    Vickie burrito yes!

2nd visit. Ceviche de Cameron was fantastic although it was very limey! Husband had a really good burrito called the Vickie. Wow! Service wasn't as good on our second visit.

First time there but not the last time for sure! Small place but definitely a solid place for large portions and stiff margaritas! You ever go to a Mexican restaurant and their tortilla chips taste like they came out of a bag at the grocery store and you are so disappointed? Well THIS PLACE IS NOT THAT! The tortilla chips were fresh and crispy and tasty! I mixed the regular salsa with their hot salsa to get a perfect blend! The margarita was a very large and very stiff and a great value! Dinner was their chicken and shrimp burrito covered in the cheese sauce and filled with onions, rice and other yum stuff! The portion was huge and extremely filling! Great flavor and the chicken was tender and seasoned perfectly! The Mexican rice was fresh and not dried out! Extremely reasonable and worth it! I'll definitely be back!

Great new addition to Ankeny! We stopped in shortly after they opened for business. The chips and salsa were fantastic. Our server was very friendly and knowledgable of the menu. My husband had the burrito California and I had the pollo loco. I really enjoyed the chicken and rice but wasn't a huge fan of the beans. My husband enjoyed his burrito as well. The waiting area is not really very big so that may create issues later this year when it's freezing out and they're having a rush. Parking is pretty good as it's in an area with other shops also. Overall I enjoyed my visit and thought they did fantastic for being so new. Can't wait to go back!

    Fajita!

Had dinner here today and everyone enjoyed their meal. Fajita was great and so we're the chips and salsa. Kids meal was good size and quesadilla had lots of cheese and higher quality than expected for a kids meal. Overall everyone liked their food and the service was good as well.

    Tracy's burrito...huge!

Typical Mexican fare... Fajitas, burritos, tacos and the like. The salsa is excellent!! We both had the Tracy's burrito with steak. I swear, the burrito was bigger than my head!! And smothered with cheese, very good! The drinks. We tried the mojito mule, mojito and a cantarito. All very good! I thought the service was a little slow, but not awful. It took an unusually long time to get one of the drinks I ordered, but it finally came and I enjoyed it. And for Mexican food I thought it took a little longer than normal as well. But The waiter was super friendly, upbeat and entertaining, great personality and attentiveness. He kept coming back to check on us, assure us our food/drinks were coming, apologize for the wait. So it wasn't like he was ignoring us. When we finally got our food it was great. Did I mention the burrito was bigger than my head? Overall good experience. I would recommend this place and eat here again if I'm in the area.

They have great food and drinks, one of my fav Mexican restaurant in Ankeny. They make some amazing fresh guacamole at your table. If you want small order that's still made daily but not as flavorful. Definitely would recommend going there and try the mojito or 3 with some fresh guacamole. I like to always order side of fried jalapeno. Absolutely wonderful! The 4% on charge on cards when pricing is already pretty high is the downside.

    The fresh guacamole.

Wow! Just passing through on our way from Kansas City to Minneapolis area and found this place on Yelp. Amazing Mexican food, and great service. The fresh guacamole was some of the best guac we have ever had, and it is a very large serving!

Large portions. Taste was good. Service was a bit slow. Credit card fee added that is not advertised even when using debit card.

The shrimp was cooked perfectly, tender and fresh. The rice and beans on the side were warm and tasty, and the complimentary chips and salsa were a great start to the meal, especially with both a mild and a hot salsa to choose from. Overall, a really satisfying and well-balanced meal! The employees there were attentive and warm to us, even though it wasn't busy at all since we went during off-peak hours. The restaurant was also spacious and was clean!

A: All you can eat chips and salsa brought to your table. Great Salsa. R: Recommendations from the bartender/server for his favorite meal. G: Guava Margarita is a must have. A: A large menu to choose from. R: Reasonably priced restaurant I: I had to fight my husband off my meal. T: Tasty meals thrilled us. A: A full stomach is how we left Hubby ordered Burrito Carnitas with steak, onion, bell pepper, topped with green sauce, cabbage & melted Jack cheese. The bartender/waiter told me he had the Carne Asada:Charcoal grilled sliced skirt steak served with guacamole, roasted onions and jalapenos. Comes with the same cabbage and beans. The flavor was amazing. I fought off my husband off my plate. It was enough food for 2 meals and did not disappoint. Amazing. This meal was a little more than I usually get, but I might have started something.

Restaurant was small, interior could've used a quick sweep. Restaurant was relatively quiet besides chatter from the workers whom seem to be friendly with one another which is a huge plus from a guest perspective. Walked out with a tab of $24 including time and entree with an iced coke which could use more ice in my humble opinion. Will definitely be back to try other options on their menu.

Flame Cantina in Ankeny promises a taste of Mexican street food with a modern twist, and for the…read moremost part, it delivers. My recent visit was a flavorful fiesta, with some dishes shining brighter than others. The Good: The homemade chips and salsa is a menu item (not complimentary) Which we don't mind because you are more mindful when eating them. They are also delicious and if you get the guacamole or the chees dip you will not be disappointed! Mango Shrimp Tacos: These were the stars of the show. The tortillas cradled juicy grilled shrimp, drizzled with a vibrant mango Pico de Gallo and bathed in a creamy guajillo crema. The sweet and spicy combo was a true explosion of taste, and the shrimp cooked to perfection - tender and slightly smoky. Quesa Birria Tacos: These braised beef delights were another winner. The slow-cooked Angus beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender, swimming in a rich, flavorful adobo sauce. The crispy tortillas held up well to the juicy filling, and the accompanying onion and cilantro dipping sauce added a refreshing touch. Atmosphere: The restaurant itself is a vibrant and inviting space. The open kitchen adds to the lively atmosphere, and the colorful décor transports you straight to a bustling Mexican cantina. The 'OK' Taco Salad: While the ingredients were fresh and flavorful (ground beef, black beans, corn, Pico de Gallo, cheese, and a tangy cilantro lime dressing), the salad suffered from a glaring omission - lettuce! A taco salad without lettuce is like a margarita without lime - it just feels incomplete. (To be fair - our server offered to go get my Wife some lettuce, I just thought it was worth noting.) Service: The service was friendly, and on-point. Tristan kept the drinks filled and was attentive without being over bearing, in a small place like this it is a good balance. Overall: Flame Cantina offers a delicious and vibrant taste of Mexican street food, with some dishes truly excelling. The mango shrimp and birria tacos were standouts, and the atmosphere is perfect for a casual and fun dining experience. Just be sure to request extra lettuce for your taco salad, and you're good to go! Final Verdict: 4 out of 5 stars. Flame Cantina is a great choice for a casual and flavorful Mexican meal, with a few minor tweaks needed to truly ignite all five stars. Pro Tips: Try the spicy hot sauce - ask for it, it one of the better ones I've had because it has both the heat and the flavor! Saturday's are $3 tacos until 5pm! I hope this review helps you decide whether to give Flame Cantina a try!
