    Buttermilk chicken and cheddar biscuits
    Kathryn T.

I was grateful that they open late as my partner & I arrived late for our visit to see his friend. His friend recommended us to go this saloon. I felt like I'm back in the 1800s for some reasons. Maybe it's the vibes feeling. They have the Covid-19 check in before we can dine in. I am grateful for that because it's way we can dine comfortably without worrying about being exposed to Covid-19. He said buttermilk chicken and cheddar biscuits are the best. We ordered and share the dish. It was delicious!!! The drinks I ordered were not available but the bartender was willing to make something sweet for me. I love it. Thank you for an amazing drink you have made for me. I'm truly appreciated!!! Locals or travelers, you should stop by and feast their delicious food and champ drinks! Thank you for an amazing experience!

Tuesday butter milk fried chicken special, 10 for $20
    Linda L.

Came here on a Tuesday for their 10 piece chicken for $20 special, which is normally 6 pieces for $20. This was basically the only main dish we ordered to share between the 2 of us as the portion was pretty big, such that we only ordered a cole slaw and a sausage gravy for dipping on the side. The chicken was definitely really tasty and so worth it for the price. The skin was crispy and it wasn't dripping with grease, which was definitely a good sign. Though I did find the meat to be a little dry, so it was kinda hard to cut the chicken, and it might have been easier to eat by hand. You would get sick of the fried chicken taste pretty quickly though, as I struggled to keep eating after my third piece, but the coleslaw definitely helped as a pallet cleanser. In terms of the ambiance, the restaurant is more geared towards offering a bar atmosphere for drinks and social. Very few people actually came here to have a full meal when we were here. Most of the patrons appear to be white collar workers from the downtown Kitchener area who came here to grab a drink and socialize with their friends and co-workers. I definitely would say this is a place that I would also take my friends to get together and grab some food and drinks while we catch up with each other.

Cool drink menu idea. Very fast service. And helps you understand the menu if you don't know certain words

    Epic fried chicken and biscuits!

They aren't doing many things wrong at this establishment. Sampled the fried chicken, and happened to go on a Tuesday when there's a fried chicken special: 10 boneless pieces for $20. Also sampled: cheesy biscuits, pickle plate, Mac n cheese, pear salad and the burger. Everything was pretty fantastic, including the service which was nothing less than outstanding. You can really tell the people who work here know what they're doing and love what they do! Their drink list is certainly geared toward aficionados and is vast. Looking forward to my next visit!

This is probably my new favourite spot in KW. I'd come back just for the cozy atmosphere and fun decor. The service was also great, and they have a nice bar counter. I love their drink menu, which has a handy Venn diagram to help you pick! I'd say I would come back just for drinks, but I know I also couldn't resist the food! We ordered a couple of appetizers to try: the Hushpuppies and the Chorizo Flameado. Both are fantastic and flavourful, and the latter is literally on fire, which was fun. I had the Chicken and Waffles for my main, which is probably the best version of this dish that I've had, at least in Canada. The fried chicken in particular was just so good! Finally, their house hot sauce needs to be bottled and sold, immediately.

I would say this is the most impressed restaurant in me area for me. Most of the dishes must have to try. The environment was good. But it's a lit bit dark for the day time. Their butter milk fried chicken sandwich was really amazing. It comes with biscuit and pickle watermelon rind. The biscuit was soft, and the inside stuffing was all crispy. Soft+ crispy was really amazing. And the buttermilk chicken was savoury and crispy. But if you only have he chicken l, it will be kinda oil and dry. The best way to have is with this biscuit sandwich. Shrimp etouffee was also amazing. The soup was cheesy and savoury.

Went here for dinner with office mates.. the ambience is quite good and so their drinks! Food was great - definitely should order Hush puppies, also the brusselsprout salad is good.

Step into this restaurant and it feels like you're in another dimension... The bar is well decorated and very welcoming. The design is long into the back with lots of seating. The style reminded me of the classic bar set up on Queen street in Toronto, but with a friendlier atmosphere. We visited here with a group and the food and drinks were out of this world. Some very unique drinks and greatly mixed. Coffee & Cigarrettes was one that the group tried and enjoyed. I tried the sour beer (which I'd never tried but really enjoyed) and I was convinced to try the Old Fashioned which I cannot say I regret because it was delicious! The food is great and beautifully presented. I tried frog legs for the first time. I've always been scared to but I was told I would love them and again...right!! So tasty and perfectly cooked/seasoned. The Chorizo flameado was also very tasty. If you're looking for a classy place to try some delicious food, drinks and have some great informative service, give this place a try. You won't regret it!! I'll be back for more!

    Catfish Po'Boy

Stopped in at the Grand Trunk Saloon for a late lunch. Ordered the catfish Po'boy and local craft beer. The po'boy was ok but the portion size was quite small, coupled with potato chips as a side, wasn't a very good value. The saloon was quite cold inside and they had a portable electric heater going in the middle of the dining area. We ate with our coats on as it was so cold, not a very comfortable atmosphere. Not really much here to entice me to return.

Casual ambiance with a lot of drink options. Ordered the Mac and cheese, roasted potato salad and the homemade pickles. All were so good and reasonably priced. I also ordered a Caesar which not only tasted good but also had excellent garnishes (homemade pickles and olives)

My four star rating is just that I think they're really good, but they could be great. The staff is wonderful, both personable and knowledgable about the menu and ready to ask questions if they don't know the answers. The restaurant itself is charming too - you have a small store at the front and then pass by an open kitchen before being seated in a comfortable dining area. I was with a group of 4: my husband, and then another couple he's friends with that I was meeting for the first time. We were told that we should consider 2 dishes per person, and 6-8 for a group like ours with the intention of sharing. I love the chance to get to try many different things, so sharing seemed like the way to go. With that said, some of these dishes were much more challenging to share than others. We got the fried oyster mushrooms (easy to share), eggplant (easy), leek (difficult), roots (medium), duck (medium), crab & shrimp (hard), and mushroom main (easy). To this point, I would suggest going as a couple or with a friend you're quite comfortable with as the dishes feel easiest shared between 2 and not as large of a group. Minor, I know, but still worth mentioning. The food itself was delicious. Stand outs to me were their mushroom dishes (both fried and the main), crab & shrimp, and caramel apple dessert. I loved these for being incredibly thoughtful dishes, wherein the star of the dish was never minimized, and other elements brought in textural surprises or nuanced tastes to compliment what was being featured. The only thing we had that I felt was a miss was the seasonal pumpkin dessert, and for having had 9 dishes with only 1 being a bit lackluster means to me that Odd Duck has 5 star potential! The things that brought this to a four were the pacing, cutlery, and challenges sharing after it had been suggested we do so. With so many plates, I acknowledge the challenge but sometimes it felt like we were waiting quite a bit of time for the next bite of food. While the staff was attentive and refreshed our plates and silverware multiple times, there were a few dishes (leeks, and duck come to mind) that I wish we would have had a sharper knife. Knowing that we planned to share everything, I also wish that we'd been armed with that sharper knife to help divvy everything up accordingly. With that said, I would absolutely return to the Odd Duck. I love that they use fresh, seasonal ingredients and do a great job with them. I hope that when I return some of the things that made them a four have been easily remedied and the experience is a true five stars!

My friend recommended this place. They change the menu every two weeks or so (and she may or may not have tried each menu change...). There was four of us, and we got 10 dishes to share, as well as the cheese sampler. The service was good, and they brought out two at a time so we could savour it all. We started with the cheese sampler which came with two local cheeses, and a nice strawberry sauce, and their homemade crackers. (See pictures for the menu we had that night) The carrots came with a tasty sauce. The turnip dish was nice, but for me the mushrooms were the star of this dish. I didn't find the tuna fishy, and the lime crema paired well, as well as the sesame tuile (cracker). The scallop may seem overpriced at $30 for just one, but it was perfectly cooked (the knife just glided its way down), and big enough to share among the four of us. Certain parts of the beef were more cooked than others, but had a nice tasty sear. They didn't ask how we liked it cooked and came medium rare to medium (I usually order rare). The blueberry and peppercorn jus paired nicely with it. The lentil salad may have been one of my favourites. It tasted like it had lemongrass in it (which is one of my favourite flavours) and a convincing way to introduce lentils to those who may not be a fan. The bok choy was presented nicely and the mint paired well with it. I especially liked the rice paper chip. The gnocchi had a nice chew to it, and I liked the basil and sour cherry sauce. We finished off with their gluten free chocolate cake, and the mousse. They were both tasty, but if I had to choose again, it would be the mousse. The cake is soft and the (hibiscus & licorice root coconut) ice cream happily reminded me of coconut sago. The mousse is a bit misleading, as it's nothing like you would expect: not a soft creamy dessert, but instead ice cream with a hard ruby/dark chocolate coating on the outside. The chocolate coating is a bit hard to break, but tasty once you do. If the menu remained the same I would reorder: the turnip dish, scallop, lentil salad, gnocchi, and tuna. Menu looks a bit pricey, however they don't charge gratuity, as they pay a thriving wage. Would definitely come again.
