Abacus, used to add subtract, multiple and divide. In this case, it's subtraction. The food was very bland, we ordered take out. Should be trash out. We've eaten a lot of Chinese takeout over the years. This is a place we won't order from again when in Glendale area. My wife thought it was horrible. Food we ordered: pupu platter for 2, hot & sour soup, House special chow mein, moo shu pork, orange beef (requested not spicy) total with tax $49 + change. pupu platter: poop poop - egg rolls tasteless, bbq pork overcooked, flavorless chicken wings and drumettes, fried shrimp (neutral) crab puffs, (deflating) Hot & Sour soup (afraid to try it for now, will prep myself to try it later) House special chow mein, definitely not special, flavorless, and if you like thin tasteless linguine like noodles with a hint of diluted brown color sauce as flavoring, then you might like it. Moo Shu Pork, sorry, should call it shoo shoo pork. go away go away. Orange beef: not use to having orange beef that is breaded battered fried. In my book, placing an orange slice garnish on the food doesn't make it orange beef. Call it a day and call it a lemon. Let's hope my wife and I find a better place. We ordered from this place, based on Yelp reviews, proximity of where we're staying and didn't have a car to get around. This take out food reminds me of Chinese food from the 1950's and 60s. We have gone here numerous times over the years they have been in business & have "previously over the years" enjoyed their food. Last night was THE LAST TIME we will go there again. After at least 6 different times of BAD MEALS over the last 8 months, (giving them a chance due to the pandemic) WE ARE DONE. The food is BELOW standard. The meats are DRIED OUT and not fresh. My husband & I BOTH had torn up stomachs after eating last night. Panda Express is FAR SUPERIOR in comparison to this "once good" restaurant. Don't WASTE YOUR MONEY. Absolutely HORRIBLE!!! read more

Customer service at it's best. Went in with our two year old. They brought him a kids cup of water without us asking. They brought out complementary hot tea. We ordered one of the family dinners. Had tons of food/ brought some home. They checked on us often but not too often. They took pride in their service and their food! We saw about half a dozen take out orders being picked up while we were there. May be lacking a little in atmosphere but definitely worth it for the service and the food. Came here and ordered the chicken chow mein lunch entree. It was very good and came with a big portion of food. It came with fried rice, egg roll, and crab puff. I also ordered crab puffs and thought they were good. Took less than 15 minutes from ordering to receiving my food. Would recommend for a quick meal. read more

Absolutely recommend this restaurant after all these years. Haven't been in 6 years as we moved away. Used to get take out and also dine in frequently. We ordered four different meals and each one was hot and delicious. Chow Mein was generous portions, Cashew chicken and General Tao were also hot and good. Best egg rolls ever! This is about the only Chinese food in the neighborhood and it was just okay. Today I ordered from there again and I have to report ( in hopes that it improves) that it was horrible. There was a sickenly sweet , thick, overly-laden with five spice powder sauce drenched over all three entrees so that there was no way to discern any unique or particular flavors from any of the dishes. They all tasted syrupy and gross. Even the side dishes of chicken chow mein tasted overly salty, no other flavor could survive the salt or soy sauce. All the chicken was deep fried and gooey, not at all crisp, just wet and doughy. I ordered the dumplings and, although they weren't that great, they beat the others because they were spared the horrible Abacus Inn syrup! I am sorry, but in addition to all of this, the restaurant charged each dish from $1.50 to $4.50 more per dish than what was listed as the price on their website. No apologies from them. They blamed the price discrepancy on someone else's website, yet I was using THEIR website. They tried to say that all changes are due to Covid (have we all heard that excuse enough already)! Even if they've been the only Chinese cuisine around, do yourself a favor and skip this place. Or, maybe, just maybe, they'll take this review seriously and try to take their cooking seriously. If you cook this awfully, then you shouldn't be running a restaurant. Period. read more

I visited Abacus Inn on 3/28/22 during the lunch hour. if you are looking for an edible Chinese food restaurant, this place is not for you. I ordered the Chicken Chow Mein with fried rice. I'm not sure how they can say that the noodles are pan fried, they really should just say that the noodles are tossed in after the chicken is sauteed . I did not find any cabbage or carrots and the flavor was SWEET!! The fried rice is just a big pot of rice cooked with chicken broth. The Mao Gao Gai Peng had the weirdest looking chicken, it had no color and it looked like tofu (which I wish it would have been). In both dishes, it appeared that the chicken was chopped ahead of time and then frozen to save time on food prep. In both dishes, the chicken had this weird crunchy texture. Three years later... wanted a quick meal and didn't want to have to drive 4 or 5 miles to the Chinese place we ultimately "settled for." It's still just okay. I've had Chinese food all across the US, and I have to say this place, by far, is the worst I ever had. The fried won ton was too thin and overcooked. The shrimp egg foo young was hard and tasted like cardboard and no shrimp was inside the patty, but poured on top of the patty with tons of gravy, peas and carrots, like they forgot to cook the patty with the shrimp and threw it on as an afterthought. The shrimp fried rice was not cooked with enough soy sauce and was flavorless. They were also horribly overpriced. The only reason I gave one star was because the shrimp on the egg foo young were pretty huge and tasted good, and the crab puffs (rangoon) were fairly decent. First and last time. read more

Let me preface this by saying that I am not a Chinese food connoisseur. But I do love to have lunch over here whenever I'm on this side of town. If you're looking for some gong bang for your buck, you've found it. The lunch servings are generous, and the prices are low. All lunch items come with these yummy fried won ton crunchy things, a cup of soup, fried rice, an egg roll, and of course, whatever you ordered. All meals - lunch and dinner- also come with hot tea. I've been for both lunch and dinner, but I really recommend going for lunch if you're in the area, because it's just a great deal. And the selection is pretty wide, as well as vegetarian friendly. My favorite thing here is their hot and sour soup. I had honestly never eaten soup at a Chinese food restaurant before Abacus, because they always grossed me out. But I love their hot and sour soup. It has just the right amount of hot and the perfect amount of sour. This soup even inspired me to try making it myself at home because I started craving it, but I live so far away. Oh yeah, every meal also comes with free dessert: a fortune cookie My last one said that I would start writing some great reviews. But I don't think you're really supposed to add "in bed" to the end of that one. read more

Very disappointed in my food. Fake Chinese food if you ask me. I ordered the house special chicken with mushrooms. Hardly had any sauce. Tastes just like fried chicken. The best part? The mushrooms was canned and just dumped on the chicken. I expected fresh mushrooms. Kung pao chicken had no spice. Bland and no flavor. The veggies was good and that's about it. I won't be back. This place used to be amazing. I started eating here in late 2007, and they had by far the best General Tso's chicken I've ever had, and very good egg fried rice. Sometime around 2010 it all changed drastically. I've gone back several times since then, and it has not been great, but this last time I went it was just horrible. I ordered the same chicken, but some of the pieces were not cooked through, I had shell in my egg fried rice, and they were both very bland. It makes me very sad because there really aren't any good Chinese restaurants on the west side, and to say that I'll never go here again is not something I easily do, but this place is just not worth it anymore. read more

Tea was lukewarm upon arrival, tasted unauthentic, with the help of any ambiguous American tea bag. The hot and sour soup had peas...peas! Side of rice was stiff and tasted as if it had been in the cooker all day. Had the stir fry vegetable dish that consisted of broccoli, snow peas and mushrooms overly cooked to mush; where was my bok choy or kai lan or any type of actual authentic Chinese vegetables?! One thing I do give them credit for: service was clean, fast, and efficient. Other than that, your money's better off at Panda Express right down the street. For Chinese in Phoenix, this is my place now. Just discovered it, and boy! do I love their food. I usually judge a Chinese restaurant by how good their hot 'n sour soup is, because most places seem to have no clue how to make it--but Abacus surely does. The best hot sour I ever had loaded with chunks of veggies and flavored just perfect! Had their lemon chicken, and the meal was so huge I brought half home--all for something like $8. Last weeks' order was spot -on once again!- Sure, we may have to wait 30 to 45 mins, but we plan on that, have a cocktail sit down & relax. Chicken in all the dishes we get is nicely cubed white meat, Sweet n Sour Pork just the right amount of sauce, Hot beef dishes are always a fav! Egg rolls are big & crispy. Damn, the hot and sour soup, the egg drop soup and the egg rolls were DELICIOUS!!!! There were four of us and two ordered Kung Pao Chicken, and it was not traditional and did not have peanuts. It was just average tasting although the ingredients were quality ingredients. We had beef and broccoli and had requested it spicy, but it wasn't. Again, it was average. We also had the orange chicken. It had very good quality chicken and I guess it was what I would say was good enough, but it isn't the same as I'm used to and the chicken was not at all crispy as I expected it to be. We thought the lunch specials were more expensive than most Chinese places for lunch, as ours were priced at $8.00 and $9.00. Yes, the egg roll is the size of a small burrito and the soup bowl is by far the biggest I've experienced so I guess it could be justified. The hot and sour soup was amazing!! The base flavor of the hot and sour soup was one of the best I have ever tasted! It was filled with so many ingredients and lots of chunks of dark meat chicken!! The egg drop soup was also filled with a variety of ingredients, including large chunks of white meat!! And the egg roll.....oh, the egg roll!!! My favourite Chinese Restaurant. Better than PF or any of that nonsense. I order the Orange Chicken, Chicken Chow Mein or Mu Shu Pork and I love them all! I crave this place and its deliciousness, maybe it's the addictive MSG but for once, I don't even care! On my last visit, the owner gave everyone a Chinese Calendar as a holiday gift which was kind! Take-out order review. Overall the food was decently good, better than Pei-Wei, Panda Express, and those chain restaurants. Quick service, friendly. Hot and Sour soup was too watery and too sweet and not enough sour. Steam rice was cook correctly, not dry from sitting around too long. Mongolian beef was good. Meat was tender and not overcooked. Cashew chicken was excellent, vegetables not overooked and limp but firm and crispy. Teriyaki chicken was also good, lots of meat, chicken tender, not too much sugary flavor. Plenty of food for the price. My biggest complaint would be not enough spices, chili pepper, or heat in general. Need to kick it up a notch. Would eat here again but ask for more chili. read more

Had delivery with Post Mates tonight.. have always received delicious food from Abacus. Sadly tonight's delivery was awful. The vegetables were cooked yesterday, definitely not fresh and crisp. There was literally 3 broccoli crowns and 3 slices of carrots in the vegetable chow main. The Kung Pow Chicken was stone cold and the sauce was jellied, the vegetables were so over cooked they mashed into my serving beyond disappointed. I have been here at least a baker's dozen times when visiting. The food is fresh and consistent, the service reliable, and the lunch specials are very reasonably priced. Overall, it's a somewhat generic menu. To my taste, the kung pao dishes are generally over sauced, a bit mushy in texture, and not very hot/spicy. Yet overall everything is tasty. The lunch portions are huge and reheat well. Their best dish is the hot and sour soup. This is my dad's favorite Chinese restaurant in Phoenix and I don't need to have adventure-some dining when out with him. In addition, my parents came here for years. When my mom got lung cancer and could no longer go out, Dad would order the soup to go - and the owner was incredibly kind to her in her last months. Don't be turned off by the strip mall location. This place is cute on the inside, clean, and has above average food. Prices are reasonable and portions are healthy. Veggie fried rice to go is only $5 and easily feeds two healthy adults. I have been coming to this location about 4 or so odd years and I have been very happy with them. If you want a cheap lunch with large portions, you have come to the right place. When you first enter a friendly server will seat you and then leave you with two menus. Then the server will quickly return with a hot steaming pot of tea, glasses of water, and then ask if you are ready. If not then they will return in a few minutes. I must say that I have never had more attentive servers than I had have here, and even better they are quick. That includes take out as well. Here is a break down of pros and cons. Pros: -The lunch prices are amazing. You get so much food for what you are paying. -Their hot and sour soup is absolutely divine. -The tea tastes very good and the type they chose acts like a pallet cleanser. -The food is very good quality. The rice is cooked in a traditional Chinese way, their meat is tender, and chowmein is never over cooked. Cons: -Dinner can get a bit expensive so I suggest you eat lunch here. -The chicken was diced way too big and tended to be overwhelming, but when I returned I saw that they fixed that. I have only been disappointed once because the food wasn't cooked very well, but they jumped right on it to straighten it out. I had a problem, they understood the problem, and then took care of the problem. I appreciated their understanding and commitment to their customers.
