When considering to get a cake to celebrate my boyfriend's graduation, my friend highly recommended A Cake Life and I am so glad he did. We set up a consultation with Kristin to discuss what I wanted for this cake. She was very patient and understanding as I was super indecisive about how to design the cake. Kristin was very helpful in providing suggestions and showing us some of her previous cake designs. She was able to incorporate all the elements I wanted in the cake in one cohesive and clean design. I loved how customizable this cake was and how talented Kristin is as she can design so many things. What I absolutely loved was her process to order the cake. She was very timely and responsive to my follow up questions after consultation. Once I provided her with the images and color I wanted to use on the cake, she put together an order form that described the cake to a T so I knew exactly what I was paying for. The order form included the sketch of the cake and the images I provided. If the order form looked good, then I could pay for the cake online. It was the easiest and simplest process I ever went through. When I picked up the cake, it looked good...but there was a miscommunication. One of the images on a poker chip was the wrong image (there were two different designs of poker chips in the image I sent so I totally understood what happened and why). I let one of the team members know and they fixed it for me on the spot! I really appreciated how they fixed it too - not only did they apologize (even though it was my fault for not being more specific), they fixed it then and there and made no fuss. For my husband and I, it was not about the look of the cake or the layout of the dessert spread. It was about how great everything tasted. We decided to go with A Cake Life because they had nothing but great reviews. Mind you, we were going in blindly at first because our wedding was a destination wedding. About a year from our wedding (we were in Hawaii for a wedding anyway), we booked a tasting with ACL through their website and we chose about 6 of their signature flavors to try. The worst part was narrowing down the flavors to what we wanted because each flavor tasted so good! They weren't too sweet or too heavy either! Kristin also designed the cake based on what our vision was--as we were talking she was already drawing and coloring. She also designed the layout for the dessert spread right then and there also. We went with a MIDI Dessert Table: a 2-tier cake, cupcakes, mango crème brulees, cake shooters, donuts, and macarons. Everyone could not stop talking about the dessert table! ESPECIALLY the macarons! They were the best macarons we've ever had! We loved that ACL was within our budget and that they were flexible. I was so excited when I saw the deal pop up on my IG feed on Thursday. $45 for a gorgeous 6" layered Cookies and Cream Ganache Cake. I set my phone alarm for 9:30am on Friday (the time the cakes for sale were to be posted) and hoped to be one of the first callers. No one was going to beat me to my cake! I got through quickly, paid for the cake over the phone and picked up my cake the same day. It was that easy. The cake was ready to go at the time I stated. Fabulous customer service! The cake was beautiful and impressive... would've been perfect if I had somewhere to take it to! I ended up cutting and serving the cake to my family for dessert. It was good, but not the best cake I've eaten. The cake part was a on the dryer side. It was a Devils Food cake, chocolatey, but not rich. It was slathered with Cookies and cream in between. This flavored cream was good, but the frosting on the top and sides was a bit sweet. The cake as a whole, even though it was beautiful was not quite as indulgent as I wanted it to be. Super disappointed that I went with this company for my wedding cake. I ordered a small 6in cake, 1 tier and it tasted disgusting! The fondant was about an inch thick luckily I was able to cut through. Inside was dry and fell apart easily and was way too sweet. I ordered a Yellow butter cake with lilikoi cream. Fondant = gross. I'm used to eating soft cuttable cakes so this is new to me. After I finished eating my slice, the fondant stuck to the plate and would not scrap off. It took forever for me to clean my plate! Imagine what it is doing to your insides! Luckily this cake was just for my husband and I since we did a beach wedding with no guests. If there were guests, I would be super embarrassed about this cake! Now if you are to go with this cake company, I would recommend you to go in to do a cake tasting. I couldn't since I'm from the Bay Area and you have to order way in advance. I would also recommend no fondant and to tell them to tone down the sweetness. I can't tell you whether your cake will be dry inside or fall apart but at least it will be edible if you make these changes! Design wise, the cake was beautiful and just what I asked for. After sending inspirational photos the cake turned out perfect and what I wanted which was Mickey and Minnie in love with Happily Ever After written on it in a fairy tale script font. This company is known for beautiful cakes and looked too beautiful to eat! So 2 stars: one for design and one for the quick and prompt email responses. Sometimes I wish I had an event just to catch those $45 cake deals. Lol My sister just graduated high school and didn't want a celebration but I decided to get her a cake to congratulate her. I scored on one of the #ACLFlashSaleFriday deals which was a 6" coconut cake with coconut cream filling. It was described as a white semi-naked buttercream with chocolate drip, meringue cookies, and macarons as a cake topper. It was the most appealing of the bunch that was being sold that day. I called immediately at 9:30 a.m. and got through with my order over the phone quick and easy for pick up later that day. I work in Waikiki so it was on the way home to pick up the order. The location is located in a small shop on south king street. The parking there is really limited. I kept circling around for 15 minutes and couldn't find parking. I then called Kristin to see if someone would just drop it outside. But they went out of their way and had me park in their employee parking. Talk about great customer service! The packaged was well wrapped for my ride home and it was a quick sign off for me to acknowledge that I received it. I went home, surprised my sister and she was happy with the cake. You can always cut it bigger but not smaller. If you cut the hole too big you can transfer to a little ziploc and cut that corner. -Outline your cookies with icing, then flood them. The border outline will help to contain your icing. -Allow each layer of icing to dry, then add on the next color on top. -Add sprinkles when icing is still wet so it sticks to your cookies. -Don't worry about making mistakes, because it'll take you few cookies before you learn how to properly control your icing. -Have funnnnnnnnnn! Let me start off by saying that we have been a fan of A Cake Life. We got our wedding cake from them, and we bought their cookie decorating kits. We wanted to support this small local business. However, our most recent experience was just HORRIBLE. It started about two weeks ago, when I sent A Cake Life an email and DM through IG asking if they could make a vegan cake for my wife's birthday. I got an email back pretty quickly letting me know it could be done. I'm thinking - GREAT! I immediately emailed back asking about the price, flavor of the cake and providing the info they requested. I also requested a pick up a day before my wife's birthday. I didn't get a response. So, I sent a follow up email. No response. I wait a few days. Still, no response. So, I contact them on Instagram, and I get a message informing me that I will be getting an email shortly. A few days before my requested pick up date, and I still didn't receive the email response I was told I would get. No email confirmation, no confirmation on the price of the cake - NOTHING. Through this all, I'm relying on their initial response that it could be done. I AGAIN reached out to them via Instagram, and I FINALLY received an invoice - this is after multiple follow ups by both email and IG. For the vegan option they added on an extra 20 dollars (1/3 the price of the cake). I was not told this from the start - even though I was clear from the start that I wanted a vegan cake. When I brought this to their attention, the response I received was that they were "very busy" and that I should place orders "3 weeks to 30 days in advance". I asked them from the start if they could make the cake, and I was told yes. At no point was I told it couldn't be done. What upset me even more was: 1) A Cake Life is advertising and posting on IG all the speciality cakes they can make. There is no mention to order 3 weeks to 30 days in advance. 2) I asked if they could make the cake up front in my initial email. At no point did they tell me it was too short a timeframe. 3) I had to continually follow up on IG and email. 4) I relied on our initial contact that it could be done - when, I would've understood if they were too busy or it was too quick a turnaround. Now, I'm without a cake for my wife's birthday. It felt like A Cake Life was shifting the blame to me by responding that I should've ordered the cake "3 weeks to 30 days in advance." Well, A Cake Life, you should've been more responsive. Their IG account is full of posts (sometimes multiple posts in a day!) But, they can't seem to follow up on emails and respond to customer inquiries??? It's absolutely unacceptable to put the blame on the customer for the lack of responsiveness and dropping the ball. I am beyond disappointed in the customer service that I received - especially, since we have been loyal customers for years. read more

Wedding has come and gone. While they were so easy to work with and awesome (everything came on time, it looked exactly as discussed, very professional and kind and understanding) The cake was not as good as the samples I had during the tasting. We had 2 different sheet cakes at the ceremony for a champagne toast following the ceremony, and a 3 tier cake for the reception with 2 additional sheet cakes for desert following dinner- 5 cakes total. The sheet cake at the ceremony (guava with lilikoi frosting) and chocolate/peanut butter) were good- the chocolate was dry though. I would say it was acceptable in terms of texture and freshness,but the chocolate left more to be wanted. At the reception, the 3 tier was moist, but the sheets cakes were not very good. They were dry and crumbly, and the white cake with strawberry frosting did not taste the same as I remembered at the tasting, although it was moist in comparison to the chocolate. Overall, with such a bulk order I understand if some cakes were made ahead of time considering we ordered 5 and also I am sure they have many other jobs the same week. However, I thought it was disappointing that the constancy of the cake was not the same as I remembered, nor the taste. I don't know if this is enough to NOT book them again, but something to consider. read more

My fiance and I were able to take it to taste and share small bites with my family as well. Let me just say- ALL THE FLAVORS WERE GREAT! Fast forward we ordered a two tiered cake pretty much via email as we returned to California. We got quick responses and suggestions that fit within our budget. On our wedding day, I did have a panic moment as I hadn't heard from A Cake Life at all, but when we showed up for the reception there are cake was! It was beautiful and everything we dreamed of. Kristin and her team are awesome. She made my beautiful wedding cake back in 2012 and I still remember all of my guests raving about how delicious it was! 6 years later, even with all her accomplishments on being top featured on the Knot, Wedding Wire, wedding magazines and receiving endless awards- she is still the humble Kristen that I spoke to years ago. I needed a cake made last minute for my gf and she made it happen. The day of pick up was an absolute mess. I was stuck in north shore when I was supposed to be picking up the cake. Kristen and her crew were setting up a wedding elsewhere and had to close the shop so I didn't know what to do as my friends celebration dinner was that very night. That's when Kristen's sister offered to stay open so that I could rush back to town to pick up the cake, even though they were supposed to be closed. Ahh! You guys are the top for good reason- not only are your cakes GORGEOUS and yummy.. but your customer service is superb and I will never forget the favor that you guys did for me Thank you again and btw, the cake brought tears to my gf's eyes when we surprised her that evening :) love you guys! read more
