Years ago I hired A-One to do a service upgrade (replacing an ancient and undersized panel with a modern one). Now I'm looking in the panel and I can see that there's a very obvious code violation: They used NM cable in the exterior conduit, which is expressly forbidden by the National Electrical Code. Should have been THWN wire. Where to begin? Our electrical panel was having some issues with the breaker to the Microwave tripping every few days, we also needed some assistance with flickering lights on the dimmers, and a ceiling fan that would not turn on when the switch was flipped (you had to flip it twice and then it would come on, kind of annoying). They sent an inexperienced electrician out to look at the breaker, the owner even admitted that he wasn't experienced. He was here for about two or three hours and was dumbfounded by everything I showed him. He tried to convince me that the breaker that was tripping was being tripped by a gecko that was in the box when he opened it. That's a pretty strong gecko and very selective in choosing the microwave that is only the 220 volt power supply in the box. It's fine for people to learn on the job, but if he's that inexperienced he should be tagging along with someone until he knows what he is doing. After about two hours of watching this guy scratch his head the owner showed up. She talked a good game and was clearly knowledgeable but ultimately only solved the issue with the dimmers by putting a restrictor on the dimmer switch. She couldn't solve the issue with the ceiling fan and to this day I still have to turn it on twice to get it to work. She told me that she thought there was a motor that needed time to power up inside the fan and that just leaving it on would fix the problem. It didn't. I also pointed out that I have the exact same fan (purchased at the same time) in three other rooms of the house and it turns on in every other room with the simple flick of the switch, just once . . . *crickets. So that was left undone. Now the breaker box. She told me that the breaker box had too much direct sunlight on it and the heat from the sun was causing the breaker to trip. Her solution was to space out the breakers so they weren't lined up one on top of the other. I asked why my neighbors breaker which is right next to mine wasn't having the same issue . . . no answer. Anyway, we went with her suggestion and she spaced each of them out. Now instead of the microwave tripping every two to three days it trips once per day like clockwork. The cherry on top was that she didn't bother to relabel the breakers after she moved them, she just told us which ones were which and we did it ourselves. Charged us $886 for fixing our dimmers, not fixing our ceiling fan and causing our microwave breaker to now trip once per day. read more

I used A-One electric for some rewiring work in a bathroom project. I have not ever used an electrician for anything in my house....usually what I need done is something I can handle on my own (turn off breaker and work on outlets, light fixtures, etc). This time I was needing an expert to prevent me burning down the house. Some major rewiring work. At first I was skeptical of the high estimate Karen gave me...she gave me an hourly price estimate. I hesitate with that because I always am under the impression that they low-ball for the bid on the work and then hit you with a huge cost. I asked for a fixed price estimate and was told by Karen that unforeseen issues can cause the price to be higher on a fixed estimate...whereas the hourly has the potential to be less. I gambled and took her bid. When her two electricians arrived (one master electrician and one apprentice) they were very professional, made sure to ask us any questions before doing any work, and cleaned up after themselves. Best of all, the final price was lower than the original estimate. Not to say that this will always be the case, but I did feel like they were honest with their work and did not try to screw me with a higher cost on the job. Old house with some new problems: My house is 99 years old and is very well-built, with much of the original infrastructure in place, and when it needs attention, it requires a creative approach and a flexible mind. We called A-ONE, received a timely response and evaluation, then a comprehensive and professional bid with what I considered to be a fair price. The job presented a few challenges, but they were overcome and without complaint. Karen, the owner, and the two technicians who completed the job, David and Douglas, were a pleasure to associate with. All of them were forthcoming about the job and our questions, were professional in their approach, were pleasant with a sense of humor, and there was no loud music or shouting. What a blessing. Karen is one of the most unreasonable people I have ever worked with. I needed a separate electrical panel set for a guest house and called Karen for a bid. She came in at $3,185 for PART of the work, while another Master Electrician came in at $1,625 for ALL of the work. When I didn't award the job to her, she became irate and verbally abusive over the phone and in text messages. She even had the nerve to send me a bill for a service call, when I simply had her bid a job. She could never tell me why I should have paid over twice the amount of money to have her do PART of the job! Bottom line, if you need a light bulb changed and don't care how much it costs, Karen is your girl. Great experience getting a couple of items fixed at my house for a real estate transaction.

We reached out to A-One to put an internet line in our office. The Electrician came to our office and began to complete the job. Half-way though the job, the Electrician abruptly stopped and said he needed to go get an extra part. He said he would come back to our office within one hour. The Electrician never showed up. He not only left the job incomplete, he left the office a mess. We called back several times that day asking where the Electrician went. We didn't get an answer until the next day. Karen called us back the following morning. One would assume she would be apologetic for a job incomplete. Boy were we wrong. She called back to let us know we did not pay the $125 service fee. While I was speaking with her to let her know the job was incomplete, she hung up on me during the conversation. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. I called her back and she still remained hostile. As an owner of a service business myself, I am shocked at the level of Karen's lack of respect and empathy towards this situation. Even with the job still remains incomplete, I agreed to pay the $125 Service Fee, which I did, but let her know in return, I would be posting this message to warn others to avoid A-One at all costs. Karen responded very quickly to a voicemail I left her. She was able to come out on the same day to install a dimmer switch for me. The switch was one of two that control the same light, and I was lost on which switch I had messed up the wiring on. Took about half an hour, she explained what the likely issue was, and wasn't bothered that I watched her work because I was curious. She also cleaned up the little dust that came from working on the walls, which was nice. The hourly fee was reasonable. Great experience. read more

First by the owner, Karen Phaup, who came out and looked over the varied issues. Those that she could fix on the spot, she did. For the remaining items, she sent out her technician Justin about a week later. He and his helper Paul got everything done quickly and efficiently. We used this company because the person who installed our outdoor kitchen uses them exclusively. We wanted to add an outdoor outlet and move an outlet inside the house. Our bill was almost $800 for 3 hours of work. I balked at the amount but the owner expected to be paid before she left. We have repeatedly tried to contact her to get a full explanation of why 3 hours of work would equal that much. We did not purchase an expensive outlet, this was all for service. I should have asked for an estimate but trusted that she would treat us fairly. Our contractor for the kitchen said she charges him around $90 per hour. read more

I have used A-one 3 times, the last experience is horrible. I needed a meter box repair on my rental property, Karen was out of town and put me in contact with another electrician who works for her. Her partner estimated it will cost $500~$800. The next day her partner completed the job and gave me the bill of $575. He collected the check payable to A-one and promised to mail me the invoice paperwork. Then the nightmare began, Karen said her partner should not bill me directly and sent me the invoice of $1,235, which is more than doubled of the original agreed bill. In the invoice, she even charged 2 hours charge at rate of $145 per hour for the telephone call. Yes, $290 for the scheduling and bid for the job! She threaten to sue me and it's still not resolved. read more

My best advice when considering using A-One Electric is simply-Don't! I can't recommend this company purely from the standpoint of how high their rates are compared to other companies, their dishonesty with my bill, and the owner's complete lack of concern when I expressed surprise at the exorbitant, incorrect bill. I would recommend shopping around! I called 9 other companies after my bad experience to get an idea of pricing and every single one priced the same job (installing ceiling fans), significantly lower than A-One. I will say that the electrician who came out to install my three ceiling fans was a nice guy and was helpful. But the owner, Karen, was lacking in the customer service area, generally apathetic when I spoke with her on the phone regarding my bill, and dishonest about the bill total! They claimed they worked more hours than they really did and when I confirmed through phone records of the discrepancy-she denied it. This to me is shocking. My experience with this company reminded me that not every business has good intentions and that you always need to make sure to get everything in writing, ask for detailed invoices and receipts and don't trust that a company is going to do the job with the customer's best interest in mind. A-One charged me for hours they didn't work, claimed to have fixed things that I didn't request to be fixed and didn't care when I called them out on it. Definitely learned a good lesson by using this company. Won't make the same mistake twice. Oh- and if you pay with a credit card-they're going to charge you a 3.5% fee. Karen is my go to electrician. She is reasonable, trustworthy, and honest. I have called her on many occasions. She recently installed recessed can lighting in my bathroom. Took the time to ensure everything was lined up, neatly installed, and explained all the different light bulb options. Also made sure everything was covered prior to cutting sheet-rock and cleaned up after installation. Bathroom was cleaner when she left than when she arrived. I continue to refer her to all of my friends and everyone who has contacted her for electrical services has expressed how happy they were with her work and her pricing is very reasonable. I see that others have given A-One high marks, and perhaps they're good for simple stuff, but I cannot recommend them. I had an issue with a bedroom where every time I flipped on a light switch it tripped the breaker for the bedroom. A-One's technician arrived unprepared (without even the right type of breaker to swap into my panel) and without the necessary expertise to diagnose the problem. He looked in the light switch box and, without unscrewing anything, concluded "everything looks right to me". He told me he could hunt around for the problem, but since he didn't know what he was looking for, he would only find it by luck. I told him no thanks. I gave a call to a friend of mine, and he explained that what I was looking for was something that was causing current to leak onto the ground wire, because this would cause the breaker to read a higher than normal change when the switch was flipped, and therefore trip the breaker. I found the problem - a wire with a slice in its protective coating - in the same switch box the technician had glanced in. A one-inch piece of electrical tape and the problem was solved. A-One sent me a bill for $95 for doing nothing. I understand the "trip charge" concept, but considering the details of the trip, I don't think it was deserved. I offered to split it with them ($45) and they said they would take me to small claims court. Nice. read more
