We asked about pricing thinking ok, max this should be ~$200. He said something vague about $160 on the phone but said he would know more once he arrived. We offered to pay over the phone and we were under the impression we would be in touch once he arrived. Per my friend, he came by. Drilled out the lock and replaced it. So again, I'm thinking ballpark $200 max. He insists my friend pays him in person and she fronts the costs. I ask her for the receipt and here's the breakdown: ---------------------- Service fee $150 House lockout for broken bolt $160 New bolt $175 Labor $45 Keys included Subtotal : $530.00 Material tax: 15.75 Grand total: $545.75 ---------------------- Uhm....excuse me? How can anyone charge 2 service fees plus a labor fee PLUS a insanely overpriced lock? I was just in shock. We asked him if the lock would automatically open for us when we were near it because obviously it must be some new space-age lock to be so pricey. We arrive at home the next day and its a reused lock that looks like nothing special and frankly looked used with a few scratches. I did extensive research on the internet to even find a similar lock from the brand and I'm convinced the brand just doesn't exist. After many convos with the locksmith on the phone about how he cheated us out of money and he had no right to conduct such an expensive service without consulting us first and he had nothing to say. The only thing he was able to offer was to refund us for the lock if we didn't like it. We went to Lowe's bought ourselves a new lock and installed it. The only place I will give him credit is he did show up the next day to pick up the lock and give us a check for $175. He said something about how he should charge us a restocking fee yada yada yada but obviously we weren't having it. Long story short: unless you are willing to pay an arm and a leg for "emergency" service go elsewhere. I called a few other places to get quotes and they were max in the $100 range. I can't believe this guy is so highly rated on yelp. I'm convinced they must be paid reviews because of how many similar experiences others have had. I highly suggest for those to also file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. A company like this should not be taking advantage of its customers, there is no need for it. Do not ever use this company. Dan attempted to charge me a $150 trip charge without telling me beforehand. He said that it was the weekend rate and that he charges everyone that much. I found Locksmith Tech on yelp yesterday afternoon and chose them because of their high ratings. I called in and made an appointment very easily without waiting or having to leave a message. The next morning (today) our locks were changed by Ehoud Amos. He was very knowledgeable and actually showed us how the previous locksmith incorrectly changed our locks! Now we understand why we would mysteriously get locked out of the house sometimes. Ehoud was fast, efficient, very friendly AND ON TIME! That was very important to me because I had to be at work an hour later. I know that we will be using this company in the future. I specifically will ask for Ehoud! One dreadful May night, my roommate was robbed at gunpoint. He was forced to give up his camera, some cash, and critically, his house keys, which meant that I needed my locks replaced ASAP. I called Locksmith Tech at 1am on a weekday, and impressively, Dan picked up immediately and coolly informed me that he could come over whenever I needed. I had to go to bed, so we scheduled for first thing in the morning. Dan arrived at the exact time we scheduled for, and he even patiently waited as I sent his license and insurance documents over to my landlord so she could approve the work. Once we got started it took him about two and a half hours to replace the five locks and deadbolts that were compromised due to the robbery. And when one of the locks required a part he didn't have in stock, he came back another day free of charge to install it and was communicative and accommodating to my schedule. I was locked out and desperate. I was told on the phone, I called from a neighbors house that the service call charge would be $65 plus labor. When I tried to inquire about other fees on the phone I was rudely shuffled off the phone. I was calling from a neighbors house so I could not easily call back to inquire about additional fees. BIG MISTAKE I assumed (note first three letters) it would be $100. - $150 maybe. It cost me $270. I would NEVER use these people again. Don't get taken advantage off by these guy(s). I called to get a rental unit's mailbox lock serviced because the key was sticking. He said these types of locks dont get serviced they get replaced. He told me the price of the lock is $80 and when I asked him if this is the normal cost of this type of lock - he said yes. Not knowing where to get the lock I just went with it. Here is what it cost to replace a mailbox lock. $40 trip fee - they are 5 minutes away from me and he even told me that amount of time when he had to go back to get the lock. $40 install fee for 1/2 an hour - he was having trouble installing the lock. He said in the beginning it will take 15 minutes. $85 for the hardware - Lowes sells this for $7 I found out and looks even better. After I called him to complain that the lock is still sticking and that the price of this lock seemed overprice for the quality plus he charged me $5 more - we got into a heated argument, and he blurted out that it was the price all the locksmiths in SF sells it for. I called Kamand Locksmith Services and they said the part is $12. $5 for an extra key - he said if I wanted more keys made it was only $2. Why did he charge me $5 then? The old lock ended up working it seemed that it was just loose and need to be adjusted. The new lock still feels sticky. I really feel stupid and taken advantage of. read more

I don't know why everyone says they're on time. I was locked out. Called. Got an estimate of 20-30 mins. The technician showed up 1 hour and 15 mins later. Also on the phone, I asked about the pricing and the guy was hard to understand, but I heard $45/hour. This was the lowest price I had gotten so far, so I went with them. When the tech finally shows up, he estimates $220 and tells me the $45 is the driving fee. This felt like a bait and switch, so I said I don't want your services and went with one of the other locksmiths I had called earlier. Paid these guys off with the driving fee. FYI, going rate is about 75-100 for first lock + 25 for additional locks. Ask about driving fees because nobody seems to include that in their phone quotes. Even if these guys had explained the rates correctly, I think they're still on the pricey side. read more

Beware! How does paying over $470 strike you to unlock your front door? We couldn't get a comprehensive quote from him, and instead of clearly explaining options, (uses faulty english to his advantage when convenient), replaced the lock and then charged us crazy prices. There were "drive fees", "unlocking fees", "replacement costs" that seemed way over retail. As another reviewer said, they're belligerent when questioned. Furthermore, they've been in trouble before, accused of overcharging. They do business as Locksmith Tech, Service Tech, and when we asked to see his license, he wouldn't let us hold and write the number down- he told us the number, and when we checked it out on the .gov site- no record. I couldn't get a quote on the phone (which was strange, as others did give me a quote), except for stating that it is $55 for the visit + labor + parts. Dan arrived quickly (10-15 minutes), stated that it is a secured lock that can't be easily opened (not sure this is true), and then my neighbor came over, and said she had a spare key from the landlord. could be a happy ending (with 0 efforts form Dan) - but he suggested to "settle" for $100 overall... DO NOT TRUST. Sent out a guy named Ilia who told me I had to replace 4 locks because they had "Smart Keys" and couldn't be re-keyed. Wanted to charge $520 but when I saw the junk he was going to replace my handset and deadbolts with I told him to forget it. Still ended up having to pay $80 to essentially have him go away. Found out the next day from another locksmith that the "Smart Key" thing was a scam. Called the shop and talked to David Stein - the supposed co-owner - who was very apologetic and promised to send a check for $80 that night. Week later and no check. Real hustlers...... read more

The lock core to my house's side door mysteriously fell out last week. I called Locksmith Tech and the call was immediately answered by a fellow named Idan. He was very helpful over the phone and showed up to the house within 45 min. There were a couple of parts missing but he was able to go into his toolbox and replace the parts, thus enabling us to keep the same keys! Service was great, and the job was done in 10 min. Dan is very professional, friendly and reasonable. I would certainly recommend him to others. I had Dan come out to provide some re-keying services recently. What was initially a smaller job turned into a larger project. We had called him out for three locks but decided to have him do more once he arrived. Customer service is obviously a major priority for him. Dan is very friendly and professional, and his work was high-quality. Full disclosure, we did have a minor dispute over fees. My feeling is that communication around how the changes would affect the cost of the service should have been clearer. I also believe that I should have asked more questions, but was preoccupied with moving into the property. That said, Dan was very reasonable and willing to working out the dispute. They arrived within 15 min (15 min faster than they quoted me, even) and popped the door open in ten min. The charge was reasonable (30% cheaper than the other place I called, which is why I went with them) if still expensive for 10 min if work.
