I had supper this evening at McCabe's Irish Pub & Grill. I ordered Curried Chicken Pie with basmati rice as my side and it was good. The sauce was tasty and the pie was hearty with chicken, potatoes and carrots. Because it was puffed pastry, I expected it to be more light and flaky, though. In places, it was hard and chewy ... I have been coming here for years since I moved to town. They have good burgers and a solid variety of beers. Even a few poutines! :D However, I will not be returning to this particular location of McCabe's. Rude service and attitudes and insulting behavior. McCabe's has other locations in Guelph and London which I will continue to give my business to when I am in the area and there are several other local options in downtown kitchener, but I will no longer be supporting this location. read more

We were looking for a place with good poutine and McCabe's did not disappoint. We had the one with the Guinness and HP sauce gravy. The whole family loved it. Even the 18 month old The beef pie was amazing. A wonderful combination of flavor and texture. Perhaps a little too much gravy, but man it tasted great. Same with the mushroom tarragon soup. My wife commented it tastes so good because its made fresh on site. The portions on the kids meals were generous. Two of the three kids ate all of their pasta and were raving about it that evening. Our server was friendly, patient with our three dawdling kids and frequently checked in to see how we were doing. The restaurant itself looked like the standard pub style. I really liked the lounge area with the couches, and the washrooms were quite clean. We are definitely planning another trip to KW soon for another round of poutine and Irish fare. read more

Exec. Summary: Decently interesting food tarnished by crappy beer selection. McCabe's is an "Irish" pub in much the same way I'm a "Scottish" Canadian... which is to say, not at all. That aside, I was pleasantly surprised to when I arrived to see some interesting food choices on the menu. The burgers, especially, were pretty creative - I had a Japanese inspired tofu burger with wasabi mayo - it was quite good. Throw in delicious sweet-potato fries and large portions, and you got yourself some great pub-fare. Where McCabe's falls down, though, is on the beer selection. They have something along the lines of 18 taps and of those 18 maybe 1 or 2 are even mildly interesting beers. I mean, really... do you need to have Canadian, Bud, Bud Light, *AND* Coors all on tap... surely drinkers of any one of those swills will accept another of them and hardly notice the difference, no? The rest of the beer selection was equally underwhelming 'mid level' beers (Keith's, Creemore, Moosehead...etc...). I'm pretty sure there are some interesting microbrews in the KW area, but you wouldn't know that from a night at McCabe's... read more

I visited McCabe's with a friend this weekend, and the place was, as expected, full of St. Patty's Day spirit! The beer selection apparently isn't very extensive, but we were mainly there to chow down, so it wasn't a problem. I was really excited to try the beef and potato pie, but was informed by the waitress that they had run out... which was disappointing considering it was only a bit after 1 pm. However, the burgers were also a very appealing option so I went with that instead. My friend and I were also feeling ambitious, so we got a side of nachos. First off, the serving of nachos was very generous, which was nice, considering it cost more than my burger. The tray on which they're served has a large diameter, so the toppings were evenly distributed amongst all the nachos (ie. no sad bland chips on the bottom). The chips were the baked ones, and were fairly bland, so it wasn't too salty with the cheese. I had pretty high expectations for the burger, because there was a substantial blurb on the menu about how the meat was from Beretta Farms. The burger wasn't a total disappointment, but the patty was under-seasoned and did the meat no justice. Nonetheless, it was certainly among some of the better burgers I've had. The "side" of fries was also massive. It also happened to be seasoned much better than the patty. The service here is cheery, the food satisfies and if I lived in this area, I would definitely be back more often! read more

I've only been once and I will update this later. $5 pints on Sunday (after 2 pm) and $5 pints on monday (after 5 pm I think) and wings for $5.99/lb all day, among other weekly specials paired with a relaxed, (mostly) calm atmosphere make this pub worth stopping by if you're in the area. I don't think they carry craft beer so hipsters beware, but the $5 pints include import and premium beer. They carry Stella Artois and Heineken so I can't really complain. The fish and chips succ more than my little, nachos kicked ass. Staff were a bit awkward and one was a bit bitchy but they were obviously tired. Service was a bit slow but there seemed to be about ~20 customers and 3 or 4 servers. Washroom location is in the basement though which could be bad for intoxicated patrons. TL;DR the experience was enjoyable, staff were alright, good specials, food was good for the most part, bring friends. read more

Seating options include booths, high-top tables and the bar. It's a new pub, made to look old. There's a room full of beer kegs, plus kegs in a glass enclosure behind the bar. There's a garage-style front window which might be nice in the summer. Service was fine, and very friendly. The pulled pork was very sweet, as though they were trying to impart flavour but didn't take the time to develop a well-seasoned sauce. The food at McCabes is consistently top notch and is served up quickly; I can honestly say it is one of the few restaurants that I consider a favourite. The service can be hit or miss at times but overall nothing really to complain about. The pub boasts a nice patio, large menu, friendly staff/regulars and an excellent selection of both whiskey and beer. I highly recommend McCabe's! read more

I came here last night and it was good. The customer service, was non pretentious and decent. Our food and drinks came fast, which is good, considering we were hidden, we were sitting in the lounge area, instead of the dining / bar but they didn't foget about us! Lol... Here is what I ordered: Sweet & Hot Chicken Wings - They were good but I'm not sure if I'd order them again.. it had a taste I can't describe and I think one of my wings were undercooked. The reason I ate them amd they turned out Alright, was definitely because of the sauce. What doesn't taste good with sauce, right? Not only that.. I prefer crispy over soggy and I found them to be somewhat soggy. Homemade Potato Chips - These were really good and salty, I would easily come here, just for these alone.. a bit overly greasy but worth it. McCabe Burger - it was really good but it was cooked Medium / Medium Well, so it was pink in the middle (for those who don't like that, ask for it to be cooked throughout/well done). I enjoyed the burger and it was so filling and Big, I only finished Half of It! It comes with fries but since I got the potatoe chips, I asked for a ceaser salad instead (it was a Big Ceaser Salad) but I didn't care for it.. I found it a bit bland but it wasn't terrible.. I wouldn't order the salad again. I had 2 Mill St. Organic Beers and of course it was tasty and cold! They were having trivia night that night and the lady over the microphone was loud, lol.. it was annoying me but whatever, you have to do what you have to do, right? Lol... From the moment I stepped in I had prompt and friendly service, The waitress was very friendly and understanding when I needed a few more minutes make a decision. I ordered the Steak sandwich with the Cesar salad. When I cut into the steak it was the perfect temperature, great flavor, very moist and tender and still charred on the outside. I was very impressed with it and I would recommend it for anyone. I have also had their battered pickles and their Canadian Burger and thy were also over the top awesome! The Kitchener location could be better. If it is slow then the service is good. Food is very hit and miss. Sometimes the soups are great, wings a mediocre to meh. Oh well.. an Irish pub run by an Italian hehe Try the Waterloo location (downtown). Cooks seem to have fresher ingredients but do try to be to artsy fartsy to keep up with the Waterloo crowd. So do not be surprised when you get a sliced anchovie ontop of your dried bread atop your cesear salad. Amusingly tho, they do stick to the wall! But I do not suggest doing that read more

Booths cut off circulation to your legs unless you are 6'1", run down, line cooks look like strung out squeegee kids on their phones and swearing so everyone can hear them. My fish and chips had no coleslaw or tartar sauce - I made my own by asking for mayo, lemons and mixed with relish.. fish batter was dripping with grease, not crispy and mushy inside. Really enjoyed this place. We have been a couple times now and it has always been good. The place is very clean and well laid out. Service has been great every time. The food was excellent. We had mostly bar food. Between the four of us we ordered deep fried pickles, loaded potato skins, chicken wings, garlic bread, mozza sticks, and the spinach dip. Everything was awesome, perfectly cooked. My only complaint would be the chicken wings. If your going to highlight on the menu that your suicide wings are "no joke" at least make them hot. Service was friendly and food portions plentiful while the live duet doing a folksy cover of Bob Marley on the patio kept me distracted for the few minutes that my drink was empty. The wings must have come from Arnold Schwarzenegger's chickens since they were so meaty and Sauce-trian. Came here for the world cup game between Argentina and Netherlands. This place was rocking! The place to be for real football games. Good beer, reasonably priced. Food is alright, quaffable. Servers are hot. Lots of TV's and a big screen. There's a leather sofa lounge at the back which is good for hanging out. read more

We come here a lot for work functions. The service is usually pretty decent even though they're always busy and the food is good. This is a classic pub - so burgers, wraps, sandwiches and CHICKEN WINGS (my god, they have good ones. I recommend the Irish beer BBQ, with a 'light' amount of sauce). They try to branch out, and I hear they have a good butter chicken but I don't really trust a traditional pub to make Indian food. I guess I'm just not a believer. The portions are big, and you'll leave satisfied. If you're a vegetarian though, beware. They are very light on veggie choices. Stopped in last night for Monday night football. There was $5 pints of anything and 69 cent wings. Lots of nice TVs with great HD, but maybe not the best layout for watching sports, as there are places where you cannot see a TV. The wings were awesome! To all vegans and vegetarians: 10/10 would recommend their Save The World Burger. Made fresh in their kitchen and one of the best veggie burgers I've had. It has great flavour and it's kind of more chewy than your regular veggie patty (in a good way...if you're into that). They also have a really nice upstairs outdoor patio! read more

Was Here on the weekend and I loved it! We sat out on the roof top patio which was a rare treat. The service was quick and friendly, especially considering that they had to navigate all of the stairs with our orders. I ordered the poutine with waffle fries and gravy on the side. The fries were done to perfection. The cheese had been evenly melted on top (not like a lot of places that just throw the cold curds on and hope it melts) They actually put it back in the oven to ensure the cheese melts. Though they have an accessible entrance and even an accessible washroom on the main floor, there is no where accessible to sit. Went there today after our wedding and had my 71 year old mother. We asked if there were any tables rather than the booths and were told "I don't think so" in a flippant tone. The 5 of us were crammed into a booth that we had to step up into and then we quickly ordered drinks. They came quickly but it took a while for the server to return to take the food order, and then even longer for the food to come out. We ended up sending 2 dishes back and they still tasted like garbage. We only ordered apps (how can you screw that up?). The entire order tasted as though they made the food the night before and reheated it. Manager was nice to begrudgingly take off one of the items (big platter of apps) but made it seem that everything was fine. I will never eat here and again and will let my friends who come in for Bluesfest know too. read more
