Kristen is a wonderful baker and I have tried her baked goodies for many years and it was so nice to see the array of desserts at this Valentines pop up downtown. The colorful cakes, cookies, layered puddings and candies are just so pretty and tasty. It's hard to not buy it all! I bought the cake pop, do it yourself cookies with edible icing, lilikoi layered pudding cake, Oreo layered pudding cake and mini cheesecake. The desserts are light but rich with flavor. You just can't stop at one bite. Service is friendly and helpful! Ambiance is bright and delightfully pretty! Dessert makes everything better!
Ordered online! Easy pickup! Excellent customer service and communication! It was a gift to my son who does not like cake. We opened the treat pack and moved 2 brownies next to each other to get the birthday candle in the brownies. We sang happy birthday and he blew out the candle. Better than cake and everyone got a treat!
I was lucky because the bakery already had the design I wanted for my daughter's cake. The process to place my order was easy and they got back to me right away for payment. The cake flavor was strawberries and cream, and it was absolutely delicious! Not only was my daughter happy about the design, she enjoyed the flavor of her cake. I'll definitely go back when I need a delicious and beautiful cake.

Thank you for letting me pick up the birthday cake straight after working a night shift. Thankful you are located so close to Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women and Children. I ordered the pre-designed fresh floral cake. The cake was well packaged and made it all the way to the North Shore in one piece. The birthday girl was ecstatic when she saw the cake. I had to go to work before celebrations started. I was told the yellow butter cake with layers of light whipped vanilla cream filling was delicious. It was the perfect size for a small gathering.
Quality cakes and great service! We ordered a simple wedding cake for our small family celebration. I placed the order a week ahead and Kristin was very helpful over the phone making sure I knew how to order and specify what I wanted when ordering via her website. We were very happy with the cake. It was vanilla on vanilla. Simple but you can taste the quality. Would definitely order from A Cake Life again!
We absolutely loved working with A Cake Life for our wedding! Kristin and her team were amazing and so easy to work with from start to finish. We chose their LITE Package, and it was the perfect option for our intimate wedding. It gave our guests variety while still allowing us to have a beautiful cutting cake. Everything was absolutely delicious! Our guests couldn't stop talking about the desserts, and we loved that there was something for everyone. The cake shooters, panna cotta, and cupcakes were all a huge hit. Our mango cutting cake deserves a special mention because it was incredible! It was so fresh, and flavorful that I'm still dreaming about it today. Not only was it beautiful, but it tasted just as amazing as it looked. The ordering process was seamless, communication was great, and everything arrived exactly as planned. Thank you, Kristin and team, for making our wedding desserts so memorable!
I was very disappointed with the cake that I had made for my daughters 16th birthday. I sent the color request of the piping as shown in the picture color swatch. Not even close. Why was the piping so dark!?. It was so much food coloring that it was starting to bleed out of the frosting. My daughter was excited to see her cake but was sad the color was not on point like she wanted to match her theme. Let alone the cake was also dry and the frosting gritty. I read the reviews of this place which were majority positive so I was quite disapointed and shocked upon receiving my cake and I thought if I was ordering a wedding cake and the colors were so off like this id be pissed! I did spend xtra for this cake for 16th birthday then I normally would so to have it be all bad was quite irritating bc literally the sams clubs cakes I've bought tasted better than this, i didnt have time to complain amd have her redo the color correcting and we made do with what we had but, just a fair warning to others of my experience and I will not order again or refer anyone here unfortunately. My husband and I ordered our gender reveal cake from A Cake Life back in April after previously ordering both our wedding cake and first anniversary cake from them. We had a friend send over the gender information, and the entire process was so smooth. We couldn't be happier with how the cake turned out and are already looking forward to ordering many more cakes from them in the future!
Absolutely loved my wedding cake. I ordered the 2 tier, with coconut flavor for one tier and guava on the other. I asked for the Textured Buttercream with Antherium. The cake florals were perfect and cohesive with my tropical florals. Price was reasonable. My cake was delicious. Forever grateful for a this memory. Order process was easy and smooth. I opted for delivery to our reception venue for stress free morning.
Got a custom cake here for a friends birthday. It was easy pickup, a tasty cake, and aesthetic! Taste itself was pretty solid, with nice a cream to it.
I had A Cake Life do a dessert bar for my wedding. I worried we would have leftovers but almost every single dessert was gone by the end of the night. Everything was delicious (but the strawberry and cream/coconut cake was my absolute favorite)!
I ordered a test box with 6 different flavors and I loveeeeeed the yellow butter with strawberry and also 2nd yellow butter with vanilla. So I did not hesitate to order a full cake of yellow butter with strawberry. Well, they covered that cake in the thickest heavy stuff I wouldn't even call frosting. It was so gross that everyone was wondering why I even got that cake... and it cost almost $100!! Such a waste of money and time. The cake sure was pretty though.

I contacted A Cake Life approximately one month before the date of my good friend's wedding to order a custom wedding cake as a surprise. This company was very accommodating and very detailed in their response. I really appreciated that their initial email back anticipated all of my questions and provided links with photo examples of the different cakes provided. We ultimately choose a pre-designed cake but requested white dendrobiums as a flower accent and they were able to adjust the flowers as we requested. Cake itself was absolutely beautiful, just as pictured. The filling was light and true to the strawberry flavor. Remind me a little of the Asian fruitcakes that my friend and I grew up with and love. Our whole party was very satisfied with this cake. We did get the 8-in size and had leftovers for our 16-person group. If I ever needed a custom cake in the future in the Honolulu area, I would definitely reach out to A Cake Life! read more

Wanted a cake for my hub's Yakudoshi. I'm not a dessert person so am probably a pain since I don't understand cake/dessert talk. Kristin and Gina, and everyone else I may have had to deal with, were very patient with me and accommodating. Due to covid, didn't want a cake that was exposed to everyone else, and since we split the families into 2 different parties, couldn't have a half cut cake for the 2nd party. They made me a deer head topper, and then my last minute decision was to add on cake cups. Everyone was really impressed with the topper and loved the cake cups. I had some of chocolate cake one and it wasn't overly sweet, and was soft and I ate much more than anticipated. We have yet to bust into the deer head. Location was really convenient in that little food strip mall like place that has Kozo, Golden Eagle, Sweet Home (I think they are still there) and L&L. At normal times the parking lot gets crowded, but on a Saturday morning, it was very easy to get in and out. Excellent customer service, location, and product...I've found my new go to place for fancy cakes! read more

A Cake Life provided our desert bar and wedding cake and we had all positive reviews from our guests! :) the deserts were delicious and presented just as we had discussed. Getting the customized desert bar was easy and stress-free (which was very helpful for the busy bride!). A Cake Life provided timely responses and a professional experience. Only thing keeping me from giving a 5-star review is that we dropped off a check to pay the down payment to them, but they initially forgot to cash it. Had to go down with a new one since the original had expired. But the staff was apologetic about it and we understand that it is a very busy time for wedding vendors. Other than this, our experience here was seamless and I would still recommend them to everyone! read more

A Cake Life is the best custom cake maker in Hawaii! Working with Kristen and her team to design and order my wedding cake was simple and easy. The actual cake came out even better than I expected, and not only was the cake beautiful, it tasted amazing! The top layer was lemon, which is a wonderful balance of sweet and tart. Purchased a cute food cookie kit for $30. The kit included 12 cookies sealed to keep fresh until ready to use. 4 icing bags. 3 bags of sprinkles. Kristin Kato, the owner had a virtual cookie decorating session via Zoom, and thanks to Emi for coordinating this event. Kristin and her assistant was so patient and didn't move on until everyone joining in was comfortable. They repeated the process numerously even though the event was going beyond the hour. Truly appreciate it! They made it look so easy! Thank goodness for the sprinkles I was able to hide my flaws. Looking forward to another event. I recently picked up a cookie decorating kit for a yelp event. The process was so easy. I emailed Kristin told her I needed to pick up a cookie kit, she sent me an invoice via Venmo and told me the pick up time. I showed up at the specified pick up time and everything was ready. Simple, easy transaction. The cookie decorating kit came with 12 fresh baked sugar cookies. The shapes were cupcakes, popsicles, and donuts. Royal icing frosting, and sprinkles. It was $30, a great price for the kit. The cookies tasted delicious! The frosting was very colorful and the sprinkles were just plain fun! I recently celebrated my 5 year wedding anniversary. I saw that Kristin was selling cakes for pre-order. Since A Cake Life was actually my wedding vendor I knew their special cakes would be just as delicious! I ordered a special cake with vanilla sponge and strawberry filling. This is one of their most popular cake flavors. The cake was topped with fresh roses, strawberries, and blueberries and the top was dipped in delicious chocolate. The cake was too pretty to eat! I didn't want to cut into it. It was absolutely delicious! Since we weren't able to go out to eat for our anniversary due to the pandemic this made it the perfect way to end our special day. Thanks a Kristin and team! Kristin and her crew are great! Very prompt with their responses and they let you know when they're busy (if they can't respond quickly). I found A Cake Life from a friend that lives in Honolulu and ordered a cake from them. We quickly connected and let Kristin know what I wanted. She made it easy to order and asked for a picture of my bouquet to match it. Loved how it turned out. The cakes are affordable and it was yummy! This cake fed 35+ people including the serving staff at side street. We decided to pay the extra $50 for the delivery and it was worth it. This place does amazing work. They were so organized. I asked for what I wanted and they were able to accommodate everything and create such a beautiful piece. They were able to work with the display stand that I created, incorporate the cake toppers I made and created a design on top to work with it, and put on the cupcake wrappers I had gotten previously for free. I reslly didn't have to worry about anything. When my husband and I came up from picture taking, it was already all set up. All my guests said that it was delicious. And even though my husband and I didn't get too have too much of the cake on our wedding day, the slice that we cut was delicious. Our cake table got a lot of attention at our wedding, and I honestly don't think it would have been nearly as impressive with any other company. read more

The first time we ordered a cake was for our wedding. However we could not afford how expensive it was so we bought a common design BUT still beautiful 2 layer round cake. It was amazing! Very tasty even though it was still pretty expensive. However, my grandmother decided to help herself to it and ate all of it before my husband could get a chance. So, when my husband was promoted recently I bought him his own. EVERYTHING the same! Same flavor and same frosting, just no decoration to save money. Sadly, it was very dry. Not at all what I remembered for our first cake at our wedding the year prior. I am so thankful that they made our wonderful cake for our wedding and it was very moist. This one was not even close to that. Very sad. I highly recommend you open your doors for customers to come in too. It is a little scary to me going into any place that serves food where you are not able to see their sanitation practices. Photos is a copy of what our wedding cake looked like. If you're looking for a beautiful AND delicious cake, go see Kristin at A Cake Life! You can follow them on Instagram to see many of their cakes and desserts. Based upon all the photos and "wedding buzz" choosing A Cake Life was a pretty quick & easy decision. They were able to schedule me for a tasting and consultation. A week later I already put my deposit down. They have a lot of experience and skills in cake creation and decorating. They can do elaborate designs with lots of details, or, they can keep it simple and clean. If you want floral decor on your cake, they can pick up from Watanabe floral, too if you arrange for it. They have six flavors in the sampling (their most popular flavors). The cake is sampled into a "cake bento" which was a cute and smart idea. My top two favorites were the strawberry shortcake and the guava/guava. For my wedding cake, I ordered the strawberry shortcake for both tiers. It had a lot of frosting but it was so yummy! A CAKE LIFE MADE MY DREAM WEDDING CAKE AND I AM FOREVERRR GRATEFUL! The team absolutely nailed it. I got exactly what I wanted. I simply said I wanted two tier cake with florals and donuts. They delivered!! Not only that...the cake was so incredibly delicious! My wedding guests ate everything, no crumb left behind! Guests kept asking where it was from and said they never had a wedding cake so good. The top tier was coconut and pineapple, bottom was strawberries'n cream. I highly recommend those flavors! This is the 3rd time I've ordered a custom cake from A Cake Life. Kristin is so talented and she took my idea from three pictures and all communication was done via email... and the cake turned out EXACTLY how I wanted it. Details to the decorations were amazing! From the little poppy flowers to the butterflies, and the garden bunny cake topper! I bought a cake for my son's surprise 25th birthday because is friends were flying in for the party. I did so after trying their sampler pack because it was important that the cake taste as well as look good. Unfortunately, the cake was nothing like the sampler. The cake itself was beautifully presented but it simply tasted awful -- very dry, tasteless except for the heavy cream icing. We all know that batches can differ and this cake felt like it was not fresh, it was pre-baked and then someone pulled it out of the refrigerator two weeks later. I promptly emailed Kristen and asked if we could return the uneaten cake for a refund. She agreed and asked that we also bring back the flower toppings, which we did. Unfortunately, after that, she changed her mind. She emailed back saying that she tried our uneaten cake and that it was fine even though it was not. I've actually never had a business conduct itself this way -- take the cake and the flowers back and then not refund the customer? Who does that? Why not just take responsibility for a bad cake? So word to the wise - if you order, be forewarned that you're going to spend $140 min on a cake, it may not taste good, and she's not going to refund you. Which means she has no obligations to you to deliver what you purchased. Even if you tried the sampler first! read more
Consultation- 5/5/2019: Love it. Love her (Kristin). Never been more excited about a cake in my entire life. At the consultation, we were given a bento sample of 6 amazing flavors. Loved EVERY SINGLE ONE! So excited, that the plan was originally to order a small cake for our wedding, but after the experience, we ordered a round 3 tier wedding cake! 3 different flavors- red velvet, lilikoi, and guava! The entire process from beginning to end was so easy. Kristin responded quickly to my email and we were able to set up a pick-up date for her sample box! It was so hard to choose which flavor we wanted (they were all SO YUMMY) but you can pick different flavors for each tier which I was happy to hear! In the end, we decided to go with guava and lilikoi. We opted for a pretty simple design and just had our florist add on the cascade of flowers and our cake topper. Now where do I go to get a colorful tiered Mickey Mouse decorated cake for a 3rd birthday party that I'm hosting for my granddaughter, Kayla? After looking around town to see what's available, I wasn't satisfied in what I had wanted. My party planner, Tessa Gomes of Fred and Kate Events, came to the rescue: A Cake Life. A Cake Life opened in July 2009 by Kristin Kato, who is its owner, lead cake designer, and artist. She and her staff (Elana Geyrozaga, Communications Manager; Gina Yanigihara, Administrative Assistant; Heather Ogoshi, Lead Sugar Artist; Amber Ramirez, Lead Baker; Jessica Nelson, Lead Cake Decorator, and Liliana Hernandez, Cake Decorator) specialize in creating beautiful, elaborate, and delicious customized cakes for any occasions, such as weddings, birthdays, bridal/baby showers, corporate events, and special events. Their philosophy is "there's no life like a cake life." All cakes are custom-made; hence, they are not like a regular retail bakery with generic cakes on display to be sold. The cost is dependent on the complexity of the cake design, with 40% of the cake cost to be pre-paid and is non-refundable. As A Cake Life is in heavy demand for weddings, they are limited in the number of cakes they can provide each day, depending on their schedule of wedding cake orders. Cake orders should be placed at least 3 to 4 months in advance for weddings and 1 month for other events; however, orders for popular wedding dates should be booked at least a year in advance. They can deliver for a fee. As my Kayla's birthday party was on 8/18/18, I hadn't realized that it was a popular good-luck date for weddings. So when I tried to order a Mickey Mouse cake in Feb. 2018 to be delivered to the party site on 8/18/18, they could not take my order, as they were at a maximum with their orders. However, Kristin provided an option that they could make the cake the morning before, and that I would have to pick it up the day prior to the party date, refrigerate it on my own, and transport it on my own to the party site. A little inconvenient, but at least there was an option for me to have a Mickey Mouse cake. During the next few months, staff was especially patient with my numerous changes until I knew what I wanted in the end. Upon picking up the Mickey Mouse cake, I was amazed at the detailed decorations on the 2-tiered cake covered with a fluorescent pink fondant frosting with a handmade colorful rainbow atop the cake! They matched the colors from the invitation! I chose yellow butter cake with fresh strawberry cream filling (or strawberry shortcake, which is the most popular) for one tier, and devil's food chocolate cake with Oreo cookies 'n' cream filling (3rd most popular) for the other tier. I didn't serve this cake as it was a display cake only and instead, had a sheet cake for serving (easier to cut); the sheet cake was ordered elsewhere as A Cake Life was unable to take any more orders. We shared the Mickey Mouse cake with family, and all said that it was delicious and artfully/skillfully decorated. The cakes were moist, light, tasty, and not overly sweet. If you're not sure how you want the cake decorated, you can request an optional 30 min. to 45 min. cake consultation appointment with Kristin for a $30 fee. Appointment times are Tues to Fri, 10a-6p and Sat/Sun, 10a-3p. Or you can pick up a cake sampler of 6 flavors in a to-go bento box to taste on your own for $20 (24-hour advance notice required). In addition to the above, their popular cake flavors include: butter cake with lilikoi cream filling, guava cake with guava cream filling, coconut cake with pineapple filling, and red velvet cake with cream cheese filling. I look forward to ordering a smaller sheet cake from them in the future for a special occasion. They sometimes have flash sales of decorated single round cakes if you follow their Facebook page. We LOVE A Cake Life!!! They are always quick to respond and very patient with our requests. Planning a wedding can be very stressful but working with Kristin, the owner for A Cake Life, to create our wedding cake was such a smooth and seamless process. She is very detailed and the sky is the limit. Our wedding cake was exactly what we had imagined! From the flowers to the topper to the position of the decor to the flavors of the cake. It's was perfect!!! The cake testing was so fun too! Not overpowering and she was so accommodating. On our one year anniversary, we ordered a replica of our top tier of our wedding cake and she remembered exactly what we had ordered as well as the type of roses we had. I always knew that I wanted to order my wedding cake from here after I kept seeing people post about their wedding cakes on Instagram. After researching inspiration for my wedding cake, I realized that A CAKE LIFE was the only one that could bring it to life, and I was ECSTATIC when I finally secured my order. Given the pandemic, they were able to provide my now husband and I samples of cake so we could decide on the flavor for our wedding cake. Kristin was so punctual and great at getting back to us via email, especially during this crazy time. They worked with our budget AND our allergy and dietary needs. Oh and they have the cutest cake toppers! The cake tasted amazing and the cupcakes that we ordered for my dairy free guests where so beautiful. I can guarantee you that I will be ordering from them again and again in the future. SIDE NOTE: They do have a ton of Instagram cake specials that they post also. Be sure to follow them! (Shortly after the wedding I saw an adorable cake that I just had to get for my sister in law's GENDER REVEAL - it was also SUPER delicious). Also - those CAKE CUPS are delicious too. You have to try those! The location is a bit hidden depending which direction you are entering from. It was easy to find on the GPS though. They also do deliver for wedding cakes (we had ours delivered to our reception site) for an additional fee. If not, you can always pick up your treats at the location. I cannot even believe how amazing my cake came out! I have been trying to find a place to make this exact cake for the last 6 years and I am very thankful that I found A Cake Life. Kristin was very responsive and made my birthday the best ever! The cake was delicious and picture perfect! I called about a week and half prior to finding out the gender of my baby and called them to see if they were able to make a little gender reveal smash cake for my son to smash and us to eat of course lol, they did inform me that they were pretty booked, I spoke to Gina and she was awesome, super friendly and knowledgeable, they were able to squeeze me in! I ordered cake from this place because high rating reviews from yelp. Everything was fine. We been emailing back and forth. I ordered cake samples and chose red velvet flavor but for me it's too sweet, so I emailed her and she said she can make it less sweet and I got another sample, it was not perfect but less sweet. So I told her okay. Not what I like but I can live with that. She asked me what kind design I like, I told her I like the cake in her yelp picture. And I screen shot the pic and I told her I like exactly like the picture, she said no problem but it's peony on top and peony is not at season on April, so it will be extra $60. I said okay, I pay $60 as long as the cake look like in the pic but I want black trim and pink trim. The big day arrived and the cake delivered to my reception Chef Chai on time, but when I walked in, omg the cake looks different. The flower look frozen instead of nice and lively. Omg!! The original cake picture was from their own website and they can't even make the cake from their own website?? What's wrong with them? One time wonder??! I would be more understanding if I want them to make cake look like random picture. But this is from their own website. Oh c'mon!! I was so disappointed!!! Especially when I ate the cake, it taste super sweet!! I guess she forgot!! She forgot I order less sweet!! The cake is so sweet, giving you headache. I am not happy abt it!! Especially it's a wedding cake, something you want to show off to your guess and colleague. I notice she was really nice before I signed the contract and pay but after I paid she didn't touched base with me anymore so I assume she remember. Will I recommend this place to friend and family? The answer is of course NOT. I paid a lot for this cake and I was a good customer. I paid in full way before it's due date. But I get the cake that not even pretty on my wedding day and too sweet. You only have one shot, no second chances. And they failed! They failed and I failed to give my family and friend a nice and delicious wedding cake. VERY UPSETTING!! I emailed them to asked what happened with my cake? How come it was so sweet and looked different. Their answer was just sorry. Hey sorry doesn't fix it. You ruined my day with junk cake! You could email me the day before and touch base if you think the flower was not fresh flower like the picture. You should talk to me and gave me option!! I opened for other last minute options, maybe like roses?? Or other fresh pink flowers?? I posted her email to show that she knew but she didn't give me any update abt it. I've always loved A Cake Life and ordered cakes for special events from them in the past. I didn't know they also offered cookies until I recently signed up for a Virtual Yelp Event, Cookie Decorating with A Cake Life. It was a great example of businesses innovating to adapt to social distancing while still providing a way for people to get together through special experiences. I purchased a the cute food cookie kit for $30; it included 12 cookies, 4 colors of frosting and a generous amount of sprinkles. It was easy to order the kit and I paid through Venmo. I picked up the kit the next day from their location in McCully on King Street across the Old Stadium Park, behind L&L. I called the business when I got there and they brought it out to me. The class was so much fun and exactly what I needed after being home for so long with the stay at home orders! Kristen explained everything very well, so even an inexperienced and non-artistic person like me felt comfortable. Kneading the frosting well, outlining with the frosting first, shaking the cookie to make the frosting smooth, allowing the frosting to dry for different layers, and making hearts, were all tips that I didn't know before this class! Emi and Kristen were both so patient and helped us all along. The cookie designs were so cute! The decorating was broken down in steps so it was not difficult, but it did take steady hands and some skill. It is easy yet challenging enough for both children and adults. My first cookie was a little messy, but I got better with each one! The kits change with upcoming holidays and I can't wait to do this again! Definitely recommend this for anyone! read more

We picked up our 6 inch Strawberries and Cream wedding cake the day before the event . The cake was so moist and delicious the next day . My husband ate almost half of the cake that day , it was delicious!! read more

We got our cake from A Cake Life for our wedding last year. We met with Kristin in June 2018 and had a cake tasting, and we decided on a 3-tier cake with different flavors of each. She drew us up a design, and we left happy with our choices. After some discussions, my husband and I decided to go with a smaller cake since we weren't sure that we would really need 3 tiers of cake. Kristin kindly downsized our cake and allowed us to use the extra money that we had paid for the bigger cake towards desserts that could be used for our bridal shower. Our family greatly enjoyed the cake cups and macarons. At the wedding itself, they delivered our cake, and we loved it. They are truly professional and gave us a simple cake that we were happy with. The cake was yummy as well. We really liked the strawberry cream cake. We have also been visiting their sales of treats at the store. They have an array of very yummy treats. I ordered a special cake for my daughters 16th birthday. While it LOOKED impressive, the flavor and enjoyment of the cake was lacking. The cookies and cream filling didn't even make it to the edges, the entire cake including the drip that was requested was actually fondant. The cakes itself was dry and we didn't eat more than one slice. Very disappointed. For the amount paid, we were expecting a much different experience. read more
