I bought a ticket to Paris during a bout of full blown midlife crisis. For the next six months before my trip I researched every item I wanted to try prior to going on my fantasy trip and one was to have a proper French "peasant" meal. Basically, a meal that people might have at home if they lived on a farm or in the country. I found that comfort meal at A la Biche au Bois, which means " A Doe in the Woods" for those who want to think more inappropriate things... Well... first, I did not think to make a reservation. MAKE A RESERVATION. They were wonderfully gracious and able to find a place for me, but because I did not think of this, I could have screwed up their seating/ schedule for the night. But after a confused look, they found a place for me... in the middle of the restaurant... as a single woman... not awkward at all and I had the best French dinner I had in Paris. The server was a sweet young man who stated he spoke very little English, but held his own very well. The hosts was kind and understanding. Ok, the food! First course: Escargot, yes I've had escargot in the US, rubbery canned snails until recent farms opened. The thing about escargot is they, truthfully in themselves, don't have a spectacular amount of flavor, it is the ridiculous amount of butter, garlic and parsley that's packed into the shells with them that gives them there oomf and these had oomf, but the snails had an awesome texture smooth with just enough chew to make the bread I plopped them on even more delicious! Second course: Coq Au Vin, cock in wine (teehee) this is meant for two people. You CAN order it for one, but you will look like a glutton like I did trying to get evert last potatoe and carrot down your gullet, like I did. It was rich and I was sure I had given myself gout after I finished the whole this. Don't judge me. I judge myself enough. Cheese course: Do I remember the names of the cheeses? No. Were they good? Yes. Was I too full to try for a dessert? Yes. I truly have nothing bad to say about A la Biche au Bois. But please make things less awkward and make a reservation.

Fantastic food, attentive service, classic French food and a great selection of wild game. The venison stew was outstanding. Don't miss this iconic institution if you're in the area. This restaurant was so good I went back the next evening by myself to try something else. Poached eggs with blue cheese, pheasant, cheese, and a dessert. All of it was delicious and very reasonable priced. I had a complimentary aperitif made from black current, and something else chilled, that was delicious. The Bordeaux wine was delicious both nights and I'm not even sure what it was but I don't think you can go wrong. Just let them know what you like and it will be reasonably priced and brilliant tasting. The people that work there enjoy their jobs and the owner/manager is a gruff but conducive character originally from Toronto. He is a kick!

    Eat them slowly.

Deceptively small, this is a heavy weight contender for fabulous French food. It's the real deal de la soupe aux noix. A floor to ceiling mirror makes the restaurant seem far larger than it actually is. (Think a close up of Trump's hands), and even though the tables are linked together like a tapestry there is still enough elbow room to be comfortable. Plus, this may be the best value on two Continents. 33.90 Euros for a set menu of more food than the USC Varsity Football Team could manage in one seating, and yet I did it. The English Menu was the one server who wanted to practice her English and she was terrific. The decor has 60's New Rochelle highlights, but who cares? You came for the food. The Vibe: Open at 7:00 PM and slammed by 8:00 PM with a line down the street as if it was the Stones next Farewell Tour. This place will get as crowded as the Tokyo Tube at prime dinner time, so time your visit accordingly. The Staff: Warm as Poilane Bread. Helpful, charming and genuine in two languages. So, sit back, relax and have a flute of Champagne with a fresh Strawberry to wake up the palate or tip a glass of Chateau Latours 2014 which will go nicely with your Beef or Game or shirt. Just let it breathe while do the same as there will be an onslaught of food too good to leave. Screw the dog. The Food: Yes, it's wonderful. A dozen Escargot de Bourgogne La Donzaine slowly made their way to my table a snail's pace. Lift a shell and see the puddle of Parsley, Garlic Butter and Olive Oil waiting for you and your Baguette. (Much better than lifting your little treasure and realizing you should have changed it's nappies an hour earlier). The Sauce is so good you can forget the Baguette and use a finger. Use two fingers like eating Poi, or simply lilt the pan and lick the thing clean like you're supposed to. The Terrine de Chevueil (Venison with a Foie Gras center) was a heroic slab of something that took three days to make. Four, if you count the huntsmen. Next, came the Canard Savage (Wild Duck) the "Special" for the night, served with extra Sour Cherries and buttery Mashed Potatoes. Most times duck is a typo. But here, it is as advertised. Slightly gamey, but in a good way, it was just ducky. The Beouf Du Poivre was good old tried and true tender Skirt Steak adrift in a sea of Green Peppercorn Cream Sauce. Double Yum. It comes with French Fries for which this place is known, and with good reason. They are uniquely superb. So, let's have french fry talk now. These are creamy on the inside, crisp on the outside and they remained so throughout the entire meal. I thought I wanted the house made Mayo for a dip, but by the time I decided I wanted it, I'd hoovered every damn fry. My bad, and oh so good. The fries were simple and yet complicated, kinda like a part time narcissist. There are no additives necessary for the fries or me. Next came a large tray of cheese to tempt and tease. Go ahead have 10 different slices. You only live once although that might end here. Ponte L'Vec was soft and inviting (think Italian Starlet). Chevre Poivre (Spicy and Worldly). Chevre ave Ash (Like having too much too young). And finally, Cantal which masqueraded as Gruyere but with much more depth and complexity as opposed to a mere nutty afterglow. (Like a Vegas Pro who teaches English during the week at Stanford...many layers. Excuse the reference.) Notwithstanding pants unbuckled after the Pate, it was time for Dessert. Chocolate Ice Cream and Cassis Sorbet which I hadn't seen since the beginning of Haagen Daze and the end of Double Rainbow. The Pruneaux avec Armangac Sauce Vanilla Glace was like a spiritual version of Imodium. If Prunes do it for you (Gods little perfect fruit...or joke) you may hear the commode whispering seductively, "Here's looking at you, kid". Or me, just a regular guy, I will relive this magnificent dining experience often. A la Biche au Bois...Yaw!

Great food, but we felt snubbed by the service. We came here for dinner on a Saturday night. It was not terribly busy, but they were near capacity by the time dinner was in full swing. They offer a set menu, including entree, plat, fromages, dessert for ~33€, which is not a bad deal, so we decided to go for it. I'll start with what went well, and follow up with what didn't go so well. We got a couple glasses of red wine, a Lorrain and Verre de vin to go along with a meal full of red meat. Les Oeufs durs Mayonnaise (Eggs w/ Mayo): Ok! I was hoping for deviled eggs, but these are actually just hard-boiled eggs, sliced in half with some mayonnaise piped on top. The four egg halves sat on top of some lettuce and tomatoes. They tasted okay, but I would have preferred the egg yolks and mayonnaise mixture to be mixed together, you know, like an actual deviled egg. The eggs were also slightly overcooked. Also, the lettuce leaves could have been more fresh. Coq au vin Excellent! Deliciously tender, juicy chicken in very generous portions with large chunks of potatoes. The leg meat was practically falling off the bone. The red wine broth was smooth and luxurious. When it arrived in what appeared to be a Dutch oven with a handle, I was surprised by just how large the portion was. Le Filet de boeuf, frites Great! The thinly sliced filet was cooked to a very nice medium rare with some of the meat juices visibly oozing onto the plate, and drenched in a roux. It was accompanied by an entire plate of French fries Fromage Good! Our waiter presented a platter of cheeses for us to choose from. I thought I was to choose just one, but Mr. Joy asked for one of each, and they cut up large chunks of each type of cheese. I particularly enjoyed the aged cheddar and creamy brie. As for dessert, we didn't get any, because they most likely forgot to serve us dessert. First of all, they stuck us in a table outside, which was fine, because it was a nice night out. However, our table was hidden behind a bush, so as the night wore on, it became very apparent that we were out of sight, out of their minds. That was probably why it took a while to receive each of our courses, ~30 minutes for each course. For the mains, I'm willing to forgive that, but after we finished those, it does not make sense to wait half an hour for someone to bring us cheese. After we finished the cheese, our waiter did not bother to stop by our table for a long time. When he finally appeared, it was clear that they forgot about our dessert, which is supposed to be part of the prix fixe menu. Instead of giving us dessert options, he asked us if we were still interested in dessert, which I thought was a strange question, considering it was supposed to be part of our meal. By then we had waited so long, we decided we didn't wait to wait another half an hour to receive our dessert. We ended up waiting a long time to pay our bill anyway. I definitely felt ignored. When patrons say no to dessert, that should be a clear sign that they are ready for the check and ready to leave. We asked for the check, but once again, he disappeared from our table. Finally, Mr. Joy went to pay at the counter. We found that they still charged us the full price of the set menu, even though we didn't get any dessert. By then we were just ready to get out of there and move on with our lives.

A cute little French restaurant. We ate here on our first night in Paris. I had the grilled lamb chops. It was good, but I thought it could have had a little more seasoning. It came with a delicious slab of herb butter. I just wanted to slather it over everything! I got to try the Le Coq Au Vin. This dish was huge. The chicken was tender and the sauce was so flavorful with mushrooms and potatoes. I loved dipping the bread and fries in the sauce. Service was great for the most part, but it took a little long to get our checks.

    Save room for cheese!!!

No frills, yet a must-do Parisian experience. Was fortunate to get same-day reservations for a group of six at this rustic restaurant located in the Quinze-Vingts, just south of Bastille. Excellent, friendly front-of-house staff complemented a hearty menu of winners. For starters, juicy escargots served as willing delivery platforms for pools of garlicky butter. Coq au vin (for two?) came served bubbling hot in a steel cauldron. Chicken was richly flavored; however, make sure to attack the gravy or leftover meat later in the meal - it's arguably tastier as a cooler temperature allows a better appreciation of more subtle flavors. For a lighter option, salad nicoise was superb, with deviled eggs and tuna topping string beans and mixed greens. Make sure save room - two courses after the main, including three selections off of an excellent stinky cheese platter. And then there's dessert - high points include the creme brulee as well as the chocolate mousse. Might be worth ordering the more adventurous options off of the specials menu. This place is supposed to approximate a hunting lodge (taxidermied animal heads on walls), after all.

All you need to know about this place: far from a tourist trap (thank god!), authentic home-style French countryside cuisine, and vivacious atmosphere packed with Parisians privy to the local hot spots. Important info: Closest Metro: Mº Gare de Lyon Only open Monday through Friday; Mondays 7-11pm; Tuesday through Friday 12pm-2pm and 7-11pm. Closed for 4 weeks between July and August, and Christmas week. Book a table to avoid disappointment! Wander the streets of the Gare de Lyon area, you'll find an array of bistros and brasseries that surround you. A La Biche Au Bois is like stepping into your great aunt's house, as you're greeted with warm and welcoming smiles. The atmosphere is lively, as locals mingle, catch up and laughter fills the air. It's an intimate setting, where you get to cosy up with your neighbours. We had a lovely couple next to us, and a large party of young attractive Parisiennes on the other side. Jovial guests fill the dining room, as the waiters provide attentive friendly service. Lumberjack and I opted for the super generous 4-course menu, which was around 25€ per person. This consisted of a starter, main, cheese, and dessert. I opted for the foie gras (I'm a real sucker for it), which had a supplemental charge. Our meaty mains came with an enormous plate of pommes frites, which were divine. They also feature an impressive wine list, which offers a good value for money. After feasting for what seemed like eternity, Lumberjack and I were stuffed to the brim and satisfied. With the food plus a bottle of wine, it came to around 80€. Not too shabby! Overall, it was a lovely experience that made our day complete. The food coma definitely helped in getting a good night's sleep back at our flat.

Best meal we had in Paris! The reviews were correct. 4 course meal for a great price and lots of options. You will leave feeling VERY FULL! Our server was super nice and explained everything in English for us. Not a ton of vegetarian options but go with someone who likes dif kinds of meat! Salmon and salad was great and the cheese platter was really cool. Love this place, old school vibe

However, it is definitely overshadowed by the rich flavor of the foie gras. This experience was unforgettable, with our view of Parisian streets on a brisk, April night. We even came back on our last night, but didn't realize the hours on Google maps was for the deli. The restaurant closes earlier, before 9:00 PM. They had a number of goods to choose from and I ended up buying a few things for souvenirs. As for the actual restaurant, they had a number of delicious sounding items on their menu. Our server was very attentive to us and helped us decide on our dinner orders. Similar to the other restaurants though. After our food was delivered, it was far in between when we were checked on again. And after dessert it took even longer for our server to bring the bill. Overall, the food was a letdown. I do not exaggerate when I say that the frog legs just tasted like slightly flavored water. My friend's ravioli had a fairly decent flavored sauce but the pasta was a bit chewy. My friend's duck breast was pretty tough; I had noticed the table next to us also ordered it and they seemed to have trouble finishing/cutting theirs as well. As for my steak with foie gras, well the steak was once again tough and the foie gras was weirdly stringy. It was soft for the most part but there were parts that were tough and stringy. Maybe that's a section that's generally separated in the preparation process and it was missed? In any case it was disappointing. What wasn't disappointing was dessert though; perfectly sweet and balanced.

On the other hand, it made me realize that my mother was a terrible cook. Bistro des Augustins is a small, cozy venue offering both indoor seating and terrace seating near Pont Neuf. It serves a small number of curated dishes, including a wonderfully traditional Bistro Gratin in a homey ceramic dish served piping hot with a brown crispy cheesy top, herbs, spices and chicken. You can also get it with salmon. My brothers and I only saw my mother use our gas range to light her cigarettes, sanitize needles to remove our splinters, and make s'mores during the summer months when she couldn't muster the energy to take us 'outside camping.' I mean, all she had to do was borrow a cookbook, which I'm sure were readily available from maybe a neighbor or in any local bookstore or the public library. How hard is that? I was the only kid who brought a can of tuna and his own monogrammed can opener to school every day. Every day. And mom convinced me that the tuna holster she got me for my birthday was cool and hip. I was a naive mercury-filled fool, although I did become a very fast runner in junior high school because of the tuna holster. The interior décor of Bistro des Augustins is informal and vintage bistro style - wooden tables, traditional chalkboard menus, and soft lighting - creating a relaxed and comfy ambiance. My eyes have been opened to what's possible. Thank you Bistro des Augustins for expanding my culinary horizons. Five stars.

When I arrived, there was a rustic table in the entry room where I was seated. I ordered an entrée of mini mushroom raviolis in truffle sauce, a plat of scallops over orzo which had chorizo chunks and a dessert of frozen Grand Marnier soufflé. The portions were generous. I enjoyed the mini mushroom raviolis and delicious Grand Marnier soufflé. The plat was somewhat odd because the chorizo chunks were really strong flavored which overpowered the scallops. I ate one chorizo chunk and pushed the rest aside. The scallops were cooked perfectly but not seasoned. The service was gruff/quite brief with dishes dropped by assistants. My biggest complaint was the stressful ambiance during the meal. It was freezing outside. The door constantly opened and new patrons came in hovering over diners in my room.
