A fabulous steakhouse for a special occasion. We were celebrating my father-in-law's birthday and an early Father's Day celebration. He is in a wheelchair and the staff were lovely and accommodating. We had an amazing dinner and really enjoyed two 7 oz Filet Mignons (one with the twice baked potato and one with a garden salad...both came with veg on the side as well), the Ribeye (14 oz steak was split with an add on each of a shrimp skewer and a twice baked potato), a skillet of wild mushrooms to share and a lovely bottle of Argentinian Malbec. I loved how the tables are not crowded/close together. The staff was attentive and the food was delicious. Our faves were the filets, the mushrooms and the twice baked potatoes are phenomenal!

Should've just come here instead of garbage Gyubee to begin with At least they are professional here. If you can't get in, they won't lie about it and screw up your entire night Thank you for your reliable service

This place is somewhere between the Keg on steroids and Ruth Chris in disguise. If you are lucky enough to get Sarah as your server then it will be the best night in Kitchener you've ever had. Steak is better than great, service is even better.

Hadn't been to Charcoal Steak House for a few years. Decided to go for a special anniversary dinner and was kind of disappointed. I would rate the dining experience and wait staff at a solid 4 stars but the food for a restaurant that professes itself to be a high class steak house, only 3 stars. With regard to the steaks, to me they don't serve anything up-scale like T bone steaks, bone in rib eyes, dry aged, or noted as being locally sourced. I had oysters for a starter but there was only a limited choice of condiments to dress them up. I was also surprised to see that all the steaks come with French fries, you can't even get a baked potato with butter and sour cream. The seasonable vegetables included carrots that were akin to carrots used for feeding horses, who sources these? They used to serve nice upgrades like seared shrimps or scallops served in a herb and butter sauce but sadly they are nowhere on the menu now. The food to me seems like quick fix pub grub and not something that would be in a supposedly high end steakhouse.

The menu is as usual on the high end, the specials are available they have a $55 prime rib the fish option available. I guess it's a special in this economy, but I do miss the $38 Sunday prime rib special. So this location was a former gem now it's just on the high end- service is slow too. I may revisit with clients but it's not a place I want to visit with family- it's just a bit high end slow service. We were celebrating two bdays, they didn't have the cheesecake anymore it's one of those from frozen lava cake with ice cream, whip cream and a sparkler- but thanks guys. There seems to be some lunch deals with taco to attract the lunch walk ins- but that's also a low traffic time. I guess they're trying to be creative with their marketing.

For appetizers, the Baked Pecan Crusted Brie was also lacking, it sounded nice on the menu but came out very plain and was only a few tiny pieces of Brie (I thought it was come out as a small wheel). For the main, the Duck breast was not bad, tougher meat, medium rare, nice char, plentiful and beet sauce added a nice sweetness.

I understand keeping the food menu tightly local, but when it comes to cocktails, folks just want what they want. Borealis has some opportunity here. They don't carry any of the most popular beers, wines, whiskey, gins, or vodka. They insist on taking that choice away and they've made a conscious decision to do so. Aside from making the simple task of ordering your favorite beverage a time consuming task, the end result is mediocre. We couldn't even order a pina colada because it isn't local? The food was generally good with some hits and misses. I do like the fact the the food menu is local themed, but it takes execution to make an impact. We had children and adults in our party so the opinions were mixed. The appetizers were good, notably the prosciutto feta flatbread and soup of the day hit a positive note. Duck satay was mixed but I personally found it tender and flavorful. The crowd was 50/50 on entree's. The fish & chips, confit duck, and lamb garnered positive feedback, others did not. Steak frites was an disappointment. Gray, flavorless, and overcooked. The buttermilk fried "Ontario" chicken was viewed as over-breaded with a thick burnt crust and dry throughout. And the slaw it is paired with was watery and old rather than crisp and fresh. The steelhead trout was overcooked, dry, lacking flavor. The accompanying barley risotto was overwhelming and overpowered the delicate nature of steelhead trout. Ambiance was ok and somewhat modern but some found being seated in the lower dining room at what seemed like a picnic table to be off putting. Service was good and staff was friendly. To be honest, many locals really like Borealis. But for me, as an open minded foodie, they have some opportunities around execution and preparation as well as expanding certain offerings at the bar. And let's be honest--bar happiness equals margin and profit.
