I ate there 3 times in 2 days - twice for breakfast and once for a group dinner. The servers are more busy talking to one another than taking care of customers. We've been to proof many times for brunch and love it. We recently went for dinner and had a really nice meal. Friendly, attentive service, delicious cocktails and a good wine list, and great food with huge portions. We ate on the patio which was comfortable and clean. It is right next to Erb street however, so you may get disrupted by the occasional noisy driver. read more

Proof is a restaurant that is on the ground floor of the Delta Waterloo hotel. I typically wait until I am done staying at a hotel to rate both it and the hotel restaurant that I tend to frequent regularly. However, I'll break this cycle seeing that I have one more visit left. This Delta does not have lounge access for gold and platinum elite members. Instead, you get a voucher a day towards the breakfast buffet. It includes your choice of coffee, tea, or juice. The buffet alone is $20 a person. I am a guest at this hotel for nine nights. Getting roughly $200 for breakfast for free is pretty good. I missed breakfast one morning due to fasting for bloodwork. If you don't use your voucher, you can ask the frontdesk staff to comp you in reward points, which is 750 points per voucher. The breakfast buffet is consistent. You have both hot and cold items. After a few days, they become predictable, except for the chef's special. It changes every day, which has saved my tastebuds. They range from sausage sliders on bagels to French toast stuffed with berries. Do the chef's special. Each one was delicious. The scrambled eggs, bacon, pork sausage, turkey sausage, and hashbrowns are the main hot item staples. You can change them up so you don't go insane. I never did cereal, mainly because there weren't any lactose-free milk options. There was also a waffle maker, and a decent selection of muffins and croissants. I decided to give steel oats a try one morning. It was pretty good when you add toasted pumpkin seeds and granola on top. The servers have been great and attentive. Two stand out, as they immediately recognized me as the guest who has all these breakfast vouchers. This morning, one of them asked me how I had slept last night. It was thoughtful of her. One older server confused me one morning. I gave her the voucher and she thanked me for my loyalty. Five minutes later, she asked if I would be charging the bill to my room. Nope. She then asked if I was paying by cash. Nope. I finally had to say that she took my voucher from me. It wasn't even a particularly busy morning! The best part of Proof, besides the fact that it's not crazy busy at 8:45 am, is that there is a problem-of-the-week on the blackboard. It's a math problem. This math minor loved it, which explains why this restaurant is called Proof. The interior is relaxed and nice. I never did lunch or dinner. Perhaps when it's winter and I don't feel like leaving the hotel, I'll give it a try. I recommend if you are a Marriott gold or platinum member to enjoy the breakfast buffet here. More higher end restaurant than what students are used at around the campus, reflected by the nicer ambiance, higher meal price tags, and the generally older crowd. We got reservation for 8 on a Friday night and were promptly seated when we arrived. I noticed that the place had a really nice vibe and is certainly what you would expect from a restaurant located at the newly built Delta hotel. The decor was nice and modern and you can tell they spent a lot in the furniture, tables, and cutleries. I noticed that even though they claimed to be a Canadian restaurant, a good chuck of their menu featured Asian cuisine, such as Peking Duck, which was kind of weird. Most of the main dishes are around $20 each, appetizers above $10, and even the desserts are $10. I ordered their signature burger and it was pretty good, greasy but also really juicy, definitely better than a lot of places. I skipped out on the appetizers and desserts while some of my friends got them, and it seemed that the portions are super tiny and it's definitely not worth the $10+ price tag. Even though the place wasn't crowded at all for a Friday night, I felt that the servers didn't really pay attention to us very much, probably because we were students. We went to Proof for breakfast (actually brunch) after staying overnight at the Delta and having some vouchers to redeem. What a beautiful space and delicious food! We made it just in time for brunch, which starts at 10:00am on the weekends, and includes a different menu than the breakfast menu. All of the options looked amazing and I was pleasantly surprised by how many vegetarian options there were! We were even given some complimentary blueberry scones with butter and jam while we waited. I went with the rancheros, which were presented beautifully and super delicious. They were full of flavor! I'm not used to this level of excellence when getting the next-day hotel breakfast so it was an amazing experience all around. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you're staying at the Delta! They're open for all meals too, so I imagine that late-night dinner and cocktails would be just as amazing! read more

2nd time here and it's still absolutely amazing! I originally had a reservation for a table on the patio and got a call from the restaurant warning me that it was cold and windy and was luckily able to relocate inside. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff who were attentive and were able to recommend the best dishes! I personally really enjoyed the Cappelletti (really good cheese and seafood flavour and was rich but I didn't find it overly rich). Beef Carpaccio is a classic here (I don't eat beef but my tablemate really enjoyed it) The chocolate ganache was surprisingly smooth! I'm usually not a fan but this one wasn't as grainy or chunky as other ones that I've tried (very rich but if you're a big chocolate fan then this is for you). Cheesecake mousse was a nice, lighter version of a cheesecake (nice mix of richness and fruitiness). Pink sapphire cocktail was a bit disappointing, came in a mug instead of a nice glass and didn't taste the best. Grilled calamari was what I expected (not bad, not amazing). Pan seared duck breast was a bit too chewy. Overall amazing experience! Their patio seating is tented, tarped and heated so even though I moved inside, I don't think eating outside would've been too bad (even though it is Winter). read more

Came here with my boyfriend and loved the ambiance of the place. There were amazing options we both really wanted to try, and ended up getting the tacos for apps, rose pasta and the veg burger, then got the mousse dessert. It was all amazing! Had breakfast here once while staying at the Delta. The restaurant is huge - with a bar area towards the front, and several rows of seating towards the back. There are private dining rooms for larger groups or events. There is also a patio area for those nicer summer days. The decor is modern and fresh, complimenting well with the hotel decor. My friend and I arrived toward the end of breakfast on a weekday, but was still able to order breakfast. She had the pancakes, I had the eggs benedict. Food came in reasonable time. The portions were huge. Both the pancakes and the benedict were delicious. I absolutely loved their potatoes. The service was fantastic. Our waitress was very attentive and let us know about the timing of our food arrival, and other disruptions in the restaurant. For example they were changing setup for lunch which involved moving some chairs, and she let us know there would be some noise. It is a bit pricey though, so definitely not very student friendly, but honestly I prefer it since it kept the ambience more classy and quiet. I would recommend it if you prefer a higher end dining experience, and definitely try it if you're staying at the hotel. read more

I went to the Proof restaurant on Thanksgiving Day. The food was very good. I myself got the burger with the double smoked bacon and it was excellent. I got a taste of the turkey special and it was also nicely done. My teenager got the Peking Duck and absolutely devoured it. The thrice-cooked fries are probably my favourite, which feels a bit silly, but they were so good! Also, the service was attentive, but not TOO attentive -- a good balance. The decor was high quality and if I lived nearby I could see hitting the restaurant's bar now and again. Finally, the prices here feel a touch too high, but it's in a hotel so I suppose it's to be expected. read more

I've tried their dinner menu many times from ordering room service during my stay at the Delta. There's something about their fries that I really like, although their fries aren't actually the best (I think I like the herbs/spices that are used). Today, 3 friends and I came here for their brunch and we actually sat down at the restaurant. Walking in, I really enjoyed the ambiance. We ordered: 1. Good Choices: two poached eggs, buttermilk corn waffle, dinosaur kale, sauté onions, applewood smoked bacon, breakfast link sausage, maple bourbon bbq sauce - 2 of us ordered this dish. The quality of the poached eggs was very inconsistent. My friend's egg yolks were still runny, whereas mine were over cooked. The kale + onions were mixed together and I found that part a bit too salty.. The sausage and waffles were average. Bacon normally isn't my favourite but I'd say it was what I liked the most out of everything. 2. Dreams of Montreal: Citrus tea cured Coho salmon, herring and caper potato salad, soft boiled egg, mini Montreal bagels 3. Breakfast Burger: Norwich County beef, smoked cheddar, peameal bacon, poached egg, Hollandaise, house baked milk bun, thrice cooked frites - Loaded burger.. will definitely fill your empty stomach. It came with a choice of salad or fries as the side. The burger (even the buns) looked a little greasy, but overall a good meal if you prefer something heavier. Almost forgot to mention that we were a bit disappointed with their service.. our server did not appear friendly or approachable at all. We often felt ignored when trying to ask for things. I ordered the lamb burger and it was a big juicy patty, with a side of fries or the Norfolk Greens salad. I am not sure why it's labelled as a Canadian restaurant since most of the food is from Asian cuisines. To be honest it's one of the worst and most overpriced dinners I have ever had in Waterloo. A drink, an appetizer, two main courses and two desserts cost me about $140 in total. If they were worth it, I wouldn't mind, but their food was just average at best. We had tuna tatami and green curry. The tuna tatami is simply topped with a pan fried tuna steak and very salty soy sauce on the rice. My friend's green curry was just like any stirred-fried Indonesian curry in any of the other Asian fast food restaurants. The selection and the taste of desserts were not impressive either. I had certain expectation of the quality of Delta's restaurant based on other restaurants in this range but was left disappointed. read more

We appreciated that the staff seemed to take extra precautions for allergy situation and when I told them that I am a Celiac, they demonstrated knowing how to handle their side of things. Really liked this place! My antioxidant salad and dulce de leche cheesecake were both good, but the real highlight was my papardelle with shrimp, double smoked bacon, oyster mushrooms, kale, and lemon ricotta. The pasta was freshly made (I don't know this for sure, but if it's not you could have fooled me!) and the flavours were fantastic! Don't know what the other two people are taking about because we just went for my boyfriend's birthday and the food was great and the drinks were great and the service was great! We had one of the burgers, the grilled cheese, oyster pasta, and the shared st Jacobs platter. The meat ball and burrata thing on the shared platter was super good. The calamari and wings were average but good enough. The guys ordered the Jpm (the mixed whiskey drink) and they both loved it and one girl got a sangria and it was beautifully presented and tasted good! Some also for the fancy coffees at the end and it's also intense but good. The server was very pleasant and knew the food well and also knew about the architect of the restaurant (inspired by the design or another architect for the Perimeter Institute). And when we asked about the "ADA" drink (was it named after the programmer or program) she even went to find the answer for us. Definitely coming back and recommend! read more

I had found Proof on Yelp and had considered going there for a while. I finally went last night and was surprised to find that it's the restaurant at the bottom of the Delta! Knowing that it's a hotel restaurant, I was expecting it to be more expensive. The menu has been updated since I had first found Proof on Yelp, but it's quite good. My only major complaint was the service time. A group of two sitting beside me and my boyfriend got their food much faster than we did which I did not like because we were both groups of two and ordered almost identical dishes (the appetizer and one entree were the same). read more

i have been to proof many times over the past few years. This time i got really disappointed. The reception wasn't pay attention when i tell her i have a reservation. The appetizer was served without any representation, everything was mashed together. The lamb i ordered was extreme salty, i almost felt like someone knocked the whole bottle of salt into my dish. And almost 1/3 of the lambs are fat. The drink also came with more than half a bottle ice inside. Probably won't come again read more

This place is somewhat hard to find at night, but it's part of the Delta hotel! Very modern decor and environment, it feels like an upscale lounge. The staff is a bit in experienced, our server was very awkward and interrupted our conversations a lot. The food was pricey and it was on par with your other american food chains. The environment was very warm and welcoming, it felt very exquisite. I had the daily burger special which was $16.95 and it was a breaded chicken burger with aioli mayo, slice carrots and red onions with avocados. They also put this sauce that was tangy and sweet and I thought it clashed with the already flavourful, salty mayo. The tangy sauce also brought emphasized flavours of the vegetable which didn't go well with the rest of the burger. All in all, the burger was probably average because of this clash of flavours. Though it was one of the better chicken burgers I've had because of the creativity of selection of ingredients. It also has this romantic feel depending where you sit because some parts of the restaurant are a lot dimmer than other parts. read more

Our server Mathew was very attentive and no one's glass was empty at any point. Food is less than mediocre, drinks are okay, service is good. I came here for dinner on a Monday and the restaurant was quite busy, but we were seated immediately. I decided to try one of their specialty drinks- I believe it was the spiced apple (but the French translation for it). It was incredibly unenjoyable.. too "spiced, it tasted like I was drinking straight cinnamon and cloves. Thankfully, our server was more than accommodating and took the drink back, took it off our bill, and replaced it with a mojito. I got the seafood arrabbiata which is supposed to be served with a spicy tomato sauce but there was literally zero spice in it at all. I even considered adding salt to it which isn't something I do often. The seafood was overcooked. My friend got the calamari which looked decent but apparently was underwhelming. He also got the bulleit proof, which was too smokey and unpleasant. All in all I would recommend one of the other many restaurants in the area over Proof. read more

This is decent but only slightly above a Milestone or Moxies restaurant. Food: 1. Carbonara flat bread: meh... Reminded me nothing of a carbonara 2. Beef cheek oranchini : good sauce, good taste little meat but it's was good 3. Chicken supreme: moist and perfectly chard crust. My husband really enjoyed it 4. Burger : both of my friends ordered this and loved it. They absolutely loved it 5. "Tenderloin steak": ordered tenderloin for $29 plus the shrimp and fingering potatoes. Decent but they brought me the side trimming of a sirloin steak which isn't even on the menu and they didn't even adjust the price. I told the waitress I was very hungry and that I would eat it. However, I expect at least an apology and I would think it fair that you reduce the cost of my steak plate because it's a cut of steak your restaurant doesn't even offer!!! I feel offended that they would think so little of their customers. Service: Unrefined and just plain bad. hostess too timid to tell you the table is ready. Waitress: appeared confused and afraid of questions regarding the beer selection. Seemed uncomfortable like it was her first day or just plainly lacking basic knowledge. Came here for my birthday last Tuesday and I really enjoyed it! My boyfriend and I had the Together Tuesday menu which was a shared appetizer (Beef Carpaccio) , two main entrees (Grilled Atlantic Salmon and 8 oz steak), and a dessert (a very interesting cheesecake)! The place is very cozy and relaxing, and the food was really yummy! It tasted very fresh and healthy. Our waiter was also very accommodating as she was very helpful in helping us pick our drinks! Great food. Very nice server. Somewhat loud environment, but nice, warm decor. We had a draft beer and cocktail (the stiff upper lip), neither of which we were huge fans of. But...we really liked our food! I had the entree size caesar salad with the addition of korean spare ribs - delicious! My friend had the daily burger which was a take on a sushi dynamite roll and had a well cooked burger with a sriracha/soy tasting glaze with snow crab and tempura flakes - definitely a winner. An upscale environment with delicious food and amazing service! I went to Proof for the first time with my friends, all students in the area, to celebrate a 22nd birthday and our server Jeanine truly made the experience worthwhile :) she waited for one member of our party to arrive late, gave us several knowledgeable drink and food suggestions (we asked a lot of questions!), brought our birthday girl a special dessert that wasn't on the menu, and even brought us a second desert for free when we pointed out the deconstructed cheesecake didn't have as much graham cracker as we expected. She handled our large group of 8 extremely well, was very friendly/funny, and split the bills exactly as we asked (with several shared desserts and the birthday girl's bill shared among everyone). Plus, our food (though on the expensive side) was incredible and, to our pleasant surprise, so much of it was gluten free and vegan! I highly recommend the "Best in Show" (photo below) as it was likely the most decadent dessert I've ever had. So happy we chose Proof for our special occasion! read more

The only edible place in Waterloo. For most city dwellers who are accustomed to worldly great food, Waterloo is not the best town for that. Proof is attached to the Marriott and while it's not the upscale quality of something found in NYC or San Francisco it's fantastic compared to the town's other options. Modern clean interior, interesting dishes with fresh ingredients and servers who are actually Canadian, friendly and helpful. I'm staying in Waterloo for 3 days I won't eat anywhere else. Not only is their wait staff knowledgeable and friendly (even the guy that filled our water glasses was able to make excellent wine recommendations), and their food delicious, but their admin staff is great as well.
