Sweet Butcher Pizza - This pizza was decent. Dough was good, it was more the neapolitan style pizza with a thin bottom and thick crust. The choices of proteins offered different flavours in each bite and was enhanced by the honey. Nice to try, but would probably try another pizza next time. Tiger Shrimp Spaghettini - Would recommend! The spaghettini was cooked to the perfect texture! The sauce was absolutely amazing and went well with the pasta. Delicious food! The home of the only pasta dish I've enjoyed eating in the last few years (yes, I am not a big pasta fan). The menu is extensive and there is something for everyone. I ended up getting The Mercer pizza ($22.95) for myself, which tasted great but was probably better off shared since it was way too big for me. My coworkers both got a pasta, and the one I am referring to above is the Tiger Shrimp Spaghettini ($26.95) - SO AMAZING! We also tried three desserts, and my favourite was by far the carrot cake. I basically inhaled the whole thing myself. The service was a bit hot and cold - certain parts of it were off the charts accommodating, while at other times it was difficult to get anyone to look our way. We were in a bit of a rush because we were commuting back to Toronto that night and didn't want to leave too late. But on the other hand, when my coworker asked about whether the Spaghettini was meant to be spicy (she added spicy sausage which resulted in this), the waitress graciously made her a half portion to take home that had no spice. We started off with the cheese and spinach dip which was pretty good and I would order it again. The mains are lacklustre and not worth the money. We both got burgers, (Bauer and Blue Cheese burger) and the bun got soggy too fast and was severely underwhelming. Lastly, the winter mojitos might've been the best thing we got. I've been living in Kitchener for years now and have always heard good things about Bauer Kitchen. I decided to try their brunch today, and now I'm so sorry I didn't eat here sooner! The restaurant is a really beautiful space near Vincenzo's grocery store. Parking is free just FYI. It was a very warm Saturday, and the patio was almost full. The bright yellow umbrellas offered shade from the sun. I'm not an outdoor eater...don't enjoy heat or bugs, but if you like that kind of thing, their patio is a wonderful spot. The inside has dark tones to the decor and if I had to give it a name it was industrial chic. They used rebar (I think that is what it's called) as decor and there were gold tones to offset the dark furniture and black beams in the ceiling. The space is beautiful and clean and has a luxurious feel without being too stuffy. Thankfully, the country music playing was switched to some more upbeat tunes (which I know is personal preference). The hostesses were very polite and professional. I was seated right away (but got the standard question of do you want to sit at the bar since you're dining alone. I wish that would change. No, I want a table like anyone else and my RA usually makes the bar seating extremely uncomfortable. I just wish I wouldn't get asked that EVERY time I go out to eat). Anyone who reads my reviews knows I'm gluten free due to the RA. Bauer Kitchen has an amazing selection for GF diners. I hate to go out and be limited to meat and salad. You can get eggs benedict even. The GF choices are clearly marked on the menu, another thing I love because you don't have to guess whether the dish might contain gluten. They also have feature mimosas on the weekend for brunch. I ordered one that had their house rose and lemon. It was really good. Jenna was my server. She was so friendly and asked a few questions about what I was doing that day and held a bit of friendly conversation. Those are the best servers; they don't just go through the motions but try to get to know their customers for those few moments during your dining experience. She even double-checked on the GF aspects of the dish to make sure it worked for me. I ordered the Huevos rancheros bowl. Delicious. It had just the right amount of heat, the beans and chicken were so flavourful and the texture of the dish was perfect with the deep fried tortilla and the avocado was delicious! Sunny side egg on top was cooked perfectly too. Jenna even offered some fresh ground pepper. She was perfect. Knew just the right times to visit the table and take care of everything. The only thing that would make this dish more perfect would be a bit of lime crema to cool that heat a touch. But it was incredible the way it was served and a dish I definitely want to return to order again. If you want to treat yourself on the weekend to a brunch with top quality ingredients and dietary offerings for everyone, I encourage you to visit Bauer Kitchen. We had an amazing dining experience last night at the Bauer Kitchen! Not only was the service impeccable - Luke was our server and he was amazing --the food was also incredible! My husband enjoyed the hangar steak, with bone marrow as an appetizer and I had the chicken sandwich, with the mushrooms as a starter. I also had a great cocktail, with rose petals as a garnish. The waitress was very attentive and quick to help ensure we all had drinks at the ready and very knowledgeable and encouraging about the food selections. I did a quick Yelp search for eateries around the hotel and found The Bauer Kitchen. I flagged it and headed over there for brunch on a soggy, rainy Sunday afternoon. The restaurant is in uptown Waterloo. There is a parking lot next door where you need to pay. I did the cheaper method and parked on John Street West (two hours of free parking Monday through Saturday, but it didn't matter on a Sunday) and walked over with an umbrella. I actually entered through the bakery and cafe. I was in heaven! The nutter butter cookie and key lime tart caught my attention. I asked the nice woman at the desk where to go. The front door is on the other side, but it's nice that the restaurant and bakery are together. Yes, I'm a tourist. I headed over to get seated and got a nice table by the window. The brunch menu is available until 3 pm. It was around 1:30 pm when I was there. I got the brunch special, which was apple vanilla pancakes, with house-made apple compote, side order of smoked bacon, and maple syrup. This brunch feature comes with fresh whipped cream, but I have never been a fan of whipped cream. I had a craving for it years ago for a couple of days. I can't explain why other than I deviated from my norm. I also got a diet Coke. There is a gorgeous bar smack in the middle of the restaurant. There is also an equally gorgeous wine display at the back. I had to take a photo as I headed over to the washroom, which made the bartender smile. It was rather busy when I was there. I'd say about ten minutes later, my food came. I was happy. Although it doesn't look like a ton of food when you first look at everything, I was stuffed. The pancakes were yummy and buttery. They were fabulous. The maple syrup seemed like the place was being frugal and somehow predicted that a shortage was approaching Canada. However, the homemade apple compote had enough sweetness that it was a good substitute for the gallons of maple syrup that I typically use to drown my pancakes. Fantastic! The smoked bacon was delicious. The slices were thick and the smokiness was perfect. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. My server was delightful. She checked up on me several times during my stay. Debit and credit cards, as well as cash, are accepted. I paid using a debit card and all was good. The menu has lobster rolls! I went for the brunch menu which is available EVERY Saturday and Sunday between 10 - 3. They even have a bakery attached to the restaurant which smells AMAZING from their fresh croissants, coffees, and banana breads. During our brunch, we got a classic Chicken and Waffles which is your CRISY buttermilk fried chicken, with cheddar waffles. Came here based on Yelp, taking an Uber to make a special trip here the weekend of 8/9/19. Two things occurred that were not the fault of Bauer but perhaps tainted our experience: first, the Uber driver upon figuring out we are Americans took us the long route and visibly overrode the GPS directions. My son and I were both running GPS and were wondering if this was going to end in our murders ... we did get dropped off but Uber added a surcharge for the long trip. Not. We filed a complaint with Uber and they only reimbursed us to the original fare. We promised to not use Uber again until we had to just recently. Second issue was a super loud street band playing music right outside of the outdoor patio where we wanted to sit. No one else was out there either. So loud we could hear them inside from our table. Bauer should have kicked them out, except maybe they could not because they were technically in the alley/street. Inside is very nice. Service very good. Booze very good: collective arts, side launch and for my wife, two mango chamoy punches. My son and I both had Bauer power bowls, my wife a steak bowl and nachos to split. All very good. Prices seem a little high, converting Canadian to US currency. So back to how this visit started out and the issues with Uber and the street band, combined with the higher prices. The décor and atmosphere at this restaurant is really beautiful! It's located right beside Vincenzos which you can easily access with the ION. I got the Bauer Burger (smoked bacon, cheddar, tomato jam, iceberg lettuce, roasted garlic aïoli) which came with a side of fries and a pickle. I thought the burger was DELICIOUS! The portions for both the burger and fries were plentiful and worth the ~$20 price tag that comes with it. The service was prompt and friendly, and our server was attentive to our table. Had another great lunch recently at the Bauer Kitchen. I really want to try the sandwiches on their lunch menu, but I'm never able to because the daily feature sandwich always wins me over. This time, I had a slow-roasted pulled pork sandwich with bbq sauce, coleslaw on a house-made cheddar ciabatta. It was extremely filling and delicious! The meat was tender and succulent, perfectly complemented by crunchy coleslaw. I'd eat this sandwich everyday! My mother had another lunch daily special- the fish and chips. I'm so happy that they let us substitute regular fries for sweet potato frites with no surcharge! The accompanying lemon tartar sauce was rather lackluster, but all in all, it was still really tasty and satisfying. What a great place for lunch! Their daily special/recommended is always different. And could be gone pretty fast. I wasn't able to order their special for the day since I was there at 12:30 and sort of a late brunch. I ordered its brewed house coffee (free refill) and egg Benedict for brunch on a Saturday. Its potatoes tasted really good with ketchup. My eggs on the egg Benedict were a bit over cooked. First, I want to give a big shout out Jody (the owner of Bauer Kitchen), for reaching out to me. This means a lot as it shows that he cares not only about the quality of food but also about the experience of the customer, so I decided to give this restaurant another try for lunch! Now onto the food! My comments and review of the food: Calamari (3/5) - I am with my manager on this one. The calamari were just 'okay' - not great and not bad. Not much to say about it to be honest. Livewell Daily Special Salmon (4/5) - I thought that the salmon was cooked very well. Nice char on the outside and moist on the inside. The coconut rice and sauteed vegetables underneath were a very nice touch. I definitely enjoyed this refreshing dish, but it just lacked that "wow" factor for me to give it a 5 star. My manager's comments and review of the food: Calamari (3/5) - he thought the fried calamari was mediocre. "The dipping sauce was nice, but the calamari lacked substance and flavor." Zatar Crusted Ahi Tuna (3.5/5) - he enjoyed the tuna and thought it was very well cooked (4/5). However, the salad underneath the tuna was very disappointing (2.5/5). I don't think he finished the vegetables... A recommendation would be to pair the tuna with something else that will elevate the tuna and put it in the spotlight - for example a risotto. Overall, the food at Bauer Kitchen is a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars. It was definitely more enjoyable than my previous experience, but not a place that I would be keen on trying if I am in town. Came here on a quite Saturday morning for brunch. I was greeted by a waiter who knows the restaurant dishes down to the tiniest detail. He was extremely helpful with the dish selection and really cared about the customers. I got the chicken waffles and the steak and eggs. When the dishes came it was plated nicely and presented well. The chicken was a bit dry and slightly over fried, but the waffles were perfect. On the other hand the steak and eggs were done perfectly. I loved the bacon bits that came with the home fries on the steak and eggs. Overall a very pleasant experience both from the service and the food. read more
