    Shrimp in the Camarones Huapango.
    Dan T.

El Huapango Mexican Restaurant (3600 SE Crossroads Dr Suite D, Grimes, IA 50111). The Camarones Huapango here is really an excellent dish. Four of my favorite things. Large shrimp, bacon, mushrooms, and cheese. The dish also comes with green and red peppers, rice, and "salad." Served with flour tortillas. We started using El Huapango for takeout shortly into our current season. This was the first time we'd dined in. Social distancing is meh. They seated us at a booth right next to another couple. Fortunately the corner booth we were seated at wasn't "fluffy" friendly so I asked if we could move to a table. The restaurant wasn't crowded. Only two couples and one larger party... Moving us to a table helped with distancing and was much more comfortable. Seems like this happens with a lot of corner booths. Restaurants appear to jam two benches and a table into the space they have left at the end of a row during construction... A Victoria Secret or Abercrombie & Fitch model I am not... The other booths looked normal sized. Our server wore a mask. A chimichanga lunch plate, cheese sauce, a soda, and my entree came to $30 and change before tip. Service was good, the food came out fast, and everything was in order. Lately the shrimp dishes I've been ordering at my local Clive go-tos have been kind of lack luster. Small and bland. These were nice sized, had a little char from the grill, and were seasoned perfectly. And bacon just makes everything better... Definitely raised the bar a step or two back up as far as what my expectations should be...

Read through all the reviews, one said the place was too warm, it's been fixed. my dad had to go get his sweater. Another review talked about no chips and salsa, they brought us some as soon as we sat and refilled them too, i'd say that's fixed as well. Still another review mentioned slow service or lack of . . . We had our drinks, food and an attentive waitress through the meal. On the way to this place we passed a car and then it seemed we passed it again, was it a glitch in the matrix or a YouTuber? We will never know. The food was good, and the kitchen was quick. The service was quick at the start and through the main meal but once they new we were done we had to find our waitress to get the check. Still if that was the only glitch in the matrix . . . if you live near by or are passing through this place should blip your radar.

Hawaiian Pork Tacos with Rice and Beans

We were looking for Mexican and a friend suggested we try El Huapango. Her family loves it for the family meals (tacos, enchiladas, fajitas), but being only 2 with different preferences we ordered individually. The online pick up ordering works great! It is easy to place your order and pay, then you receive an email receipt and a text when it is ready. When arriving you call and your order is delivered to you in your car. We ordered the street tacos - Hawaiian pork (3 tacos, beans and rice with onion and cilantro and salsa on the side), guacamole with chips, and Alambre (one of their specialty meals - grilled chicken, steak, shrimp, chorizo, onion and tomato topped with grilled pineapple served with tortillas, rice and beans). Portions were generous and the food was all very tasty! We will definitely be back and will recommend this gem to friends! Service from the order to the pick up, price (around $30 with tip), food quality and quantity, all ranked highly!

The food was delicious. My waitress was great. Overall I really enjoyed this place. I will be returning.

Mediocre food. Everything always seems so greasy and never meets expectations. The soup isn't terrible and the portion is very large.

The chips can be stale, and service a bit slow, but the food is really good. The drinks are also very delicious.

Don't add any additional--otherwise the lime flavor will be overpowering. This was an exceptional dish--very generous amounts of cheese and Tajin seasoning as well. The chips were served very warm and they don't skimp on them. I thought the salsa was a tad thick, but that's probably just my preference for thinner salsa... Service was very good--staff checked in regularly--and they took the step of bringing my extra spoon out on a plate. I thought that was interesting as well. I don't know if it was a Monday special, but my tallboy of Pacifico was only $3. I didn't even know they had Pacifico tallboys--I thought this was an exceptional value. Some minor quibbles with my barria tacos--the verde salsa was heavy on the jalapeno--overpowering in fact. The shells themselves were griddled to perfection and there was a healthy amount of cheese in them. The broth was pretty greasy--not something I had experienced previously. The meat was tender, but not very flavorful. On an individual basis, if only one of these issues was present, this would have been a five. The cumulative (minor) issues knocks the overall review down to about a 4.25. The booths are very large and tall, but there's not much room for fat boys like myself to squeeze in.

It's nothing fancy. Friendly and fast service. It had Mexican music playing on the speakers but it was more of a pop/rock Mexican, not the typical music you usually hear in establishments like this. I enjoyed it. Great Mexican beer on tap for what I thought was reasonable prices. Chips and salsa are good. You have to get the Hildago Molcajete. Huge, temperature hot, layers of different stuff, fantastic. Plenty of leftovers. True molcajete served in the stone bowl. No restaurant is cheap anymore. But this place is pretty reasonably priced, and I thought the food is as good as any other local Mexican restaurant

I found what will probably be my go to going forward. We were seated close to the bar. This was also a little closer to the kitchen and were attended to right away. The chips and salsa hit the table right away and we ordered up the guacamole and the queso. Everyone is always really nice and helpful. TVs on over the bar and music plays. I ordered the Huevos con Chorizo this time. Two scrambled eggs with chorizo, Mexican sausage, served with rice and beans. I had them hold the beans. Food came fast again. I was doing the happy food dance my eggs were so good. Once again, an all around great experience. 3 times out of 3 so far.

The gist: exceptional service, warm and flavorful food; energetic ambiance with colors and music, full bar. Extras to know: on the last day of January the restaurant was comfortably warm. I am always cold and typically eat with my coat on but could enjoy tonight's meal without it. Upon arrival we were seated and immediately brought large glasses of water: I love not having to ask AND having a large glass and chips and salsa. The. Hips were typical Mexican restaurant chips; the salsa suited my preference with a bit of sweetness and cilantro. Our server was friendly and 'just right' attentive, allowing us to enjoy our meal while making sure we had drinks. The food came quickly in chilled glasses: the only thing keeping this meal from perfect is actually not so bad- the chipped glasses melted a bit and left a small glass rim puddle- I will ask for a coaster next time. And there WILL be a next time. The menu is extensive and creative with a nod to Iowa in some of the dishes (example: Iowa burrito) Prices totally reasonable for the amount of food. I enjoyed 1/3 of the pollo chorro (grilled chicken breast with chorizo) topped with melted cheese. Delicious combination. Sides of rice, refried beans and lettuce, cheese, tomatoes and sour cream in a mini taco shell. The dish came with a warm flour tortilla. Hubby had the Burrito Texano with steak, chicken and shrimp stuffed in a huge tortilla smothered in green sauce and cheese: we stayed for him to finish- he could not NOT eat it all it was so good.
