What a great place. After running an errand at lunch, I didnt want fast food so thought, "what the heck" and stopped in to A Dong. The menu has a lot of options but I decided on the chargrilled pork w/vermicelli noodles. On the standard menu its a Bun. The lunch specials come with choice of soup and a spring roll. Since I didnt want soup, the kind server gave me an extra spring roll. Im calling the roll a spring roll but it is slightly bigger than a spring roll and smaller than an egg roll. My food was very, very good. The grilled pork was the perfect toasty on the outside but tender enough to cut with my fork. The spring/egg roll was perfect. Finally an egg roll that is not greasy. FIRST TIME VISIT! Stopped by on a whim and glad I did! It's a cold winter afternoon in San Antonio and I was craving some hot tea and Asian food. This place is just 7 mins away from my office, so it was a perfect time to try them out. Parking is easy in this large shopping center and they are in a spot that is easy to locate them once you turn off De Zavala and into the shopping center. I ordered the #105- charcoal grilled pork chop chunks w/rice and pickled veggies, fresh cucumber and I added a fried egg. It came with a spicy, sweet sauce that is likely fish sauce based. The food is really good quality! The pork was very tender and the marinade is a bit sweet, classic Vietnamese. I would def recommend this dish with the egg. There are no TVs but they do have music playing overhead, sounds like modern pop music. I had to Shazam a few songs, though. Yes, I am THAT out of touch with current pop culture. Ordered the chow mein special it was lunchtime so there's several dishes that are $12.99. That include soup your choice, sweet-and-sour, wonton, or egg drop . the wonton soup was delicious. Then I ordered the special chow mein. It had shrimp, chicken and beef. This dish did not come with rice because it already have the chow mein. It was absolutely delicious. This past Wednesday, we visited a restaurant we haven't been to in years. A Dong Restaurant serves both Vietnamese and Chinese dishes. Hubby and I both had the Coconut Drink that was very refreshing. Love the fresh coconut meat! Dad had Soy Bean Milk. We started off with the Vietnamese Egg Rolls and Crab and Corn Soup. The soup tasted good but the crabmeat was not the star of the dish. Hubby had the Beef Rice Noodle, which is one of his favorite dishes. I tried some and it was tasty. Dad and I shared the Stir Fry Vermicelli Combo without the curry since we didn't like spicy. Please note: I am Viet and from Houston. I had to add that because I will say for San Antonio - they place is good enough if you are craving Viet food! Did not have the pho that most non-Viets would probably believe Viet food is about but ordered squid, noodles, chinese broccoli and fish. If you ever want to venture outside of pho, be sure to bring at least four people so you can eat family style! I will say you can definitely taste the MSG and salt in their dishes. Food came out fast. Service is on par with typical Asian restaurants - don't expect high quality service. As someone else mentioned, I think they like to make their own hours so I would call to make sure the restaurant is open. Stopped into this area Vietnamese/Chinese restaurant for lunch with a group of work colleagues. I was the only one in the group who had a Vietnamese dish, though, and I ordered the beef vermicelli bowl along with an order of fresh Summer rolls (shrimp and pork) with peanut sauce. Both were done well and tasted fine. The Summer rolls were a bit heavy on the leaves and didn't have as many sprouts as I like. Also, the peanut sauce was a little thinner than I like as well. Looking for places that serve tofu as part of their proteins, in Texas is like looking for a needle in a haystack lol I came in to look at the menu, and saw they have tofu, so opted to sit down and eat. Was allowed to chose where I wanted to sit, and server promptly came over to ask about refreshments.. Service overall was very friendly, quick, and attentive. The portion was easily for 2 people or 2 meals, I came hungry so are just over half and still had a good amount of leftovers. Food was made fresh, it came out hot and tasty, and all very reasonably priced. They provided me a Take Out Menu in case I'm interested in placing to-go orders... they have a great menu. I understand that everyone is understaffed and overworked, but the restaurant was empty, and it's a small business, so I expected butter service. It was the first time since I met up with my family in a while, and we did not feel welcome. It was disappoint. In addition, we were charged pre-charged tips, which is understandable since it was a big family, but the service we received was not equivalent to the tips we were charged. One of the best Vietnamese places in SA hands down, the seafood combination pho broth is out of this world, who new something so light could be so packed with savory comforting flavors! They're beef combination pho is no slouch either, it really feels like the most comforting homely food you can get. Their Vietnamese egg rolls really are addicting with that sweet and tangy fish dipping sauce they serve them with and make the perfect compliment to their large selection of Pho's or vermicelli bowls. Beef Fleming steak and beef with Chinese broccoli are both solid dishes as well, but that's how it goes with most of their food here, I really haven't gotten a disappointing plate. Theirs menus is large and they have a variety for everyone weather you like Vietnamese dishes or more tamed Chinese American dishes it really is a good place to come over and over again. Portions are always large with if flavors, perfect place for lunch or a casual dinner. The goat hot pot was delicious, but not what is typically considered a hot pot if you have been to a restaurant that specializes in them. The meat was precooked and in chunks. My husband ordered his entrée extra spicy. When he told them there was no spice at all, the reply was that they don't make the meals spicy because someone complained after they made that request. The brown sauce was light in flavor and the chicken had an unpleasant taste to me. Overall, it was mostly tasteless when everything was combined. The music was too loud for dinner conversation. My dinner companion described the Adon fried rice as average. However, the service was prompt and attentive. The staff checked in on us regularly. Despite the decline in the ambiance and food quality, the restaurant still had a decent customer service. The menu options were diverse with a good range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. It's disappointing to see a once thriving restaurant lose its charm. The lack of attention to detail is evident in the deteriorating condition of the dining area and the neglect of the wine bottles. My son and I were starving, I looked up places on Yelp and we decided to try this place for the Chinese food. It truly was a long time since we have had Chinese food and the food was delicious. The meat was tender, shrimp was on point and the chicken had the perfect level of spice. This is a restaurant with both Chinese and Vietnamese food. I posted a picture with the hours, open 7 days a week with lunch specials, and located in the parking lot of HEB on Dezavala Road. The server and staff were very pleasant making the experience memorable. The reason I gave it 4 stars was lack of cleaniness, especially in the bathroom, I agree with the previous yelp review. This place is the first place in San Antonio where my son and I truly loved the Chinese food. I will be back to try the Vietnamese food and lunch specials in the near future. This location of A Dong is very different pretty and clean. The service was great while we were there for lunch. Plus, our food came quickly. Forgot pictures this time but it was all delicious and didn't last long. Only complaint was that the crab Rangoon (dumplings) were slightly over cooked. The first time I tried this place I ordered their dinner specials which is mostly composed of Chinese food which was meh. But, when I went there to try their combination pho, it was so much better. Mind you, I did take out both times. If you're gonna go here, get their Vietnamese food. The young man who was at the front was very nice. I ordered the Vietnamese egg soda which they make when you first arrive so that is at peak freshness when you drink it and it was quite refreshing. Food is good, likely one of the best you'll find for Vietnamese/Chinese food in San Antonio. They offer an extensive menu and very spacious dining space. My go-to dishes here would be the Bun Xao Singapore (stir fry vermicelli curry noodles) and the wonton noodle soup with bbq pork. Both are delicious! My only complaint is the slow service. Orders are taken in good timing, but the wait for the food to arrive is slow. This is usually not a common occurrence in Vietnamese restaurants and hard to manage if you have kids in tow. Something has changed here from 5 years ago and not for the better. The hot and sour soup was one of the worst tasting soups I have ever had. The kung pao chicken was terrible. I had a horrendous experience at this restaurant and not even sure where to begin so I'll do it chronologically. I walked in on a late Saturday afternoon and there were only a small table of customers there. The first thing I noticed was the blaring vulgar rap music being played. Having no intention of eating there, and just picking up a to-go order, I decided to go ahead and give them a try. As I was waiting I noticed a sign on the register that stated something to the effect that if they made a mistake with your order then you were out of luck. I didn't think much of of it although I had never seen a sign of this nature anywhere before. After my experience, I can only assume they make a lot of mistakes. Unfortunately, they did mess up my order. I ordered shrimp fried rice, which was fine, and an order of chicken fried rice that turned out to be pork. Not having time that day to return it, I went first thing Sunday morning to ask if they could provide the chicken I paid for, not even expecting them to provide a replacement meal or more rice. The employer fumbled around for several minutes trying to find the order, and after he did, got someone from the back who walked up with other employees. He was adamant that he served chicken which was untrue. I told him it smelled like pork, looked like pork, and tasted like pork. Several people at my house confirmed it was pork. He then very rudely told me he wouldn't provide the chicken I ordered and paid for, so I walked out telling him how rude he was and that I would inform other people of the way he does business. During many decades of eating in restaurants I've never met anyone so unreasonable about admitting to and correcting a simple mistake. Please do not frequent this establishment.
