Went for the first time to enjoy some pastries, my girlfriend used to get when she went to university in the area. Unfortunately we had a bad experience. You can barely hear the staff and when they come to you they seemed as if we had no time to look at which pastries we wanted. We spent roughly $40 on several items. Everything was put in a bag so all the delicate pastries and macarons were squished and did not make it home. I also grabbed a coffee which I couldn't even drink. read more

Pretty good but I've definitely had better. I ordered their tomato pepper pesto quiche and had this in store. Unfortunately when they warned it, it didn't go all the way through and the center was cold. It was still tasty but would have been better all warm. I ordered some pastries to go and I will say their chocolate almond croissants are really good! But kind of small. I also got the almond danish (which unfortunately was disappointing, the cheese and fruit didn't go well together), almond croissant (very good, slightly stale though), blueberry scone (forgettable, wouldn't get it again), and cheese and onion roll. Total for 6 pastries and the quiche was $28 which is to be expected at most of these bakeries. It was okay, but I don't think I'd come back, especially since I've had better for around the same price. read more

Very lovely little French bakery here in between Waterloo and Kitchener!! Enjoyed a coffee and some pastries! Quiet jazz playing was a good touch to the environment. It is nice and clean in the sitting portion and the whole place smells absolutely delightful! It's a great place to relax and read a book or magazine without the noise and chaos which other more well-known establishments have (Starbucks, Williams, Coffee Culture). Was super disappointed they didn't have WiFi; it is 2015 guys, come on. As an employee of a popular coffee establishment myself, WiFi is a must if you're serving coffee and treats - it's not difficult or expensive to provide WiFi (it might even keep customers coming back to the counter) Still 5/5 for an almost perfect experience. I'd like to preface this review by saying that a rating of 2 stars is based on service and service only. The food I had at this bakery was quite good, but the lady serving ruined my experience. I don't expect mile wide smiles everywhere I go - but at least neutrality is a must. I walked in with a friend. She ordered only tea and got a skeptical "is that all look". I got a tea, sandwich, and eclair. The eclair was heaven on earth. I would recommend their baked goods any day. The sandwich was OK. I asked to get it warmed up and mentioned I didn't like cold meat. When I got it at the table, my meat was cold. I walked up and politely asked to have it reheated. When I got it, it was burnt to a crisp. On top of that, the lady sarcastically asked me if the sandwich was *still* too cold, that I should bring it back again. That really irked me. She didn't have to say anything. She could have put it down and walked away. I was saddened by my overall experience. I recommend this place for taste only - or if you avoid getting the female server. read more

I did not have any of the issues with service that were mentioned in the other reviews--perhaps the owners responded by putting someone more personable in charge of liaising with the public? The food is delicious--I had a quiche of the day (caramelized onions and other goodies), and a crunchy salad (wheatberry, maybe?, with cranberries and other yummies). Really tasty, but a bit pricey for the serving size--especially given that you can go a few doors down to Vincenzo's and get a generous hot entree with side for the same price. It was enough for me, for lunch, but I am not a big eater (e.g. the Vincenzo's entree lasts me two meals, whereas this was entirely finished in the one meal, and while I was not still hungry, I could probably have eaten a little more than the serving size). The taste, however, was lovely. And the price isn't terribly exorbitant (~$7-8 for the lunch)--but I'm on a budget these days, so Vincenzo's usually wins out. Their cookies are delicious! The seating is very limited (3 tables for two, I think, and a few outside, in good weather), and there is no AC, so the inside seats might get a bit warm, of a sultry summer's day. I managed to snag some macarons here finally! With their new fall flavours, I bought all of them except the pear (I've never had a good pear macaron and at $2 per macaron, I'm not risking another let down). I bought the pistachio and bing cherry, raspberry, cassis, pumpkin spice, cappuccino, vanilla, and sea salt caramel. When I first spied them, I was pretty darn happy that I finally got to try them. Like all things in French bakeries, these were not cheap. The 6 moderate to mini sized macaron cost over $10. So was it worth it... ? Not really but it holds pretty good promise. With macaron, they're notoriously fussy to make. They depend on good technique to get that nice crispy meringue like crust while trying to prevent air bubbles in the cookie. The texture cannot be too gummy (undercooked) but slightly resembles a homemade just freshly made marshmallow (not gummy but soft chew without being cakey). I'll be upfront and say Sabletine has good technique. These macaron were well made. Nice smooth shells so that tells me they grounded the almonds very nicely. The crust was crispy and shattered perfectly under a bite. The texture was that nice perfect mild chew without being gummy or cakey. I was quite happy with this part of the macaron. As for flavour and size, this is where it was a bit of a letdown. Some of these macaron should be labeled as mini macaron (as they do in Bouchon bakery) and not charged full prices. They're that small! The flavours were not as good as the Chocolate Alphabet bakery in Oakville (which is the best one I've found so far west of Toronto). The pistachio and bing cherry was good... I really do love the slivers of bing cherry in the filling. That was very well done! The pistachio flavour was there but was very mild. I wish it to be a more pronounced. The raspberry macaron was just 'sweet' and barely had a berry taste. The cassis was wonderful. You really taste the black current and it wasn't overly sweet. The sea salt and caramel had a nice flavour ... Personally I found it on bit light since the caramel was in a butter cream filling. The best sea salt caramel I've had was a ganache base. Cappuccino held a surprise! It had an actual coffee bean in it. I wasn't expecting it so I didn't love it... It was an over whelming bitter coffee burst in an otherwise mild coffee flavored macaron. If it was smaller and chocolate covered, that would be great. The last macaron I had was pumpkin spice. I really liked this one but they should call it fall spiced or just cinnamon and nutmeg. There was no ginger taste at all. The flavour though did shine through nicely though. So about half of the macarons were very good (cassis, 'fall ' spice, and caramel) with the rest being decent. They have really good technique .. I just wish they're more consistent with their sizes and all of their flavours be as good as the cassis or fall spice. read more

I am definitely a fan of this place! It so cute, and makes Waterloo seem like a more wonderful place. I sat in and had lovely conversations while enjoying the big windows and the sunlight coming in I had their croissant which was quite delicious, but would have liked if it was heated - maybe i'll ask for next time. I also had the pecan tart, which was SO GOOD! I basically bit into it and was like WOOOOOOOOOW, so the entire thing was absolutely delicious, and i must recommend it. I also had a coffee which was yummy. Everyone complained about the staff, but I found them to be very friendly and they also brought our food to us. The girl was very friendly! I would love to one day sit in there and study, not sure if they have Wi-Fi! read more

A beautiful selection of pastries and desserts. I finally tried two chocolate concoctions (le ventoux and a new mint one) and they were good. Almond croissants (only available on weekends) are consistently good, but not the best I've had. They seem to have an increasing selection of other pastries. I've only bought one baguette and it was terrible, but they may be improving. I haven't tried any of the lunch selections, but the quiche always look great. Decent coffee. They now stock cheeses from Quebec. The proprietor is not the friendliest, but she provides the minimum service one would expect. Sablétine makes THE BEST macaroons in the region without a doubt. I go there at least once a week for my fix. The service however is slow as molasses. There's only ever one person servicing customers and she is in no hurry to do anything. The first time I went in I thought maybe she was blind and didn't see me because after she took forever with the person ahead of me, then turned around and busied herself with some random tasks on the back counter and left me standing there. Also the owner herself doesn't know how to pronounce the name of her bakery. Don't put an accent in the name if you're not going to pronounce the accent! read more

Consistently high-quality, French pastries. The almond croissants are better than the ones I had in Paris. The wafer thin chocolate chip cookies are perfect for making ice cream sandwiches. I go in to pick up four pastries and I always leave with a big, white pastry box full, with a little paper bag of extras. There are mini, bite-sized options to pair with a wheatberry salad or quiche, family sized cakes or pies, as well as an option for individual assorted cakes, squares, and more. read more

I came to Sabletine a month ago, and was so impressed that i had found a great lunch place that also serves up some of the best baked goods in the area. We were at the restaurant shortly after noon, and were debating between a few of their lunch items that were written on the chalkboard. After pondering for a few minutes, the counter girl informed us that since they had just served a party they were hosting, they had run out of everything, but a few tartines. I wasn't that bummed because i was going to order one anyways, but if you are out of something, it should not be written on the board. My tartine was excellent, the cheddar was super aged, the addition of the boccocini was masked though by the robust cheddar. I love how crusty the bread gets when they toast it, but near the end, my sandwich was slightly soggy. The macarons were better then the last time, we had cassis, strawberry, and salted caramel. The buttercream was fruity in the two, and the shells had that great chew. We ordered a chocolate chip cookie, this thing was massive, and it was on the verge of being burnt, they must bake it at a very high temp, but it was delicious. Now for the downside of the meal, i ordered a chocolate almond croissant, and it tasted more like a bun than a croissant, it was not flaky. Also, i didn't like the melted choc, and the frangipan, it was too wet. My sis had the regular croissant and she found the same issues with it as mine, it just wasn't flaky. Overall this still remains one of my go to places for lunch, just next time i would opt for more macarons instead of a croissant. read more

I have stopped by this place several times, as it is very near by condo. Every single time I've tried something new and have been incredibly pleased. The pastries are amazing and inventive. In particular, I've become somewhat addicted to their cookies, I just can't eat one. Their coffee is a great complement to their sweets. My only gripe is that their hours are somewhat limited. It would be nice to come down in the evening for coffee and dessert, but that isn't possible. read more

This place is honestly just really cute. The atmosphere is what really gets the 5 stars in my book. The staff speaks French, the pastries taste French, and the whole place is so quaint that it feels like a small patisserie in Paris. The desserts are top notch to boot. The butter croissant is pretty good. Their bite-sized macaron is decent, not too sweet and most of the fruity fillings are light (not a gooey texture). They have 8 different flavours now. The chocolate mint and vanilla-almond are impressive (or in another word, memorable that I don't forget what they taste like after 1 hour). The pistachio one is also nice. The lemon-blackberry and apricot-peach flavours balance the sweetness and tartness well too. read more

I just had the most incredibly divine meringue cookie (I saw cookie but it was enormous!) at Sabletine's. I have never been in there before but happened to be walking by. Everything looked amazing but this chocolate swirled meringue is going to my new guilty pleasure. It was crispy and fluffy and slightly moist in the middle... Out of this world. Great coffee too! I think the meringue is gluten free since it is essentially egg whites, sugar and chocolate so it is a slightly-less guilty pleasure than others I could name.:) read more

I ordered a wedding cake for my close friend's wedding. I ordered it last minute (a week to the wedding) and was told they could do one on the smaller side because of the time constraints which was fine by me as it was a small wedding. When I received the cake it was quite miniature. It looked like a toy cake. I measured and the top tier (it was a three tier cake was only about 3.5 inches across). The ribbon on the cake was a lot wider than I had requested (though the flowers on the cake were quite pretty). i was in a rush to get to the service so didn't make a big thing out of it. When we cut the cake at the reception about 75% of it was buttercream icing. There was barely any cake at all!!! I wasn't sure what they expected us to serve our guest. The little cake that there was was extremely dry and stiff. One of the guests actually asked us if we had gone with a "fried cake" (what the heck is a fried cake?!) All in all the cake was tiny and looked very mediocre and the actual sponge cake (I realized it was supposed to be sponge after calling in to complain) was really horrible to eat. Needless to say my wedding cake isn't coming from them. read more

Got the broche and the opera. The broche was just alright, didn't really have a distinct taste, but the opera was really good. Haven't tried the coffee here or ate in, so I have nothing to add there. We tried a chocolate chunk cookie (probably the best cookie out there), a chocolate croissant (so buttery and flaky but barely any chocolate inside), the creme brûlée tart (light with the right amount of sweet but not much of a brûlée finish), le ventoux (ideal chocolate richness), and the noisette (pleasantly surprised). read more

Had a lovely Sunday visit with my sister. We shared a scone, a slice of apple gallette and an apple strudel. All were quite nice. We also enjoyed the illy coffee - smooth and delicious. I had an americano, my sister a regular coffee. The eating area was pleasant. Bright and sunny with a few tables and seating along the window. There was another room with one large table. We lucked out and had that room to ourselves. Which was terrific because it was quiet, we both have trouble hearing in restaurants. Nice service, our order was brought to us. We will definitely be back. Perhaps the soup and quiche next time. read more

French in every way, including service. The pastries are to die for, the service not so much. I was brought coffee and cream with no teaspoon, and not the almond croissant I had asked for, but I will keep going back Saturday mornings for the perfect croissants.
