What a charming shop! The staff were very friendly and efficient. My maple long john was incredibly fresh with a creamy frosting. My son was thrilled with his sprinkle donut, especially with the fun, non-standard colors like blue and green. My husband's apple fritter had a strong cinnamon flavor with bits of apple; it was a bit crunchier on the edges than we expected, but still delicious. We got an old fashioned for our one-year-old, and it was the perfect choice - not too sweet, nor sticky. The big surprise was the breakfast sausage sandwiches my husband and son ordered. The high-quality egg, sausage, and cheese on a fresh croissant were fantastic. I took a bite and was truly impressed, especially for the price... under $5 is very reasonable for the size. I was waffling over the Kona iced coffee, so a worker kindly gave me a sample. It was stronger, sweeter, and creamier than I expected, so I happily purchased a cup. The shop itself is small and can get a bit crowded, so it's probably not the best spot if you're planning to sit and eat inside. We will definitely be back the next time we're in Ankeny though. I can already imagine grabbing donuts and coffee to enjoy at the park with the kids once the weather warms up! read more

I'm always on the search for legit donuts and that's exactly what can be found here! Apple fritters are my go to and let's just say they do it right as it was super flavorful and had crispy edges along with just the right amount of apples to make it totally yummy! Their old fashioned maple was also very yummy it was your typical old fashioned just the way you like it! Now the blueberry cake donut was probably my favorite one as it was super tasty and just hit the donut spot very well! So this is a small little shop right off the road and when I first pulled up I could smell the donuts out front it was then that I was like yes this is going to be good and it totally was! There was a short line when we arrived but it wasn't too long before we were at the counter. Service was friendly and attentive! The apple fritter was BIG and had a great crunchy exterior and light and soft interior with a great cinnamon flavor sprinked inside. Definitely my favorite. The cronut was soft and delicate, perfect ratio of glaze to flaky softness. The old fashioned donut was exactly what you expect it to be but had a good balance of moisture inside which is key. A lot of places end up with a very dry bite but not here. I also appreciated that this isn't an over the top donut place with a billion toppings and variations. Right next door to Wheel House Pizzeria & Pub. The former location of ChuChu Donuts. I never made it over when it was ChuChu... Heather and I wandered into Ambrosia today after pizza to check it out. We were greeted right away at the front counter and both ended up with a pudding filled Boston Creme Bismarck (chocolate frosting). The bismarcks were pre-prepared and in the case along with an assortment of other rolls, long johns, fritters, and donuts. The woman helping us asked what kind of frosting and filling we wanted. She took the rolls from the case and into the kitchen, filled them, brought them back up front, and bagged them for us. $2.90ish I think. I dropped $1 in the tip jar. The bismarcks were light and fluffy. Not dense. Kind of reminded me of a Krispy Kreme donut as far as texture, but larger like a typical Boston Creme. It almost melted away in my mouth. The pudding filling was good and everything tasted really fresh. We took our order to go, but there are several low tables and chairs to sit at if you'd rather dine-in. Pretty good stuff. read more

Thought I had my favorite donut shop near dsm until I went here! Been meaning to try it and finally did this morning. Got there at about 6:45 and was only customer (ppl had already been in though!!). They open at 6! Great selection and the service was awesome. The lady was so sweet. Got a half dozen and she threw in some donut holes on the house. The dough was just perfect and soft, not dry, just perfect. None were a miss! Second visit was not as great though. Don't get me wrong the old fashioned is still the best in the game!! But the blueberry fritter barely had any flavor and chocolate cake donut wasn't top notch either. If I were pregnant again, I would probably make my husband drive here to come get these donuts for me frequently lol But since I'm not, I just dream about these donuts about every other week! It has a few tables and chairs in the front area when you walk into the small shop and a small area with plastic utensils, napkins, etc off to the right when you walk in. A beverage cooler with drinks off to the left near the front by the register and donut case. The front of the shop has all of the gloriously delicious donuts on display. There aren't that many but what they have are all delicious! The long johns can be filled with a variety of choices listed on the menu behind the counter. They are filled after you order. The Service: 5/5 We love the owner. She is absolutely a sweetheart and is so friendly and willing to answer any questions! She also told me that she is always willing to reserve any donuts for anybody if you call ahead so that you don't miss out on your favorites! We tend to do this because we always used to miss out on the glazed all of the time and we would be in by 10 or 11am and they were gone already! I arrived at 11am on a Sat morning anticipating a limited selection, but I was willing to accept my fate because of my timing. This place is amazing. If they do not have the type of donut filling you desire in the case, they will go in the back and fill a pastry for you. You choose frosting and filling and they provide! The server said they prefer to do that to avoid waste. She also said my timing was perfect because I avoided the rush. They tend to get pretty busy early on a Saturday morning. I'm a purist when it comes to donuts and usually always fall back on the glazed ones and their glazed donuts are to die for! Tender and JUST sweet enough! Don't get my wrong, being born and raised here, I am partial to Krispy Kreme BUT as I grow older and my taste buds change, Krispy Kreme can be too sweet sometimes and that's where Ambrosia comes in! They don't have any filled donuts in their case, but they do fill to order! So just let them know you want a filled one and they will fill them for you! They also have cinnamon ones, cereal topped ones, and cookie topped ones amongst others. They have a few tables for those that want to scarf them down there and grab another to go. Originally called "ChuChu Donuts", this establishment was renamed to Ambrosia after ownership changes. The name is fitting, after all ambrosia was the legendary food of the Greek pantheon offering them long or everylasting life. Highly recommend hitting this store up early around 6 am for hot and fresh donuts. They're big, fluffy, and oh-so succulent. Unlike most donuts anyone has ever had before. They have a richness and bite which puts Krispy Kreme to relative shame. Another bonus is all filled donuts (except honeymooners) are filled with your selection of cream or jam at time of order. This is now our "go to" donut store (since the recent, sad closing of Donut King.) It's well worth the drive to Ankeny. You'll find fresh, fluffy donuts of all sorts. The store has a cute logo and is clean inside and out. Having been there three times now, we've sampled most of their wares. I thought the maple long johns with bacon would be great, but I was perhaps overestimating the power of bacon. All other donuts and rolls I've had there have been fantastic. I love that you can choose your filling for any long johns! I guess in some places that then makes them not a long john if they're filled. They have a selection of coffee drinks, a cooler of cold drinks, a nice area for enjoying your buy if you can't wait to get it to your house. We've always thought the staff was very attentive, very friendly and very fast. Why head to the Dunkin Donuts 3 minutes away? Take the extra drive to Ankeny and try this softest donuts around! read more
