Pastries bought this morning cinnamon roll and lemon chiffon perfect for coffee. Good place for coffee too. Always crowded.
Puʻuwai Bakery has been on my radar for a while because I was curious about their vegan offerings. I'm not vegan myself, but I do enjoy trying vegan options from time to time. When I learned they also make custom cakes, I decided to order one for a coworker's farewell. I needed a cake that was gluten-free, dairy-free, and nut-free. She can tolerate gluten and dairy with consequences later, but she has a severe nut allergy, so finding something safe for her was the top priority. I wanted to make sure she could finally enjoy a cake without worrying, since she's eaten other farewell cakes in the past, but suffered later. I reached out about two weeks in advance, and Franceska was incredibly kind and helpful throughout the process. Mondays are limited to custom cake pick-ups within a 2-2:30 pm window, and the day I went happened to coincide with a forecasted storm. I texted to confirm they'd still be open since other businesses were closing, and she reassured me they would be. The cake itself was adorable. The simple design and color palette were beautiful, and my coworker loved it. She chose chocolate ganache with lilikoi buttercream, and the lilikoi flavor was especially lovely; subtle but bright and balanced, and it really tied everything together. Texture-wise, the cake was a little drier than traditional cakes and had a slightly different aftertaste, but that's understandable given the dietary restrictions. It actually grew on me, and most importantly, my coworker was able to enjoy it safely and loved it. If you need desserts that accommodate dietary restrictions, especially vegan or allergen-friendly options, Puʻuwai Bakery is definitely worth considering.
The frosting is so rich and creamy. Cannot believe there is no dairy. It definitely has the best texture when it is room temperature. I am glad I went with the lilikoi (passion fruit) flavored cake and frosting. The cake is not dry. The cupcakes were good. I am not a sweets person so I probably would've enjoyed more of the baked goods but we were in a rush and a lot of items were sold out. The cake and cupcakes were for a birthday party. Baguettes and bagels are in my future. Parking is poor. You can park right in front if you are quickly picking up - but it is not a legitimate parking space. Parking next door is the cheapest option. It charged us $0.60. Probably cost more to process the card. There is also parking across the street. Didn't bother to look at prices.
The baker was so wonderful and took my very last minute, day before order for a small cake for my daughter who cannot have gluten dairy or egg. The cake came out beautiful and tasted like a regular cake! I was impressed.
Decided to try Pu'uwai Aloha Bakery as they specialize in gluten free, dairy free cake. We ordered a 8" single layer minimalist cake ($70.00 USD) for our wedding. Went with the guava flavour and lilikoi icing. Cake looked beautiful and was delicious to boot.
WOW! We celebrated our daughters 13th birthday and she is allergic to dairy so finding a cake for her isn't easy. I ordered her the lemon cake with strawberry frosting and it was beyond AMAZING!!!! I am so glad I went with Pu'uwai bakery! I needed a last minute (one week) smash cake for my son's first birthday. Communication via email, was very easy from the get-go. Fransesca captured what I needed for my son's cake as far as design and added ingredients. It was so cute and tasted amazing! She uses the best ingredients, and my daughter said it smelled "healthy" in the bakery when she picked up the cake. Wonderful experience overall and will be coming back soon!
I was on the hunt for gluten free, sugar free, dairy free birthday desserts for my boss and found Pu'uwai aloha bakery. I contacted franceska and found that I could get a vanilla and chocolate cupcake with all those requirements. I got one of each and three with sugar in it: Lilikoi, guava and strawberry. I picked it up from the church of the crossroads near UH. Review of cupcakes: my boss had the vanilla and chocolate cupcakes and thought those were better than the bite she had of the Lilikoi. I am not a fan of sugar free items so I had the Lilikoi cupcake. Surprisingly it was pretty good. I thought it was a bit dense not airy and light like normal cupcakes. But I think everyone enjoyed it, even the whipped topping. Each cupcake was $8 and I was pleasantly surprised at the cost. I ordered it 6 days in advance and was able to pick it up by 9 am.
We've ordered several cakes from here and they're all wonderful! They taste amazing and the design of each is stunning - we order all our special cakes from them, like my son's first birthday, a smash cake, and also our gender reveal cake for our second baby! If you're looking for delicious gluten free option this place is worth trying! I was very impressed with them being able to take my "moon child" idea and transform the cake into something spectacular with the decorations we provided them!
It was a Wednesday when a co-worker said she had been craving cake- little did I know her birthday was fast approaching. I had little time to find a bakery or a place that would meet her dietary needs - Gluten Free & Vegetarian. However Pu'uwai Aloha Bakery came to the rescue, like an oasis of water in a dessert of carnivores and gluten eaters; a spot light in my google searches! I checked out their web page, and the photos of their beautifully crafted cakes and cupcakes. Out of all the google options, they were the best that I could find. I filled out an order form, crossing my fingers they would get back to me before the birthday deadline. (Which they did, with in a few hours. I was relieved) As my cake order was less than the 5 days they prefer, I did accept their 20% fee for rushed orders, and it was worth every penny. I gave them as much time as possible, saying i could pick up right before the store closed, as it was truly my fault they would have to rush the order. Pick-up was incredibly easy. Finished cakes are ready to be picked up at Sugarlina at Ward. While your there you can pick up cup cakes for the neigh-Sayers of GF/Veg food, and even grab a Happy Lemon treat- there are so many delicious reason you should consider ordering a cake from this bakery. Once you get to Sugarlina, you just let the employee know you're picking up, and retrieve your order- absolutely painless. I gave the baker creative freedom, and i could not be more satisfied with how beautiful it turned out. The cake it self was extremely well received. My co-worker was stunned, she told me she never had a cake like this. I had asked earlier for a list of the ingredients for her. She said that usually there is something that has gluten - but she was shocked that all the ingredients met her requirements. If you were unaware that this cake was GF & Vegetarian, you would be none the wiser. This CAKE was magnificent! The flavor of the lemon cake to me was subtle and not overpowering it was nice. The strawberry frosting was perfect- the cake it self was over all refreshing. I should have had another slice! Birthday girl loved the cake so much she took the rest home to indulge herself more- as she should! I would 100% order another cake from this Bakery. Customer service is also great. I never once felt like I was inconveniencing them, with my asking for a rush order to asking them for a list of the ingredients! Super Pleasant experience. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
OMG. If you're looking for a delicious SUGAR-FREE CAKE, this is the place! The staff was super friendly & accommodating and their cake really made my uncle's bday extra special. I messaged a few places last-minute on Monday looking for a sugar-free cake for Thursday. Keep in mind that Tues was the 4th of July. I got one other response from another bakery saying they don't do sugar-free and to try Whole Foods--apparently finding a sugar-free cake on this island is tough, not too many places offer them, especially within a few days notice. Susan, from Pu'uwai Aloha bakery responded right away and said they could def make my cake. I had no idea what kind of cake I wanted, I just needed it to be sugar-free & feed 8-10 people and I was hoping for some fruit on top. She recommended the chocolate cake with buttercream frosting topped with fresh berries. It was amazing! The whole fam really enjoyed it and my kids were asking for seconds, "because mom--there's no sugar in it!" The bakery was easy to find and super cute, so glad I found this place! Cute lil bakery right next to Kamamalu Market. Checked this place out and got their strawberrt chocolate chip cake and quiche to go. They used to be at the Ward Farmer's Market before. Apparently this bakery is a gluten free kitchen FYI if you're allergic to gluten.
I recently ordered a fully gluten free cake from Pu'uwai Aloha Bakery & I have to say they exceeded all of my expectations! I know it can be difficult to find gluten free baked goods that are not dense but this vanilla cake was wonderful. It was soft & tasty. The Lilikoi frosting was fantastic. Not too sweet and very lite. In my order request, I requested if they could do fresh fruit and flowers in a simple design. I didn't know what to expect and my expectations were low because I was thinking it would be similar to a store bought cake design (Sorry) Upon picking it up and to my surprise, it was so beautiful! The design was perfect. Simple but cute. Everyone loved the cake and even asked where I got it from. We will definitely be back. If not for my friend, for myself. lol! Thank you!
Love that this island has so many options for so many different tastes and needs. Pu'uwai Aloha Bakery specializes in gluten free baked goods. Have been wanting to yry them when they were previously located on Lusitana St (extension to Alakea). Now that they are at the beginning of Smith Street, oceanside of Smith and King, its an even more convenient stop. Tried the snickerdoodle cookie and the everything but the gluten bagel. And while the tastes and textures were not to my liking, the fact that they are gluten free is a huge plus. I have enjoyed their made to order cakes before. Would definitely return for that as well as try some of their other offerings. read more
On the hunt for a sugar-free cake for our toddler's birthday in a couple of months, I stopped in to give Pu'uwai a try. They're located in the old Blondie's spot. Plenty of parking on the street, municipal lots, or the paid lot nearby. Space is cute. Nice seating inside and out. I got a scone, cinnamon roll, and cookie. Also wanted a brownie, but they sold out when I got to the counter. Might try the preorder system next time, as they sell out of items pretty fast. In terms of flavor, good all around. Cookie was my least favorite, as I don't like a soft cookie. Scone was super moist. I got the scone for my wife, but I was surprised how good it was. Cinnamon roll was also tasty, especially the sauce and topping. The texture of the roll itself was on the firmer side but still good. I don't have any dietary restrictions beyond being an octo-ovo veggie, so this is coming from someone who eats dairy. Prices are on the higher side, but I think that's kind of expected because of the quality. Service was good. Rating? Probably a strong 4, but I'm rounding up because places like this are rare. read more

I placed an order for three gluten free cupcakes when I was in LA before my trip to Honolulu. I texted the contact person listed on the website. The cupcakes were delicious and beautifully decorated in a lovely box. Local pickup was arranged in a parking lot and I paid via Venmo upon pickup. So I am allergic to milk and my amazing husband found this bakery. Turns out she's a one woman show and made the most delicious and dairy free cake I've ever had. Every bit of this cake was not only gorgeous but incredibly tasty. I can't thank her enough for this perfect birthday cake! My husband pre-ordered and did all communication via text . Great hole in the wall shop. Love that it's gluten free and made fresh. If you go too early in the morning, they wont have all their selection ready for the day yet as they are still baking it. I researched and messaged a few bakeries in Oahu since I was looking for a smash cake for my son's first birthday, but I was really intrigued when I came across Pu'uwai Aloha, who makes cakes with certain dietary restrictions like sugar free, gluten free, vegan, etc. I reached out through their website, and I had to call them to follow up, but after that Franceska responded and it was easy to communicate with her. She had me send some inspo pics and gave me the option of adding an inscription or berries and flowers to the top. She was helpful in suggesting cake and icing flavors that would work well but keeping everything lower in sugar. We decided on a strawberry guava cake with a lilikoi buttercream. Franceska warned me that the buttercream would be more buttery with less sugar. We found the bakery fairly easily, in a more residential area. There were a few street parking spots right out front. Franceska was putting the finishing touches on the cake and I figured I'd browse their selection of other baked goods while I waited. Lots of vegan options and lots of savory options in addition to sweet items. Our smash cake was perfect! I was so happy with it. First, it was the perfect size! I've seen smash cakes wayyy too big, that a one year old will definitely not even make a dent in and makes for a lot of waste (unless you can salvage it after the smashing to share with others). The design matched exactly to the pictures I had sent. The berries and flowers on top were the perfect touch. I was so excited to have smash cake photos done when I saw the cake. Finally, we got to dig in! My one year old and three year old had first dibs and they both looked to be enjoying the cake from the berries (they might have even eaten the flowers), the buttercream frosting, to the cake itself. Then us parents got to get a few handfuls in. I forgot to bring some utensils so it was a true smash cake for us all. The cake was moist and the flavor was really good. The buttercream was deliciously buttery. It obviously wasn't sweet since it was made with less sugar, but it also wasn't bland or lacking. In fact it was just as good and flavorful as any other cake I've had in recent memory. Very very happy we went with Pu'uwai Aloha Bakery and would love to order another cake for a special occasion when we're near again. With the low sugar option, it is a great option and guilt free for the whole family! read more

Wonderful little gluten-free bakery! I reached out to Franceska with a last-minute request for a smash cake that's low in sugar for my baby's first birthday, and she was able to put it together within a couple days. I was so incredibly grateful considering other places typically have pre-order restrictions. When I went to pick up the cake, I of course grabbed a couple of yummy goodies while I was there: a zucchini frittata, and ube cake. They also had some delicious free samples. The frittata was on the lighter/fluffier side, and since it had zucchini, it was a bit watery, but my baby and I loved it. The ube cake was moist and quite dense, and the portion size was quite generous. It was more than enough for my husband and I. The owner mentioned that her turkey cheddar sandwich is the one that sells out pretty quickly, we made a note to come back for that one. If you're looking for a gluten-free bakery, this is the place to go to! Just a heads up though, it can be challenging to find street parking. It took us several tries going up and down the streets, so my husband parked at a red curb while I quickly went into the shop. Luckily, he was able to move to an open spot that was closer. read more

I seriously can not say enough amazing things about Franceska. My daughter has celiac and we ended up being in Waikiki over her 10th birthday so being able to get a gluten free cake that's totally safe for her to enjoy meant the absolute world to our family. Ordered our wedding cake from here and it turned out amazing!! Not only did it look amazing, it tasted great! My wife has a number of dietary restrictions, and we weren't sure if we'd be able to find a cake she could have on our wedding day. Franceska was super friendly during the ordering process, and answering all our questions about the ingredients/our dietary restrictions! Since my girlfriend is gluten-free and she's had to tag along with me to all the local food spots that she can't mostly eat at, I wanted to find something gluten-free for her in Honolulu. Luckily, I discovered Pu'uwai Aloha Bakery, which is ALL gluten-free! This wasn't really a visit for me, so I can't really provide that much of a review aside from the one cookie I had. It was quite delicious though, if you had told me it was gluten-free beforehand I wouldn't have guessed. All I know is that my girlfriend ordered $30+ worth of food and enjoyed all of it, so that's the only seal of approval I need! read more

A perfect Saturday morning starts with a stroll thru the Ward Farmer's market. My work schedule doesn't always allow it so I commit to once a month. There is 1 booth that I never skip and it is the Pu'uwai Aloha Bakery. If you're like me my group of friends range from gluten-free, sugar-free, vegan, vegetarian, low-carb, full-fat. Well they have a pastry for everyone. The loaf pans are moist and flavors stand out. Cookies have a crunch on the outside with a soft - middle I like the peanut butter chocolate chip. You can't tell by taste or texture which ones are regular- vegan etc. All so good. Ultimate favorite "The Vegan Ganache Cake" Ultimately best chocolate cake I have had vegan or not. They are so amazing and accommodating! Although closed on Sunday- they made my daughters cake fresh on Sunday for a special pick up. Stopped in for breakfast and went with both savory and sweet. The meatball roll was amazing (and also dairy free). Grabbed the cinnamon roll for later so they packed the cream cheese icing to go. Everything gluten free and so delicious. The staff was so sweet and accommodating. read more
