First time having pho in San Antonio, and as someone coming from Houston where we take Vietnamese food seriously... I have to say, this place was legit! This place was a very special surprise. It wasn't too crowded as we walked in, there were 4 empty tables were dishes were stacked but not bused and a slight smell of acetone from the nail salon next door. All things in my mind brought this down from a 5 star to a 4. Clean up the tables is definitely something the restaurant has control over. We sat down, and the acetone smell dissipated so either I was use to it or they turned down a shared ventilation system. The food though was the big surprise! It was excellent. We ordered the Special House Bun with beef, pork, chicken, shrimp and a crispy egg roll. The proportion of vermicelli noodles to fresh lettuce, carrots, cucumber, bean sprouts and peanuts provide d that perfect bite were one ingredient dominated the other. All the proteins were cooked perfectly. The real winner was the lemongrass Banh mi with once again perfectly proportioned ingredients. We also ordered the fresh spring roll, which never came but wasn't missed except that they did try to charge us for but did remove them. Excellent food. We wanted more meat on the oxtail pho but it was still delicious. We wound up getting two oxtail phos and thr sausage and meat bowl. My favorite spot to get pho!I always order the kids pho and usually ask if I can add the veggies on the side. The portion for me is perfect. The broth is SO good. I usually add hoisin to my pho but this broth is so flavorful that I prefer the flavor without it. The chili oil is also SO good. My family and I came here for dinner tonight, and we absolutely loved everything about this restaurant! The restaurant was so clean and tidy. Our waitress was above and beyond in her kindness. We came in for a late lunch around 2 PM and were happy to see a revamped, professional printed menu--no more handwritten pricing corrections! They now also offer lunch specials seven days a week, which is a great addition, especially since nearby Thai Hut has a similar all-week lunch special. The lunch specials are pretty good and include options like endless iced tea (sweet or unsweet) or soda, plus a fried veggie roll on the side--although no soup is included, which Thai Hut does provide. Comparing the two, I'd still say Thai Hut has the edge with more flavorful, freshly brewed iced tea, while the tea at Pho Viet tasted watered down both initially and with the refill. I ordered the orange "chicken" (subbed with tofu), and it was delicious and nicely prepared, as was my cousin's orange chicken. My aunt enjoyed her steak brisket tendon pho--the broth was perfect, rich, and flavorful. My uncle had the grilled pork chop, and he was happy with his choice as well. So overall, everyone's meals were tasty and well-executed! Walked in yesterday at 7:15 and the place was fairly busy so we gave them some time to greet and seat us. We noticed most of the tables that were empty still had food and dishes on them and were still waiting to be cleaned and it was unsightly. After waiting 7 minutes awkwardly in front of the restaurant and being ignored we sat at an empty booth we thought was clean and realized there was food on the benches. We sat there trying to not be grossed out and realized the people next to us were not happy and had been waiting there for some time with no drinks or service. That was it! We have been going here since we moved to this area. Today the service was great, the food was tasty, but the Pho was skimpy on meat. There is usually more protein in the Pho, which is what we're used to here. Also, the chicken wings were tasty but sadly undercooked. We really like this place. This is hands down the best pho I've had in San Antonio. They've got a ton of authentic dishes on the menu, including oxtail pho which I've yet to find anywhere else in SA. I got a classic pho tai chin; the broth was so good. It was seasoned well during cooking and was very clear. There was a nice layer of visible fat on top that gave it a nice mouthfeel. The noodles were cooked just right, not over or under cooked, and the meat was flavorful and tender.
