Back again for a custom dessert order but this time for a memorial service instead of a baby shower. My family member in charge of ordering the cake called multiple bakeries before asking me for a recommendation and of course--mine was Cake Works! She wanted a very specific cake that was reminiscent of our grandmother's favorite cake of all time-pineapple upside down cake. The challenge was that she wanted the pineapple to be crushed so as to make serving easier. Cake Works was the only bakery that was willing to do this for us and how special it was. A Pup-tastic Day Made Even Sweeter! After a heart-melting visit to the Hawaiian Humane Society in Honolulu (seriously, we wanted to take all the pups home), we spotted the cutest little cake shop across the street--Cake Works--and decided to treat ourselves. Best. Decision. Ever. From the moment we walked in, the sweet smell of freshly baked goodies had us wagging our tails (well, almost). The cupcakes were perfectly frosted, the macarons were melt-in-your-mouth magic, and everything looked like it came straight out of a dessert dream. We picked up a few cupcakes that were almost too cute to eat--almost--and sat outside to enjoy our little cake break. It was the cherry on top of a paw-sitively perfect day. I've been to Cake Works several times to buy Mink macaroons over the years. We have also ordered birthday cakes here for friends but I haven't tried anything from Cake Works till recently. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm not a huge dessert fan which is why I haven't tried anything from here. The only reason I tried a slice of their cake was because Mink went out of her way to throw me a surprise birthday party and ordered me a sloth cake from here. The funniest part of this rather pricey cake is that literally 5 minutes before I arrived at the surprise party, a friend's son decided to play with it when his parents looked away for a minute. His parents freaked out and tried to repair the damage the best they could. He's only a little over 1 year old and kids will be kids. Mink and I couldn't stop laughing when we heard what happened. It was super cute and his little contribution to the party lol. After all the effort from everyone, I ate a slice of the cake. Since I'm not a cake expert, I couldn't tell you if it was good or not but it was special and I enjoyed it. Now I have a story about the cake and a new hilarious memory. Cake Works is a fantastic bakery with quality products and great service! We wanted a small cake for a gender reveal and had about two weeks notice. Christine was fantastic and totally willing to work with us on pick up date and style. The cake turned out exactly as I imagined it, and the whole thing was delicious! Prices were on par with other bakeries we queried. The small cake easily served six people (multiple servings in some cases!) and we had about half the cake left over. The website and online client portal are easy to navigate and you can just use email if that works better for you too. The physical store is located in that awkward King Street H1 off ramp area. It was also really easy to arrange for a sample tasting and add things to our order after the initial invoice, such as the birthday cupcake and candle we got to surprise one of our bridesmaids during the reception. I believe the price I paid for the cake was far too high for what I received. I spent nearly $300 for a 6-inch round cake with basic piping, and the specific design request I made , which had been confirmed in advance , was not fulfilled upon pickup. Instead, they scrambled to find an alternative flower to replace the one I originally requested, yet I was still charged the full amount with no refund or partial credit offered. Afterward, the person I spoke with admitted she had misunderstood my request over the phone and acknowledged the mistake. Despite this, no resolution was provided. The macarons were all nicely crispy on the outside and tender inside, with flavorful fillings. I also tried the decorated gingerbread cookie and hot cocoa cupcake. The cookie was almost too pretty to eat, and had a nice lingering ginger warmth. The hot cocoa cupcake had a moist, dense crumb that really tasted like cocoa, topped with a toasted marshmallow cream. Amazing little bakery with an assortment of delectables. I came to buy some cupcakes for a birthday and they had a great varsity. I ended up picking up some haupia, strawberry guava, and red velvet. I would highly recommend the strawberry guava. I was helped by one of the employees whom was really helpful. Wow all my regular places I go yearly I have not reviewed???? Oh oh my....I've been coming to this place for several years off and on, but in recent have discovered their hot chocolate cake for christmas and its been our dessert table stable for 2 years, not to mention I love their ginger bread cookies. Order online or you can walk in, ample parking just a little funky to get to. They always have a person at the counter to service you if not somone comes up quick quickly. If not, you can browse their shelves of baked goods. We've tried their Hot chocolate cake, cupcakes, macaroons and bagged cookies, our favorite is their cake. Unfortunately, this past christmas the cake was not as moist as previous years, not sure what happened, but still was good, just not as moist as past. Their other products are good and their decorations on their cakes and other baked goods are so so pretty. This location is the former Ted's (thats giving my age) renovated to a bakery, so you can actually walk in and check out the goods, versus the original Teds it was only take out windows (which are still there too). Usually for my grandfathers birthday I always bake him a cake. However, since this year he turned 80, I wanted to get him a really nice cake. His request this year was for German Chocolate. Since I had the $62 gift certificate from the last cake being a complete fail, I gave it to my sister and she ordered these 10 cupcakes in a cake for our other sisters birthday. They were given some creative freedom but were asked to put specific flowers. Creative freedom is one thing, but this is just ugly. A friend from high school used to work here and said their custom cake person left and she was really good. Was also informed that they don't have expiration dates on their stocks and will use fillings and such much longer than they should until they mold or smell bad. My questions are, why do they still offer custom cakes, at high prices, when they obviously cannot deliver what the customers want, and produce extremely poor results? And, how do they have the audacity to send out cakes that look like they were made blindfolded and with no training in the kitchen at all? Seriously, if you're thinking about ordering from this place, don't. Order from anyone else or just make a homemade one, it will turn out 10x better than what they would give you. Was very excited for a custom cake from Cake Works and unfortunately left shocked that they would decorate a cake like this and then proceed to give it to a customer. Ordered a cupcake cake from my sister's birthday, with 3 Hawaiian flowers. After leaving the store, I sat in the car for a few minutes still so shocked and confused at this cake. It was not visually pleasing at all and $100. I brought it home and showed my 4 yo niece who said "I don't like it." What toddler doesnt like cake??When I brought it would for cake time, everyone made comments about how it definitely was not worth $100, and asked why the cake looked the way it did. They also posed very nicely on the coffee table for our guests. The not a "cupcake guy", but everyone thought they were great! I was pleasantly surprised to find the lilikoi cupcake filled with a lilikoi jelly in the middle, so there's that. A note about their location: it's actually VERY EASY to get to, just spend a minute looking at the map. Not a conventional location for sure, so don't expect simple intuition to get you there. Coming from Ewa direction on King St, a dedicated U-turn makes it almost idiot-proof. The chocolate cupcakes had an unpleasant dense texture. Could have used a bit more sugar as well. Frosting was delicious however. Rate a 6. The 10" cake cost $100 but the cake was very tall. Unfortunately the cake suffered from the same problem as the cupcakes which had an overly dense texture. Rate a 6. Maybe it's only their chocolate batter that I don't care for since they many other types of cakes.
