Friendly, affordable, fresh and tasty. Donut holes melt in your month. The sausage croissant sandwich was good.

So I guess no more Brick Street Bakery? Great location. No donut cases displaying donuts. We had to ask about the donuts and it was 8am. They had the "fancy" donuts, you know the ones that people get creative with cereals and stuff. No plain every day donuts. I got the apple fritter. It had cherries in it, I didn't know that. The 2 ladies that were there were super sweet. There is some seating inside and outside. And you can see the old architecture of the building inside and out which makes it fun. They are only open 6am-2pm. Will need to go back and try their pizza as I was not impressed with the donut.

We had to try the goodies.. so I got the maple frosted cake donut. I wasn't expecting much... I'm not a huge fan of cake donuts because every one I've had has left me dry-mouthed and searching for water... but not here! Brick Street's donuts were not dry at all! Moist and perfectly sweet! The coffee (we just have it black) was smooth and tasty. My husband enjoyed his gooey sticky-bun :)

My son was thrilled with his sprinkle donut, especially with the fun, non-standard colors like blue and green. My husband's apple fritter had a strong cinnamon flavor with bits of apple; it was a bit crunchier on the edges than we expected, but still delicious. We got an old fashioned for our one-year-old, and it was the perfect choice - not too sweet, nor sticky. The big surprise was the breakfast sausage sandwiches my husband and son ordered. The high-quality egg, sausage, and cheese on a fresh croissant were fantastic. I took a bite and was truly impressed, especially for the price... under $5 is very reasonable for the size. I was waffling over the Kona iced coffee, so a worker kindly gave me a sample. It was stronger, sweeter, and creamier than I expected, so I happily purchased a cup. The shop itself is small and can get a bit crowded, so it's probably not the best spot if you're planning to sit and eat inside. We will definitely be back the next time we're in Ankeny though. I can already imagine grabbing donuts and coffee to enjoy at the park with the kids once the weather warms up!

Gayle and I stopped in today after reading about it within some "48 hours in Ames" article. I ordered a brisket grilled cheese sandwich, while Gayle chose a similar one with blackberry flavoring. We split a can of Guinness off the convenience store fridge, and then sat outside for our street and car wash view. We had nice shade on a not too hot day and took the opportunity to hang out bit after we finished our meal. This was a tasty and pleasant experience of good value overall.

Wow, it is a lot more than a quick breakfast at a gas station! The kitchen was complete and had a full menu offered up. It was also a commercial bakery... multiple bakers working on cinnamon rolls that looked divine! I had a breakfast quesadilla. It had real flavor in it with candied jalapeños. It was a lot but judging from all the plates I saw come out of the kitchen everything there was solid in serving size. The chai latte was good too. And the folks were nice. They definitely have loyal fans locally, folks were ordering for tailgates!

This silly kid's joke from the 80s was no doubt the germ of an idea that built this franchise. It hints at nostalgia - a different era where kids didn't have phones and tablets in their faces around the clock and used their brains to think up stupid jokes that spread like word of mouth memes. And although the decor was cute and kitschy, it didn't really give 80s dad jokes vibes like I thought it would. There were some old movie posters but the overall theme was unclear. The donut selection is incredible though and the bakery case glorious to look at, making it hard to choose. I chose a classic pink sprinkle donut and it was great. A bit on the dry side but it was later in the afternoon so maybe not the freshest, or maybe their donuts are a bit dry as a rule. Service was fast and efficient and there's plenty of parking. Check it out for a break from the ordinary gas station donuts popular in the area.
