Had read good reviews about the Ankeny location. Decided to try the taco Tuesday special of 5 beef taco for $6 with my boys. And it didn't connect I ordered the combo #8 that came with 2 carne asada tacos, side of rice and beans The beans were a bit drier than I'm used to and the tortillas were not as toasted as i assumes tacos would be I also ordered 3 rolled tacos or taquitos with guacamole and cheese unfortunately when I got home it didn't have guacamole on it :( But I would definitely go back, I love Mexican food and I usually go to taco bell for a quick drive through and it's closer but I want to come back again because they also have a salsa bar and I love salsa read more

Omg yum! Drive through available too! First off, this building is super old. It's clean, but run down, holes in the booths, cracked floors and leftovers from its time as Long John Silvers. Food, authentic, fresh, fast and delicious! They even have Horchata, I've never seen horchata on any local menu. Chips are fresh, Queso is thick and creamy. My favorite main dish is the Carne Asada Burritos. Their chimi is okay, but those burritos are better. Filled with meat and pico. Their Enchiladas are too spicy for me, but the hubby loves them. My kids get cheese quesadilla's because they are just too picky. Their beans taste just like my Wella's. Their churros are divine too! We ordered the Bavarian cream filled....to die. For the price, I figured I couldn't go wrong for the amount of food promised. The asked me to pull up to the window. I waited for less then 5 minutes for them to make my food and get it to me. When I got back to work and opened the container, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount they give you. There were 2 large beef and bean burritos, rice and beans. They also included 2 red and 2 green containers of hot sauce, a fork and napkins. I tried the red, which was just enough for a lunch. The burritos were very good wrapped in fresh tortillas. I would actually make a trip out if the way to eat here next time I'm traveling through Iowa. I am a self proclaimed Mexican food connoisseur and I can't stress enough how amazing g this was. Eh this place was thoroughly disappointing. It's set up like a SoCal taco shop but has the quality of a chipotle at best. The burritos are small, the tortillas taste like something from HyVee, and their salads are bland. If you're looking for a pseudo authentic flavor I'd look elsewhere. In addition to their food quality both times we've ordered from there they've gotten our order wrong. On the bright side, their horchata is as good as any I've had at other taco shops. Abelardo's is by far the freshest, most authentic Mexican drive-thru restaurant! They seem to cook the food fresh right when you order. I've had the taquitos, the tacos, the shrimp, and the breakfast ham omelet -- all were delicious. The steak nacho's are huge, filled with lots of flavorful meat. The staff will speak to you in Spanish or English, which makes it kind of fun. They have free wifi inside the restaurant and a frequent visitor card which entitles you to a free burrito after 6 visits. There are plenty of menu choices. Stopped in and went through the drive thru for a quick lunch. The fish tacos were good but loaded with onion in the pico. The rolled tacos were super crispy and really good!! They were able to substitute all beans instead of beans and rice which is so worth it!! The tortillas were fluffy but a bit dense. The guacamole was a bit spicy and was almost over powered by the jalapeño juice put in it. And their pico again had tons of onions. But the flavor was good. Especially if you dip the rolled tacos in the beans. And the fish tacos were packed with fish. Staff was nice and pretty speedy for fresh food. Drive thru was easy to get in and out of. Don't let the outside of the building keep you from stopping! Being new to town we finally stopped and wish we wouldn't have waited so long. Place was sparkly clean, impressive. Floors had just been scrubbed. Tables and counters were all wiped very clean. Salsa bar was fresh, clean and refrigerated with a cover! Impressive. Workers were very polite and helpful. Food was very good, and they made a substitution for me with a smile. We've been to four Mexican restaurants in Ankeny so far and this is the best at half the price. We will def be back. Had an issue one visit where I ordered two burritos in the drive thru and when I got home there was only one.
