We were all collectively getting over our colds. With our noses running like primary school kids, we sought comfort at A Dong. The group consensus was soup after a small Costco visit on a particularly freezing (and wet) day. I was surprised to see this location on the NW side having been a frequent customer to their NE Location. This location delivered the same flair I've come to know & love from their forum restaurant. Portions were the same. Staff super friendly. I will say to people coming here to stick to their Vietnamese menu. Their Chinese menu is okay, but I wouldn't say it's their forte. Chicken pho is always a favorite. I love ordering fresh spring rolls as an appetizer. If I'm not feeling soup, I'll get vermicelli. On our last visit we got grilled pork with a side of steamed rice and that was SUPER delicious! I can tell they poured more money into decorating this location, the forum location felt more like the original venue (I don't know if it is), and this NW location feels more like a restaurant interior wish-list come true. I really enjoyed it! I will be honest, it might be awhile before I think up this A Dong again. There's just so many other places on my list I'll be going to first, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anybody asking for a delicious hit up near UTSA. read more

We had gone to the movies around the corner.. Senior day ya! Saw this place when we drove in and decided to eat here after popcorn. Boy was that a good idea! We both had 124 mixed beef Pho and spring rolls. I asked if they had tendon and they did not. I was worried it wouldn't have the savory flavor of that but boy was I wrong. I smelled the five spice like smell as soon as it hit the table.. mmmmm so aromatic!! We got all our fixings in it and dug in. Sooo good. I had the pho dac biet and while I appreciate the large portion of pho and sides, I won't be back. I probably only got about halfway through my bowl because the broth was so sweet, and not a good way. The hoisin sauce that they bring out is also a lot sweeter than the typical one which put me off. Been here a few times, every time we travel to San Antonio, n we love it. We always miss Vietnamese food when we travel outside of Houston n this place really satisfies our needs. The kids loves their crispy fried egg noodles (mi xao don) and pho was also decent. Husband & I loved the sweet & sour soup (canh chua Tom) with lemongrass chicken (ga xao xa ot) although the chicken was really good, I loved the thick sauce on it and seasoning was great but u HAVE to eat it with rice or else it's super super salty. I was a little sad since Im not a rice person. I normally only eat a few spoons of rice throughout my whole meal, sometimes no rice at all but I couldn't do it with the chicken this time bcuz it was way too salty and needed huge spoons of plain rice to tone it down. We have only ever got the Vietnamese coffee from here and oh god! its way too good. It takes some time to make as it's a drip style coffee. Then that coffee is poured over ice and then topped with condensed milk. The taste and the strength of the coffee hits all the right notes for me. As soon as it is brought out, the smell makes me swoon. If you are a coffee lover, this is a must try. I am yet to try the food here but I do keep going here for the coffee whenever I am in the area for a movie or something. read more

I come here often with my Vietnamese friends, since there are limited options for good Vietnamese food in San Antonio. While the service is great and the restaurant is kept clean, the food is okay. I order something different every time, hoping to discover a special dish that they make well. Their pho is okay, not as strong and aromatic as I hoped for. The hu tieu (pork broth) is also bland. There's just a richness and tastiness that they're missing in their broths. The bun thit nuong I had once had only a few pieces of meat, some vegetables, and a ton of noodles. I'll give them that much - they are very generous with the noodles in their dishes, and that's about it. I was hoping for more fresh and pickled vegetables at the bottom since they topped it with such little meat, but I was disappointed. It was as unimpressive as all of their noodle soups. I will continue to frequent A Dong for its authenticity and great service. My friends and I always have a good time. However, I wouldn't rave that this place has excellent Vietnamese food or anything. read more

For me , three isn't a bad review- it's just average. However, I visit the restaurant for one dish- the fried chicken wings with fish sauce. The wings are the best! They are hot, fresh, big, crispy, and covered in buttery sweet fish sauce. Amazing!!! The thing that makes this restaurant average is the pho. Not very good at all, tho ok for San Antonio. So It looks like all the good reviews are for the be Vietnamese food cause the Chinese food is baaaad. I stop by for lunch during the week and got the sweet and sour pork meal. Which is my go to meal if I'm trying a new Chinese restaurant. What a mess. The portion size was like a kids meal, turns out that was a good thing. The fried rice (if you can call it that) was very plain and was more like sticky rice. I also order the hot and sour soup ( which doesn't come with the lunch special) and it tasted sweet. We tried this place out on a whim. We just happen to be passing bay and said hey lets eat Vietnamese lol. Greeted and seated as soon as we walked in. Our Waiter was very nice gave food opinions and was fast. He kept our drinks full and made sure we were happy. I ordered Lemon chicken and my husband got Beef Noodle soup. My chicken came in the nugget form with lemon sauce on the side it was really good. A huge portion or rice. Had to take home my left overs. My husbands bowel of soup was huge. He said it was great. I only gave them a four because menu is kinda crazy and doesn't tell you if you get sides or what's going on. But overall we had a great experience. No longer as good. Order my typical Vietnamese rice with char grilled pork + egg cake and the shredded pork is old. I brought it up to the lady on the phone prior to pickup to assure that it isn't and she just asked me to choose something else... I also ended up receiving the wrong order and the lady at the front desk decided to tell me that I ordered the char grilled pork ONLY with rice even though I've never did that and have ordered the same thing over a dozen times. Even if I mistaken and it was fault, she refused to add the shredded pork and egg cake even when I offered to just pay the difference in price. It has gotten worse since there opening. However, the food was not as good as my usual Vietnamese restaurant that I go to. I grew up on Vietnamese food so I can say that this place is authentic, but the flavors and portion to price ratio was not satisfying. I had the shaking beef and the beef cubes were small and had too much soy sauce. This left the meat a bit dry and salty. My significant other ordered the duck and the meat was also dry. The two things that I really enjoyed were the fried shrimp rolls and Vietnamese coffee. However, the price for the fried shrimp rolls were $11. That was more than my entree. read more

We've been here a number of times and enjoy this place and glad they kept the same quality as the original love cation at the forum. Location, easy access off De Zavala and I10 for us. The area is older location but they did a good job with the decor. The place is clean and didn't see anything that alarm us. We usually stay to the booth since its s little more comfortable. As far as service, they try but we understand since they are fairly new but nothing to be concern with. Though one occasion the waitress took refuge wrong order. As for food, there are some that reminds my wife of Vietnam and some that she won't order again. So far we have tried their hot pot and fish dishes and enjoy the pho though not the best. Tonight we had pork in fish sauce, tender but we prefer hers but still good. Pork, egg roll vermicelli which was good and like how they did the pork. And we order the duck which I'm not s duck guy and would rather not comment. Overall being our 5th visit we're still happy. Are they a Vietnamese restaurant run by Chinese people or a Chinese restaurant run by Vietnamese people or a restaurant that serves both Chinese and Vietnamese food? I don't know but their pho tai wasn't great. I can recommend you better Vietnamese and Chinese restaurant. There aren't too many family style Vietnamese restaurants in San Antonio so A Dong fits the niche of a tranquil atmosphere with good service. Unfortunately, the image of family style with full and overflowing portions over a table is lost :( On both my visits, the food was average and the portion sizes were below average. Everything comes plates on a big bed of lettuce with cucumber and tomato slices on the side, which is aesthetically nice. The peppered beef had too much cornstarch and was of a slimy consistency and chewy texture. The traditional meat dishes we got were just sparse but with good flavor. Beef was super tuff, and the chicken were strips tossed in sauce, and struggled to cut the meat. Found 3 hair in the beef meal. Waste of $35.00 but we wanted to try a new place. Very disappointed.
