I am a long time fan of this Abacus Inn (59th Ave Location)... lately it seems the food is going the wrong direction and attention to detail is suffering. Tonight we ordered take-out... The hot & Sour Soup was cold and very skimpy on the protein. The Egg Food Young is horrible now... I don't know why I keep ordering it, thinking it will change.... Remember when these joints would make it fresh with the ingredients cooked into the patty?? Now the over cook something and top it with a couple pieces of protein and charge $20, calling it Egg Food Young... What happened?? Lastly, the restaurant completely forgot our Orange Chicken. First off, their website is janky as their menu page is a poorly taken picture of their actual menu instead of it being actually listed out like every other restaurant menu. They really need to change that. Note that despite its small nature, it's a sit down restaurant. So we sat down and never got service. So instead, I just went to the front desk to order to-go. They have lunch specials from 11:00am-4:00pm. I got the orange beef with no onions; lunch specials come with two fried wontons, a small cup of fried rice, and an egg roll. This cost me $13.17. The fortune cookie, fried wontons, and egg roll all tasted stale. The orange beef (which somehow still tasted like chicken) was the best part of the meal and the fried rice was average. I had the Singapore Rice Noodle dish and it was spot on. So, so good. I only wish they had the banana crisp like the other location but I can't get the Singapore Mei Fun at the 35th Ave location. It has been a very long time since we have been here. Restraunt is now open and newer booths! The artwork is bright and somewhat refreshing, despite the installer obviously not using a level in its hanging. The service was very good. For the small restaurant it appears they do a very large takeout business. There were three waitresses that made sure patrons that were dining were well taken care of and still took care of the revolving front door. The food.... I wanted to really like the shrimp and Chinese Vegetables and the Chicken and Chinese Vegetables. Each was served in a nice platter that could have easily served two or more each, with a bowl of white rice on the side. The sauce was abundant, actually more than enough. Each dish looks exactly the same with delicate little mushrooms and cut mini corn with broccoli that could have used another few minutes in the steamer. I hate to say it but maybe my COVID affected palate just was overwhelmed.... I just did not care for the main attraction ;(. I picked it up only to come home and the orange chicken isn't in the bag!!! Super upset because that's really the only reason we even tried this place and we live 25 min away. The worst order experience of my life. First of all, I did order through GrubHub via yelp, so GrubHub is in fact partially responsible. That being said, I was given a 15 to 35 minute window to pick up my order. At 7:14, I was notified that my order was ready. I arrived at 7:22. At this point, there was a line out the door and the restaurant was swarmed with people who then informed me they had been waiting for almost 2 hours. After talking to restaurant staff, we were told that there was an issue with the GrubHub ticketing system. I understand a busy holiday and so I chatted with GrubHub support to try to get an accurate wait time and inform them that their ticketing system was broken. GrubHub then called the restaurant to check on my order and the restaurant informed myself and GrubHub that they never received the order. At this point, it has been an hour. 30 minutes later after getting nowhere with GrubHub about the miscommunication of service, I approached the restaurant staff again. At this time, they realize that they hadn't even put in the ticket correctly the first time and that they still didn't have my order. During this time, I also watched them tell an (albeit rude) customer that they were out of beef and replaced it with another random item. As I also ordered a dish with beef, this was a concern for me. Then once they verified my order over an hour later and eventually brought my food out they did in fact have beef. So at this point it took me over two hours from when I was supposed to receive my food and I witnessed them lie to another customer about what they had available. Its a Holiday and I understand that, I understand high volume circumstances, but I also work in customer service and to be this entirely unprepared is not acceptable. You have a surplus of customers being mistreated and led to wait, at the very least have decent customer service if things go sideways. Not to mention they told everyone that refunds and cancellations were not an option. I wouldn't doubt if half the customers there never return based on tonight alone. Adding to this review now that we're home. If you have a nut allergy do not order from this restaurant. Nowhere on their menu online does it list that there are cashews in their fried rice and yet now half of my food is inedible. read more
