Been hearing about their fantastic Tiramisu for a while and finally got the chance to try it out. I don't usually go to downtown Kitchener very often and this trip totally did not disappoint. Environment: The cafe is located a little bit west of the Charles Terminal, probably around 20mins walk, but the 7 bus stop is right in front of the store. I immediately saw the array of cakes and other bakery items upon walking in the door. The atmosphere at the bakery was great, suitable for sitting down and grabbing some coffee and treats with friends. There doesn't seem to be many students visiting due to the distance from schools, so it's more of a local favourite. Food: I got their signature Tiramisu, which was $3.10, pretty decent price in my opinion. My friend got the cheesecake which I believe was $3.50. The portions of the cakes were pretty big too. The Tiramisu definitely lived up to my expectation, and I especially loved how smooth and flavourful the mousse part was. On a Saturday afternoon we reached around 3:50pm and barely realized it was almost closing time. However they were very accommodative and did take the order. Pretty much most of the desserts were over so we just got a big coconut ring and latte/mocha. Coconut ring was fresh and slightly crispy - perfectly sweet and coconut flavors. Latte and mocha was very good as well. Mocha tasted awesome since I believe it had been months I tried my favorite drink at a local cafe. They have now opened the outdoor seating. Highly recommend!! So I was just going the farmers market and saw this place. It wasn't on yelp, so of course I had to add it. It was really late in the day, so the place was empty. I walked to browse and took some pictures of the product that I've uploaded. They have a decent variety, specially given the location. The server was super helpful and took her time to explain all the different deserts. Unfortunately the deserts were nothing special. Here's the story: So I've had a pretty shitty day so I decide to drown my sorrows with some yummy custard tarts from Nova Era. They are great there and the only reason I go there. It's late so I know there is a chance they are sold out but figure it's worth a shot. I get there, scan the show case and notice there are 4 left. I wanted to grab 6 but 4 will do. There is a couple in front of my taking their time in deciding what to get. No problem, I wait patiently. I understand choosing a dessert is serious business. They finally place their order and take a seat. The staff member continues to complete their order while I stand waiting. Other staff scurry by, none actually acknowledge me. Whatever, I just wait. After all they have customers who can before me and should be served first. So another woman rushed in, shouts out to one of the staff as they walk by "Do you have tarts left". Staff responds that there are 4 left after checking in the back to see there are more. This woman even STEPPED IN FRONT OF ME. I say nothing but finally give her the dirty side eye. That's when she says "Oh, you waiting to order?" I said yes, I'm here for the tarts. But she clearly didn't hear me. Finally, I am served and clearly state I want the last 4 tarts. The first staff member who ignored me, makes a snarky remark to a fellow staff member, who just shrugged and said, "She was here first" and the rude woman behind me leaves. My issue is with the first staff member who ignored me while I stood patiently waiting for my turn then had the audacity to make a comment, right where I could see her. Would it have been so hard to say, "I'll be with you in a moment " just to acknowledge my presence? And for the record, I did nothing wrong by taking the last 4 tarts. Do I have to storm in and talk over everyone else ahead of me to get respectable service like the rude woman behind me? I stood there for almost 10 minutes and as a reward for my patience i get a snarky side remark? I love this bakery, but this staff member needs to be spoken to. You may not know but Nova Era is a pretty popular chain of rustic Portuguese bakeries in the west end of downtown Toronto. So it was quite a surprise to find this place in Kitchener (even though I had lived in great little town for a year a few years back). This place really reminds me of the many bakeries I visited during my trip in Portugal. Rustic, raw and homey. The pastries are no works of art and neither are they photogenic. Unlike the French stuff you can Instagram this stuff (although probably won't) and afford it too. First and foremost, I must admit that sugar does not run in my blood but truth be told that the tarts are absolutely delicious! In fact I might even say they rival some of the best from Portugal; most notably the infamous ones from Pasteis de Belem -- okay it might be a little bit of a stretch but a close one nonetheless. As for the other custard pastries, they too are delicious. The breads are okay at best but I wouldn't say they can run with the best of them. I like their cream filled donut but honestly the last two times I've gone there were always flies INSIDE the display where all the desserts are kept. Delicious desserts, bread and other baked goods. The coffee tastes like they only used three beans for the whole pot however. Its basically hot water, even the hot chocolate lacks its chocolate flavor. All I could really taste was cream and mild sugar. Beverages make this place loose stars hard. read more

They have many options to choose from and the custard tart is freshly baked. When I had a bite, it was quite hot. However, the custard filling was way too sweet. Over the years, each and every time I have gone in to this bakery, I leave feeling sorry I did. The staff is the unfriendliest bunch of girls. I don't know who does the hiring, but it feels as though you owe these girls something when you are paying at the counter. If it is indeed tips they are waiting on, given their attitude, they would need to wait forever before I drop any coins their way. Besides, I don't think it's customary to tip when paying the cashier for the bread you just bagged for yourself. Asking any question elicits eyeball rolling and exasperated sighs. One is made to feel they are bothering the staff by coming in to pay for anything, whether they have a question or not. I always leave feeling mistreated and today in this review I vow to never go back. It's not worth it. I don't need to be put in a bad mood after a long hard day. These employees need to be given lessons in etiquette and grace. Above all they should be pleasant and courteous to their customers regardless. If they don't like that you ask a question, or that you reply 'yes' when asked if you would like your receipt, or whatever the case may be, they should at least attempt to keep their overt and insulting expressions to themselves and practise putting their best face and manners forward. Extremely immature staff. The food is not good enough to put up with being mistreated in this way. The place has a nice ambiance and all the desserts and food looks good, BUT compared to the other Nova Era bakeries I've been to in other cities, the food/drinks at this one is sorely lacking. The coffee was quite watery, the brownie we had was meh and the Portuguese beef patties were underdone. All in all, I'd save your money and take a pass on this particular Nova Era spot. read more
