My 2 cups of red wine were about $20.21 and then on top of that I tipped her five dollars; she deserved it. She was very nice and very kind and letting us know what types of wines were in the wine tasting, as well as how much the wine tasting was for four wines. If you haven't been here, it is a little local mom and Pop place that has wines, beer, and seltzers. But I was floored at just how bad the service was on my latest visit. Looking at past reviews of this shop on Yelp, clearly customer service is an issue. I walked in fully expecting to buy several bottles of wine for a party. It was more connivence as I noticed bottles were priced well above double what they should have been. This was downtown St. Augustine, and I figured it was up-priced per the tourist market. But what I didn't expect was the worst customer service ever. I went to get a chilled bottle of sauvignon blanc, only to have the shop keeper literally yell at me, "Don't touch THAT!" as I went to the cooled wine selection. I looked down and I saw a sign (below the waist) that said only the shop keeper can open the refrigerator. Weird, but fine... I was asking for the price of the bottle. The shop keeper was screaming from across the room and didn't even bother to come over and help. The wine was Konos, a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. I lived in New Zealand for a few years and knew of this cheap bottle. She told me it would be $22, which is about double what you'd find in any other store. She then offered me to "taste" the wine if I purchased a glass since they served it by the glass. All this was screamed from across the room. Let me add, I was the only customer in the entire store. It was so rude. I kept trying to be friendly but she was really just not a kind person. As I was debating what to purchase, the shop keeper then screamed at my daughter who was looking at umbrellas. "DON'T TOUCH THAT!" This is where I draw the line. Call me a protective parent, but screaming at my child aggressively is beyond acceptable. I could understand if she was pulling bottles of wine off the shelf but it was an umbrella. My daughter started to cry. This shop keeper should be fired. Yelling at the CUSTOMER then their kid? This is completely unacceptable. I decided, no thank you. I'll take my business elsewhere. I walked a few blocks over to The Gifted Cork where I was treated with respect and the owner gave me recommendations while was kind and sweet to my daughter. I walked away from The Gifted Cork with 4 bottles of wine as gifts for my family. This spot? Well, you get this Yelp review and hopefully others will be warned to stay away.

Each time we've visited we have had wonderful experiences. Everyone is always a joy to interact with. Lexi had a large group during our first visit and then just the two of us the second time. Both times we walked out with our favorite spirits and some new ones. The peanut butter whiskey is always a staple and this one is my favorite. We now have a new addition to our must-have collection, mango datil whiskey. I dont even mix these with anything as they are incredibly smooth. Can you? Sure. But why? The spirits also change out and I'm a little sad that the cookie dough whiskey will become seasonal (that one did mix well with the peanut butter and caramel). But the new key lime pie rum was delicious and the coconut rum is another favorite. Was there anything we didn't like? I am not a fan of the roasted pecan whiskey but I can appreciate why others will enjoy it. In our tasting, Lexi swapped that one out for me so I didn't miss out. The care and joy the team has is palpable and a must stop when visiting the St Augustine area. Big fan and we now stop by multiple times each visit to sample and take home our favorites. Im excited to try the new rye whiskey on a future visit. One thing to keep in mind is that the tasting used to be free and now costs $5. Personally, I don't mind since there is a $5 coupon to use in the store that can be stacked so it becomes essentially free but it's a relatively recent change (the same applies to the nearby St Augustine Distillery and San Sebastian Winery). Do I wish that this one was still free? Of course. Will it stop me from visiting? Nope. It just breaks up my purchases so I can apply the cost each time. (And it's much better than the winery which gives you a plastic cup...nice but not really repeatable.) Overall, City Gate continues to be my favorite Distillery for flavored spirits. First time here. I'm not really a "regular" at any liquor store, but there are two other shops I…read morego to when stocking up the bar. The folks in these stores smile and greet you when you walk in. Ask if they can help you find things. Guide you to the correct register when you're ready to check out. And say "Thank you! Have a great day!" as they make sure you've got your box or bags all together and hooked around your hands to carry out to your car. I happened to be near this store one morning and decided it was convenient enough to drop in. The first thing I noticed was the lack of sales and specials. I won't pretend I did anything like a comprehensive price comparison, but I can "spot check" a couple of prices that happened to be fresh on my mind. One thing I got the previous week at another store was a BOGO bourbon for $30. So basically $15 a bottle. Fantastic price. But here, their normal price was $35. That immediately made me worry that I was paying an extra $5 or more for each item, so I really limited myself to just the necessities, instead of a shopping spree to try out a few new brands or bottlings. The shelves took a while to figure out. They had "American Whiskey" separate from "Bourbon," which threw me off for a while. And I think some of the sections wrap around to the other side of the shelves, without the area being labeled. So it's easy to miss things when hunting around. Then finally, checking out was an experience. They had two people working there on a slow morning. One was focused on the drive through. The other was stocking something, so did nothing to direct me to the right register. I just strolled back and forth trying to figure out where to put my things. Then the card reader on that register seemed broken. Just blank. So I didn't swipe like she expected. Just an awkward silence. So I asked, "what next?" so she would wake up and realize something was off. She hit a few keys on the register. Mumbled something about trying again. But it was still blank and I'm not about to swipe at a terminal with no idea how much I'm swiping for. Then I guess she sent the transaction to another register and mumbled something else to let me know. So I strolled back and forth trying to figure out which card terminal was prompting me for my card. I swiped two registers over, finally closing out the process, and she was still standing there at the first register with my 2 bottles and bags expecting me to walk back and retrieve them. No "sorry about that" or "here, let me hand these to you," or "thanks, have a great day!" Maybe a petty thing to point out. But overall, with my concern about prices, finding things, bad communication, and sleepy customer service, there's truly no reason why I'd ever pass a dozen other liquor stores to get to this one again. I'd rather go to the ones where people yell "Norm!" when I walk in, and make me feel special.
