I ended up going with a 12-panel, 5.28 kW system and have been really happy with it so far. I financed through Puget Sound Cooperative Credit Union, and my monthly payment is actually lower than what the solar is offsetting on my electric bill, which was a big reason I decided to move forward. I'm also a PGE customer, so I qualified for a $3,500 Energy Trust of Oregon incentive that came right off the price. They also have a pretty solid referral program. It's $500 if someone you refer ends up going solar with them. Overall, it was a straightforward experience, no weird pressure, and I felt like I got a really good deal. Tuesday at 1:20pm, she hadn't arrived. So I called her cell phone. Voicemail. I left a message, reminding her of our appointment. At 1:30pm, I said "Screw it!" and went to Target. At 1:45pm, she called me at Target. It wasn't her fault, you see. Her scheduling software "malfunctioned" and double-booked her for the 1pm time slot. Sure. Anyway, she said she could be at my house in ten minutes. I told her, "Make it 20." To her credit, she arrived 90 minutes late on time this time. To her credit, she had the read-out and analysis of my house, the costs, and the projected energy savings on her laptop. Quite impressive. She answered all my questions. As we wrapped up, I said, "I need to discuss this with my wife. Can you send me a copy of that presentation?" "Sure, but...I am booked until 9pm tonight, so I won't be able to send them until tomorrow." Sure. That was six months ago. We never got the presentation, and we never heard from her again. Menos mal. The energy savings equalled (but did not exceed) the cost of the panels. There was no upside for taking the risk of a strange company drilling holes in our roof in the name of conservation. And there was certainly no possibility that we would hand-over a $20K check to this particular salesperson. I'd imagine is quite hard to lose a solar panel sale in the greater Portland area, but by golly...she earned that loss in spades.

However, when the project was completed, the 19th panel was placed near the back of the house, which is shaded by tall fir trees. We could have gotten better results, albeit the difference is not particularly great. If they had installed the panels as we had indicated, I would give them 5 stars. As it is, during the summer months, we are producing enough electricity to send it back into the grid for a small credit on our PGE bill.

RS installed 18 panels on my home in 2009 and they have worked flawlessly without any need for…read morerepair. RS was very easy to work with and the installation went quickly. The only maintenance needed so far is cleaning off the roof panels when I have my roof cleaned every few years. I have sprayed off the panels a few times with the hose during the dusty summer months. Since there is nothing mechanical, there are no breakdowns and the electronics have been trouble free after 7 years. I'm contacting RS to install more panels so I can reduce my electric bill even further. I'm glad it worked out. I wasn't sure of what to expect with such a new technology. I grew up in coal country and lost 20% of my lung capacity due to particulate. The only people who think coal is clean don't live near it. If I can save somebody's lungs, I'm all for it.

Every time my husband calls for an update on the permit required for our final inspection--before the system can be activated--we get another explanation for the delay. We're told the city is responsible for delays in issuing a permit, or that something else is holding it up. Meanwhile, more than 23 solar panels are sitting on our roof, completely inactive. Installing solar panels is only part of the job. Customers should not have to repeatedly call just to find out why their completed system still cannot be used. Ion Solar has been a massive disappointment, and I will make certain our neighbors, friends, and acquaintances know how awful the company is.

I came across Energy Solutions and was in contact with the owner texting back and forth about questions I had. They came out and did a site measurement and gave me an upfront and clear breakdown of what it would cost for the total project. Nothing was hidden. There were NO surprises at the end and was also able to have them install an interlock kit in case the power went out, and I needed to use my generator for the house. After two years of service, I've had no issues with the equipment, I also an email from their team checking in to make sure everything was good and if I had any questions, I could reach out to them at any time. I also recommended them to my neighbors as I had such a great experience. One of my neighbors went with a different company and he has had total regrets on why he chose that company for his solar.
