Grace was our lady that helped us with our wine tasting as well as letting us taste a couple of the Sauvignon Blanc that my mom wanted to try she was amazing. My 2 cups of red wine were about $20.21 and then on top of that I tipped her five dollars; she deserved it. She was very nice and very kind and letting us know what types of wines were in the wine tasting, as well as how much the wine tasting was for four wines. If you haven't been here, it is a little local mom and Pop place that has wines, beer, and seltzers. The ambience of the area that we were in was warm and inviting wanted you to get the best drink you could while staying for a little bit. 10/10

But I was floored at just how bad the service was on my latest visit. Looking at past reviews of this shop on Yelp, clearly customer service is an issue. I walked in fully expecting to buy several bottles of wine for a party. It was more connivence as I noticed bottles were priced well above double what they should have been. This was downtown St. Augustine, and I figured it was up-priced per the tourist market. But what I didn't expect was the worst customer service ever. I went to get a chilled bottle of sauvignon blanc, only to have the shop keeper literally yell at me, "Don't touch THAT!" as I went to the cooled wine selection. I looked down and I saw a sign (below the waist) that said only the shop keeper can open the refrigerator. Weird, but fine... I was asking for the price of the bottle. The shop keeper was screaming from across the room and didn't even bother to come over and help. The wine was Konos, a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. I lived in New Zealand for a few years and knew of this cheap bottle. She told me it would be $22, which is about double what you'd find in any other store. She then offered me to "taste" the wine if I purchased a glass since they served it by the glass. All this was screamed from across the room. Let me add, I was the only customer in the entire store. It was so rude. I kept trying to be friendly but she was really just not a kind person. As I was debating what to purchase, the shop keeper then screamed at my daughter who was looking at umbrellas. "DON'T TOUCH THAT!" This is where I draw the line. Call me a protective parent, but screaming at my child aggressively is beyond acceptable. I could understand if she was pulling bottles of wine off the shelf but it was an umbrella. My daughter started to cry. This shop keeper should be fired. Yelling at the CUSTOMER then their kid? This is completely unacceptable. I decided, no thank you. I'll take my business elsewhere. I walked a few blocks over to The Gifted Cork where I was treated with respect and the owner gave me recommendations while was kind and sweet to my daughter. I walked away from The Gifted Cork with 4 bottles of wine as gifts for my family. This spot? Well, you get this Yelp review and hopefully others will be warned to stay away.

Each time we've visited we have had wonderful experiences. Everyone is always a joy to interact with. Lexi had a large group during our first visit and then just the two of us the second time. Both times we walked out with our favorite spirits and some new ones. The peanut butter whiskey is always a staple and this one is my favorite. We now have a new addition to our must-have collection, mango datil whiskey. I dont even mix these with anything as they are incredibly smooth. Can you? Sure. But why? The spirits also change out and I'm a little sad that the cookie dough whiskey will become seasonal (that one did mix well with the peanut butter and caramel). But the new key lime pie rum was delicious and the coconut rum is another favorite. Was there anything we didn't like? I am not a fan of the roasted pecan whiskey but I can appreciate why others will enjoy it. In our tasting, Lexi swapped that one out for me so I didn't miss out. The care and joy the team has is palpable and a must stop when visiting the St Augustine area. Big fan and we now stop by multiple times each visit to sample and take home our favorites. Im excited to try the new rye whiskey on a future visit. One thing to keep in mind is that the tasting used to be free and now costs $5. Personally, I don't mind since there is a $5 coupon to use in the store that can be stacked so it becomes essentially free but it's a relatively recent change (the same applies to the nearby St Augustine Distillery and San Sebastian Winery). Do I wish that this one was still free? Of course. Will it stop me from visiting? Nope. It just breaks up my purchases so I can apply the cost each time. (And it's much better than the winery which gives you a plastic cup...nice but not really repeatable.) Overall, City Gate continues to be my favorite Distillery for flavored spirits. My group was greeted by an older man (I believe his name started with a V) who came across as pretty rude and dismissive. We were asking questions about how the wine tour worked, but he wasn't really answering them directly, and his demeanor made us feel like we were stupid for not already knowing the rules of the establishment. He also asked if we were together or separate (for payment). When we said separate, he sighed, so we said we could do together if that was easier. He responded with, "It doesn't matter to me," but clearly it seemed like it did. It was just an uncomfortable interaction, especially when we were simply trying to figure out how everything worked. We ended up doing the wine tour, which was around $5.33 and included six wines. The wines were a mix -- some I really liked and some I didn't care for -- but overall I enjoyed the tasting experience. It can be a little awkward since you're doing it with a big group of strangers, but it's still a fun activity. The wine tasting experience itself was enjoyable, but that first interaction unfortunately left a bad impression and took away from the overall experience.
