Located in the corner of The Lanai food court, this Brug location bakes bread daily and if you're lucky to catch them when they do, it smells like an absolute delight. My personal favorites have been the multiple varieties of anpan (bun filled with sweet red bean paste) that take me back to my childhood as well as the mochi breads. Also if you're a sandwich person, you definitely need to get a loaf of bread while you're there. These bread loaves are to die for. Even if you eat them by themselves, they are so fluffy and light that it takes you straight to heaven. The staff is usually pretty friendly and willing to answer questions about the many varieties of pastries that they offer there. I often ask people what their favorites are just so I can expand my horizons. Pricing is reasonable and everything is Ala carte so you know you should most certainly get some for your friends and family back home when you visit. read more

Hmm... was there a complete change in staff for the weekend crew? We sure miss the former crew - they were SO friendly and helpful. Not the new crew. Very little interaction, no eye contact - and if we ask if they have a specific pastry coming out - they look like we've bothered them; especially the middle-aged lady with a ponytail that has just started working on the weekend. She looked so annoyed at our inquiries. There's only about 1/4 to 1/2 of the shelves ready with pastries at opening. Is this normal? Say goodbye to a nice friendly BRUG. Small bakery found in the Ala Moana food court. They have another separate store front at the Ala Moana as well. They have lunch bag merch with cute little bread art. They close at 6pm, so when I came around 5pm, everything was pretty much sold out. Luckily, that led me find this coffee pudding from the refrigerator section. coffee pudding: 9.7/10. There are multiple locations of Brug in Haiwaii. The Ala Moana center has two: one near all the food, one next to the cat cafe. Their bread is extremely delicious. Reminds me of Japanese and Asian bread - less sweet, softer and puffier. Watch out, they do sell out easily. By the time it is afternoon, choices can be limited. They also have a sale section for one day old bread cute. Still tastes amazing. And it also means everything else is quite fresh. I'm obsessed with Brug and wish there were more of these stores on the mainland. The animal shaped breads are the cutest! I also loved the delicious fruit danishes and an pan! So good and 100% will be back next time I am fortunate enough to visit paradise! Visit early in the morning as they sell out fast. We have been going to Brug Ala Moana since they opened many years ago. Being located in the Lanai Food Court, it is noisy but makes it convenient for our ohana to choose what they want to eat. My hubby and daughter loves the Bacon Epi to snack on because they can break it off in small pieces and ... who doesn't like bacon?! What I really enjoy is seeing their seasonal special pastries. During this visit, they were already featuring cute Halloween creations! It is self-serve so can take time to choose what you want then take your tray to the cashier where they package your selections. I love Brug! This location is on the street level, Mauka side, same area as Marshall's. I think this location is really small, and has its fair share of crazies popping in and out (due to location), but I will always stop by to pick something up here. I recently participated in the Brug Bakery anniversary special. All pastry, rolls and single croissant were $2. It was well organized and gave me the perfect opportunity to try things I wouldn't normally buy. It was really difficult for them to move the line quickly because it's an incredibly small space and such a huge turnout. It was a hour wait and when I finally got in none of my favorites were available. However they did have about 10 choices available, they were rotating inventory so not everyone had the same options throughout the day. It was nice to try and takes place every July. This particular store is at the Ala Moana Center - I can see why this place is pretty popular and why their selections run out quickly! The bread...many bake styles available, always good, soft and tasty and always fresh. I also love the chocolate croissant and the anpan. Quality is always on point. But, today, I tried the baby seal bun with lilikoi cream filling. So good, the cream is not too sweet and goes well with the soft bun. The service was fast, thankfully,since the shop is small and so crowded. A bit hard to move around. You need to walk slowly and gaze at the wonderful pastries. Soooo worth it, tho. read more

This review is specifically for customer service. We visited the recently and were very disappointed with the customer service provided. My partner and I were waiting to pay for four items, and there were four employees standing around one register while another employee was ringing someone up at the other register. One employee made eye contact with me, then glanced at her coworker as if she didn't want to help us. The other employee finally greeted us and began ringing us up. I wouldn't have minded purchasing a bag, but it wasn't even offered -- despite the fact that we were clearly juggling several items in our hands. Instead, I had to awkwardly untie a bag from another restaurant to store our purchases while the employees just stood by watching. There was no "thank you" or "have a good day" at the end of the transaction, only a lack of initiative and interest in providing basic customer service. We enjoy the items from Brug but unfortunately, this experience left us feeling unwelcome and unappreciated as customers. read more

I didn't have much breakfast and hadn't had lunch. Surfers Bakery was closed. I was so happy to see BRUG Bakery. I have been to other locations, so I knew about the good quality. This particular location is cozy, and quantity was limited since it was later in the day. They already were sold out of the cute Piggy Buns (with cha siu), which are one of the specials for the month. I got a Pastrami Cheese Focaccia, a Pesto Focaccia, and a Kitaguni Focaccia. I was pleasant surprised by the Brug Ala Moana as their bread is unique and tasty. Truffle bun was soft and firm. Shrimp and broccoli bread was out to the world innovative but we know that's something Japanese bakers do. Loved it! And the sea lion with Lilikoi ? I bought it because it was so cute! I am Japanese, so I am long famiiar with milk bread, azuki beans, mochi, Japanese-style croquettes, etc. All of these food items, familiar to the local palate, are well incorporated into their pastry offerings. While I haven't been to The Lanai Brug Bakery location often of late; I have visited their Mauka Street Level store, as well as their Manoa Marketplace locale. This morning, picked up Kale & Spinach, Cranberry & Cream Cheese half loaf, and apple pie. Only the apple pie was a bit disappointing...just average. The store is not kid friendly, it is so cramped you cannot fit a stroller or wheelchair, etc. Employees shove and force you out of the way to stock breads. My stroller was shoved, over, and spilled on by the employees who are in such a rush to get you in and out of the store. The staff are so unfriendly to any disturbance from kids. Kids are paying customers and they look at them with disgust, as if they are 2nd class citizens. BRUG has definitely mastered the art of consistency. I've been to almost all their locations in Hawaii and it seems like the only thing that disappoints me is when they run out. The cashiers never fail to remind me to get my points in, which is important for someone who goes to BRUG as often as I do! On weekends my work peeps cooks up some toast for us lately and brings her own loaf of bread and shares them with us and thought that well let's fancy it up a bit with a loaf from Brug, This OG location is easily forgotten as I do myself often go to the Lanai Food Court location but since I was on the Street Level in Ala Moana Center why not show some love at this first location that got us all falling in love with their baked goods. I always go to brug for matcha but decided to try the one at ala Moana. I asked for an iced matcha with soy milk and the whole thing was just soy milk. It was very light color and the lady handed it to me with the cup overflowing. I went back to the lady at the reg (who made my drink) if she could remake it and a guy on the side just said we would have to charge you extra. It wasn't that busy at all, they both looked at each other and just gave a look. My boyfriend just said okay and it was like $1-2? The raspberry danish was nice, the raspberry jam did taste fresh, however I think the marshmallows are an odd touch since it didn't add much to the flavor or texture. The veggie bread was a staple, tasted like roasted veggies on bread but a solid meat alternative nonetheless.
