We loved our first visit to Tasty Tacos, a recommendation by a neighbor. No frills. Just a terrific cheap eat-stop on Ankeny's Delaware Road, minutes off Highway 35. Admittedly, I was concerned when I entered the restaurant, as there were two lines perhaps 10 deep each, but we were assured by a customer "not to worry," and he was spot on! Lots of options, but I elected to get their two originals, a flour, and a corn taco, and they rocked. Great pace to ordering, kind at the counter, excellent pricing. I never felt rushed or "just another customer." The flour taco was fluffy and tasty like I've had in Mexico, and the corn taco was also delicious. My friends and I stopped here on our way to Minneapolis last month and it was a good experience. I'm not into tacos but this place had really good steak tacos. I've eaten Tasty Tacos original flour tacos since I was a kid, back when they were being sold out of a shed-turned-restaurant next to the road on Grand Avenue. A few years back I decided to try the bean tacos. They aren't bad if you're looking for a non-meat option. Tasy Tacos run specials on them for Lent, and you could do worse elsewhere, but that isn't the point of this review. Today I decided to change things up and ordered 2 chicken flour tacos. This was my first time ordering chicken tacos here. like to switch things up every once in a while and try something new. I wasn't expecting much from a chicken taco -- maybe some ground dark meat with some beans in it. I was totally wrong. What I got was seasoned strips of white meat with the lettuce and cheese that we expect from Tasty Tacos. FULL DISCLOSURE: I season my tacos using the sauce packets available as that sauce isn't as watery as their name brand sauce can be. I also ordered some sour cream. I find that one side of sour cream is sufficient for 2-3 tacos. My order was ready before I was done getting my napkins and sauce. The chicken was warm and there was plenty of it. The flavor of the chicken taco was amazing, possibly making it the best-tasting taco they offer, in my opinion. I will definitely be trying these chicken flour tacos again. To verify. Food 8.8: The flour taco is pretty good I like the crisp to it and the ingredients on it were pretty good and it didn't have any after effects after eating it. They have a mural and peppers on the fans it really feels like your in a legit Mexican restaurant plus food came out pretty quick, only down side is that there is no music Price 7.1: The price was decent with the size of the tacos and how they were made. Ankeny Tasty Tacos seems to always be busy and this visit was no different on a Friday night at almost 9pm. Half of the seating area was closed for cleaning and at least half of the booths were taken by diners, with a bunch of people standing around for their to go orders. The original flour taco is my favorite, followed by the chicken taco. Their service is usually very good and for the most part the restaurant is always very clean. I think the tables could be wiped down a little more frequently but as long as the last person cleans up after themselves we're good. read more

I would rather eat here than almost anywhere else along this Ankeny strip of road. There is not a bad thing on the menu. The staff are always helpful. Tasty tacos is always a must stop for me whenever I am in the Des Moines area. At first glance, one might think this place is nothing special. I was skeptical at first-- there is no glitzy specials or advertising. But man, those tacos are some of the best I've had! The flour tortillas are fried -- so the outside is crispy and the inside soft. The meat doesn't have a ton of flavor or seasoning, but they offer a range of salsas and sauces! Was told to only get one item. The taco. As explained, they do not call it tasty taco for their burritos. So I ordered the taco and it was in fact tasty. today purchased dinner at tasty tacos and after paying I saw a very small sign on the side of the cash register opposite of the side I was standing charging a handling fee for using a credit card....will not be returning have been eating tacos for 50+ years there no more. Hate being charged covertly why is there not a sign on the door or being told at the presenting of a card for payment. Meanwhile Apple Pay and an android online method is not being charged. Ankeny tasty taco is the best place to cure a Mexican craving. Altho I can speak for everything on the menu the flour tacos are by far the best in town. I usually end up getting 3 of them to cure my hunger. I always get 1 chicken 1 pork one steak as I can never decide on just 1 or 2 kinds, remember to get sour cream if you like as it is sold separately. They do a great job being quick with meals and I can get in and out easily for lunch. They keep the place clean and usually are busy. I see that as a good thing for food this fast.
