I spent 3 months in Dallas and by chance walked into A Step up Lounge. This is one of the best places you ever want to try out. It's so diverse yet all the people there have this pride in the bar that all are so good to each other. It's a neighborhood bar that been around for decades. The bartenders are so cool. I only have 3 pictured but there's a Queen B who keeps them all rolling along with the king of cool vests Joe is the coolest guy. I met some good people...from Ceaser, to Scott to a veteran lawyer who gave me the best advice for an interview...which I won as Sr VP. There a lady who sits out back...Allison...one of the nicest people I ever met. Sweet bartender girl with tats all over her and seems intimidating but she's sweet sweet. Another bartender girl, forgot her name, but her and her big burly bearded boyfriend....i love them. She seems angry, but she just doesn't take shit and is a strong character, but such a sweetheart. My other buddy was a little bee for Halloween and her sweet boyfriend a bee keeper.....so cool...she's got such a sweet heart. All these people are so sweet. I'll miss them. I want to say to all that I left suddenly but I'll not forget you...you made Dallas awesome for the Greek guy from Nola. I'll miss seeing Tony in the bar. All of you!!! Much love and see you again. I seen a review that this place has a tournament every Sunday, it's true. BUTTT don't expect the tables to be all that great they're just dynamo tables with worn down felt on top of all that the tables are noticeably uneven. The tournament rules are BAR RULES: * CALL SHOTS (NOT POCKET) * BEHIND THE LINE ON SCRATCHES * 8 HAS TO GO IN CLEAN * ONE RACK PER SET WINNER ADVANCES The place definitely has a funk to it when you walk in and it's very unpleasing. The bathrooms are dirty, I believe the entire place needs to be remodeled. I know it isn't a pool hall but damn is this place gotta be the most ran down spot I've been to in a while. A dive above It's not every day you find a dive worth stopping on your way home. It's in the middle of a two story strip mall and a 7-Eleven. Walk in and you will be amazed by a bar that looks small on the outside but is almost cavernous on the inside. A large island bar in the center with 2nd story loft surrounding it. There are TV screens and pool tables scattered all around. Come for the regulars, who are a mainstay. They are so friendly that it's hard not to strike up a casual conversation. Here everyone knows your name by the 3rd visit. The crowd is mostly older, but the live music days normally brings in younger crowd. My daughter and I stopped in last night on a whim. We are so glad we did! We even did a U-turn to get here haha! Friday night, post dinner drinks. We were welcomed like we were family. Everyone noticed we were not regulars. People were super friendly and chatty towards us. The place was very busy with regulars and It was if our having fun and feeling welcomed was their mission for the night. Lovely, fun, nice, not grab assy, and very respectful people. It's definitely a neighborhood hangout - people from all walks of life come to this 'dive bar' (I really didn't think it as a dive - but that's what they said Dallas Magazine calls it). To me it is a cozy, friendly neighborhood bar. The service was wonderful. There's a patio out back for smokers. There's a heater out there which kept a lot of smokers warm on a cold night. Downstairs there is a pool table, there are live bands a couple nights a week, a second floor which also has a pool table and seating areas. Small dance floor in front of the band. Midnight Rodeo played and they were really good, playing old and new country. The fiddle player did a rendition of Orange Blossom Special which was fantastic! A Step Up carries Seagram's V.O. - my favorite! I was sorry I wasn't going to be back the next day for their 25th Birthday Party. I will be back when I'm in town! Worst service we've experienced by far. The older white lady bartender was rude, yelling, and never gave us our drinks after we asked for them twice. The atmosphere was laid back and not bad for a small bar but the bartender ruined our experience. Would not recommend at all. read more

This a great place to hang out and have a few drinks with friends and the regulars. The bar doesn't look like much tucked away in strip mall that has definitely seen better days. I will tell you the one constant in that strip mall has been and I'm sure will continue to be is A Step Up Lounge. The bar is actually much larger inside then you would think it has two levels and the place could be a great location for a bachelor party. The staff there is very quick to serve drinks and is always on top of making sure your glass or beer stays more then half full. I love the live music on Friday nights is great. The crowd is laid back until they play some great music and then you can see people all over the bar dancing almost anywhere around you. The drinks are stiff and the beer is cold and it is calling you to make your way there. read more

This place is behind a gas station, in a strip mall, next to an old coin store...and I love it. The booze is really cheap, a scotch and soda cost me $2.50. I forgot how pleasant it is to be able to smoke inside and not have to use a plastic cup full of water as an ash tray. My trip home to Dallas really surprised me to find out it isn't illegal to smoke indoors some places. My friends and I were definitely the youngest people in the bar, possibly the youngest people who ever set foot in the bar, but that didn't stop the staff from being very friendly and helpful. The bartender goes around to the tables to make sure everything is okay, and brings you another drink if you want one. They have a Coors light tarp big enough to protect the white house from a flood. read more

You're not going to find prim and proper ladies here. In Game of Thrones, this is a tavern on the King's Road - not a fine dining house in King's Landing. But as with all good stories, you'll find things more interesting out here, away from the hustle of important people and their problems. This might even be up north of the Wall. The service was great; friendly and efficient without a lot of hovering...which is what you want from a neighborhood bar. Last night a band by the name of Blue Lucy played and if you're into an eclectic blend of classic rock, soulful ballads with a sprinkle of pop propelled by some of the best musicianship from first guitar to drums and vocals that I've heard in awhile then you missed out. I will definitely be returning to A Step Up and will keep my fingers crossed that Blue Lucy will be there too. read more

Been back frequently since walking in the door a few months ago. I can honestly say, A Step Up has a great mix of people, music, and a good selection of local brews and imports. The bartenders have great attitudes, super friendly, and most importantly, FAST service. I feel like other bars I've been to in the DFW make me wait for an eternity to get my beverage, or so if feels. Five stars if on Sunday afternoon I could have had something to snack on. I've been in Midway Hollow for three years but had not been in before. I sat alone on a Sunday afternoon but they had a game playing so it was okay. The bartender made a great martini. He wore a "Defend Dallas" t shirt on. Someone needs to give this guy a promotion, he was a taking care of me and my friend, also a ton of others but the thing was that our drinks tasted great! OK.. This is a neighborhood dive bar. But I LIKE that. The bartender "Jimmy" was friendly and there whenever my beer got low. The music was better than average. Drinks were ridiculously inexpensive compared to some of the other local places I had been to this week.
