookies, and more. You'll also find a delightful rotation of savory items, like sausage stuffed breads, quiche, carrot salads, chef salads, and more. And today I came in and got a hot chocolate for the first time - oh, it was so good. Eric is often the one working there, and he can tell you all about every item and how they are made. He is also very kind and lovely to speak with. You must go and buy some bakery and lunch foods from him! You must go right now! Eric is located on Carden, across from the warming room at the ice rink/splash pool. He has counter seating for a small number of people, and there is sometimes a short line to purchase items as the shop is small. The wait has never been long in my experience, and is more than worthwhile. There is a ramp instead of a threshold step, making the business more accessible to those using a wheelchair. At this time they only take cash. Although his prices are reasonable, bring a few extra bucks with you because you'll want to bring home as much bakery as you can! read more

As you walk in to this bakery on a summer day, two things hit you in the face. Overwhelming heat and the smell of buttery baked goodness. Eric the Baker is a very popular bakery in Guelph and so it is likely that you will find lineup whenever you visit. I can say with confidence that one of this bakery's signature foods is its sausage roll. For under $3.00, you get a sizeable chunk of sausage meat that is wrapped up in layers of flaky pastry. For myself, one is more than enough to get filled up. Ask any of the customers if they have tried the sausage roll; if you meet someone who has they will probably be telling you about how good it is. The chocolatine, which is essentially a chocolate croissant, is also to die for. It is so buttery and so flaky and just when I was thinking "Holy crap this tastes amazing" I (expectedly) bit into the warm chocolate. I finished it way too quick and was contemplating on a 2nd, but some momentary rational thinking led me to the decision to pace myself. Also served here is a croissants best friend, espresso. They make an small assortment of espresso/coffee based drinks to go along with your baked goods and from what it looks like, they do coffee well too. Its a real espresso machine, not a Keurig!! This bakery has truly become one of Guelph's food scene gems. You must visit here! read more

This time, she brought over desserts for our dinner party: Passion fruit Tart, Mille Feuille, Chocolate raspberry tart. Wow, out of this world delicious! If Eric was in my hometown I would be 10 lbs heavier! The passion fruit tart was my favourite-- such a perfect balance of sweet and tart, plus a textbook-perfect crust! This is a great bakery that has a French Baker and very good quality desserts, luncheons and my favourite, croissants. I've been many times and it's always busy and a top spot to go in downtown Guelph for baked goods. Everything I have had from here has been EXCELLENT. They are cash only, but if you walk through downtown Guelph just two blocks away, most of the major banks have a branch with ATMs. They're a fabulous non-chain local bakery, with efficient service and great food. My personal suggestions are the ham croque monsieur (essentially, a grilled cheese with the cheese on the outside of the bread), and the chocolate tarts (I prefer the ones with raspberry, though they also have a salted caramel version). read more
